How to start space marines: Buy a ton of terminators because they’re the coolest and try to make them into a workable army with your various SM killteams
All the small mistakes (no shame) Jay makes make it 100× more endearing Like I'm actually talking to someone at a gamestore, and they're just telling me what they know
I feel the same! Instead of feeling like some expert is giving me a presentation/mastercalss, it's just ya boi spitting ideas and theory crafting with ya while you both look at the store shelf and decided what to buy. I love it!
A word of warning to those who are thinking of taking Jay's advice on the blood angels combat patrol, get it while you can. Once the BA refresh hits, they'll redo it like the dark angels one.
I started warhammer three days ago, what does this mean? Also, I called the ultramarines blueberries to a GW manager, and he wanted to kill me in the store...why?
@trashpanda_actual first off, it just means they'll be changing what's in the box, it's a regular thing they do now. The second one, I guess the manager was an Ultramarines player lol
I just started the hobby about a month ago and plan to grab the BA combat patrol, do you think it would be better to wait for the refresh or get it now?
@@HarryANuis-gi9hz The BA combat patrol isn't very BA themed, but it is a decent start point for SM in general. Based off how the DA update went the new combat patrol will probably be worse in every way(less interesting models, still no chapter flavour, no vehicle, less points), so if you like the models in the current BA one you might as well get it while you can.
Thanks for this. As a long time space marine painter who now has the itch to play, this is was exactly what I needed to see. I’ve had no idea who’s actually good and who just looks cool for years now. Nice to hear it from someone with experience who has crunched the numbers
With Gladius youre implying that they get to be in the selected doctrine all game. Its only for one turn and you can select all 3 on 3 different turns, just not use the same one on two different turns
One thing I’d like to add on top of Jays advice is - don’t feel like you’re locked into buying a combat patrol. A lot of the time, the Warhammer/GW employee will push you towards the combat patrol box because it’s either a quick $100 or it’s the ‘done thing’ that they’re told to do by the higher ups. But that’s not what you should always do. Say for example, you don’t like/want 50% of the mini’s in the combat patrol box… don’t just buy the box for the ones you want and then have 10-20 models left over. You absolutely can just build your army 1 unit/ character at a time. Yes it may cost you more money in the long run - but this is an expensive hobby! I play orks, I haven’t bought the combat patrol and I also haven’t broken my bank account because I split the purchases up over a couple years. It is possible to buy an army without a combat patrol. Yes, combat patrols are a good money saving option and can give you a great deal on units and can actually set you up for a very good army composition. But don’t feel like it’s your only option. 😁 Happy hobbying!
was just checking to see if enyone mentioned it, as a deathwing afficinado (284 terminators and counting across my 30k and 40k armies) going from 5+ to 4+ invul and from T¤ to T5 was huge, and with the latest change to deathwing knghts` weapons they are both super tanky and great vs any target. (the 30K/40K split is 47/237 )
👍👍 I'm not in the habit of buying large amounts but over the last couple of years I've aimed for two boxes each of Aggressors, Eradicators, Inceptors and Centurions to be the core of my Salamanders army
Same here, I love gravis! My next purchase will be to get some centurions because space marine inside a space marine... hell yeah! Love the look of them after some modification to get them less stalky looking. (also hello brother of the flame)
The thing of note of the Gladiator is that you can trivially build it in a way that all three variants are accessible to you and you can convert between them in an easy manner, and you don't even need magnets to do so. Also, another reason not to buy the Combat Patrol Space Marines is because those exact same models are in the 10th Edition starter kits, which are cheaper and you get some Tyranid models you can either keep or sell in addition to what is in the Combat Patrol.
In the BA combat patrol you actually get the full kit for Incursors/infiltrators so u can build 5 of either and then if u can source some more phobos bodies (from i dunno oh maybe the reiver bodies sold for super cheap by people parting out the reiver box to just sell heads) you can make another 5 dudes. So if u build 5 infiltrators you can after sourcing the bodies also build 5 Incursors
Got alot of great info out of this vid! I got back into 40K last year with the leviathan box and have been randomly collecting marines since, not really knowing what units to take or put into a list. Now I feel like I have a direction to build towards, and it's also kinda funny that I was literally planning on buying the BA combat patrol soon XD
So do you just paint them as whatever chapter you want to use since they're all space marines? Like could i make the leviathan space marines into Dark Angels?
I recently got into the hobby and I used the ultimate starter box (basically Leviathan) and made the space Marines into Salamanders with some help from the local shop owner.
Hey. Neat video. The intercessors picture is of the heavy intercessors. Still a good unit but may confuse people trying to look them up. Also, the librarian in the blood angel's set if a regular, primaris librarian. He can't go with terminators but he is great with things like hell blasters or a big squad of intercessors to keep them alive!
Hmmm could convert those Voidsmen into serfs for your chapter. That's a fun idea. Also neat to know I have most of these models. Their kitbashed with loadouts that would make a rules lawyer cry out in agony or burst into laughter or both, but I do have them, so that's neat to know. Anyway thanks for sharing Jay.
I would like to mention that Blood Angels Currently are a very Melee focused Chapter with Sons of Sanguinius Detachment, Each time an ADEPTUS ASTARTES unit from your army is selected to fight, if that unit made a Charge move this turn, until the end of the phase, add 2 to the Strength characteristic and add 1 to the Attacks characteristic of melee weapons equipped by models in that unit. A squad of 10Jump Pack Intercessors with most BA Epic Heroes attached as well as a Sanguinary Priest with Jump Pack, suddenly becomes around 50 hits that are hard easy to hit and hard to save
Incursors don't give rerolls to hit for the rest of the turn if they hit. They give +1 to hit for the rest of the shooting phase. Still useful when they incur 😂, just in a different way.
I was literally just looking at blood angel unit's and the combat patrol box set as I started watching this video, not sure if I want to paint a unit just for nostalgia as they're something I painted in my teens
I have roughly 1k points of space marines, but a lot of it isn't really viable. Bought a firstborn dreadnought and land speeder because they were both cheap and looked adorable, and a predator tank because I figured I could run it as a rhino until I reread the rules and realized "tacticus armor" means Primaris marines, and they don't fit in a rhino. For all my effort trying to save money I think I agree now that that Blood Angel combat patrol would have been a better route. Though I still love my little boxnaught and land speeder.
Terminators have a 4+ invulnerable save. My local meta seems to favour the spearhead vanguard detachment, even when not using Phobos things. Being able to infiltrate a terminator assault squad with shields is very powerful.
suggestion for actually collecting space marines: buy the Horus Heresy Age of Darkness box set. 40 marine bodies, 10 terminators, land raider, plus a couple of characters. and with just a small purchase of the missile launcher and heavy bolter upgrade box, you can milk even more value out of those 40 marines through building desolation squads and sternguard veteran squads. or if you just want some alternative units, the special weapon upgrades can give you both infernus and hellblaster squads.
I know nothing much as ive just started but want the black templars for the look, already painted some space marines but i want some more templar stuff.
Ya know, I'd actually really like to see a video like this on all the 40k factions. Might be tough for the armies you don't personally know as well, but maybe you could bring some guests on the channel for those? They could give YOU the breakdown the same way you gave to us in this video, and you could even pair it with you and the guest doing some mini-painting of, say, a Kill Team or whatnot of said faction. Could make for a fun series!
That’s not how Gladius works. You can pick each doctrine once during the game or use the “adaptive strategy” strategy to put a unit in whatever doctrine you like
I purchased the starter set with space marines vs tyranids. Can I make the space marines space wolves or do they have to be ultramarines. I already have 3 armies (I main space wolves) but now that I've got to grips with the game more I do find myself wanting to do an imperial fist descendant chapter based around anvil siege detachment with gravis armour EVERYWHERE. just sit on obj tanking stuff, blasting with heavy weapons and power fisting anything in the face that comes to close
Hang on, how can you troll with the teleport homer exactly? If you put it in one place and your opponent swarms it? Isn't that the only option to send the terminators? How exactly can they enter way across the other side of the board? Is the distance from the homer that big?
I have all 4 assassins and I rotate them around. Haven't used Eversor (yet) but I have seen him used as an insanely good anti infantry missile. Will he get taken out next turn? Probably. Have I seen him delete an entire unit of infantry? Yeah
Loved this. I recently began my Imperial Fists army and so far I’ve got Redemption Dreadnaught Eradicators Eliminators Terminators Captain w/ master crafted bolter I want to do Agressors, intercessors either heavy or the standard, and possibly inceptors. Does anyone have any other recommendations?
So I’m starting a black Templar army and I’m wondering should I buy the space marine codex and the black Templar index or should I just buy the codex or should I just buy the index?
@jay saying dont get space marine combat patrol, after i bought it and assembled it (new to the game) but going salamanders and wanted the infernus squad... am i boned?
I'm new here and I'm having some problems understanding a couple of things. I'm looking to buy the Black Templars Combat Patrol. I understand that since they have two key faction words "Adeptus Astartes, Black Templars" I can't mix them with units that have for example "Adeptus Astartes, Space Wolves" but I can mix them with units that only have "Adeptus Astartes"?
As someone who already thinks aggressors and inceptors are already pretty cool looking, having half to two-thirds of my army made up of them doesn't seem like a huge deal. A few aggressors, a few inceptors, a dreadnought, and then some intercessors to fill out the points making up an army? A-okay by me.
Yeah I'm just doing great nights for right now and after I finish my thousand points then I'm either going to work on sisters of battle or loyalist iron warriors and my current plan for them is raptors and legionnaires and maybe a hellbrute but my main plan currently is one Terminator squad 3 raptor squads three legionnaire squads and two bikers squads which will put me at 905 points giving me enough for either a chaos rhino or another raptor or legionnaire squad or even another bike squad which would be 41 miniatures and with either the extra raptor or legionnaire squad that'll be 46 and with an extra bike squad that would be 44 and with the rhino or the hell brute that would be 42 and yes I know I have to play them as chaos and that's okay so I don't have to paint all that gaudy trim
For starting space marines i recommend the photon mono 2 it’s not the biggest plate size so printing space marines is slow but at the price of a combat patrol its worth it since most of the files are free
Hey Eon, im sorry to ask you of this but im trying to get into the hobby very slowly (mainly the price lol) I want to ask if you could do a similar style video for an Adeptus Mechanicus army? Its the one im trying to build and paint and honestly a lot of the info surrounding what is a good starting point is so cluttered or unhelpful (from what i've been able to find) Thank you very much

25mm bases are too small for Space Marines now. You'd need a converter to 32mm but until my Etsy ones arrive from Spain, cardboard discs work for me.
Depends on the unit.. some like bikes / landspeeders are retired but most still work

The bladeguard ancient is 45 points ;)
Does the blood Angels combat patrol models have blood angles styling? Can the models in the box be used for any space marine chapter army?
What a awesome video! Thank you!
Can I have guardsman and space marines in the same army ?
Is there currently no model for the eversor assassin right now? I can’t find it on GW’s website
Great advice!
Thank you soooo much this helps so much.
Correct, your army can only come from one chapter. Google for pdfs of the rulebooks for now, may as well have more money for models
Currently starting my Black Templar army! No idea how to play yet-
Can you do one for Death Guard? I have a world eater army but wanna switch to death guard 🥺
Uh, I could be wrong, but I think a few of his statements about abilities or stats are a little off compared to the rules I have access to.
I got the nurgel VS Marines.
Terminators and Dreadnoughts (ironclad) are my favorite units.
hey Eon can you play with all sorts of space marines? Like playing with the blood angels and the ultramarines, like is that allowed in WH40K?
Basically no.
You can paint your guys as a mix of chapters.. but you have to use the rules for one at a time.
Will you be making any QUAR content ?
For starting space marines i recommend the photon mono 2 it’s not the biggest plate size so printing space marines is slow but at the price of a combat patrol its worth it since most of the files are free
And do you have tips for new players
So what are your auto include BT?
Hey Eon, im sorry to ask you of this but im trying to get into the hobby very slowly (mainly the price lol)
I want to ask if you could do a similar style video for an Adeptus Mechanicus army? Its the one im trying to build and paint and honestly a lot of the info surrounding what is a good starting point is so cluttered or unhelpful (from what i've been able to find)
Thank you very much
