I totally agree with you that most people don't realize how much processing from a to z goes into a piece. Glad you made this episode. Working outside is good for you it will keep you agile. And yes, those black flies are awful at this time of year. I'm excited to see what kind of project will come out of these pieces. Designerepoxy Keep on turning.

Jim, thanks for the reminder of how much "down-n-dirty" work there is behind your gorgeous masterpieces. We do tend to forget that that part doesn't just "happen". It's not all fun and glamorous, is it? 😉 It makes me appreciate what you do all the more! After all, that behind-the-scenes work takes talent, too!

"Is this 300 bucks?" "You're right it's 300 bucks!" I love it!! And it's so true. I've been a graphic designer for 30 years and I know very well how folks can't understand why things cost what they do. It reminds me of the story of the man who painted roosters. He's commissioned for a rooster portrait and produces a beautiful one in just a few minutes. When he presents the bill for the painting, the client balks saying it only took you a few minutes to paint. He takes the client into his studio where the walls are covered with hundreds of portraits of roosters. "I was able to give you an excellent rooster painting only after doing all of these." Your video was the most enjoyable and educational hour I spent this week!! Thanks, Jim!!

It's really worth a try. Can genuinly advice to search for a woodturner in your region and take a beginner lesson. Don't worry too much about having two left hands or anything like that, crafts like these are more about having some patience and developing insight than about being handy.
In case you're worried about the dangers, then that's actually a good thing too, better be safe than sorry, so being aware that a lathe could be dangerous is a good thing. Always respect your tools. :)

Designer Epoxy. Good timing for this video. I am planning on starting the huge pile of logs I recovered after the tornado last May. I built a bowl blank shed to house all the blanks. Now all I have to do is remember where each piece came from. I promised the land owners a bowl for each of them as a memorial to the tree. Thanks again.

What I really like now is that since starting to use resin I'm not wasting wood and can use more of it. Love your channel. Designer Epoxy

My grandfather was a wood turner. He never used resin but would occasionally incorporate stained glass or gold paint into his work. Primarily all wood though.
He passed last year and I deeply regret not spending more time with him, asking more about his craft, talking to him about what he loved about it and why.
The videos showing the finished products are always lovely, but I want to say a big thank you for showing this part of the process Jim. I feel like it helped me understand a bit more about Grand (Grandad's nickname!) and his life and knowledge and passion. I am very grateful 💜

Still haven't been able to start turning yet, but I thoroughly enjoy woodworking as a hobby. I'm glad you touched upon all the work that goes into any project. I'm an electrician by trade and there are plenty of people who have no idea just how much time it takes 'behind the scenes' to get their job done. Permits, supply house, paperwork, etc... they only see the few hours you spend at their place but not the time doing everything else. I'm sure you've heard 'how can you justify $300 for a bowl when it only took a twenty minute video to make it?' Thanks for the vid...

Thank you for showing what all goes into it. I started dating a woodturner a couple months ago and your videos give me a better idea of what all he does.

Keep putting in videos that are teaching ones, like this is ... your craftsmanship is great but it's nice to see how and where to start ... and yes, I watched this a few times, pick up something new each time

Thank you for the video. I'm not actually a wood turner but I found it interesting to see all the hard work that goes on before the wood ever hits your lathe.

Your timing is perfect! Just working through a bunch of wood collected after a recent wind storm, keep up the great work, this is content that a lot of people need.
