I’m not entirely sure why I watched this because I’m on my 4th army, but this video would be fantastic for a beginner and I’ll definitely point new players in this direction.
4 armies, that’s impressive! What do you have out of interest? Thanks for watching, getting positive comments from experienced players means a lot and gives me some assurance I’m going in the right direction!
@@TinBearStudios I started with Tau, then tried my hand at Craftworld Eldar, both of which are about 500~ points. I finally settled on Blood Angels as my main army and got them to almost 2000 but I got burnt out so I started working on an Emperor’s Children army to refresh.
@Yacob44 that's funny because my 1st three armies were the exact same. I think I have 8 now... Tau, Aeldari, Blood Angels, Iron Hands, Astra Militarum, Imperial Knights, Adeptus Custodes and Tyranids lol... probably 2000 points minimum per army
@@TinBearStudios no ones ever asked you this question but who if i like every army and i just wanna collect and paint the BIGGER characters from whatever army they might be from and not play with them in competition but just out them in my glass cabinet and admire them, does anyone actually do that? just buy big characters from whichever army that just look cool and thats it?
I have been watching Warhammer 40K for beginners vids non-stop because I really want to get into it but I felt intimidated and overwhelmed because I had no idea where to start. Your video helped so much, not just where to start but also where to continue from there. Thank you for this!!!
This is such a nice comment to read, I pulled this video together as I felt like I needed something like this when getting into the hobby along the lines of "Buy this, paint them like this and this is how you expand" which I would have been grateful for. I know not everybody is like me getting into the hobby and has a clear focus on what they want to start with and paint, however I was so lost and just wanted someone to tell me what to do!
As much as I might lament the ubiquitous stranglehold of the Space Marines, it's important to acknowledge that the models themselves are designed to be beginner friendly to paint. Not as easy as Necrons (they really are easy mode), but Marines have big volumes which let you get a hang on your brush skills. And remember kids, thin your paints and apply TWO THIN COATS!
Thank you, i dont know if im going to blow the money yet. But im absolutely hooked on 40k lore and need an excuse to make new friends, the painting was what worried me. I originally wanted a krieg imp army, but i found out quick thats not a very good idea
@@davidponder1654 if painting is not something you Relish and you'd prefer an easier project, then Krieg are certainly not a great place to start. It has to be said that Astartes aren't the absolute easiest either (it depends on how much detail you want to pick out). Necrons are cheat mode, you can paint and a tire army in an afternoon without too much trouble. Tyrranids can also be as easy as you want to make them. But if you are fixed on collecting an Imperial army then Marines are probably the easiest way to start (the smaller a human gets the more difficult they are to paint). Personally I go for Genestealer Cults and Ad Mech, so apparently I enjoy torturing myself.
@@davidponder1654 I've been thinking a bit more about where you're probably coming from. For me, Warhammer is 60% about the lore (storytelling) 35% about the painting/hobby and 5% the game. So I can associate with loving the lore above all else. You may be pleasantly surprised by the painting experience. All of the best storytelling is Guard/Inquisition. Abnett writes primarily in those world because, of course, the inhumanity of the universe is merely a setting for very human stories. I would urge you not to destroy your enthusiasm for the storytelling, lore and aesthetic of the Guard simply because their miniatures are fiddly. Frankly, all miniatures can be painted very simply. Have a look at monochrome paints schemes. You may be very nicely surprised by what an undercoat and some dry rushing does. I can imagine some very nice looking Krieg with a sepia, monochrome dry rush scheme, maybe just picking out the lenses on their masks or something like that. And the tanks are a big project but far less fiddly. If the Krieg get your juices flowing then don't get scared away from them.
@@stuffandnonsense8528 i meant more the price and accessibility, official krieg are expensive, and i dont know a 3d printer. But seriously, thanks for the info.
I’m not a beginner. I collected huge amounts when I was a kid with a Space Marine army and an unfinished Tyrannid army. As an adult, getting back into the lore has excited me. However, the practicals of making this hobby work in a cost of living crisis are eye-watering. What I’ve found is that scoping factions on UA-cam and consuming lore first is very handy. I’ve picked the faction and got a codex (The Drukhari). Once I’ve read the codex then I’ll pick a small squad box for £25 and buy brushes, paint and glue. If it works, it works, if it doesn’t it doesn’t but will make it a cost effective task. Rolling back the years is so important sometimes. Thanks for video.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Yeah that's a really nice approach and I follow a similar method when planning a new army too, it's really great fun consuming the lore/codex and planning it that way - I've realised as I get deeper into the hobby it's not about having a single, meta list but having a range of models so when the meta changes you can adapt.
I just started warhammer, I just painted my second mini and I would like to give a small tip, for the Space Marines at least, you don't (always) have to choose Ultramarines for beign the easier chapter or any chapter because they are easy, more so if you want to create an army, instead, you have to be really REALLY sure of the chapter you want, I wanted to create a custom pattern with my first mini, testing stuff, in the end, I think i'll make Salamanders changing some colors on the armor, but salamanders in essence, just be sure of what you want before purchasing the paints because if you go to a store and tell them exactly the chapter you want, they can give you the best colors for it, I didn't and now I have to use what paints I have, I can still work with them, but I should have sat and thought about it for longer
I shared the same info with new players wanting to play but they always go down the rabbit hole, and end up intimidated and quit before they even started. I will be sharing this video with many others. Thank you for sharing.
I started with Dark Angels...but it was a stagnated start as I found that I was constantly then looking at other armies...fortunately I've managed to avoid temptation. I've got around a thousand points or so, and next step is to add some big guns into my army. I would recommend reading some of the lore as this gives a new element to your army.
Much stronger willpower compared to myself! Great to hear and Dark Angels are really fun, one of my close friends plays them as his main army and he always smashes me pretty hard 🤣 I've yet to win against him (he's also a better player though) and I'm looking forward to the day when I do! Thanks for commenting, really appreciate it.
man, this was a great video. I have been trying to get into Warhammer for about four months now and literally just found out there's a board game aspect along with the video games and books. this was great for saving money and understanding the process of picking a faction.
My buddy from work introduced me to Warhammer a couple weeks back and I’m hooked. This video has helped me out a lot because I have been very confused as to which army to start with. Instinctively, from binging lore and talking with him, I narrowed it down to either necrons, orks or space marines, specifically space wolves. Thank you so much for making this video! I initially thought about going with a starter kit and building off of that and after watching this, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
These comments from you and others in your position are making me so happy - it's the reason I started this channel and made this video. I'm so indecisive I just didn't know what to buy and as I had a bit of disposable income I sort of went all in on loads of Combat Patrols but it just wasn't the smart start. Don't get me wrong, I love Combat Patrols so much and I'm so excited to build them! But it's not helpful when learning trying to get started - I almost needed someone to sit me down and say "Play Space Marines, paint them this way and you'll have a great time." You'll have a lot of fun with Space Wolves, I'm actually so on the fence right now about buying their Combat Patrol (see what I mean!!) as the models are so flavourful and look amazing. Thanks for watching and hope to see you in the next ones 😊
something for beginners I'd recommend is finding out if your local area has non-GW hobby store/game shop as you can almost always find Warhammer kits for 20 percent off, not only will you sae a lot of money long term but also find a great place to play games

Thank you! I am a really experienced role-player and gamer, but I somehow never got my feet wet in the 40K hobby. I inherited some free minis from a family member, and am now looking into starting as a full-fledged beginner. Your video is really helping me decide what to do first.
Thank you so much for sharing this. As somebody who wants to get into the hobby but doesn’t know where to start, this is a big help. Particularly because I want to play blood angel Marines or Necrons, so this box seems like a great starter option. Thank you
I appreciate you watching and commenting, I made this for people just like you - you’re exactly where I was a few months ago! I hope you do jump in, it’s a really great hobby and both Blood Angels and Necrons are a lot of fun!
Enjoyed the video, I played a really long time ago and still have some models leftover but looking to get back in. One thing I wanted to mention is the Codex for $55. Would love to see another video with higher budget and includes everything; storage for minis(+transport), rule books, dice, etc...
this is the video i was looking for! Thanks mate, ive started and stopped getting into the hobby countless times over the years with an assortment of codexs, models and endless other bits while still having never played a full game
Heya mate, thank you for this video. I last played 40k during 4th Edition... but was interested in picking it up again. Definitely will check out this Recruit Edition, which looks perfect. Great advice that I intend to put to use!
I’m trying to get hobbies into my life due to stress, I started things like swimming etc, and looking to get into warhammer I was always fascinated by it but thought it was too complicated, this video really helped show that anyone can start with basic items! Thank you
I want to get into this hobby, just so I can plan cray things out with other people with other armies. Maybe if enough people have Tyranids, and people have space Marines...man it'd be fun to organize on different tables in the same room to emulate the battles in the books. Hell I'm pretty sure this is how GamesWorkshop writes the structure and plot points of their stories.
There’s a way of playing called “Narrative” which you’d probably like a lot, you build your armies and then fight battles on a map you set out So basically one of your games could be “Tyranids have taken this city and the power infrastructure is taken out for the planet, we need to take it back by whatever means.” It’s basically D&D in the 40K universe. Regardless, you should definitely check the hobby out - it’s given me so much joy over the past few months, as well as new friends I love meeting up with regularly.
Oh man, after watching like 20 videos on this topic that all say start with the army you like, this was so nice as someone who is also indecisive. I haven't found anything as helpful in 40k vs AoS where there's tons of videos on "This is what this army is like, here's how you want to buy things to build up your units"
I actually followed these steps and just stumbled onto this video! Glad to see that I took the easygoing steps forward :) A mate of mine got excited and bought a Adepta Sororitas Combat Patrol Box, but does not have paint, tools, dice and all those things :/ I am afraid he might be overwhelmed by the price or worse, flames me for not keeping up with my €55 purchase 🤣
I love the fact that you put this episode out! I really been thinking about putting one together myself That's a bit more recent for newer players as I have more friends getting into the game. Great job on the editing and honestly you made a lot of good points that I would totally agree with! Great work!
Really appreciate this comment, means a lot! Yeah I wanted to cover things from a beginners point of view, I’ve actually bought 7 of the Combat Patrol boxes now so definitely have overspent 😂
@@TinBearStudios Hey, look at it as a way to introduce friends to the hobby! That's what I'm doing. I have 2 "major" armies and a good chunk of Combat Patrol armies and Kill Teams in the hopes I will peak one of my buddy's interested to get them into the hobby even though I typically primarily play with my top two factions.
Thanks man, was a really helpful and informative video, I was going to get the recruit edition like you said but when I went to my local GW I was really swayed to get an ork box and I’ve stuck with orks somehow 😂 I did manage to get the painting starter set though
Thank you for this. I didn't realize the space marines were all the same model so I was really worried about buying the starter kit and pigeon holing myself into playing ultra marines lol.
Hey curious 40k player here. I’m looking into the hobby. I haven’t started yet but I’m super thankful I came across this video. I know Warhammer is super expensive as you progress. So finding this before buying anything at all is super helpful. Because of this I might actually get to start playing Thank you so much for the information. 😁
Howdy, i am too new to the warhammer tabletop, and i am recently starting an army of the imperial guard. Even tho i am new i have some tips to make the hobby cheaper already. What army has your attention?
@@srdodojedi3749 So its a toss up between Blood Angels and Night Lords. I want to start by getting into Kill team to get slowly invested in the hobby. Then after I buy more books and expand my army but those are the ones I'm looking at. Everyone I've talked to has also told me to wait because Kill team is getting updated soon and Night Lords have my attention for the gothic aesthetic which are also getting a kill team pack before to long. So its really tough for me rn. However I will say any advice you would like to share I'm willing to hear.
Loving your videos. I’ve just started to get into the hobby. Halfway through the core rule book and I’ve started to put together the marines in the starter set. Still undecided on what army I want to collect. Plan is to get some painting under by belt first.
Really appreciate that, I'm not far ahead of you (only started in Feb) so your comment means a lot as I'm making these for people just like you. Great idea with the painting, I'm under the same name on Instagram if you want to send me pics via DM once you've done - would love to see them! Welcome to the hobby, looking forward to seeing you around 😊
Def do not start with astra militarum or Imperial guard when I first started. They are not that good as a starter army. I still love them though. Good tip on the starter set though. I wish I had this video for friends when they first started.
Thanks, appreciate you saying that about my video! Yeah I'm the same with AM or Imperial Guard, I love both and am excited to pick them up - but I don't think super beginner friendly.
I would make sure to brake up the big surfaces of the bronze with dark red or black iron. Make it look like a cast iron army with bronze trim. And red chapter markings.
Just getting started myself with a group of friends and I too decided to go with Minotaurs! I definitely see your point about starting with an established chapter though. I've already grabbed a few extra models than what comes in the Recruit edition box and will soon start painting. Very excited!
Welcome to the hobby Cris! I love the mysterious lore behind the Minotaurs as well as their flexibility to choose a successor Chapter, for me though I do wish I'd just gone Ultramarines 🤣 I'm happy with the colour scheme though and enjoy seeing them on the table, I think if I was starting again I'd have just done something established! What factions are your friends playing?
@@TinBearStudios I loved the lore bits but what really sold me on them was the forge world model for Asterion Moloc. I love the Greek hoplite look! As far as the group so far we have Necrons, Sisters of Battle, Custodes, Drukhari and one person on the fence but thinking of playing Tau. Its a pretty good size group
Definitely sounds like an awesome group! I also have the forge world model for Minotaurs (both of them!) and have yet to build them, but both seem awesome.
Not good advice for a new player. Pick the army who looks the coolest, has the coolest lore, and know what type of army is it (elite, hoard, etc) Don’t just start with Ultramarines cause there the best for beginners, chose the army you want and LEARN IT. You can do ultramarines if you want btw.
Great vid! I've been wanting to get into this hobby for a while now but was constantly put off because it seemed so daunting to get into. I think I will start here for sure but maybe do the opposite and practice on space marines and play with necrons cause I think they are really cool!
I remember when I was first starting out with 8th edition, I wasted so much money on little bits of armies that I simply shouldn't have bought. I am glad I am happy with my orks now. But I wish I had something like this when I was doing research into getting started.
I love your Orks too and can't wait to play them again! They're such a fun army to play against and I can only imagine playing them is ridiculously fun too. But yes my full boxes of models sat here giving me the eye, asking me why they're not built yet definitely isn't helpful - I should have just gone a bit more "All in" on one army to start! Thanks for watching and the support as always 😎
Welp, Techinally my brothers kickstarted me into 40k with the 10th edition starting set. I kept tyranids, so I guess I´ll try to spend the next 100$ as best as I can to grow my first army
I’d love to take credit but I bought them second hand from a super talented painter - I bought them to inspire my own schemes too as they look so awesome.
Thank you. :) Im about to start. But i decided on either Eldar or Chaos Marines deticated to Slaanesh. Not sure with which one i end up. We will see after the 10th edition drops
The advice i which i knew when i started: You are picking an army to start, not to commit to. As a beginner you are at the single point where you are most likely to find something you find more interesting. Use your starting army as a foundation for discovery
I haven't played full 40k in 20 years. I got sucked back in, willingly, because of Kill Team. With that being said, I have 5 kill teams that seem to be slowly expanding into 2000 point 40k armies LOL For The Emperor
I think Kill Team into large 40k seems to be a common way into the hobby for a lot of people, I've done it backwards in that I'm like "Huh, I've got all these armies - I can play Kill Team for free!" and then got into it that way. KT has been an awesome thing to get into, I'm loving it.
Hey, i personally disagree with a lot of points in this video. What you are missing in my opinion is that a lot of people are really looking to just play a specific army and might not have the budget for another one for the next few years. Telling those players to basically just buy space marines, and preferably even ultramarines might be harmfull in the long run. I do see that this approach might be really usefull for someone who has enough funds and time for their hobby but it might be a pretty harmfull way to approach the hobby in my opinion.
Fair enough and thanks for watching/commenting with your thoughts, super helpful. I do see where you're coming from but also for me as someone who didn't have a huge disposable income either and feeling lost on "Just buy what looks cool" which was advice I kept getting I do think Space Marines as well as Ultramarines in general is a very safe bet for people starting out. They don't need to go straight from 0 to 2000 points and will quite quickly get a grasp of what they do and don't like, for example if they find they love melee they can pivot to that within Ultramarines and have the flexibility. However if they initially went with say Tau and find they really want to experience melee or psychic then you're kind of out of luck. So I guess agree to disagree but I really do value you coming and writing a thoughtful comment, it's always helpful for people to have a range of different opinions.
@@TinBearStudios Glad there is a civil discussion to be had and i definetly see the point you are making but i peronally would recommend using tabletop simulator for try-before-you-buy situations. It is a one time 20-30€ and can be used for loads of ther stuff.
@@TinBearStudios wtf u mean little disposable income $700 dollars is the average yearly income in my country and your acting like “only” being able to have spent that much was annoying
A good way to start 40k In my opinion is to start with kill team I know its a different game system But No intimidation by having a large amount of models And its a good way to start and expand your army For example with tau Buy a box of pathfinder And done you can play Want to expand on that get a box of stealth suits After that fire warriors Now you almost have enough to play 40k only missing a hq and something bigger like a hammerhead or a broadside Plus You get to socialize earlier with your local gaming community And get hints and tips on how to Get into 40k more efficient
I’ve heard a lot of people recommend Lill Team to start too! I haven’t done much research and haven’t played it yet but I’m definitely interested. Thanks for watching and commenting, super helpful.
I got into warhammer already obsessed and wanting to know more about the mechanicus. I thought the space marines are cool too so I’m just going for a combined force of mechanicus and space marines (iron hands)
You definitely have enough in the set to get going, but there are definitely tools which make life easier - it always feels like there are new things to buy! But they definitely aren't essential. I actually have a video on the ones I've found most useful as a beginner: ua-cam.com/video/9gttXU5UGwE/v-deo.html
The main factors that stop people from getting into this hobby is the introduction price point or initial investment. I mean it's minis and paint and at a minimum, it's $100-$150 USD. Sorry but that might sound cheap to most, but to some forking out that much "just to see if you like the hobby" is not worth it. The minis, the world, the lore are all cool, but I don't particularly like war games, but I want the models to practice painting and build Dioramas and that sort of thing. What would you suggest I start then?
I don’t really want to play tabletop I just want to paint a squad of Iron Snakes for my game room display. It’s hard to find just a box of ten generic space marines
Thanks Camry, really pleased to hear you say that! I know it’s only my opinion of how to start and I’m still new to Warhammer, but I hope it at least helps some people who were where I was before building my first army 😎
If you’re enjoying Space Marines I absolutely loved the Dark Angels combat patrol. You don’t need to build them as Dark Angels, which you may already know, but the models in there suited me perfectly - I’ve used them all since.
Thank you. I needed this. Before I only got into it just for painting so I can display them. Now, I kinda want to start playing. I really need to save money and just not buy everything. 😅
I have such a bad habit of overspending! The playing side is so much fun and I hope you take the leap and start, it's been one of the best things in the past 12 months for me.
I'm priced out of real 40k. I've started with proxy models, which are every bit as cool and actually attainable, but i'm not really sure I can actually play with them so I guess i'll just paint and enjoy them.
In profesional tournaments and some hobby stores you dont but with friends or specific people you could play. I really like proxies, etsy sells them in a really good price, one just needs to search.
Not particularly, in casual games you'll be hard pressed to find someone who cares - and if they do then they probably aren't worth playing with! But technically yes, the way you paint them represents the Chapter they're from - which means you can use that Chapter's special/characters units. I am running a custom Chapter with the Minotaurs and it's great, but if I was starting out again and on a budget I'd go Ultramarines as they're a well balanced Chapter and I could pick up SO many things on eBay already painted which can be helpful once you're filling out your army.
at my local warhammer store the guy has these free models he will teach u how to make to see if yopu like it then he will let you paint it teach u paint methods and then give you a quick rundown on how to play. cool dude the ajax canada warhammer store is the place to go
This was very helpful. I'm guessing there is a similar pack for age of sigmar. I like collecting them more but it be nice to get into the game and make some friends.
So you'll be hard pressed to find any players who actually care - last night I played against a guy who had his whole army painted as Ultramarines but wanted to play Iron Hands and so that's what he plays. If someone does have issues, they probably aren't worth playing with! I'm not sure how that stands in tournament play and if they care as I'm too new to the hobby to know that, but I think technically yes if you're playing as Ultramarines then it should be Ultramarines...but I'd just do you and not worry about that, it's the reason I went Minotaurs so I had the flexibility. If I was starting again I'd actually do Ultramarines rather than Minotaurs tbh though, as Ultramarines are a pretty good all rounder chapter.
Definitely do it! If you haven't already check out my other video on how to play your first game, you can see me using both of them: ua-cam.com/video/TpmsGnwuCeg/v-deo.html Shameless plug on my own video, I think you'll like it though!
Ebay is the place to get your first army. Its so much cheaper then getting it all from a store. 2500 points of SpaceWolves for $250 half of it painted.
Yeah that's a really nice approach - I bought enough units for a competitive Tau list, but of course by the time I'd even built the 2k points what was competitive had changed! So it's much better to have a selection to adapt to the playstyle you'd like 😊
Haven't really dipped my toe into the 2nd hand market yet, it does seem like a good approach for some - I really like the idea of building and painting all my models though and the idea of stripping everything is a bit daunting when I'm still new. It's probably not as bad as I have in my head though!
Never played or seen a game but I’ve been curious can you paint them however you’d like? I do also want to get into it WarHammer where would I go to buy armies and the painting supplies?
The bronze is cool but i would use it as trim. This includes guns. If you want silver might want to add edge highlights with metalic silver instead of using two separate metals o the models a white metal can serve as a highlight over yellow metal. Also add a dark wash to tarnish the bronze a bit and add shadows in receses. It will make them details pop more. Think of environmental effects such as dirt on the legs and smoke setting in streaks from the ventilation slits. Could add a cool bronze cast stove effect with industrial look and heat coming from inside. Just a few ideas. Also minigun for the dread would be more visually appealing. It has more visual components to it. Maybe magnetize the arm.
But,if i only wanna paint the miniatures and just having my black templars on my shelf without playing the wargame,is ok? I mean,im still a brother or im a heretic?
meanwhile I have a pile of shame in my room worth about $4000 including an imperial knight, The Lion, 3 combat patrols, and a nurgle contemptor dreadnaught from forge world
It's such a nice way to start! My friend had the command edition and I really like the terrain, it's the main thing I'm lacking and it's a little pricey - but I want some...
Cant agree with the video as i simply would get bored building and painting the starter armies like space marines and necrons. I would quit instantly. So best is i think to really choose the army you like and start building those by either buying a normal soldier set of that army + paint and tools kit or a combat patrol/spearhead box with paint+tools. Your recommemdation is just ok for someone who really starts from zero and will have the 2 armies to get painting experience and throw the models away before taking the army he really likes but after all, why not get the painting experience instantly on the army you love.
I was thinking of 3d printing some space marines.. do you think people would let me play? And do you think I should still paint them to look like ultra marines?
Hey not sure if you already decided what to do but i think 3d printed models are fine for your first test games with your friends. And you don't have to paint your models in specific colors to use specific rules. But it's always cool to fight against a lore accurate army imo.
What is that book with the chapters you were using near the start of the video? I'm really interested in picking a chapter and it seemed like a good start.
Thank you so much for the advise i really wanted to start on my own army i was planning on getting the death korps of krieg first but now i think i will definitely start with the starter set and i wanted to ask you is the Leviathan set worth it because im considering to buy it.
So i was gifted the exact same starter kit as recommended im the video, by a friend!! Six marines and almost a dozen necrons. Plus, a Redempter Dreadnought. Are they still relevant gameplay-wise? Ik this is old, and that the meta constantly changes so thats why I'm asking! I'm going to paint them the next week and i was actually thinking to turn them into ultramarines. Is this still a good option? And LASTLY, what troops should i purchase next? What would YOU purchase next if you where in my shoes?! So many options to pick from! Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance everybody; best regards!!
For simplicity choosing space marines is the easiest as you can start as one chapter and then just switch rules to another whenever you want despite the paint job. Minotaurs that can fight like dark angels or iron warriors or even yes your basic ultra marine rules nobodies gunna complain long as you say what your playing at the start of a game and stick to it for the whole game
Still pretty relevant except the edition of warhammer is different so instead of space marines and necrons set you should get the space marines and tyranids set
I want to start an army of space marines that have cool shoulder pieces like the black Templars. I wanted to buy the recruit box with the black Templar upgrade kit. Only then I found out that the recruit box is push fit and you can not upgrade the marines. This is my first army and I want something cool but don’t want to be the plane Jane with ultramarines. What do you recommend to pursue this? I was looking at the black Templar and maybe turning those into white Templars or maybe the dark angles
I’m not entirely sure why I watched this because I’m on my 4th army, but this video would be fantastic for a beginner and I’ll definitely point new players in this direction.

Same bro but I just sent it. Worst case I just have a few miniatures to paint best case I join a new group of people to have fun with
Welcome to the community!
Well 1 year later did you start?
Great to hear and Dark Angels are really fun, one of my close friends plays them as his main army and he always smashes me pretty hard 🤣
I've yet to win against him (he's also a better player though) and I'm looking forward to the day when I do!
But it's not helpful when learning trying to get started - I almost needed someone to sit me down and say "Play Space Marines, paint them this way and you'll have a great time."
You'll have a lot of fun with Space Wolves, I'm actually so on the fence right now about buying their Combat Patrol (see what I mean!!) as the models are so flavourful and look amazing.
Thanks for watching and hope to see you in the next ones 😊
I really enjoyed the Elite edition starter set as a beginner too- that Capt. and those Necron Destroyers are cool af. Very fun to paint.
I really enjoyed the Elite edition too! I just wish I’d bought that or the Recruit edition first over 4 Combat Patrols 😂
something for beginners I'd recommend is finding out if your local area has non-GW hobby store/game shop as you can almost always find Warhammer kits for 20 percent off, not only will you sae a lot of money long term but also find a great place to play games
Thanks for watching and I hope you take the leap, it's been such an amazing first year in the hobby for me and I absolutely love it.
There’s a way of playing called “Narrative” which you’d probably like a lot, you build your armies and then fight battles on a map you set out
So basically one of your games could be “Tyranids have taken this city and the power infrastructure is taken out for the planet, we need to take it back by whatever means.”
It’s basically D&D in the 40K universe.
Glad to see that I took the easygoing steps forward :)
A mate of mine got excited and bought a Adepta Sororitas Combat Patrol Box, but does not have paint, tools, dice and all those things :/
I am afraid he might be overwhelmed by the price or worse, flames me for not keeping up with my €55 purchase 🤣
no intention to get an armie but if i ever do this will defo help me chose and start up!
Appreciate you watching and commenting Mark!
My head was already spinning watching beginner videos and this one helped me a lot. Thanks
That’s a really nice way of looking at it! Pleased you’re trying to get so many buddies into it, definitely makes it a lot of fun.
Thanks man, was a really helpful and informative video, I was going to get the recruit edition like you said but when I went to my local GW I was really swayed to get an ork box and I’ve stuck with orks somehow 😂 I did manage to get the painting starter set though
Glad I could help! Orks are a really great army to start with so you'll have fun there.
I'm eager to join the hobby as I really need to get away from constantly being on screens.
This video was the final push for me - thank you!
I love that I can get started for less than $100. Thank you so much for this guide!
anyone else notice how his dreadnought is just solid balthasar gold?
As someone starting to start this really helped me thank you
Keep it up Andy videos are getting better and better! PTYA Gang lets go!
Thanks so much for watching, appreciate that!
Getting ready to start. Thanks for the video
Thank you for this. I didn't realize the space marines were all the same model so I was really worried about buying the starter kit and pigeon holing myself into playing ultra marines lol.
Great advice, bro-brah!!
Im a new player and i whant to go on blood angels and this realy helped me out ❤
Loving your videos.
I've been looking at starting Warhammer and this is a very good video! Thank you!
I love the mysterious lore behind the Minotaurs as well as their flexibility to choose a successor Chapter, for me though I do wish I'd just gone Ultramarines 🤣
I'm happy with the colour scheme though and enjoy seeing them on the table, I think if I was starting again I'd have just done something established!
How do u find Minotaurs like are there box sets for them or ?
I’m new to this sorry if it’s a weird or dumb question
Not good advice for a new player. Pick the army who looks the coolest, has the coolest lore, and know what type of army is it (elite, hoard, etc) Don’t just start with Ultramarines cause there the best for beginners, chose the army you want and LEARN IT. You can do ultramarines if you want btw.
Thanks. This was super helpful and exactly what I was looking for.
Pleased it helped James!
Great vid! I've been wanting to get into this hobby for a while now but was constantly put off because it seemed so daunting to get into. I think I will start here for sure but maybe do the opposite and practice on space marines and play with necrons cause I think they are really cool!
That's a really good way to do it! Necrons are a lot of fun and I enjoy them a lot.
very good video. I would also like to start soon. I personally like the Death Korps of Krieg. I plan to start with them.
Hey mate great video you inspired me to start a army (tau)
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Tau’s a great way to go 😎
I remember when I was first starting out with 8th edition, I wasted so much money on little bits of armies that I simply shouldn't have bought.
@@TinBearStudios if you are playing orks seriously you are playing them wrong! aha lets get the next game sorted! :D
Haha, love that attitude!
Welp, Techinally my brothers kickstarted me into 40k with the 10th edition starting set. I kept tyranids, so I guess I´ll try to spend the next 100$ as best as I can to grow my first army
I love the eradicators and plate they’re stood on! Love the pink? Assuming cherry blossom?
I’d love to take credit but I bought them second hand from a super talented painter - I bought them to inspire my own schemes too as they look so awesome.
It looks like cherry blossom so I think you’re right.
Thank you so much. I love your breakdown.
Thank you. :) Im about to start. But i decided on either Eldar or Chaos Marines deticated to Slaanesh. Not sure with which one i end up. We will see after the 10th edition drops
Both great choices! Welcome to the hobby and this is an amazing time to be getting involved 😊
@@TinBearStudios thank you. I really really cant decide which one. Is it too much hustle if i want to play both?
The advice i which i knew when i started: You are picking an army to start, not to commit to. As a beginner you are at the single point where you are most likely to find something you find more interesting. Use your starting army as a foundation for discovery
I chose the nighthaunts, they specialize in dying
I would also say you could sell/trade off the other faction to offset some of the cost
I want to start and really like the space wollves. I like the close combat. Is that a decent start army?
Thank you for this ONE!
3:08 do you need to chose one permanently? I would like to just be free when painting
Of course not
Great advice!!
Thanks! Maybe we’ll see you with your own army…
Im not buying anything from gw, scumbag company.
@@TinBearStudios wtf u mean little disposable income $700 dollars is the average yearly income in my country and your acting like “only” being able to have spent that much was annoying
Christ bless you, thanks I'm thing of getting into 40k so this helps a lot
No problem! It's an amazing time to get into the game, they should be releasing new starter boxes soon with 10th edition coming too.
A good way to start 40k
In my opinion is to start with kill team
I know its a different game system
But
No intimidation by having a large amount of models
And its a good way to start and expand your army
For example with tau
Buy a box of pathfinder
And done you can play
Want to expand on that get a box of stealth suits
After that fire warriors
Now you almost have enough to play 40k only missing a hq and something bigger like a hammerhead or a broadside
Plus You get to socialize earlier with your local gaming community
And get hints and tips on how to
Get into 40k more efficient
I’ve heard a lot of people recommend Lill Team to start too!
I haven’t done much research and haven’t played it yet but I’m definitely interested.
Thanks for watching and commenting, super helpful.
I got into warhammer already obsessed and wanting to know more about the mechanicus. I thought the space marines are cool too so I’m just going for a combined force of mechanicus and space marines (iron hands)
Does the paints and tool set come with enough tools or should i buy more?
You definitely have enough in the set to get going, but there are definitely tools which make life easier - it always feels like there are new things to buy! But they definitely aren't essential.
I actually have a video on the ones I've found most useful as a beginner:
ua-cam.com/video/9gttXU5UGwE/v-deo.html
Amazing video!
Thanks Camry, really pleased to hear you say that!
I know it’s only my opinion of how to start and I’m still new to Warhammer, but I hope it at least helps some people who were where I was before building my first army 😎
@@TinBearStudios I got my first miniature a few weeks ago and then got a box of assault intercessors right after, so I’m pretty new too
If you’re enjoying Space Marines I absolutely loved the Dark Angels combat patrol.
You don’t need to build them as Dark Angels, which you may already know, but the models in there suited me perfectly - I’ve used them all since.
All I know is that I have 1 ultramarine with a cape. And he's my favorite because he looks cool.
Does it actually matter what way you paint the space marines? I painted them purple because I thought it looked cool.
@@TinBearStudios thanks brother
Any time 🙂
at my local warhammer store the guy has these free models he will teach u how to make to see if yopu like it then he will let you paint it teach u paint methods and then give you a quick rundown on how to play. cool dude the ajax canada warhammer store is the place to go
Sounds awesome and like a cool store! I had a similar experience with my first Warhammer store, enjoyed painting the mini a lot.
This was very helpful.
I'm guessing there is a similar pack for age of sigmar.
I like collecting them more but it be nice to get into the game and make some friends.
Yeah there seems to be for AoS, I’m definitely going to be checking AoS out so will be interesting to go through a similar experience when I do 🙂
@@TinBearStudios yes thank you. :).
Though I did see a set I'm interested in. So I might save up for them too.
So does that mean i must paint the army according to the lore's chapters colours? like ultramarine, blue, and red, and bronze(i think)?
@@TinBearStudios I see. Thanks. Was thinking of getting the recruit set that has both Astartes and necrons which I both liked in a small team.
Definitely do it! If you haven't already check out my other video on how to play your first game, you can see me using both of them:
ua-cam.com/video/TpmsGnwuCeg/v-deo.html
Shameless plug on my own video, I think you'll like it though!
I wish they sold more single Miniatures so you could at least test out if you want to get into the hobby or not
Ebay is the place to get your first army. Its so much cheaper then getting it all from a store. 2500 points of SpaceWolves for $250 half of it painted.
I want one of every Tau unit from a collection standpoint, then I'll buy duplicates to fill out competitive list.
Yeah that's a really nice approach - I bought enough units for a competitive Tau list, but of course by the time I'd even built the 2k points what was competitive had changed!
So it's much better to have a selection to adapt to the playstyle you'd like 😊
OMG this is describing my situation rite now 😅😭
Second hand.
THAT's the way to get into the HHHobby.
1 HQ, and 2 Troops. THAT is how you get your foot in the door.
I really, REALLY dislike assembling and painting my minis. Are there minis that are pre painted and pre assembled that aren't used?
Nicely done. Now I want an army.
You should give it a try, it’s a lot of fun!
Are black templars a good starting chapter?
But,if i only wanna paint the miniatures and just having my black templars on my shelf without playing the wargame,is ok?
I mean,im still a brother or im a heretic?
meanwhile I have a pile of shame in my room worth about $4000 including an imperial knight, The Lion, 3 combat patrols, and a nurgle contemptor dreadnaught from forge world
What a coincidence i literally did exactly that up to every single unit except i have the command edition and an Ironclad instead of redemptor 😂👍

Dark angels i think
By space marines i swore you meant orks
For simplicity choosing space marines is the easiest as you can start as one chapter and then just switch rules to another whenever you want despite the paint job. Minotaurs that can fight like dark angels or iron warriors or even yes your basic ultra marine rules nobodies gunna complain long as you say what your playing at the start of a game and stick to it for the whole game
What is that manual he’s using to reference the color of each chapter?
Good thing my first set was a ultramarine starter set
is this still relevant or is there an updated video?
Still pretty relevant except the edition of warhammer is different so instead of space marines and necrons set you should get the space marines and tyranids set
Great video. Nice and easy.... step by first step. ive been considering getting into this Hobbie.
What chapter is your gold and red space marine you showed?
I want to start an army of space marines that have cool shoulder pieces like the black Templars. I wanted to buy the recruit box with the black Templar upgrade kit. Only then I found out that the recruit box is push fit and you can not upgrade the marines. This is my first army and I want something cool but don’t want to be the plane Jane with ultramarines. What do you recommend to pursue this? I was looking at the black Templar and maybe turning those into white Templars or maybe the dark angles
What did he buy, tyranids, deathguard, dark angels and?
????????????
