There is a special type of cast iron to make pistion rings out of I think it is gray cast iron

Why is that lathe shaking all over the place? I have an Atlas as well, and it doesn't shake like that unless you're trying to cut something all the way out at 10 inches...

The sand I use I went to the local iron foundry and ask if they would sell me some sand. They said there is a shovel take all I want for free. I got all I needed to last the rest of my life and gave the foreman $50 and said take your wife out to dinner. I have had a good relationship with them ever since. I've done a lot of machining for them. I'm 75 now so don't do much casting now.

Tightly wrap the outer diameter of the casting with a bicycle inner tube. really helps with resonance.

Using cutting fluid gives a better finish, increases cutter life, reduces heat build up and noise level.

Are those sodium silicate cores? For Iron, one wants some sugar to help the sand break down - that, or use “baked cores” which are cooked in a *core oven…* (This is why they were so common in the auto industry, I’ll bet) Secondly, did you add sea-coal? (Didn’t look like it.) Sea-coal helps with cast iron having a “better” surface finish. Finally, you might add a small amount of powdered charcoal or metallurgical coke (roasted coal) to your crucible to help reduce some of the “slag loss.”

FYI, Silica sand is VERY harmful if breathed in. It's small particle of glass, and once in your lungs it's there to stay.

The fact that he couldn't anticipate the sand paper sliding # 1 is wild! # 2 him actually thinking that removing the sheet of paper out from underneath it would fix the problem tends to make me think he is trolling lol. I mean seriously? It's gotta be a joke

@@fairweatherfoundry715 Don't sweat it. When family takes precedence over hobbies, you're doing it right. It's great that you have a community on youtube, and your projects are interesting, but kids and sleep are too important. I built The Artful Bodger's furnace too, designed with 3000F refractory to handle iron melts. It's a great design, simple and effective. That was 7 or 8 years ago, and I only have a couple of melts on it at this point - none in iron. I have a large pile of scrap of all kinds to melt and several shop projects on the drawing board that I want to get to (stirling engine experiments, vertical mill restoration, Gingery-ish shaper in iron, wood bandsaw/mill ala Falberg, 2x72" belt grinder, power hammer, and on and on) but haven't yet because of time. I rarely get in the shop for my hobbies - most shop time is related to the house and property maintenance. My kids are now 19 and 17 and I'm starting to see more time free up to hopefully get back to some hobby projects. But I wouldn't change the decisions to forego my hobbies to spend time helping with homework, coaching softball, basketball, baseball and attending all of their extra curricular stuff. We had kids late. You seem quite a bit younger than I was at that point. So my advice is to spend as much time with your kids as you can - especially while they are young. The hobbies will be there. And keep a design book for ideas...stuff you have thoughts on but have no time to work on at the moment.
