@@markharrison2544 -I wouldn't say that. Kris was solid, & for a singer..he's pretty good. Dylan would have ruined it,he's too self conscious, and out of his element. Knockin' On Heaven's Door, should have been prominently displayed in the movie, and at least used for the ending credits, but was relegated to a meaningless snippet.

I remember seeing a butchered version in the theater in 1973; thank God for DVD so I can see a restored cut close to what Peckinpah intended. He and MGM head James Aubrey fought tooth and nail during and after the production and in the end the audience was the loser. Sadly this was Peckinpah's last western.

OK I'm having a Mandela effect moment lol. I remember watching this movie as a teen in the early 1990's Thanks to Young guns it got me onto the Billy the kid story. But I could have sworn that there was a fast paced Rock song in the movie with a chorus that said Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid I even sing the chorus sometimes because it seemed so catchy. But now almost 30 years later I see the soundtrack and watch the movie and no such song exist lol was my mind playing tricks on me I could have sworn this song existed in this movie. well I guess another Mandela effect lol.

The 122 minute preview/Turner version unfortunately doesn't have the same opening title sequence, with the song I think you mean, but the 115 minute 2005 Special Edition has it in the same place as the 106 minute theatrical version.

The 106 minute theatrical version was still better than most westerns, before we saw the 122 minute preview version/Turner version, that was released on Z Channel in 1988. The 115 minute 2005 Special Edition includes the wife scene - which was only featured in the TV version before, the flash-forward to Garrett's death in 1909 ( really '08), and a few snippets that are missing from the preview version, but otherwise uses the inferior cuts of the theatrical version. I want to see 145 minute preview version that Martin Scorsese saw before MGM/UA executive James Aubrey deprived audiences of Sam Peckinpah's brilliance.

Billy didn't kill 21 men for starters. At best he killed maybe 6 or 7 and it can't be proven that he was the one that fired the shot in at least 4 of those. That is just a start of the inaccuracy but it is a damn good movie.
