Bless you!!! This is one of my favorite songs ever. My Dad was a die-hard country only fan. When he was dying from cancer several years ago I played this song for him. He got up & started swaying to the music and told me to play it again. A very special moment. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
This is one of the most beautiful songs and it helped (and still helps) alot people through tough times. I've read that it prevented alot people from killing themselves and all that, for that alone this is a diamond of a song☝️ Also the video, how they are all alone in their cars and in the end they all go out and come together, they are not alone anymore
Michael Stipe has a very unique voice for sure. As soon as you hear it you know it’s him. Any era of REM, loud or quiet, upbeat or slow, it’s always his voice that carries the song beautifully.
MRM, that haunting voice got to you too. I was feeling extra sad today because of a death in the family, and that just felt like I felt. Your face is your greatest story teller, and bless your little heart, that spot on your head must be awfully tuff
You did that reaction like a boss. Which is to say, you just watched and saved your comments for the end. And then you offered some great comments. Future reactors to this song: This is how you do it.
This is one of the few songs that makes my entire body and soul cry. So sad, so beautiful, so hopeful..You do not listen to this song without tissues nearby or a friend or family member to hug
This song has saved my life so many times over the years. Thanks for sharing I sincerely hope it gives somebody else what they need to hold on to life just one more day til it doesn’t hurt so much. ✌️❤️🎶
Singer Michael Stipe wrote this song as a deturant to suicide, and it apparently worked, because after this song was released, the suicide rate in America dropped, at least a little bit. Michael Stipe is a great person.
What can I say I've loved this song for decades and nobody can inspire hope quite like Michael Stipe. The power of the message of this song kicks in and the power of its message hits home when he sings for the first time on camera that her than it being him just walking about?
I FELT IT. I have heard this song so many, many times, but I never seen the video. The moment he said, "Hold on", I had chills go down my spine and looked over at you and you were scratching your head. I FELT THAT FEELING. Cool.
Late reaction. That bit gets me too. The big intake of breath and the releasing of tension in his shoulders. Letting go of all the burdens that hold us down. It's like a big sigh of relief:' It's ok. Everybody hurts. You are not alone'.
So pleased you just let it play. One of, if not The, most powerfully emotional songs ever written. Well done Michael Stipe, for your words and your vocals.
Hey Ty, I missed this video! I'm so glad you reacted to this song. Absolute truth, my cousin went through a point in his life where he gave up. He's one of the most gentle men I've ever known in my life but he'd hit his breaking point. My aunt said he heard this song and the words kept him from committing suicide. We're grateful and blessed that he heard this song and didn't give up. He's a blessing to have with us. It definitely holds a special place in our hearts.
This song always reminds me that there are people who hurt worse than me. It taught me that the best way to deal with my own pain is to help someone else through theirs.
The key to combating depression is helping others. MRM comes close when he says stop thinking about yourself. But like I say helping others is the key. A happy life is a life of service.
Hey the program I use is filmora. You can diwload a free version that let's you do basic recording, editing, etc. That way you can play around with it first
When we are hurting and in a deep dark place, it’s the best time to reach out and do something for another person. A hug, a smile, visit a care home and talk to the elderly or simply read the newspaper to someone with failing eyesight.
All I have to hear is the first few notes of this song and I get chills. I appreciate the advice of seeking counsel from above. And while friends, family, religion, 12 step programs, professional therapy etc. can all provide added comfort and support, nothing can replace going straight to the source.
This is sad but message of hope also . You can hear how the music changes at the end to uplift ....hold on. .hold on ...love this song. I listen to it whenever I despair.
I lost a family member who I was very close to due to suicide. It's hard to explain but it is a death that's harder to get past. I still think of him all the time and wished he would have reached out or had made some different decisions. Dang you Gary I miss you.
Im binge watching your old videos. This song was huge when my Aunt passed away from brain cancer. In 93. She was only 46 and i was 20. I helped took care of her. And this song hit home to me. Ive always been the caregiver in my family ( and so was my mom) ive watched many family members lose their battle to cancer but im strong in my Faith to keep doing it. Taking care of your family is most rewarding gift ever in our lives. Hope your wife and mother had a great Mothers Day
This song is so deep! For me, I went through a time of addiction....and when getting clean, those first 5 days of hell going through withdrawals....this song said it ALL! THE DAY IS LONG....AND THE NIGHT IS YOURS ALONE! I had never had such long days and the darkest, loneliest, longest nights of no sleep and constant spasms...throwing up....it WAS HELL! And this song got me through a couple of those nights. Just to know someone could sing words that spoke the truth of what you were going through made me feel less alone. No matter how many friends say they will stay with you through it....they sleep and you don’t...and it’s LONELY AND DARK! But then this songs says...But HOLD ON! HOLD ON! And gave me some hope to press on through. My request for you is to listen to and watch another video that to me explains addiction perfectly as well and that is “Its only life” by The Shins. “ we all spend a little while going down the rabbit hole” “Open up the parachute...something’s got to stop the free fall!” SO GOOD! What would we do without music that is so many times there for us when nothing and no one else can be?!
"As a man thinketh, so is he." We have the ability to curse or create by the power of our tongue. Man, you make me smile, you make me laugh and I dig your commentary. You speak to me and I appreciate your input on so many of the things that are special in my life. Thankyou so much & I love your sense of humour & honesty. You have a lot of Aussie support. Peace to you.
And I gotta apologize to you because I didn't listen to all your comments when I posted mine. This is a great example of how just hearing the song alone is great but with adding such a powerful video with additional captions...just about got choked up. As I was watching the people leave their vehicles it reminds me of how we need to avoid isolation and share our problems with others because yes sometime..everybody hurts.. sometime to the point that they want to end their life. But it doesn't have to be that way. I won't preach either but I was so impressed with you sharing how Jesus will share our burden if we just ask Him to...Hope it's obvious that I just loved your commentary. And of course not everyone wants to ask our God of Christianity for help but just start asking ONE person if you can share your hurt with them.
This is a song not of sadness, but of salvation. Your not alone. Your not the only one. Someone is going through everything right now and your not alone.
Taken from "Automatic for the People" - my favorite R.E.M. album. One of the best songs about grief I've ever heard. After knowing about grief firsthand when my best friend passed away, this song has been a blanket that swaddles and comforts me in my moments of sadness I have now and then when I am reminded of my friend. I am one of those people that wants to hear sad songs when I am sad, and this song in particular reminds me I am not alone in my sadness and grief. So, yes I agree with you, Ty. Don't fight the grief - let it flow through you. Crying is not a weakness, compassion is not a weakness, love is not a weakness. And,, I want to quickly add, every time you feel a sadness from the memory of a lost loved one, it is a reminder of your love for them, and a reminder of them living on through you.
This song was used in the movie, When A Man Loves a Woman, with Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan. It's probably in other movies, as well, but love this Georgia band.
@@OffRoad-jh1do Hey man.. thank you! I hope the same for you. My mom has had sum health scares lately so been a bit caught up. I appreciate that very very much! Looking forward to responding to your question earlier about me, guitar, you, guitar.. I have suggestions for u. Will be in touch soon. 💖
Like in the movie: G.I. Jane: I never seen a wild thing feel sorry for itself. A bird will fall frozen dead from bough without ever having felt sorry for itself. This is a quote from D.H Lawrence.
YES!! I love the saying "YOU WERE GIVEN THIS LIFE, BECAUSE YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO LIVE IT!" I agree with everything you said except not everyone can talk their way out of depression & anxiety. I remember being full of anxiety at 8 yrs old. From then on I suffered from anxiety & depression & it was bad!! At 23, it consumed me. I was dx'd with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, & postpartum depression. They tried me on so many different meds & either nothing helped or I couldn't tolerate the side effects. I was in a tailspin, couldn't pull myself out of it, & was losing faith that my doctors could find anything to help me! I had a very busy, but great life! My husband and I had just built our house, we had 3 beautiful kids, I was in nursing school, & I had a lot of supportive friends & family......but I just couldn't dig myself out of the hole that I was in! People meant well by giving me pep talks & suggestions on how to "get over" what I was going through, but the worse I got, the more of a failure that I felt because I couldn't make myself better! Finally, my doc suggested just one more try at a new prescription. I reluctantly agreed. Within 10 days I started feeling like a new person, a happier, less anxious person! I cannot put into words how happy I was! The doctors had told me that if a med worked for me that I probably wouldn't feel any better for 6 weeks & that's what I had expected, but thankfully that's not what I got! I'm 44 now & I've been on Zoloft for 21 years & will never voluntarily go off of it! I haven't suffered any serious bouts of depression since & my anxiety is much better! My family on my maternal side is full of anxiety and depression & I unfortunately, passed it on to all 3 of my kids. When my oldest daughter was 15 she attempted suicide. It was the worst night of my life! I'm telling you this because I think, no I know that it's very important how we support people suffering from mental illness! The people who loved me most in this world meant well with what they were saying to me, but they didn't fully understand my reality & it just made me feel even worse about myself! People can't talk themselves out of a chemical imbalance. Please don't take this harshly. You have a sweet & kind heart & I can tell you are a great doctor, but this is something that I've lived so it's important to me. Thank you if you've read this far into my novel! lol
John Paul Jones from Led zeppelin did the string arrangements on this and a few of the songs on the album. and they really make the song especially at the end of the song where the melody line keeps rising.
When I was a child, we had a chihuahua we got as a pup. After a couple years, my mom got another puppy, one a little bigger than the chihuahua. The original dog tried to make friends with the new puppy, but the puppy was too rough. And the new puppy now got all the attention; she felt invisible & abandoned. Well, the chihuahua gave up. She stopped eating, & we didn't realize it for a full week. By then, she was very weak & wouldn't come out from under the bed. My mom took her to the vet, but it was too late; she died the next day. So if you question whether dogs can be depressed, I know they can, because our family had a chihuahua so depressed she committed suicide. Dogs can feel the whole range of emotions we humans can. So treat your pets with compassion & empathy.
Thank you, Ty. I, too, have found God is the answer. The Bible states God is evident in the world around us. He is with you always. I watched this video on MTV when it was first released. The group may not realize they have translated the words of the Bible. "Ear not, for I am with you always". How tragic when a person gives up on life! Thank you for being open and honest about your belief.
If you can find it watch Take It To The Limit by the Eagles with Randy Meisner singing it in 1977. Randy hated doing the song due to the extremely high note at the end. But Glenn Frey and Don Henley would bully him into singing it and Randy was so nervous. He keeps his eyes closed throughout and licking his lips, which is a sign of stress. But he kills it. But he left soon after.
Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!! Please do a reaction to ua-cam.com/video/UJ2_HttFkkc/v-deo.html MRM, you will absolutely LOVE Randy Meisner's voice in Take It To The Limit. The Eagles overall had awesome harmonies. Seven Bridges Road is perfect example. ua-cam.com/video/hufU6MIS2vw/v-deo.html Sadly, neither of these videos will be here for long. UA-cam is always pulling Eagles videos. :(
My best friend Meredith died in 1997 aged 34 of cancer. She had always planned to have this played at her funeral, and at special times in my life or when things have been bad, this will come on the radio. I know that it's her, letting me know that she's around. She left 2 little girls behind, so wrong for her to suffer and for them to lose their mum. I miss her every day. Beautiful g irl.
Sorry, me again. I met my best friend in 1972. We were both in the Civil Air Patrol and met at a two week encampment at Plattsburg Air Force Base, now closed. He is retired from the New York State Trooper's after 32 year's. He risked his life every day working under cover assigned with the DEA and Homeland Security. He helped clean up after 9/11. He is a hero to me. Another fact is he came to this country from Haiti. I kind of pushed him into going to see Buckethead at Sony Hall in N.Y.C with me. While there, you know the music's loud, so I kept leaning over to see if he wanted to leave. Well, a beautiful black lady was seated not far from us and on her way back to her seat, she stopped and said how wonderful it was to see the two of us as best friend's. She gave me a kiss on the cheek and I walked her to her seat only a few feet away. A night I will never forget. Best, Chris
I really enjoyed this video and totally appreciate your honesty when talking about real-life stuff. I struggle with depression, unfortunately, but I do feel better after watching good people enjoying good music.... maybe I'm just easily pleased 😁 Seriously though, keep doing what you're doing because no good human will ever want you not to. Love the vids and I look forward to many more. All the best, cheers!
Thanks so much. You're a welcoming light amongst dark days. I'm loving my music right now... and I thank you for that. We all need a little kick up the bum/ass/rear sometimes! Love and best wishes.
How is this song sad? Its about hanging on even when everything feels like its going wrong because everyone goes through that. This is a uplifting song. Tells you to hang on.
When your pet loses his brother and sister, and he is the last one left, you will see true depression. He looked for them every day for a month, looking into each room and calling out to them. After that month he gave a terrible sigh and stopped looking. He sat facing the wall. I realized I had to overcome my own sorrow to help him. I began taking him outside with me every day. Gave both of us something else to think about. Yes, your pets can be depressed. Your pets can feel sorrow. They miss the ones they loved.
As a person that suffers from depression and has tried to commit suicide. This song has saved me when I go through my bouts of depression. It tells me that I'm not alone and God is always with me.
I was a preteen or so when this song came out. I couldn't admit it at the time because I felt like my friends would laugh at me, but I've always liked this song.
I always found comfort in this song knowing I wasn’t the only one who hurt. Snapped me back to reality and others hurt over heavier things. Never seen this video before though. We didn’t have MTV just 3 channels with the dial aerial antenna with foil on the antenna on the tv
There is a live concert version of this song, I can't seem to find it though. But Michael Stype has the words on a big screen tv behind and above him and got all 60,000 people sing along with him. It's an outdoor concert somewhere in Europe, I think. And, Damn, he had alot of crying, singing fans in that audience.
I always watch the video your talking about. It's outside in the cold you can see his breath when he is singing I think it's raining too. Stipe is bald in the video and looks different but his voice hasn't changed any and he put his ❤ and soul and tears into it and it's a longer version than this one was.
Was loving the commentary. I heard a speaker once say, I don't care what you don't believe in. Believe in something and then act as that belief would lead you. So many people get caught up in arguing for the sake of arguing. In closing everyone has the right to be wrong.
It's a song of hope that tells you to not throw in the towel, however when it's played it taps into the feeling of being small and hopeless. I have felt suicidal all day drinking inside while it rained and this song is exactly what I felt.
I love this song because it is sad but at the same time it is uplifting to me. God has our back even in our darkest times. He puts people in our lives to help us also so that we can share our love, laughter & even our pain. God Bless you & I love your channel.
The best rendition I heard of this song was from a very unusual place. Britain's Got Talent, an old pensioner (about 80), sang this song after telling the audience that his wife of X number of years had passed away and he was singing it for her. Not a trained voice but boy he did a good job had you in the palm of his hand.
They wrote this for teens who were suiciding after Kurt, and before. Teens who were depressed and didn't know that situational depression isn't forever.
That guy was feeling that song for sure and even if they have all the money and fame their heart could wish for they still aren't happy the most blessed people ( materially) kill themselves! I find comfort in trying to help others it helps your perspective when u are depressed! That's how I make it when I'm down!
I had to wait to watch this video. This song gets me very emotional. It came out a couple of years before my little brother committed suicide. I think about him EVERY DAY...
they were in my hometown making a video - I had to go to set and as I was walking by a Cargo elevator it opened and there was Michael Stipe by himself - I just stared at him and I couldn't even move - the doors closed and I missed my chance to stand beside him - but i would have probably embarrassed myself - I will never forget that moment
Saddest music video? You actually had me looking up THE saddest song+video combination. Into the Night by The Motorhomes has me crying from 0 to 100 after the opening line.

Soothing music. Healing.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. So beautiful.
Like in the movie: G.I. Jane: I never seen a wild thing feel sorry for itself. A bird will fall frozen dead from bough without ever having felt sorry for itself. This is a quote from D.H Lawrence.
the song, sentiment and theme is about suicide, it's final.
Thank you if you've read this far into my novel! lol
I'd like to introduce you to my favorite band. ELO - Telephone Line. I think you'll like it.
Man, you are inspiring! Thank you.
This song means a lot to a lot of people thanks.
John Paul Jones from Led zeppelin did the string arrangements on this and a few of the songs on the album. and they really make the song especially at the end of the song where the melody line keeps rising.
I still remember the first time I heard this as a teenager. Knew it was a classic from the first line...
And this video is truly amazing...
You are so inspiring! It’s just really hard for me battling with my depression and all of my other serious diagnosis.
"Take comfort in your friends." That's what saved me. My friends.
Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!! Please do a reaction to ua-cam.com/video/UJ2_HttFkkc/v-deo.html
MRM, you will absolutely LOVE Randy Meisner's voice in Take It To The Limit. The Eagles overall had awesome harmonies. Seven Bridges Road is perfect example.

Sadly, neither of these videos will be here for long. UA-cam is always pulling Eagles videos. :(
Keep doing what you do I can testify to the fact what you are saying is true. Just listening to you helps me get my mind right. Thanks
Just subscribed! Love your videos...keep’em coming!
Beautiful g
irl.
I struggle with depression, unfortunately, but I do feel better after watching good people enjoying good music.... maybe I'm just easily pleased 😁
Seriously though, keep doing what you're doing because no good human will ever want you not to.
Love the vids and I look forward to many more. All the best, cheers!
Thanks so much.
You're a welcoming light amongst dark days. I'm loving my music right now... and I thank you for that. We all need a little kick up the bum/ass/rear sometimes!
Love and best wishes.
One of the best most powerful songs ever written
i totally agree with what you are saying----jesus is the one we should pour out our burdens to.
The best video art piece/commentary ever. Bringing it back to consciousness....
As a person that suffers from depression and has tried to commit suicide. This song has saved me when I go through my bouts of depression. It tells me that I'm not alone and God is always with me.
Thank you for your witness of faith!! Our God is an awesome God!
I was a preteen or so when this song came out. I couldn't admit it at the time because I felt like my friends would laugh at me, but I've always liked this song.
I loved your style on how you reviewed this song. You're a sensitive man - which is awesome, just like this song. Take care!!
I always found comfort in this song knowing I wasn’t the only one who hurt. Snapped me back to reality and others hurt over heavier things. Never seen this video before though. We didn’t have MTV just 3 channels with the dial aerial antenna with foil on the antenna on the tv
The artist you were trying to think of is Phil Collins and the lead singer of REM is Michael Stipe
I had it wrong. It wasn't an old pensioner it was a church of England priest who sang Everybody Hurts. It it was great.
Thank you for the comments after your reaction...
This always makes me cry.
they were in my hometown making a video - I had to go to set and as I was walking by a Cargo elevator it opened and there was Michael Stipe by himself - I just stared at him and I couldn't even move - the doors closed and I missed my chance to stand beside him - but i would have probably embarrassed myself - I will never forget that moment
The moment we let go of our burdens we become lighter and ready to move on.
its about finding perspective that we had lost
MRM is such a great influence on the world, I hope to see more people subscribe to him. AFTER they find out what he's about.
If this song does not bring a tear to your eye something is very wrong.
Four for four!!! God never gives us more than we can handle. But he also never said don't ask for help!
Phil Collins did the soundtrack for "Tarzan"!!! I hope you have a wonderful and blessed day my friend!!! 😊😊😊😊 🐧🐧
Love the Tarzan song
You were talking about Phil Collins.
One of the most heart felt songs ever
Saddest music video?
You actually had me looking up THE saddest song+video combination.
Into the Night by The Motorhomes has me crying from 0 to 100 after the opening line.
I apologize by five finger death punch
