Aspiring mycologist here! A neat fungus fact that was recently discovered is that mushrooms can sometimes control the rain! For a basic summary, by releasing billions of spores high into the air, they pass through clouds, interacting with so many water vapour particles at once that it causes a chain reaction where it begins to rain! There's a lot more science behind it than that, but scientists are trying to harness that ability so that we can start controlling rain! How cool would that be?
Wait this is really cool- I also heard there’s a type of mushroom that can break down plastic which is nutty. I feel like it could be insanely useful but they have really particular living conditions- Thank you for your fun fact :)
Mushrooms did wonders in my life. I could remember several years ago, I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Was actually diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend of mine recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.
Congrats on your recovery. Most persons never realizes psilocybin can be used as a miracle medication to save lives. Years back i wrote an entire essay about psychedelics. they saved you from death bud, lets be honest here.

I don't know much about these mushrooms. Really need a reliable source!! Can't wait to get them

Moral of the story: If you are starving, never eat a mushroom Eat flowers, pine buds, the soft bit of the bark of a tree, but do NOT eat a mushroom, because sometimes even if it looks like a good mushroom it may have fucked a bad mushroom and you are suddenly hostage in mushroom basement and the mushroom police won't find you.
Then you have those weird mushrooms who like to dress up in bright & bold frightening colours, but you get to know them & realize that they're name is Michael & they host potlucks every saturday with their neighbours. It turns out Michael died 6 months ago & this is Bichael, a mushroom who looks exactly like Michael but with a criminal record & completely different relatives.

My favorite fungi fact: there's a type of mold only found under Chernobyl that feeds off the radiated melted waste from the disaster, thus making it less radioactive. Also, that waste (melted remains of the reactor in the basement) goes by the name "The Elephant's Foot" (not a fungus) and to say it will kill you is an understatement, since it can give you a massively lethal dose of radiation poisoning.
Actually, the lethality of the Elephant’s foot has decreased since the meltdown. At the time of its discovery (9 months after the meltodown), it was indeed very lethal. In the 34 years since then, the lethality has decreased. It is still lethal with prolonged exposure, but it won’t kill you in a few seconds.
when you mentioned honey mushrooms being the biggest living thing on the planet, I thought about Pando, the tree forest that is all one connected tree, technically one organism, which I had heard was the biggest living thing. some googling and some math later, I learned that Pando weighs about 6500 metric tons. I still don't know which is bigger, they both have the same large number!
There have been reported colonies of other types of fungi that apparently have over 500 cubic acres in size! It's not a honey mushroom I don't think, but that is immensely big, like unfathomably big.
I love foraging, no matter if its mushrooms, plants, or nuts. Mushrooms are really cool! The amount of diversity is insane, from fly agaric that inspired the mushroom in mario, to the best and tasty morels, they are all super unique and beautiful in their own way. They are also one of my favorite things to practice drawing! When foraging, make sure to take in account if that mushroom, or plant has any poisonous like-alikes, even if its something your familiar with! Such as the potato, which is related to nightshade. Epel's books, like foraging in the mountain west, which covers plants, animals, nuts, and mushrooms!

I was having this constant and unbearable anxiety because of university stress. Not until I came across Ted Winston, a very intelligent mycologist, He saved my life honestly.
The ant killing fungus is actually called Cordyceps, and it does everything that GP says it does in the video. Sometimes, even other ants have to bring the "infected" ant away from the colony to prevent the cordyceps from spreading! It is my favorite fungus because it's so interesting.
There's also multiple varieties of it to infect various other insects and sometimes fungi. 600 currently known. So the ant isn't the only insect that has to worry about them.
Some cordyceps species evolve to infect certain species of insects! The girl with all the gifts is a great book that uses cordyceps zombies. I highly recommend reading it!

I honestly like the inky cap mushrooms, they're actually edible and perfectly healthy. Just don't eat them with alcohol it can most definitely give you a slow and very painful death.
NOT MAGPIE INKCAPS THO! Shaggys and commons are fine (no alcohol with commons for around three days afterward) BUT DONT EAT MAGPIE INKCAPS, not gonna be a fun time
The alcohol consumption rule is pretty safe when it come to ink caps, but in fact the only ink cap that has a bad reaction with alcohol is the micah cap Edit: Learn Your Land has a great video on the topic
@@Captain.Mystic I mean it's probably safer than the stinky green pool you found the mushrooms next to, given the choice of getting smashed or getting cholera I know which I'd take. Clean water is actually one of the most important points of any survival checklist but strong spirit alcohols are usually included in survival kits for a few reasons; they're natural disinfectants so useful for cleaning wounds, tools or even as part of your drinking water processing, they also keep better than plain water so if you can't source clean water old bottles of hard spirits will at least keep you happy while you die.
As an artist and someone whose brother grew mushrooms in our living room in a tin foil wrapped lookin box and is currently going to college to study mycology, this video appeals to me quite nicely.
I think the zombie fungus is so interesting! It’s cool that it’s somehow able to take control of the ants. There’s an Amphibia episode called children of the spore that has this concept and I’d recommend checking it out if you’re interested
ya know, i still think it’s crazy that an animation youtuber that i really enjoy not only did a video on mushrooms (something i’ve been interested in since i was literally 4 years old) but it was also sponsored by my singing monsters (a video game that i’ve played quite literally almost every day now, and only started playing a month or so before you released this video)
PSA: Do _not_ under any circumstance try to forage mushrooms without professional guidance. And by that I mean someone walking right there with you and helping you identify what you picked. Foraging books are not a substitute for expert opinion and everything you pick is potentially deadly.
I’ve heard many good things about psychedelics like LSD or psilocybin mushrooms and their health benefits, I also heard it helps one get through addiction and depression. I’m just wondering where I can get my hands on them cause I’ll love to give it a try. I’m passing through a state of terrible depression lately.
0:37 my heart skipped a beat when I heard this bloody hell lmao Being someone who makes videos related to the game and is a major part of the My Singing Monsters community, hearing a big youtuber get sponsored by them is really surreal
holy shit i never thought i'd be hyped for a sponsorship. msm is literally one of my fave mobile games, its so sweet and cute and wholesome and scrungly. and it's on a video about mycology, which i fucking adore so so much and wish other people understood. gingerpale, you have captured my heart and my smash of a like button.
Can you please continue these videos? I really like them. I have some ideas dea for a few videos! The history of school, music, why do we like sweetness, and the history of farms. You could also add the captions that are planed such as the "The History of Soda" video. I was waiting for a new video to come out and I checked how long ago this was posted and I realized it was a year ago and it was the most recent one.
As someone who's been following My Singing Monsters since it first came out, the fact that they sponsored you and you got into it made me so unreasonably happy omg-- MSM needs love!!! ^^
Never in my life would I have ever thought that my favorite game would ever sponsor someone, let alone Gingerpale, but I am very happy that it happened
Mushrooms are also like a neural network for most plant life on earth, as their mycelium connects to the roots of different plants, allowing those plants to communicate with each other. :) Speaking of ants and mushrooms, leaf cutter ants have formed a very special symbiotic relationship with a certain type of mushroom. The ants cultivate the mushroom in underground caves and use it as a food source. The mushroom has completely lost it's ability to spread on it's own, completely relying on the ants and the leaves they give it as fertilizer. Mushrooms are super cool! And the important part is actually underground, not the funny things we see above earth. When you harvest a mushroom, cut it a little bit above the base and it will grow back the next time it "blooms".
@@entitypolyhedron what i mean is in the situation it's a game or smth, people often just show brief clips of gameplay, or they somewhat oversimplify drawings of the game, whereas he actually drew proper things
A general fact about mushrooms, some like to be eaten and are actually colored so they’d be easier to spot but at the same time some of them are poisoness and easy to spot for exactly the opposite reason (but some how at the same time not). Basically, poisoness mushrooms can be appealing to some insects like snails while the very lovely yellow colored chantarelle is edible to us humans and very delightful. (Im no expert though, I remember this from a nature documentary about mushrooms when I was young).
Yup! I eat them decently often! But there is a mushroom that looks really similar but poisonous. Same colour, same size, same shape. But poisonous. The only way I can define it is "slightly" rippled. But yeah, be careful out there! Even if you think you know what you are eating, you might not!
I've actually had the chicken of the woods mushroom and surprisingly it does taste a lot like chicken. Also, it's cool to see you make a video about mushrooms because Mycology is one of my favorite studies.
Similar to the chicken of the woods mushroom there is also the oyster of the woods mushroom and elephant of the woods mushroom which is some of my favorites.
The zombie fungus is so existentially horrifying that I’ve repressed my knowledge of it, like, five times over the course of my life. But the world just keeps on forcing me to remember.
I like mushrooms, they are very cool Fun fact! Trees use the mushrooms mycelium to communicate. Example, if a tree is under attacks from let’s say ash dieback, the surrounding trees can pick up the distress signals from the under attack tree and produce more chemicals and stuff for fighting off the infection. It’s very cool
For anyone who was already playing my singing monsters before this video came out... The excitement I felt when a game I had been playing for years was appreciated.... it's a great game
i played it on my nook (barnes and noble's reading tablet lol) when i was like 13 ish. i wonder if i could still open the app now. i remember it actually being fun and the songs being good
I know someone pointed out zombie fungus, so I’m gonna talk about: Doctors tried to make medication to exclusively get rid of fungi in the body, namely blood/certain organs- but it didn’t work. No, the medicine that they were able to make ended up eating/breaking down your bodies cells, making it harmful to get rid of internal fungi. So they don’t sell it/prescribe it. Fungi has to be removed through alternative means (I think the main one is literally surgery/cutting it out OR fighting it off with help with steroids). There are certain diseases that also have to be removed this way (including cancer). There are certain medications to get rid of fungi in the nails, (most) layers of skin, butt hole, the uterus, ears, nose, mouth, and the eyes. (If more internal, be prepared to fight) So, yeah. There is medicine to get rid of most parasites and bacteria and to help build resistance to certain viruses, but not to get rid of mold in certain places. Be careful out there!
It's really interesting how fungal cells are so similar to mammal cells that a medicine to kill the former ends up killing the latter as well. I think I heard somewhere that some fungi are so similar to us biologically that eating them makes us sick because it triggers our body's anti-cannibalistic response.
i love how the comments are just half fun facts and neat things about mushrooms! people really love just learning about these funky little things and sharing this knowledge with others!!

My singing monsters is such a great og mobile game, bro. Glad to see they’re doing well enough to sponsor big deal UA-camrs like you!!! Edit: changed “get sponsored by” to “sponsor” (thanks @entity for the correction)
The question about which mushroom to eat ... mushrooms dont have glucose, therefore are not gonna to fill you up, they are eaten to improve your gut as it helps your body break things down, Bacically youd be better off tryna eat the tree.

The ant killing fungus is actually called Cordyceps, and it does everything that GP says it does in the video. Sometimes, even other ants have to bring the "infected" ant away from the colony to prevent the cordyceps from spreading! It is my favorite fungus because it's so interesting.
next we wait 69 years for it to be able to control humans
@@totoisayal5045 that is literally the plot of The Last Of Us. Apocalypse caused by mutated Cordyceps.
It's also edible
There's also multiple varieties of it to infect various other insects and sometimes fungi. 600 currently known. So the ant isn't the only insect that has to worry about them.
Some cordyceps species evolve to infect certain species of insects! The girl with all the gifts is a great book that uses cordyceps zombies. I highly recommend reading it!
The trips I've been having has really helped me a lot ,I finally feel in control of my emotions and my future an d things that used to be mundane to me now seems incredible and on top of that I'm way less driven by my ego and I have alot more empathy as well

I honestly like the inky cap mushrooms, they're actually edible and perfectly healthy. Just don't eat them with alcohol it can most definitely give you a slow and very painful death.
NOT MAGPIE INKCAPS THO! Shaggys and commons are fine (no alcohol with commons for around three days afterward) BUT DONT EAT MAGPIE INKCAPS, not gonna be a fun time
The alcohol consumption rule is pretty safe when it come to ink caps, but in fact the only ink cap that has a bad reaction with alcohol is the micah cap
Edit: Learn Your Land has a great video on the topic
Im not sure how ill find myself in a survival situation where im both completely out of food and at the same have enough rum to worry about this fact.
Shaggy mane/shaggy ink cap/lawyers wig aka coprinus comatus. I found one the other day for the first time ever!
As an artist and someone whose brother grew mushrooms in our living room in a tin foil wrapped lookin box and is currently going to college to study mycology, this video appeals to me quite nicely.

ya know, i still think it’s crazy that an animation youtuber that i really enjoy not only did a video on mushrooms (something i’ve been interested in since i was literally 4 years old) but it was also sponsored by my singing monsters (a video game that i’ve played quite literally almost every day now, and only started playing a month or so before you released this video)
It's good to know that every single mushroom's existence can be summed up in ~6 minutes of info. I bet mine would take at least 7
I'd probably take less than 2

Do _not_ under any circumstance try to forage mushrooms without professional guidance. And by that I mean someone walking right there with you and helping you identify what you picked.
Foraging books are not a substitute for expert opinion and everything you pick is potentially deadly.

Psychedelic mushrooms really healed me years back.
These are great healing compounds! When used in proper context.
Research has shown psilocybin to have potent to treat a range of psychiatric and behavioral disorders.

As a mushroom lover, I found this video very enjoyable 👍
My dad and I found a good load of two different types of chicken of the woods and a few chanterelles the other day. Very excited to cook em’ up!
Mushrooms are also like a neural network for most plant life on earth, as their mycelium connects to the roots of different plants, allowing those plants to communicate with each other. :)
Speaking of ants and mushrooms, leaf cutter ants have formed a very special symbiotic relationship with a certain type of mushroom.
1:08 do YOU know what island song that is??!!

Apparently chanterelles also have a distinct apricot-like odor
Don't forget that the ones that are hallucinogenic are technically poisonous, but it just fucks with the human brain rather than kill us
Amanita muscaria disagrees with this statement.
I never thought a person like you would make video like this
"I probably wouldn't eat the horribly thalick one" *crosses fingers*

To be fair, Cantorell is an obscure monster. Being on 1 not-that-notable island.
I know someone pointed out zombie fungus, so I’m gonna talk about:
Doctors tried to make medication to exclusively get rid of fungi in the body, namely blood/certain organs- but it didn’t work.
(If more internal, be prepared to fight)
So, yeah. There is medicine to get rid of most parasites and bacteria and to help build resistance to certain viruses, but not to get rid of mold in certain places. Be careful out there!
It's really interesting how fungal cells are so similar to mammal cells that a medicine to kill the former ends up killing the latter as well. I think I heard somewhere that some fungi are so similar to us biologically that eating them makes us sick because it triggers our body's anti-cannibalistic response.
idk what’s better, that you’re big enough to get sponsors or that msm is big enough to sponsor
