  • In this weeks video I delve into the newly released Studio One 5 as we take a look at the Project Page for Mastering using the updated Stock Plugins!
    I've been a big fan of Studio One for some time now and Presonus have not disappointed with some of the Stock Plugin enhancements.
    In this video I cover a simple way to get your song sounding louder with a simple and efficient Limiter, whilst also taking a look at the Stock EQ, Multiband Dynamics plugin, TriComp and the Fat Channel XT.
    I also cover some of the principles of using a Loudness Meter and how I approach loudness for Streaming Platforms.
    For anyone who is not sure about Loudness in Mastering then check out my Mastering Loudness Simplified playlist:
    • Mastering Loudness Sim...
    The Intro Music featured as always is:
    www.bensound.com/
    And the song I used to Master was:
    All the Same by North to Alaska
    open.spotify.com/track/228j5r...
    This song is available to download to practice your skills via the Cambridge Music Technology website run by Mike Senior:
    www.cambridge-mt.com/ms/mtk/
    This is a great resource that I can't recommend highly enough.
    Other music featured in this video is:
    Sahara Cowboy by Arc De Soleil via Epidemic Sound
    This video is an unscripted look at how I use Studio One and I hope you find this useful.
    Please be sure to subscribe and hit the bell to keep up to date on all future updates.
    I am still in the process of building the new website www.masteringitb.com/ so if you want to reach out to me via social media then you can find me via the following:

    Very good video. It's a great starting point for a newbie like me :) I def will give a shot for these tips. Probably, this is a good video to see by anyone who is starting with home recording at a hobby level before digging into all the fancy and expensive plugins. This is a good start to understand where are the spots which you could replace with some fancy 3rd party plugins. Thanks heaps! :)

    Great video, mate, just found your channel today! I haven't mastered anything yet but I'm playing around in Studio One and learning from channels like yours, Joe Gilder's and a few others. I'm also practicing with tracks from the Cambridge site. It's invaluable!
    Studio One is really great but I've found that the maximiser/limiter in Ozone 9 sounds a little better, to my ears, than the one in Studio One. It beats every limiter I've tried, including FabFilter, Sonnox and Waves but I'm still wet around the ears with mixing and mastering.
    Keep the videos coming!

    Awesome video, really taught me a lot! Quick question, why do you set your limiter threshold to -3dB specifically if you want your song to peak at -1.5dB? Doesn't that make the limiter start "limiting" at -3dB below the ceiling (at -4.5dB)?

    • @jambassguitar
      @jambassguitar 3 роки тому +2

      @@ProgressiveSoundAudio makes perfect sense, so long as my ceiling is at the desired 'barrier', the threshold can just be adjusted to catch the unnecessary peaks and bring the volume up. Thank you so much!

    No mention of that area in the upper left corner of the GUI? What do I need to know about metadata? How do I fill in the data fields. What affect does it have on the final product and the playout platforms?

      Hi and thanks for your message, this is covered in this video here:
      ua-cam.com/video/JqTlmM_BNPY/v-deo.html
      In a Nutshell if you’re doing a digital release then ignore the Metadata! This is picked up at the upload stage with the Distributors.
      In terms of affect on the final product, it’s purely digital information stored onto certain formats only, MP3/DDP etc, Metadata is not written onto WAV files.

    How r u doing? Okay I have a question. I've been trying to master my song the proper way for like a week in a half and for some reason I can't seem to get my song louder than it is. When I'm in the car it sound really low at 14 mayb 15, and still sound like a medium volume at 27. But when I'm on my computer listening to it in my mixing headphones it sounds perfectly fine. Is there anyway u can explain to me what I'm doing wrong? I am a r&b and hip hop producer/artist. Thank U I will be so grateful if u're able to help me out.

    • @artikissolo2927
      @artikissolo2927 3 роки тому

      @@ProgressiveSoundAudio I exported from the DAW. It seems to play fine when I exported it from there, and play on the music player on my computer, it doesn't sound like anything's wrong. But the issue is, is when I play it in the car that's when it seems like it's not loud enough or something and no matter what I do I can't seem to get it to become louder. And I want to learn it so I won't have to go to a professional to do it. Currently in a financial situation so I don't have the money for it. But if u're able to help with advice or instructions on how to do it I'm willing to pay attention. Thank u so very much for replying to me.

    I record heavy metal guitars and drums. Generally no other instruments. But when I come to the mastering stage my INT LUFS IS -8dB. So it’s coming in way to hot even before I can do any mastering.
    What am I doing wrong? I do add plugins on my tracks. Mainly gate, Tube screamer, amp sim, reverb, eq, compressor. Sometimes saturation.
    Do I need to gain reduce somewhere? I’m not sure where and how many times I need to do this?
    And do I pop the level meter on the master bus and check that way at each stage?
    Thanks

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio  Рік тому

      There’s quite a bit to check but before I say any more what’s your peak level on the Master channel when you have finished mixing?

    • @filterscape
      @filterscape Рік тому +1

      @@ProgressiveSoundAudio do you mean the TP indicator on the studio one level meter ? I have that plug-in on the master bus.
      I checked it on two songs. One came in at 3.64. The other at 7.48.
      Also I have a limiter (loudmax) with only a ceiling set at -1.0 dB to stop clipping. Otherwise it will clip on the master.

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio  Рік тому

      @@filterscape okay that's the issue then. The True Peak figure ideally needs to be less than -1dB, I would recommend around the -3dB mark. Anything over and above -1 will add compression with a Limiter ceiling at -1. By using a Limiter to control the Peak level you are effectively doing half the Mastering job before Mastering so that's why your LUFS readings are so high. You will need to start looking at gain staging and there are many ways to do this. In theory you could just drop the Master fader down to reach -3dB before Mastering but ideally you'd want the total sum of your Mix to be in the -3dB ballpark without having to touch the Master Fader.

    • @filterscape
      @filterscape Рік тому +1

      @@ProgressiveSoundAudio thank you. okay looks like I’ve got some work to do. Trial and error work because I don’t know how to gain stage. If I can’t figure it out I will just lower the master fader to -3dB like you said.

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio  Рік тому

      @@filterscape You basically just want to make sure your individual channels aren't clipping and then turn the faders down on the individual tracks, balanced to how you want them, with not too much level hitting the master.

    I think I disagree with your explanation on the multiband at 15:30 ... it IS a Dynamic tool. You seem to say you simply turned down the frequency with compressing it. But you DID. You would use EQ to attenuate, no? By using the MB Comp you did in fact, compress that high end. Also - a good MB Comp would do the job of your previous 15 minutes of steps - along with whatever flavour of the day you want to add.

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio  2 роки тому +1

      I’ve just rewatched the video and there isn’t any compression being added. This is shown on the multi band compressor as there’s no gain reduction shown on the plugin, so that part is correct.
      But…. In hindsight you’re absolutely right, a simple attenuation would be much better suited using an EQ with a high shelf reduction. That being said what I was trying to achieve was a de-essing style compression but clearly didn’t execute this well in this example.
      In terms of the overall video this is a stock plugin based tutorial so it showcases different use cases, some of which cannot be achieved by one multiband compressor, certainly not with the intended uses of the plugins used.
      But thank you for your feedback, any and all feedback is greatly appreciated as it really helps me to develop and improve my presentation, and in this case I could certainly have done better 👍

    What is DC Offset?

    • @ProgressiveSoundAudio
      @ProgressiveSoundAudio  Рік тому

      It’s a voltage offset of the alternating current. In simple terms rather than voltage running symmetrically above and below 0v an offset occurs which affects the symmetrical pattern of the waveform creating an ‘offset’!
      It’s mainly caused by some form of fault along the way but it can be a complex topic and not one I could do justice in a few sentences.
