I have seen quite a few videos of yours where you identify wines that you think are overrated, sometimes a little underrated. I think it would be interesting to see a video dedicated purely to a few select wines you think are really underrated, or got a poor public opinion around them unfairly. Or rather, are there any wines that are publicly rated poorly but you consider highly?

In 1998 I bought Beaucastel for 30 German Marks a bottle, Chateau Talbot was at 50-60 Marks per bottle. Now I got Chateau Talbot for 55 € the bottle, harvest 2019, while Beaucastel is at 80-100 €. But yet I have sat here and watched several of your videos. You are a very interesting and likeable person. I'll watch and enjoy my redbull while you have your wine
Konstantin, I am only a minute into this video and once again I have to say, thank you for keeping it real man. I have said it before and I will say it again, you are the real deal when it comes to showing off what a real Wine Master can do. As for the magazine, I have been asking for the longest time exactly time how any company can accept advertisements yet review those products. If you bomb a wine will that wine company advertise that product with them? I do read the magazine with the thought in the back of my mind that there is a lot of bias going into it. There have been times when a winery has sent me a wine to review and I just bombed it and never heard from the winery again, they act as if I owe them something other then a shout out and a thank you (which they do get). While I think this is a bad way to do business, it does lend to the credability of other wine reviewers.
2001, I went to a winemakers dinner that cost me €275 for a ticket back then (in local currency). We had all red bottles of DRCs 1995 box (Conti, Tache, Riche, Vivant, Grands, Eche) and then a 5 course dinner with Clos Vougeot ad libitum there, but most just brought the generous DRC glasses to the dinner had drank the rest of them there. Near the end we had a surprise blind Vega Sicilia 1970 that was excellent and might be the best Spainish wine I ever had! All that for $300/€275 for that. Yeah. 2001 was a better time for wine.
I have to say as a WS subscriber that the recent shift of adding individual winery ads/partners/stories to the standard email distribution felt like a big sellout. That being said, they still feel less tainted than Wine Enthusiast let alone James Suckling, who apparently likes every wine he tastes.
Agree. I used to sub to Decanter, WA and WS and took the average of WA/WS scores as the real score, then read the notes from Decanter as I felt I had more English taste than American taste, for Bx wines. I ignore the US wines in the US mags as they were hyped too hard back then (I had several and always rated them lower) but the US mags were excellent sources to rate the Bx wines and pulled no punches, where Decanter felt like they just rated them after price, most of the time.
Your point about publications taking money is such a good one. But even worse is wine critics who work for supermarket chains awarding point scores for the supermarket wines. One in the U.K. just awarded 90 points to a very average £6 wine. It’s dishonest!
HdV have really stepped up their wines over the last few years with Guillaume Boudet taking the reins as head winemaker. The older HdVs were much more heavy handed with their oak use. Their Californios, the Syrah, was more in the style of Shiraz, whereas the 2018 Californios has the balance and poise of a Cote Rotie. It’s really delicious! Le Debut, the Chardonnay made from younger vines is a nice value. It’s gained heft as the vines have matured (currently 10+ years of age).
The restaurant that I run has Double Diamond 2019 on or Coravin by the glass list. We had the 2018 prior and I will say I believe that the 2019 vintage is a much better wine than the 2018. That being said I still don't understand the number 1 spot it received. I have brought it to numerous guests as a sample with a couple of other cabs and it is almost never picked as a favorite of theirs. While I normally wouldn't take much account in that sort of thing the guests that I have done this with are pretty experienced and knowledgeable Cabernet Sauvignon fans. All of that being said, if you are able to find a bottle of the 2019 Double Diamond at retail it is still a great price on a great wine. Thank you for the great videos!
Hey Constantine, how come you don't use something like a Coravin to taste some of these wines that definitely might not be ready to drink. Would it affect the taste?
I was thinking the same thing. I'm a huge fan of both Beaucastel and Tig. As a rule both need about 10 years to really shine. I regularly use a Coravin on wines I'm not familiar with and can't say enough about how well it works to get a sample but also preserve the integrity of the cork.
We just tasted the '20 Beaucastel tonight. One bottle recently opened, one that had been double decanted and opened for about 6 hours. Definitely worth finding and collecting
Can we please get more reviews for wines under $30? Here in the US at least most people who go to the store and look at the wine selection (which is often very large) we mostly see wines under $50, many more under $30. Most probably fall between $15 and $30, but I am not sure. The point is most people look for wines to buy in that price range, or they simply can only afford that. Here in San Francisco we have some higher end supermarkets like Andronicos (now owned by Safeway for those who are from CA) or Molly Stone, or even Trader Joes have a very big selection of wines. So I can only speak for San Francisco.
Niceeee, a lot of times in the US market these wines shoot up in price after a top ten cameo… I wonder if it will be the same with Talbot which always overdelivers in price. It is larger in production than something like the HdV, I’m interested to see how the market dynamics work…
My local wine store only has the 2018 at $68. I can’t find the 2019 anywhere local and don’t want to pay for shipping either. I’ll probably bite the bullet and get the 2018. The wine searcher average is identical and 2018 is a good vintage.
Nice. Ordered a 12 bottle crate of Talbot in 2021 and did not open the test bottle yet. 2019 was for me the first year i bought as subscriptions, and since i just started my cellar and since this is supposed to age, i bought a lot to make sure enough survive my thirst that long (ordered plenty in 2020, some unfortunately a bit later or even 2021 when prices already rose quite a bit - talbot was among the late buys, and brane cantenac too). Already did a 2019 bdx tasting with some colleagues and 10 different wines to taste, but didnt bother to commit infanticide on the more expensive ones. The tasting included Clos manou, Sociando-Mallet, Meyney, Lafon-Rochet, Haut-Bages Liberal, Gloria, Saing-Pierre (st.julien), Ferrière, de Fieuzal and Lassègue - funnily enough, while there were differences in the preferences in the middle part of the field, all 7 of us put Ferrière 1st and Lassègue last (However, I am also just not a right-bank guy). Regarding the other ones, many liked the Clos manou (which did extremely well considering that it was clearly the cheapest wine in the lineup) and the two wines from St. Julien (Saint-Pierre was the most expensive wine in the tasting, Gloria is also a good budget choice).
Konstantin, a very nice tasting video as always. I really appreciate that you score these wines and the Petrus last week. It helps to have a more clear view about what to expect frome these wines. I visited Beaucastel in 1997, just after finishing studies and started tasting wine. Great memories from the region, including Gigondas and Tavel. It's time to retaste Beaucastel. Luckily I can find it at € 80 here in the neighbourhood of Brussels. That's about the maximum I would spend on a bottle of wine. I prefer to taste 2 or 3 very good wines around € 25 - € 30. Exceptionally I'll try this Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Apparently the family Perrin is also making other wines: Côtes du Rhône Réserve, Cairanne Peyre Blanche, Vinsobres Les Cornuds, Vacqueyras Les Christins and Gigondas La Gille. I think I will try these to. The tasting of Château Talbot reminds me that I must try the 1994 Talbot that I inherited. By the way, never understood why they named the grape "Petit Verre d'Eau" as "small glass of water".
Helloe Phillipe, It is actually petit verdot meaning little green one which is due to its late ripening! Visiting the rhone region next year as an Erasmus student in Lyon very much looking forward to it. Also looking to live in brussels in the future perhaps
It hurts to see such great wines being opened so young. Challenge: buy those same wines again, put them in your cellar, and make the same video in 2029? Please? I'll be watching :) Thanks for the reviews and great videos !
Love your comment about value at the end of the video. While I was somewhat interested in the top 10, I know it's highly unlikely I'll ever taste any of them as they're all too expensive for me.
Super excited to see you review Beaucastel! I love many Perrin wines and have taken to putting a bottle of the Chateau Neuf du Pape away once every 6 months(it's very expensive in Canada) for special occasions. I also love the wine they make from literally just across the road from the CNdP vineyard that costs 40% as much, the Coudoulet de Beaucastel.
Beaucastel is so fucking nice, had occasion to try the 2015 vintage I sold at my workplace and was fantastic, the smoothest cdp I had tasted in my life… Sad story of the same night I sold at the same table a bottle of opus one 1980 but unfortunately both bottle I had were corked so the guest shifted on the beaucastel
I saw this Beaucastel on Christmas discount, like 80 Euro, still didn't go for it, went for a discounted La Nerthe instead (as a wine sample for my studies) for half that price. 120 USD is crazy!
As a budding wine enthusiast on a budget, I would be curious to know what you think the best bottles in the 30-60 dollar price range are. It’s become a bit of a game for me to try and find a decent bottle for the best price.
I was recently at a wine tasting hosted by MW Frank Roeder and Château de Beaucastel had a wonderful selection, including their 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. ❤
Just for the record about the Double Diamond CabSav: The Double Diamond CabSav 2018 was actually really rated 91 by Wine Spectator and did not make it into the Top 100 chart. So you were kind of spot on. You need to try the 2019 I guess to see that it might will really be 94 and more interesting and exciting than the 2018.
Hi!
Konstantin, my wife and I enjoy your channel and your sense of humor. I see that you taste wines from all over the world, however, I've not seen you speak to Canadian wines...yes even in Canada! I'm sure that you are aware of two notable wine regions being Kelowna BC and Niagara, ON, (I'm in Niagara)....would you consider doing a piece on these regions...Kelowna, is not too far from Washington State which you have done. Thanks,
Excellent review! You mentioned trying these wines over the next few days. How are you storing them to do this? Do you use just a cork, argon gas? Cheers!
That's very interesting. But I suggest to taste some Georgian wine product, because there are some mysterious and almost gone species of grapes... I tell u just one, name is ,,Usakhelouri"...
Excellent review Konstantin and you raise the obvious caveats. A magazine reviewing wine from sellers that advertise on it and ton of US wine. US and French wine - oh dear. Is this where we are in 2022/23? How on earth do we even select 'The Best'? It's an obsolete concept. Ridiculously expensive wine too without any concession to value as well. Very fair point scoring from you and appreciate your input about the Spectator choices but the 'Top' concept is so out of touch today.
Nice video! Interesting, too. I completely agree wtr to HdV, Tignanello and Talbot. I took the mentioning of Talbot and opened, when the list came out, a 1995, a single bottle I almost had forgotten about in my cellar. Man, what a surprise! A wonderful wine! So I completely agree, put the Talbot from the list/ in your tasting away for a decade or more and then have a lot of fun!
Konstantin, Greetings. I really love your channel, I am learning a great deal, so thank you. I have one suggestion. When you are rating or discussing a wine, would you please show it printed on the screen for a while, with all of the info, name, vineyard, rating and cost. It is very hard to see the labels when you hold them up to the screen. I have to keep pausing and rewinding to try to get the info. Sometimes you also forget to give the pricing, or exactly the same info as you have given on the other wines. A very friendly suggestion!!! Tomorrow I am going to a wine tasting of the 2020 Bordeaux releases, I’m very excited. Wish you were here in Chicago!!! All the best, I’m so happy that I found your channel on UA-cam!!! Please “STAY THIRSTY”, LOL!!! Rich
Great video as usual . It would be interesting to see a video about (red) wines from Galicia, Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra etc from modern Spanish producers like Raul Perez. Really exciting wines coming from there.
Yes, to Raúl Pérez! Also try a wine from Suertes del Marqués (D.O. Valle de la Orotava). The 7 Fuentes was possibly the most unique wine I've ever tried from Spain.
WS - I call it 'Spectorisation'. I much prefer Decanter for honesty, and frankly, anyone not paid for by corporate owned vineyards! Anyhow, an entertaining video Sir, and I appreciate your honest and frank opinions (as it should be.)
My experience with Ch. Beaucastel is that it tastes very different young than it does with 10-15 years of bottle age. Very few wines go through such an extreme transformation, IMO. I actually don’t care for it much when it is young-often too much prune and raisin in the fruit. But well-aged Beaucastel is always beautiful! I just tried the 2019 Tignanello, and it was wonderful IMO, significantly better than the 2004 vintage I had many years ago.
Nicely done! Fresh, structured, and just a bit edgy! Yes, QPR in WS is more for the elites than the hoi-polloi! And the conflict with advertisers is an issue unresolved like the tannin in a 2019 Talbot. Keeping it real and for the wine lover that can only occasionally reach for a $50 bottle of wine.
A very happy new year to you too. I do not know if I have missed out on your presentations but have you done anything in or about the Priorat wine region?
Hey, love your videos. I was wondering if you’d consider making a video about your preferred technical wine books, wine guides and novels linked to wine. Cheers from Australia.
Well you're on 98.1 k so I'm confident you'll get there! These wines certainly are a bit pricey for most domestic buyers, but it's interesting to see how they shape up.. The major supermarkets do have some very skilled buyers.. I for one picked up a bottle of Vina Maipo Chilean Merlot the other day on offer at Sainsbury's for under a fiver, which is as cheap as chips (quite LITERALLY 🤣) and I thought it represented outstanding value for money, fruity but with enough tannin to hold flavour. Most people probably would like to see you do more reviews of wine in the cheaper brackets, but I can only speak for myself.. A most enjoyable review all the same! 🌟👍🍷
More interesting and informative than the magazine. I've read their guidelines for their blind tastings, but wonder how certain champagnes always get the same or similar number. I'm willing to bet I could trick their tasters in a blind tasting. RP said he could remember every wine he ever tasted, but when asked to name 5 in a blind tasting......he got them all wrong! De gustibus non est disputandum.
Random suggestion to get over the hangover of the Double Diamond disappointment - Chateau Montelena Cabernet. Similar price, very different AVA (Calistoga), but to my palate it was the best thing I tasted from California last year. Thanks for your thoughts on these very popular "grail" wines.
Just out of curiosity, do you have a favorite wine magazine? I really don't like WS, like you said it is more about lifestyle than Wine (with tons of ads)
Nice to see your alignment with WS’s top selections for the year, since I like you both. I wish you had tasted the winning wine’s proper vintage, as even here in California there are variances from year to year. Thanks for your varied presentations and keep up the good work.
Hallo Konstantin, warum benutzt du nicht den Coravin um ein Glas zu probieren? Ich frage mich nämlich was du mit den ganzen offenen Weinen machst, grade wenn sie eigentlich noch was reifen sollten?
What do you think of Decanter, they use a three critic pannel to blind taste wines and come to a consensus of the score. As a result the scores a lower like wine spectator and they have less reviews overall but I feel like there reviews are just as accurate if not more. I do appreciate critics that blind taste test. Do you know of a good solo critics who blind taste? Keep up the great work I was subbed since you were around 5K or so
FWIW I believe if you look at Wine Enthusiast top 100 wines they are geared more towards value driven wines. Lots of affordable options. Spectator focuses more on premium wines that are widely distributed, which recently seems to be more and more American wines. WS do have some good value options, but never in their top 10, usually they are littered throughout the top 100. I know Suckling is not a popular guy in online wine communities, but having one of his editors based in Germany you do see a lot of good German and Austrian wines represented in his top 100.
I'd be interested to see the top rated 5 wines in their list that are sub $50/€50. I really enjoy your reviews but I'd like to see more wines that I can bring myself to drink with less than 10 years of cellaring.
As always, a great video and commentary. If you haven't done so already, it would be great to compare and contrast against it's Tuscan peers from a common vintage.
What is your opinion on Allen Meadows from Burghound? In my opinion he is the most reliable reviewer out there (but maybe his taste just fits mine). I find most wine reviewers have particular strengths. I would never even listen to Parker when it comes to Burgundy, but I find his Bordeaux and Rhône ratings pretty helpful. Btw is is crazy how Tollot-Beaut Corton Grand Cru got even a lot cheaper (when factoring in inflation), while DRC Richebourg‘s price exploded during the same time. Crazy that there is even a really good Grand Cru Côte d´Or red that got cheaper compared to the 80s!
Thanks for another great video! Is there a reason why you open all these bottles instead of using a cora vin? It definitively looks more fun to watch you pop those bottles open but then again, these were pretty nice wines so I was curious. Now i have to taste some of these wines, booo!
On the top 10 wines of 2014, there were 3 Portuguese wines there. Since there isn't a lot of content out there on premium Portuguese wine, if you get the chance to review one those, that would be amazing. (Quinta do Vale Meao for example) Great content as always, thanks!
Agreed! I was going to bring this up, so I’m glad someone else did! I am very interested in your cellar! Is it underground? How is the climate controlled? What is the story behind the sword and knife behind you? As an electrician, I’m even interested in the little lamp up on the shelf! Please give us a tour!
I'm always impressed with your videos! I noticed as you pour your wines, wonder if you know of the first in bottle aerator, KWÄF which is just now coming out in the US market. With your incredible wine testing expertise, I would like to have your evaluation of this new product! I have just tried it and I'm astonished!🍷

Love your comment about value at the end of the video. While I was somewhat interested in the top 10, I know it's highly unlikely I'll ever taste any of them as they're all too expensive for me.
Just bought 500 euro of red wine from your website Konstantin, thanks for the signed card....nice touch...great videos dude...top guy.
Beaucastel is so fucking nice, had occasion to try the 2015 vintage I sold at my workplace and was fantastic, the smoothest cdp I had tasted in my life…
Sad story of the same night I sold at the same table a bottle of opus one 1980 but unfortunately both bottle I had were corked so the guest shifted on the beaucastel
You made me want to invest in cases of the St Julien!
When he hits the camera with the cork! 👌
I had the 2019 Double Diamond and was later a bit surprised about WS selection. It is certainly very good, but is not up there yet.
I saw this Beaucastel on Christmas discount, like 80 Euro, still didn't go for it, went for a discounted La Nerthe instead (as a wine sample for my studies) for half that price. 120 USD is crazy!
Would love some Finger Lakes content! Maybe a Riesling showdown!
Hear, hear!
^^
As a budding wine enthusiast on a budget, I would be curious to know what you think the best bottles in the 30-60 dollar price range are. It’s become a bit of a game for me to try and find a decent bottle for the best price.
I was recently at a wine tasting hosted by MW Frank Roeder and Château de Beaucastel had a wonderful selection, including their 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. ❤
Excellent as always… and also noticing the incremental but continuous improvements in your editing!
Just for the record about the Double Diamond CabSav:
The Double Diamond CabSav 2018 was actually really rated 91 by Wine Spectator and did not make it into the Top 100 chart.
So you were kind of spot on.
You need to try the 2019 I guess to see that it might will really be 94 and more interesting and exciting than the 2018.
Hi!
Nice run-through but I would have gladly have waited a couple of days to learn how the wines developed over those next days …
Talbot for me, thank you
Excellent review Konstantin and you raise the obvious caveats.
Great video. May I recommend a foil cutter as they are very effective and inexpensive. Merry Christmas.
There is a reason why Tignanello is the standard red wine on board of Vistajet transporting the rich and picky folks.😅
WS mentioned choosing the Double Diamond partially for QPR.
Great video and commentary. Thank you!
What an insightful little review. I did notice the wine you sample in this video is, however, rather cheap! 💯
A very happy new year to you too. I do not know if I have missed out on your presentations but have you done anything in or about the Priorat wine region?
Thanks for this rating! Will definitively go taste the Talbot down the line ^_^
Great video as usual Konstantin, always interesting to get an independent testing of these great wines. Keep up the good work :)
Let's all get Konstantin 100k subs! He deserves that!
Thanks for sharing this amazing experience 🙏
Still have a Beaucastel 16er in the basement, wonderful wine. Additionally, I love the white Beaucastel btw, equally amazing.
Great content as usual
Random suggestion to get over the hangover of the Double Diamond disappointment - Chateau Montelena Cabernet. Similar price, very different AVA (Calistoga), but to my palate it was the best thing I tasted from California last year. Thanks for your thoughts on these very popular "grail" wines.
Just out of curiosity, do you have a favorite wine magazine? I really don't like WS, like you said it is more about lifestyle than Wine (with tons of ads)
thank you for sharing your knowledge , found your channel by chance
I just had the double dimond 2019 that won ($200) and the day before i had silver oak 2017 ($99). The silver oak was considerably better.
I appreciate your very thoughtful and descriptive reviews. I look forward to more content to come!
Nice to see your alignment with WS’s top selections for the year, since I like you both. I wish you had tasted the winning wine’s proper vintage, as even here in California there are variances from year to year. Thanks for your varied presentations and keep up the good work.
A "decadent tasting" for sure. I'm jealous. Enjoy and thanks for sharing! 🍷
Hallo Konstantin, warum benutzt du nicht den Coravin um ein Glas zu probieren? Ich frage mich nämlich was du mit den ganzen offenen Weinen machst, grade wenn sie eigentlich noch was reifen sollten?
How are you preserving these to taste over a few days? Pivot?
Fantastic job as always, but giving Wine Spectator the business in the introduction was just awesome 😂
Keep up the great work I was subbed since you were around 5K or so
You continue to provide excellent content. I look forward to your next one.
Always wanted to know about the painting on the back
FWIW I believe if you look at Wine Enthusiast top 100 wines they are geared more towards value driven wines.
If I may suggest you should systematically give the price of each wine. Great channel, keep up the good work.
I love what ur teaching me.
I have an 05 château Talbot in my cellar guess it’s time to try it
Thank you very much for the video. How have the wines devoloped in the next degustations?
I'd be interested to see the top rated 5 wines in their list that are sub $50/€50. I really enjoy your reviews but I'd like to see more wines that I can bring myself to drink with less than 10 years of cellaring.
Loving the new series, Konstantin. Keep up em coming! Swallowing them faster than my expensive wines :D
This gets my mind off of this off course World. I may sign on to do a weekly wine tasting.
like Utube show
As always, a great video and commentary. If you haven't done so already, it would be great to compare and contrast against it's Tuscan peers from a common vintage.
Nice episode as always
Just got me some Talbot, now i have to wait for it to age 😭
On the top 10 wines of 2014, there were 3 Portuguese wines there. Since there isn't a lot of content out there on premium Portuguese wine, if you get the chance to review one those, that would be amazing. (Quinta do Vale Meao for example)
Great content as always, thanks!
we need a cellar tour video asap!!!
Agreed! I was going to bring this up, so I’m glad someone else did! I am very interested in your cellar! Is it underground? How is the climate controlled? What is the story behind the sword and knife behind you? As an electrician, I’m even interested in the little lamp up on the shelf! Please give us a tour!
Servus Konstantin, am besten is immer noch dein Keller😀👋
Konstantin, have you tried any Argentinian wines? And, if so, what do you think of them?
Seeing a Tignanello on the thumbnail I knew it was about to be a very good video 👍
Just a week a ago drink 2019, it make you feel that still young need to wait less 2 year to realize the expactation.
