You had me on the verge of tears Van as you were speaking. Everybody needs a hug sometimes. You just don't know when. Be observant folks, especially to those close to you. Don't be afraid to hug someone if you think they need it. I remember once my brother gave me a hug when I didn't expect it. Somehow he knew I needed it, and it made such a difference that day. Thank god!
I hear you saying you struggle with showing certain feelings simply because you weren't raised that way. I personally feel you're pretty open. In the first 2 minutes of this video you were super vulnerable and open. Thats super hard to do. Give yourself the credit you deserve. 🖤

This song was played to me when I was struggling to get clean and sober and that was 29yrs ago and as you said it was the hug 🤗 I needed and Iv not looked back, love from Scotland 🏴
The beauty of this song is that is basically says we are in all in the same boat. Every single one of us is going through some shit, and it's not about comparing shit - who is worse off etc - it's about just realizing everyone you meet is going through something that means EVERYTHING to them. You may have gone through worse, but they haven't, and it's killing them inside. Just be a good bastard to everybody you possibly can be a good bastard too!
It's funny you say that. I started watching reactions because it's nice to interact with adults (stay at home mom), but I've really enjoyed learning about other people's perspectives throughout the country. It's really a blessing to be able to do this.
My boys from Athens Georgia. This song is so powerful....back in 80s it single handedly spiked suicide hotlines. Crying is not a sign of weakness but of strength.....so hold on and let it out brother 😓🙏🤴💗🕊️
Gen X really needed this song. We were all taught to "suck it up" and "walk it off." My dad was a Vietnam Vet, and depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses were not "real. " I know that i can never understand what my father went through at 22, but everybody hurts
😢This song has SAVED so many lives....including mine...in so many dark and hopeless times.💔 It has been used a lot in suicide awareness campaigns - it's heart-breaking, but somehow gives you hope? Such an important song for so many people. Like the song says Everybody Hurts & some of us almost take that final step. Michael Stipe was a good friend of Kurt Cobain, and was devastated when he committed suicide just a year after this single was released. But as we know, for some people, the PAIN is just too much 🖤 R.E.M. will always be remembered for giving people this timeless saviour.
I’ve seen my father cry once, when his mom died. My brother doesn’t cry either. I, on the other hand, cry frequently. It’s cleansing and I always feel better afterward. Food for thought. 😘
A lot of men self soothe, the number of times I’ve cried on my own but never in front of anyone. It’s the equivalent of burying your head in the pillow or under the covers.
Some of us try and want to, but nothing comes out. Sometimes I use anger as a release. A lot of us don’t know any other way, and now we’ve come down the road so far we can’t find our way back. It sucks to be numb.
I've watched many of your reactions and enjoyed them. But, this one showed your heart to me. Just know that you have a real fan now. God Bless and keep up the good work son. From an old white lady who now has your back in prayer.
I have watched your reactions before and many of your sons. I don’t pretend to know what’s going on in your life, but I want to say that I saw your heart today and know what a good man you are. This song has helped so many have hope, even myself at 16 years old when this song was released. It’s been on repeat so many different times in my life. They’ve received thousands upon thousands of letters letting them know that they didn’t commit suicide because of hearing this song. I believe like you said, one of the greatest messages here is to really talk to each other, to reach out and check on the others and to share our real feelings when we need to. No matter who we are, what color we are, or what we believe,We’ve all been experiencing the same emotions as human beings. You are not alone. You are loved, you are important, and you are valued. You are enough for whatever your face.
This is what music is all about to me. Music will always have your back, it will bring out emotions and you need to give in to them unreservedly. Much love to you my man.
I’ve got some real heavy shit on my shoulders right now and it is very moving to see someone connect with a beautiful song like this. We’ve all been there at various times. We all need some reassuring comfort.
Music is a universal language that transcends. Superfiicially, neither of us would think that four white boys from Georgia could elicit these feelings in us. I am 72 years old and my mother made sure I was exposed to all music and performers as a child. I grew up with 50s doo-wo-, rockabilly, ballads, and so on into the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and so on. Raising my kids, it was important to me to take them back and expose them to all that music and encourage them to stay current.in their lifetimes. Through music we can feel what the performer feels or what they want to convey. Some have more to say or say it better, but they all should get a chance to grab you. You are never too old to experience new feelings, meet new realities, expand your perceptions and understanding of your fellow man. I enjoy seeing your sincere efforts to give music a chance to expand your consciousness.
The song is "like a hug". Indeed it is, it says each one of us is not alone, if we look around we'll see a smile, a word of trust. Trust things will get better, they don't stay the same forever. When I first heard this song and the video I cried, I still do. I know hurt but I trust I'm not alone. My friend, I pray you will feel peace, joy. Just trust, you are not alone. A hug from Porto, Portugal.
I highly recommend checking out the video for this song. It complements the song perfectly. It’s about a bunch of people stuck in a traffic jam (separate but together) and subtitles showing their personal thoughts and struggles, then they all just get out of their cars at once and start walking together. It is absolutely beautiful.
Van, sharing your vulnerability is absolutely beautiful. ❤ My husband "had enough" and hung himself at 45 yrs old recently. I'm lost. This song is extremely personal for me. Thank you Van.
@@3generboiler Thank you. Struggling at the moment. October, used to be my favorite month as a child, has become a series of traumatic flashbacks and trauma. Suicides, deaths, and violence. Last suicide attempt less than a yr ago. I'm 59 and understand my illness well. My Profession is in Forensic Psychiatry ironically. Plead for help at a Compass Health Network here in Columbia MO, last week. I'm physically disabled and was told I would receive a Case Manager to help me get to my Psychiatric and Psychological appointments. However, because I don't have a drug addiction I don't "qualify". I'm beside myself as I face the abyss of October...again, thank you so much for your kind words 🙏💜✌
Lost my mam just over a month ago she was 80 and it still hurts like hell. To see your reaction proves we are not alone and we all have our own pain to shoulder. Take care my friend you bring joy laughter and have touched so many people all around the world. Thank you for letting us be a part of your life. Slainte from ireland take care.
Empathy, Things like this...they not only remind us all of the moments when we have hurt and how we held that pain... But they also remind us that sometimes the kindest thing that we can do for other people is let them get through their pain too, and be there...just be there.
God loves you. We are his kids. Watching you being so touched by this song while going through it brings tears. The road can be rocky but we are not alone my friend. I've been there.
It doesn't matter how many times I listen to this song, or watch people react to it, it still brings me to tears, knowing so many people suffer on an every day basis.......Loved your honest reaction, and love your wanting to bring us all together, that would be such a wonderful thing!!! Crying is not only tears, it's a feeling that can be held inside, or let flow on the outside........
Nothing wrong with getting emotional once in a while. Yesterday I watched a documentary about british fighter pilots who met their German enemies about 70 years later. Those brave men cried. And I truly consider them to be some of the toughest guys this world have ever seen. Keep up the good work and enjoy every day.
This song got me through so much pain, so many bad times, so many attempts to... well. It helped to remember that I wasn't the only one hurting in the world.
It's called common ground. No matter our culture we all have that common ground. Sorrow, hope, depression. Happiness, joy and delight. We have more in common then differences. Thank you.
R.E.M is one of the best bands to come out of the 80s. Personally I think the time around this album is some of their finest work. "Find the River" and "Nightswimming" from the same album are amazing songs.
Wow- " you figured out your 'Why? '"... That is just amazing! Wish more people did what you're doing- listening and learning to appreciate someone/something different. Cuz that's the real path to peace and love and understanding! 🥰
Thank you for your kindness, I'm at a moment in my life where I'm ready to leave this world and it was going to be today. I have struggled with what I have for an years and I'm tired. I needed someone and I tuned in to your channel and while you were talking I saw compassion. I now can say I'm going to hold out for a bit and see what happens. I know one thing, today I saw you and listened to you and saw so much love and compassion. I needed it today. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and may God bless you.
I can't make things better for you. Please hold on. One day I hope you find peace and happiness here in this life. Hold on and know you are not alone. My prayers are with you
@@matimus100 You my friend need to find Jesus if you don't think praying can make a difference. I have seen many people brought from dark places through the power of prayer and supplication in the name of Jesus Christ children included.
I was raised the same way. When I saw this video, I started crying. Hard. Still makes me cry. I let myself cry more now. That shit feels great. Thanks for posting even tho it got blocked.
Great description of this song "a hug"! Exactly right! I cry every time I hear this song. It's incredibly moving & everyone should hear it..at least once~
Man I needed this song! Sometimes don't even know what emotion to show and I turn on music and a song comes along that gets me and I just cry. I'm a very strong and reserved guy, don't show those emotions in front of people much, not because I'm trying to be macho but because I'm usually the one giving others support so I am the strong one. But every once in a while I can't hold it back and in the quiet of my kitchen late at night, listening to music, many times reactions I just lose it. Don't know what you're going through my friend but much love and support and a big ol' hug from the midwest!! We DO need each other, more than many know. It's time we listen to each other, support each other, have one another's backs. We're all in this together...let's show it!
My first comment was right at the beginning of the video. Having heard the rest, I would like to pray for you, and your family. Whatever is going on, I can assure you, is in God's hands. Let it out, cry, scream, do what you need to do. At the end of the day, break out that good book, read your favorite passages, reflect on how it makes you feel, and what those passages and words made you feel the first time you read them. Then find something new, flip the pages, find new favorite passages, ones that will only make sense once you let them. Godspeed my friend, his word will heal you, along with prayer from yourself, family, and others. You are a great man, and a great father. I will be keeping that in my prayers for you and your family.
This is a prime example of the skillfull use of written lyrics to accomplish the main Important aim of producing art that of causing a reaction, touching the soul, connecting, acknowledging, commenting and voicing concern. This song has saved many, many peoples lives since its release, proven by vast amounts of letters received over the years by the group /lyric writer. This song should be listened to at least once during everyone's life. If anyone listens to this and is never effected they must seriously be dead inside. As a suffered of depression and suicidal ideation this song has saved me many, many times.
I can tell this hit you. It does me every time I hear it. Then I remember, so I will tell you. You are appreciated, you are great whoever you choose to be, and even though we all hurt and all cry, most importantly, you are loved.
I felt like throwing my hands today and instead I listened to this as an old song from the early 90’s. My teen years. Bless your heart for wanting to learn more. This is quite beautiful. I love all y’all, humans tho y’all are crazy as heck! 💁♀️
The current state of this nation of ours is making everyone hurt... If we just shut out the divisive media and start listening and talking to each other again, we're all good. We have to look at each other's eyes and not just yell at each other on social media, however. I can tell you have a warm and open spirit and aura through these videos. You are communicating who you are every time you look into the camera. Thanks ~ ♥
Michael Stipe had/has the ability to express complex feelings in very simple terms. He's as much a poet with his lyrics as Jim Morrison was. Van, this is a song that will essentially always make me cry. I'm 47. I'm not talking bawling my eyes out, but tears will flow pretty freely. A few different things make that happen. Displays of selflessness, even in movies or video games, are a big trigger. As a kid I was... an empath. I could always feel for myself what people around me were feeling. Even in scenarios I was imagining, I could feel fear, or grief, or joy, or whatever, and music is an enormous stimulant. Then when I was 10, I had a really rough year. Thought a lot about what the world would be like if I wasn't in it. Through necessity, and a lot of effort, I shut off the part of me that was feeling all of those extra, outside things because I couldn't cope with the things that were being specifically aimed at me AND the things I was picking up 2nd hand from around me. While I had people to talk to, I didn't take advantage of them because I didn't want to burden them with something I felt like I should be able to handle. Plus I didn't have the tools to discuss them. As a result of shutting that part of me off, throughout my teens and my 20s I was, as my mother put it, a cavalier little bastard. But now, as a settled, mature-ish adult, I have the coping mechanisms that I didn't have as a child. I can feel the things that make me cry, and allow myself to do so, without being overwhelmed. The hardest part of it, though, was giving myself permission to be the feeling person I was born to be. You're a good man. Don't hold yourself captive to your upbringing. If you don't want to, I mean.
We understand. Loved your description of the song ! It is about reaching out to others . So easy to forget that we are all so connected by the same experiences. Hold on
I met r.e.m. several times and Micheal stipe, the lead singer, is just a beautiful soul. Thanks for the wonderful reaction. This song hits me profusely as i am a 3time suicide survivor with many issues.. loneliess and darkness is my best friend these days.. Please react to home free ft Billy Gillman one voice
I feel you brother. We were raised not to show emotion or any weakness. It came in handy at times …. Other times it was a curse. We’re old enough now to let it hang out and be ourselves. And show ourselves. I’m no hippie but peace and love to you!
Man….that thing sharing ones self with others is the most beautiful thing i have heard in a while. I think you have a real contribution to make that everyone can benefit from!
I can see this song got to you ,the words are so true no matter what colour, race you are we are all one race the human race and we all hurt. Bless you and your loved ones.
I love that you found your why! Much love to you! I'm a 48 year old white woman and I have trouble crying too. I suffered a trauma in my life and I ignore my emotions. The look on your face says it all to me.
Is a universal truth....we all have same things to go thru just circumstances and players differ but at end of day we are all on same boat....Bright Blessings to all
It’s not any individual person’s fault that art from other cultures is shunned by our ancestors. It’s our job to break those walls! You are solid Van! Respect ✊ ❤️☮️
This song saved my life too. Going through the motions, hurting inside, unable to cry. Driving to work one day and the song came on. I started sobbing in the middle of traffic during rush hour on the toll road. When I got to work I called a doctor and got help.
YOU NEED TO SEE THE VIDEO. This song alone has saved me from ending my life. I can't listen to it without crying. I share it all the time on FB because I want it to save someone like it did me.
I remember hearing this song for the first time. I remember the first time I saw the video. It still holds the same power. Michael Stipe is an incredible artist. Their 2003 live in Glastonbury performance of this song is so powerfully.
Your intro before you played the song is the best words I’ve heard in a long time. To get along we must first respect and understand each other. You are amazing!
My dad's mother died when he was 17 from a long battle with cancer. His dad came home and said - mother is dead, we don't cry and walked away. My dad didn't mourn his mother until he was 50 when his father passed. He balled his eyes out at the funeral, not over his dad but over his mother, he only had anger left for his dad….. I think me and my sister's life would have been better if my grandfather had satt with him that day and cried together. We need the release tears bring, it's immensely important for your well being. I really liked what you said in the beginning of the video. I started watching reaction videos specifically by black americans as I didn’t know how else to show my support from the other side of the world. Plus all I ever knew was about the suffering and musical culture, this way I somewhat get to know you as people as well (sorry if that sounded ignorant, but we are all out here learning). Much love from Sweden
I bought the album in the nineties, and I loved this song, and in the 2000 I lost some good friends, through accidents, suicide, drug overdoses and I lived in a town of 6000 people, I lost atleast 8 friends, two sets of brothers. And this song brings back good times of when they were alive. RIP all my friends.
My beloved cat Latika passed away 4 days ago. I created a Playlist with all the 90s songs I used to listen to when one of my friends died. This song is getting me through it. My 3 dogs and I are really down and really feel the absence of my Babygirl. She was with me through homelessness, breast cancer, a bad car accident and right up until her last breath, she was right by my side. On her last night, she mustered up the strength to eat some tuna then she went right into my bedroom doorway and fell asleep and never woke up. I've never been more broken. A loyal girl until her last breath. She will be cremated today, I can't believe it. She waited for me to be good in life, in my dream university and cancer free. What a good girl, thanks Latika. We're here holding on. Forever in our hearts 💔🐾💔🐾💔🐾💔
I never used THIS song in particular, but I used to make mixed "tapes" (showing my age lmao, the tapes later became cds!😉) to show love, a crush, I'm sorry... etc It's so fantastic, that we will ALL share this one thing in common: that music is magic & anyone can connect thru it!♥️
I’ve been an REM fan since the early 80s and appreciate all their art, both the music and the videos……but what I appreciate even more is seeing the message and meaning getting through to someone new and the emotional effect it has. So don’t apologise for anything, show your feelings and don’t hold back. Keep up the great work on here my friend from afar……
This was very deep. I think that we can learn so much from each other. We don’t have to be alike to understand and care for each other. What a great way of thinking.
*THANK YOU GUYS FOR BEING THE BEST SUPPORTERS IN THE 🌍‼️‼️*

It doesn't matter how many times I listen to this song, or watch people react to it, it still brings me to tears, knowing so many people suffer on an every day basis.......Loved your honest reaction, and love your wanting to bring us all together, that would be such a wonderful thing!!! Crying is not only tears, it's a feeling that can be held inside, or let flow on the outside........
One of the best songs of all time in my opinion. Is in my book , Love it Thank you.
Its like listening to a hug for sure. But its also like listening to pain explained. Great song. Great group.
This song got me through so much pain, so many bad times, so many attempts to... well. It helped to remember that I wasn't the only one hurting in the world.
This song is genuine. Open. Vulnerable. 'a hug' is perfect.
Find the river is pure poetry and perfection in every way
Yes Find a river is perfection
Wow- " you figured out your 'Why? '"... That is just amazing! Wish more people did what you're doing- listening and learning to appreciate someone/something different. Cuz that's the real path to peace and love and understanding! 🥰
I was taught that it takes a strong man to cry. There's nothing wrong with showing emotion.❤️
amen
My prayers are with you
That one always gets you in the feels no matter how many times you hear it! Heard this song 100s of times and it never gets old.
Music is a fantastic way to connect every person! Yes!
We all hurt and we need to stop hurting each other. 🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕
yeah good luck with that
Praying or Karma doesn't save innocent children's lives
@@matimus100 You my friend need to find Jesus if you don't think praying can make a difference. I have seen many people brought from dark places through the power of prayer and supplication in the name of Jesus Christ children included.
I was raised the same way. When I saw this video, I started crying. Hard. Still makes me cry. I let myself cry more now. That shit feels great. Thanks for posting even tho it got blocked.
Great description of this song "a hug"! Exactly right! I cry every time I hear this song. It's incredibly moving & everyone should hear it..at least once~
Thanks R.E.M for this song! Everybody out there: hang on!!!
You found one of the great ones. This song saved my life once when I was a kid.
I heard it said that "big boys don't cry, but men do".
What a great way to describe this beautiful song in my ear is life itself that hurt and we are learning our lesson.
R.E.M is one of my favourite bands. So good.
This is my fav REM song by far. So inspirational.
Losing My Religion is another great REM song.
This song saved my life. This is a great song .Thanx for revieving it .
Thanks ~ ♥
Well said ❤🤘
Michael Stipe had/has the ability to express complex feelings in very simple terms.
Such a good song. My favorite REM song is Stand.
The world would be a much better place if everyone "lived" by this philosophy
Hugs Van to you... and yours you all will be in my thoughts... And Thank You, for being here you always make this old Hippie Smile...
Make that two old hippies.
I always find R.E.M. very cathartic and they've helped me through some dark times in my life ❤
Your intro before you played the song is the best words I’ve heard in a long time.
That's so sad about your father's loss. Every generation gets better. Thanks for sharing. Hello from Pittsburgh, PA USA.
@@loriwishman1866 thank you :)
Dont know what was better the song or the genuine emotional reaction to it. Big ups fella.
Everything REM touches is brilliant!!! Love these guys
This whole album "Automatic For The People" takes you to another place. I hope whatever your going through, gets resolved soon. Hang in there.
This song gets me everytime one of the impactful songs ever recorded
I never used THIS song in particular, but I used to make mixed "tapes" (showing my age lmao, the tapes later became cds!😉) to show love, a crush, I'm sorry... etc
It's so fantastic, that we will ALL share this one thing in common: that music is magic & anyone can connect thru it!♥️
I’ve been an REM fan since the early 80s and appreciate all their art, both the music and the videos……but what I appreciate even more is seeing the message and meaning getting through to someone new and the emotional effect it has. So don’t apologise for anything, show your feelings and don’t hold back. Keep up the great work on here my friend from afar……
As I battle through my PTSD of when I served, I listen to this song once in a while to drive it home that I'll get through that bout.
Playing For Change: Peace Through Music. Songs from musicians, from all around the world.
This was very deep. I think that we can learn so much from each other. We don’t have to be alike to understand and care for each other. What a great way of thinking.
This is beautiful and tells you that things will get better if you hold on. We were taught to be strong too, but you have to cry sometimes.
Real men show emotion PERIOD
Your words matter.
You matter.
You reminded me that I matter.
God bless brother.
You need 'Time in a Bottle' Jim Croce.
Had it played at my mama and baby brothers funeral after their car crash
All music has a message. Some positive, some negative. Surround yourself with the positive.
