In this 2 part video series. We machine the valvebody casting poured in a previous video. This part too months to complete because I was having so much complications!
Although you are doing a fantastic job with your casting (something I would be wary of trying myself) a few days working with your mate Clark would give you so many insights I bet
I think you need to visit your friend's place and see how he is casting his parts. He obviously has a heck of a setup to pour such a smooth finished part for you. You can always learn something from others. Not to say you aren't doing a great project yourself, but his cast part looks amazing.
I just noticed the vise you have when you honed the cylinder. Is it a rotating jaw Parker Vise? I ask coz if you look at my restoration video of my 1894 swivel jaw vise you’ll see I’m missing the genuine top swivel locking dowel and the genuine front hand crank retainer. I wonder if I could get a mould off of yours or some pictures and dimensions so I can get Clarke to cast me one???? Btw I’m designing patterns right now for a 3x4 vertical based off of HandToolRescue’s engine restoration.
Dang that's very interesting! I had no idea that vice could potentially be so old. When I made this video, I was sharing the shop space with my buddy so the vice is his. We both bought houses after this and moved our stuff to our separate home shops. I will ask him what happened to it.
I just took a look at your video and yeah it looks a lot like yours! Had no idea the jaw swiveled . There are a few small differences from what I can remember about this vice, perhaps a different model or year.
@@fairweatherfoundry715 What is your Instagram name? I’ll contact you over that and send me some more pictures from the catalog. We can also talk about the vertical engine I’m making right now.
Fair Weather Foundry your doing better then I am haven't branched into casting but I do do pattern making and am fixing up my flat belted machines. Have you looked at my video probably up your aley
Hi, you can had ferro phosphorus tablet to make it more fluid and also lower the temperature of the melt. Also you can look at lukygen1001 last video. I hope this help
lol, where are you from? I know clarke also, his stuff is pretty cool, and he defenitely knows what he's doing. I know him from AA and he goes to soule festival, which is where I met him in person there along with a few other metal casters. I was the sand molder while he was pouring the iron.
I'd like to have one about this size but the older style with the slide valve box attached to the casting. I could fabricate the rest of the engine but not the actual cylinder with slide valve box. I'm probably wasting your time because right now I couldn't afford much more than a couple hundred bucks. Maybe I could make the wooden cylinder so all you'd have to do is the casting? I'm sure there's plenty of people that would buy one from you.
I did get it but didn't want to bother you until I got the pattern figured out. I dug out the wood lathe and turned a cylinder with the flanges out of pine but it's too long. I'm also wondering about when I cut it down the center, I'm going to loose the width of the blade and it won't be a completely round cylinder. I'll try and get a picture this week and email you, I don't want to waste your time though, thanks
I'm absolutely floored by your willingness to share your learning curve with us. I learned so much more by seeing your trial and error.
Fantastic series of videos ! Great job my friend !
you sir, put us other slobs to shame with your industry, energy and learning curves.
I have to admire your tenacity with this valve body!
Lol thanks! I am so glad it's finally over and done with!

Yeah he is something else! I would love to pay him a visit as I am sure there is much I could learn! One of these days...
Keep up the good work. Lots to learn poring metal
You need a 1" drill bit to prepare to use the 1.25" minimum boring bar ;-)
At 11:00, Bling! Clark casts a beautiful valve body.
Great to see it finally all coming together!
Matt that looks great, can't wait to see steam chugging from it👏👏👏
Thanks Clarke!
Great job!

Oh recasting is the right call
How soon are you shaking out your castings letting them cool in the mold might give you softer iron
I try to keep em cooling overnight. It helps, but I just need to get better at the whole process and using the ferrosilicon to make it softer.

Nice mill , still got the horizontal as well ??
Yup. It isn't used at much now!

Yeah I am still learning how much to put in and when to do it. Thanks for the comment
You can get a lots of infos from him .He know what he is talking about, and a very nice guy.
Keep going

I am from PA. I met Clarke on Instagram lol. I call him every now and then to ask him advice on metal casting.
Chirpy's Tinkerings Hey Cory 😁
ah, ok.
hey clarke, i didnt realize you were on here too, lol. Defenitely subscribed, lol.
Clarke, could you please summarise what you did differently to acheive that casting quality?
It's lit
You think Clark would sell some castings? Looks like he knows what he's doing
I can ask him and get back to you, but I think he would. What kind of castings are you looking to get?
Clarke E where are you located at?

what is this engine going to be on or as?
My ultimate goal is to make a small vehicle / go kart kind of thing.
