If you're going through hell, keep going. I almost ended myself 14 years ago. Turns out I didn't want to stop living, I just wanted to stop living the way I was living. I thank God every day that I'm still here. Please talk to someone if you are thinking about harming yourself. Help is out there. All you have to do is ask.
My darling best friend Meredith died in April 1997 from cancer aged just 34, leaving two little girls. She had chosen this song for her funeral as soon as she knew she was terminal. She went into a coma at home on the Friday night and I sat with her, stroking her hair and holding her hand, thinking she would wake up, then her little 2 yr old daughter came in saying mumma, mumma, to get her attention and there was no reaction from her and then I knew, and started to sob. We left that night, and we’re coming back the next day when my husband got the phone call, as they didn’t want me to find out over the phone that she had gone. We got into the car for the one hour drive, I was sobbing and this came onto the radio as soon as he started the car. I knew it was her, telling me that she was with me. I again went and sat with her after she had died, and told her how much I loved her. This song has come on at various times, like leaving the cemetery after taking flowers to her and even after I hit and killed a rabbit and was feeling so terrible about hurting an animal. I know it’s always her way of letting me know she is around me. I miss that girl still every day of my life. She is a grandma now, and she would have adored those sassy little girls, just like their beautiful grandmother.
My emotions changed very rapidly reading this heart-warming post ms Karen. Hope all is well for you and your husband and the girls. Peace and love for all !
This song breaks my heart every time. Such a tribute to our common humanity, and it points the way towards both compassion for others and hope for ourselves.
At one point, I sliced my wrists. Hoping to bleed out. I was done with life. I had no one. I felt like a complete failure. Everything in my life was a shambles. But I had a friend that called me. She was on her way over. I couldn't let her find me that way. She started ringing the doorbell. I emotionally, I broke down when I answered the door. The took me to the ER. They stitched me up. I went into a behavior health hospital. A few weeks name took me into their home. Helped me pick up the pieces. Eventually, I got a job. Got my life back on track, and have become stronger. With my friends help I'm here today. Today, she lays in a hospital. Having had a stroke. I'm scared. I need hope and prayer.
Stay strong. Your friend would want that, and so do I actually. Loved your story, tugged at my heart. Thankyou for sharing! Please stay strong, lots of love and prayers going your way!
I’ve been there to, God is my strength an all you have to do is ask him. Your friend would want you to cherish the life given you and this is just another way God challenges an gives you strength when your faced with these events. We are never alone and there is always hope. God bless your not alone
I’m second oldest of 8 siblings. I”m 70 years old. We put this song on a CD we put together when my brother took his life back in ‘08. It’s a very powerful song and I enjoyed watching you hear it for the first time. I just discovered you today watching your experience with Jackson Browne. It really gives me so much pleasure to see you young people hearing music I have loved so long and see how impactful it is on you. Brings tears to my eyes.
Nailed it man. This is a timeless beautiful song. The video really makes it even more impactful although its a little weird and unexpected at first. When the people are in the cars they are all trapped alone with their thoughts and problems, yet they're all in the same traffic jam on the same road. It hits me hard every time when they all get out of the cars and move forward together.
Dude, how come it's taken me so long to find your channel. Your reactions are really great, I love the sincerity. You deserve a lot more subs. This is one of my favourite songs ever, by one of the greatest groups. I'm bipolar and struggle with su.....icidal thoughts on a continuous basis and this my go-to songs for this times. Shout-out from South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
I’m a 90s gal, I love everything REM did! This was about remembering that everybody hurts, so everyone is right there with you ! Michael Stipe had a lot of problems with depression; he was very much trying to help others and try to remember himself 😢💖🎶🙏🏻
This song is so special and I believe it is one of the most important songs ever written. We all have trials and troubles and need to hear this message to hold on and not give up. It's my main message to the world. Thanks Shon!! Much love to you xx
I graduated in 1993. I’m positive this specific song probably saved the lives of a whole bunch of my classmates and people my age later in college and beyond.
My friend just lost his mother. I know how hard that is, but I can’t find words. This song appeared. I selected your video. The moment you said it was the song to send to a friend. I knew. Anyone who’s struggling now, find the strength to reach out to a friend. Shon, you’re in for a journey. Keep shining
This song is an inspiration it really is. I’ve lost a 21-year-old daughter I lost my brother when we both were shot he was murdered and I survived and so many more people in my life have gone way too young and there were times I wanted to give up a song like this makes you realize you’re not alone everybody hurts
Everyone can relate to it at some point in there life as i have recently, lost my brother over 30 yrs ago to Aids, he was born on 21st July, then my son on that same day, 21st July nearly 3 yrs ago & my older brother who i idolized you guessed it on that same day in 2023 Overdose, he was close to my Son & struggled with his death & depression, they both lived with my mum who also passed away 2 months later in September, it nearly took me too & im still struggling but im strong mentally & refuse to be beaten
This song came out at a difficult time in my life - thankful that it did. Always been a fan of REM. Check out their other songs - most are more light hearteded. 🙂
What I love so much about R.E.M., & music in general, is that it can be interpreted different by every person listening, & mean something different emotionally, depending on where you are in your life..... 💞💞💞 This song is truly a masterpiece!
This song is just so poignant and beautiful. I love this guy's voice. Recommendation: "Jumper" by Third Eye Blind. It's one of those catchy songs that gets in your head and you can't stop singing it, but in a good way.
Fellow reaction channel here! Well, I haven't done any in 2-3 yrs but I still rock with everyone. Like your style, Bro! The video is very emotional and I feel you hit on MANY points to a "T". Keep doing your thing, Shon, and stay true to yourself. You need to know that you have an impact on others watching your channel so please make each day count! Blessings, Bro!! PS... I've been watching you for awhile now and this reaction made me smach the sub button. Maybe I'll be crushing some reactions in the near future because you make me want to dust off my microphone and camera :)
@@shon1303 for sure! Means a lot to get that much needed nudge as encouragement. Many don't realize all the effort it takes to do these reactions. Furthermore, u engaging with your viewers is really big. It shows that you aren't just smoking mirrors with everything you talk about. Do yourself a favor and check out YYZ by Rush (live in RIO). Shonrah, Your insights were refreshingly analytical. These and your very genuine enjoyment of music are exceptionally rewarding. Hoping you continue, John
Thanks so much, Shon.. what a beautiful song.. and the video also has so much to convey (actually pretty much genius!)... I knew the song before I saw the video, but still had to watch it several times to appreciate the depth (those captions.. what people are feeling and thinking.. that nobody knows)... appreciate your reaction!
I was at a point, I felt life was strangling me an hope was far far away, it’s quite surreal after the fact, but my living angel gave me hope an that was my friend Joyce at work, she told me something told her to come find me an she did God new I needed a hug an someone who would listen. I hear this song an it’s my anthem a one for all who’s had a desperately low point in their lives. Human connection can save lives an my connection saved me.
R.E.M always stayed true to themselves and their music. And didn’t sellout to the industry to make different music. I liked everything they released. They always knew how to make great feel good music.
Thanks so much for that empathetic reaction! A friend of mine took his life not long ago. It still breaks me that he didn’t take comfort in friends. Cause he had us. Since decades. But he didn’t open up. Either his wife nor us knew that it was that dark for him. So please all of you out there struggling i beg you to take this comfort - even if it seems impossible to open up! R.I.P. Christoph finally ❤
I remember this song mainly because it was played at my best friends sons funeral who drowned when he was 21 yrs old. I always think of him when I hear it. Brings a tear to my eye even after 30 years.
It will make you see the whole world in a different light, everyone has their own issues so always be kind to whoever you meet this world would be so much better off if we all just did that, its not hard people!!!
Something to think about here. This song is over 31 years old!! This was on REM's "Automatic for the People" that was released in the fall of 1992. This song is as valid today as it was 30 years ago and 30 years BEFORE that. Timeless message.
No matter how bad you feel or how dark it may seem death is a one way street and there is no coming back. No matter how bad it is existing is always better than oblivion plus it can always improve!
Stunning Song. It was written by REM Drummer Bill Berry, who quit REM in ‘97 to become a Farmer. Ironically Berry didn’t even play drums on the song as a Univox drum machine was used. Makes you wonder why he left.😉
A lot of people confuse writing music with writing lyrics and REM always confused this further by always crediting the whole band for every song. The music was developed by Bill Berry but Stipe would have written the lyrics as they always have done. Peter Buck, Mike Mills or Bill Berry or in some case by session players or extended members like Scott McCaughey or Peter Holsapple would bring in an idea to the studio or sound check and then the whole band would develop that to a piece of music that they would hand over to Michael for inspiration for the lyrics then he would get the lyrics down and they would get the track recorded. Great way to work wish more bands would do this.
They are all still friends. The toll of touring and brain aneurysm would have played a huge part in Bills departure from the band. They have all always been extremely private people too so maybe the spotlight was too much for Bill.
REM, no doubt, saved lives with this song. “Don’t Give Up”, by Peter Gabriel (with Kate Bush) should be next. It’s another very inspirational song that has probably saved lives.
The only thing better than this song is the video. You get to see everyone’s thoughts and how everyone is hurting in different ways. This was shot in San Antonio, Tx when I lived there.

There's such a raw quality of hurt in his voice.

A tribute for those who have given up and seek suicide as a solution. They reach out to let these people know they are not alone.

The video was based on a scene from an Italian film called 8 1/2.
Beautiful song and video complimented it very well.
Another great REM song is 'Welcome to the Occupation' from the album Document.
This is such a timeless song, because I believe it's about the unity of the human experience. One of my favorites 😍
REM has many great records and Automatic for The People is probably top 3 for me
💜The lead vocalist suffered with chronic depression. Love your re actions and enjoy watching your channel. 💜✌️🇦🇺🎶🍀🎵💜
There was an epidemic of suicides in the 90s this is one of the reasons they wrote this song. It’s beautiful
It is about his friend Curt Cobain
This song is just so poignant and beautiful. I love this guy's voice. Recommendation: "Jumper" by Third Eye Blind. It's one of those catchy songs that gets in your head and you can't stop singing it, but in a good way.
I listened to this a LOT in the days after Kurt Cobain killed himself. It's a great song for when you feel alone and hopeless.
It has been said that Kurt was listening to this album when he died....
@@mojomusica.0169 It's possible I even had heard that and it was the catalyst for my doing so. I just remember that I turned to it in my grief.
I appreciate you and your reactions. ❤
Some songs are literal life savers.
The mans hypnotic, like old mate from Powder Finger, just completely hypnotised by their voice.
