This isn't a review of the excellent Fujifilm X-T4 but a detailed look at whether the improved autofocus abilities over the X-T3 get close to the superb AF of the Sony and Canon mirrorless cameras.

I need this video more than any video ever made lol.
I thought you would like this 🤣 I should have worn one of your t-shirts whilst on camera! I’ve been watching your pain with the AF of the X-T4. I hope I haven’t solved too many of your problems as your struggles are too entertaining! 😂
All I want is a perfect auto focus
Camera Conspiracies yup :) the torment continues
This solved the lens for video af part of the problem and the answer is Fuji 16f1.4 however the other half of Kasey's problem is walking stabilization which in Fuji system again is body, lens, firmware and setting dependent. Hope @camera conspiracies test 16f1.4 with Philip sensitivity 0 af speed -5 shortly
Welcome aboard Fuji test pilot. Beware the assassins even if you can't autofocus on them they are there.
Try turning off face and eye tracking and setting the AF range limiter. There’s a custom setting. I have it mapped to a function button and can switch to that with it set at 0.6-1.9 for talking head stuff. Game changer. However tracking speeds and sensitivity info in your video still applies. Great info as always.
For any EF users out there I've been getting surprisingly good results with the Sigma 18-35 and Fringer EF - X Pro ii adapter!
I need to look into this Fringer
Indeed been seeing man
That’s interesting. I’ve got one EF adaptor got for Fuji but I couldn’t find it. Whoops. I think it’s the viltrox. Never heard of the Fringer. Would really like to see some little examples if possible :)
@@philipbloom fringer is the best. I wanna switch to fuji and keep my canon lenses.
@@kingsamvisuals Yes but I've tested the fringer pro ii on my xt3 with a canon 50mm 1.8. Didn't work, the Af was just hunting back and forth. Terrible. Tried the fringer adapter with a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 and my xt3 just freezed...though these tense are listed as compatible with the fringer pro ii it was a very bad experience. It seems really inconsistent
Thanks a lot! It’s so rare now to see someone who really understands what exactly must be done when testing hardware, and even more rare to see someone who spends so much time in actual tests. Bravo!
Thanks Philip for all the work you did in testing and putting this video together. I recently got an X-T4 and did my first video shoot with it yesterday, using manual focus only for a pretty much stationary 2-person interview. The results were great using the Eterna profile. But there will be times when I will need video autofocus and these tests will help a bunch. Much appreciated.
Cant get enough of Mr. Bloom. Just finishing up your MasterClass. When you are in the states would love to visit a workshop of yours. Blessings!
Thanks Philip. Really useful - I appreciate your patience and impartiality.
Philip. Congrats on all your videos. They are truly helpfull to all of us out there. Thanks to your review of fs100 vs f3 vs af100 is that i'm still using today my Sony F3 + Aja Ki pro mini. Thanks again for all your amazing work Philip. Best regards. Diego
This is a really good and unbiased presentation on the XT-4's AF performance! I use the X-T3 and found it to perform the same. The AF is good when it works, but it's just so unpredictable at times. I also think the variety of AF settings can become quite tiresome when trying to find the right settings to meet the shooting environment. I often refer it to being too fiddly when compared to my canon gear. Fuji needs to get some video lenses real fast if they pride these X cameras on their video features. Great work mate.
The quality of this video! Great work Mr. Bloom.
Fantastic content. I've been doing a lot of research for a good general use camera and at this point I think I might start off with a Canon or Sony for the better AF and give Fuji time to catch up with their AF technology. IMO Fuji seems to be the best stills camera largely due to their more naturual color science, manual camera controls, and excellent resolution and detail, but the inconsistent AF is holding them back from being a better contender for video as well.
Thank you for this. This video contains a lot of hard work that is tremendously valuable to people like me. I bought an X-T4 earlier this year and will refer to this video often before I purchase new lenses.
Great video, thank you for all the (often painful) effort!
My X-T4 is due to arrive tomorrow so this is very well timed too. Cheers
Great stuff Phillip.
Watching your video prompted me to figure out the AF settings I should be using. Well, I'm happy to say that after performing a few tests with my X-T3 (upgraded to have the same AF firmware as the X-T4), most of my old lenses, the 35 1.4, 60mm 2.4, and some newer options like the 16-80 f/4 are working quite predictably and beautifully! I haven't completed my tests (got too dark today) but according to my results, I think Fujifilm has managed to fix the AF with the firmware!
Bless you for those four frustrating hours! You've saved countless hours for many of us, myself included. Cheers!
So much work into this vid. Thank you !
This is so good. Been using the xt4 a lot lately and couldn’t agree more 👏
I was thinking about picking this up from you guys but was worried about this auto focus problem. Going to be doing a most video work but will also be taking plenty of photos as well. If I try to vlog on this using the 18-55mm 2.8 do you think I will run into the issue Philip has described in his video? Cheers
@@jzxc there's better if you're just vlogging. Take a hard look at the A7C or sony APS-C line
Brilliant video Phillip! Thank You for keeping me focused
For the most part I trust the focus on my X-T4 but there are still instances where I notice it jump to the background then back to me again. If only the A7 III and the X-T4 had a baby together...
They did..its called the nikon Z6ii
Thanks mate, appreciate the effort, I know it would have been tedious and time consuming, but should make people understand that AF on X-T4 is fairly much variable per lens, and we all need to experiment with it ourselves ... my XF50-140 is spot on with X-T4 AF
... my next lens I plan to add to the stable!
Thanks for the informative vid! ... had a notepad and pen, jotting down the settings. LOL! The 16-55mm f/2.8 is my go-to video workhorse, but the 16-80mm f/4 has been spending more time on the mount and need to find the time to see how it performs.
AF Range Limiter also helps a lot!
I should have made this video ages ago. Thanks for the time consuming work! Fuji Autofocus is super unpredictable. Just when you think you found a lens that works well it will then go and do weird stuff. The 18-55mm kit lens isn't bad. And the 16-50mm f2.8 wasn't bad either. Basically the same findings as you
@DAVID ENRIQUE THORNE VILCA For photos I think any modern camera is good enough. Depends on what you're shooting. Wildlife, birds, sports? Or just normal portraits, landscapes.
@DAVID ENRIQUE THORNE VILCA There is no perfect camera my man, I have been shooting with manual focus and even record with manual focus. Challenging, but when you get to used to it, then it would not be a problem, at all. Good gears dont make u a better photographer. Plus, Xt-4 is one of the best APS camera out there in the market right now. You wont be disappointed when you get it. Happy shooting man
Just seen your comment Lee! Sorry mate! Thanks! 🙂
InstaBlaster.
And this is why I started using Sony for my videos. A+ video af. Fujifilm for photos. Lol
Man like OGP. I see you dargy.
Omar be lurking lol.
This was bloody useful Philip. Thank you for making the effort and sharing it 🙏🏻 Do you know how the new 16-80 f4 performs also?
You make the best camera related video! I would go even as far as saying you make the best YT video EVER.
I still don’t understand how you don’t have more subs, Phil. Been a fan since 2008. Anyway, I was looking into getting the XT4 and the 16-55 f2.8 and when you mentioned a lens performing well before you even said the version, I was thinking “please be the 16-55 2.8... please be the 16-55 2.8... “ and then you said it. Big sigh of relief. This may be the new setup I go for, for the best all around photo/video - one lens setup. Seems like a ton of versatility for the minimalist setup.
such an educational and entertaining video! I recommend to watch the entire video.
Very interesting review. Actually I think the next step for Fuji in video terms could be designing new lenses for video performance.
This was super helpful! Thanks man!
Learning so much and you do this so well :)) I hope you will test out the 16-80mm too. Also, there was an update of the ibis to the xt4. I have installed the new firmware but not jet testet if the ibis is better. Just a hint, if you miss ideas for videos:) Thanks for this videos and effort you lay into it. Here you get facts and thats what i like.
I feel for you Philip. I got my XT4 in the first week of May. Smacked the 18-55 on, and it worked pretty well for a talking head shot. I kept waving a magazine in front of the camera too and it was focusing nicely. Lucky first try I guess
Does it still work great for talking head with the 18-55 kit? Thankyou
Thanks for making this video! I have an XPro2 and the 35mm f2 and 16-50 hunt in most scenarios. It also doesn’t have the granular tracking adjustments. Also have one of Voltrox adapters for my canon ef lenses but it barely works sometimes stills, forget video. I’m now on the fence between the XT4 and something canon for video. Really love the Fuji form factor
Thank's a lot for your great work. Your results are the same as mine. I've never tried the Viltrox. But I can recommend the Fujifilm 23/1.4.
Best regards, Alex
I don´t own a Fuji but it´s amazing video. Deep Testing, calm presentation, excellent sound. Thank you.
love the quality of your video's!!!
I came to the same conclusions as Philip Bloom before seeing this video. My 32mm f/2 WR lens is jumpy, and my 16-55mm f/2.8 lens works very well for video. I just always use my 16-55mm lens now. Thought it might be a setting or a firmware, but it seems like it's just the lens. Interesting. Building up my cinema rig this weekend, so I'll base it on the 16-55mm lens then I guess.
Philip, I think the work you have been doing in AF has been VERY important. The moment a persons minds strays from the story being told on camera to "God I hope that was in focus" your story runs the risk of being compromised. In todays smaller and smaller budgets where you are on your own, focus needs to be one less thing to worry about. -------- side thought, Panasonic needs to get on board and figure this out!! They have been loosing DSLR/DSLM video business to Sony and Canon over this very thing.
@DAVID ENRIQUE THORNE VILCA same questions
Thank you for pointing it out, haven't seen anyone mention about that focus hunting on video. This is the reason why I don't have confidence of using the xt4 for video with autofocus.
Well done - thank you!
Hey man you here I was watching your videos then came here 😂 and found you still here
Very nearly sold all my sony gear to swap to fuji but the af worried me. Thanks for making this you have totally reinforced my decision :)
Have you tried the video AF using the XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR lens? What are your impressions? A next video, perhaps?
Thank you for the explanation! It helped a lot,
Would you please include a list in the commentary with the setting per lens you tested and which settings are the best?
Thanks in advance!
I'm getting good video autofocus on the Viltrox 23mm F1.4 but not on the Viltrox 33mm F1.4 - both on the latest firmware. There was a MASSIVE difference upgrading the Viltrox firmware from 1.0.6 to 1.1.2.
great video, thank you for putting it together
Thanks for this - you have way more patience than me. Glad to see the 16mm 1.4 did well, that's a lovely lens.
Welcome, it’s my favourite of my lenses. I wish they had a longer lens of this quality with the same AF performance.
@@philipbloom There are very good Canon adapters for Fuji. I wonder how they might perform. I had a Canon 35mm lens on my XT3 for a while and liked that as it gave me stabilisation for video. I'm no expert on Canon lenses - but the Fringer Pro seemed great to me.
I almost feel your frustration. And thank you so much for this video. It is very helpful.
I think I would need to watch this video on several times. So helpful.!!
I have the same feelings about the autofocus on my XT4. The funny thing is, that the Sigma 18-35 with the Fringer adapter gives me the smoothest and most reliable autofocus on the XT4. It just racks quickly but calmly. It gives it that more polished Canon like feel. The Fuji lenses have so much breathing that they can be inconsistent for sure.
Someone else just said that. Very interesting. I should look into this. The Canon lenses certainly have smoother motors than almost all the Fuji lenses.
@@philipbloom Yes. But, important caveat. Many Canon and Sigma lenses don't perform as well adapted with the Fringer. The 18-35 just happens to be pretty darn spectacular in that application. Plus it just so happens to be a wonderful lens. A bit big, but great. Thx again for the wonderful video. I have the Viltrox lenses, and I see the exact same thing. Too snappy no matter what the speed settings you use. I find that no matter the speed settings on those, nothing changes in the Snap!
Have you tried Tamron 10-24 f/3.5-4.5 with Fringer adapter? It's even better than adapted Sigma 18-35 or native Fuji 10-24.
@@philipbloom Please do. I will wait that test. :) Thank you in advance.
Philip - I LOVE all the videos. Will you continue after the pandemic?
Thanks. I will of course still do some here but it will be less once I start back on the documentary shooting.
excellent analysis of the autofocus and its shortcomings ob the Fuji xt4. I am using the xt3 and don't trust it with a talking head situation, and I am not in a rush to switch to the xt4. I was wondering if you could analyse the judder/stutter of the fuji when doing panning, a smooth panning on a fluid head. The xt3 makes irregular panning movements, and it seems a problem with the sensor processing that continues with the xt4.
Liked your video very much. Would you consider doing a video about the most reliable APS-c camera and lense combo for video and stills in terms of AF for action / wildlife? ... and how to minimize rolling shutter and orange hue bias in the case of the Sony A6600, should that be your #1 pick?
Thanks, you cured my lust for the X-T4. Finally.
For every disease there is always a cure.
Fuji seems like a camera with good autofocus (unlike Panasonic) and stabilisation (unlike Sony), but both are semi-reliable. And in a lot of situations, when it's yes or no, you have to stick with manual focus and other means of stabilisation.
This is such a useful and great video. Would you ever consider to update this video in the future please Philip? Especially with the new updated 18mm, 23mm and 33mm LM lenses on the XT5/Xh2/Xh2s cameras? Thanks for the great resources man!
bump just in case you haven't seen this comment yet :)
Great Video @Philip Bloom but man i cant wait for the RAW GFX100, hopefully it is good but i know you will tell it like it is.
On the XS-10 and 18-55 kit lens. I find Tracking sensitivity at 0 and AF speed at +5 works most reliably.
Thanks for a great video. Very interesting.
The Viltrox 23mm 1.4 with latest firmware has smooth AF transitions now. Nothing like the jerky bokeh you were seeing. Seems they completely fixed it, and the focus is now smoother than any Fuji lens. Even the smoothest Fuji lenses in this test still look a little jerky if you watch the bokeh balls.
Does your Viltrox 23mm make clicking focusing noise and also aperture noise in autofocusing?
@@Avdarmaly External Mic fixes either of these issues
Now with the 18mm f1.4 release, I'm curious to know how well the linear motor in it does compared to the 16mm F1.4
Thank you for this video.
Thanks for sharing. I hope fujifilm will do something about the video AF. Really the speed and sensitivity in video mode should be standardized, with 0 being a good rack speed for film making.
I think we will get improvements where possible. I just don’t think they can do much with some of the lenses. It’s the same with some old Sony lenses, they are awful with AF as smoothness wasn’t something they put into them when making them.
I can’t wait to purchase the XT4! The only lens I’ll purchase is the 14mm. Maybe I’ll get a 50mm as well.
4:50 best test ever. (Lolipop my favorite cat!)
She’s brilliant :)
Your lighting is fantastic 🤙💪
thanks for the great effort!!
Another gem from the godfather! Still not convinced on moving on from the XT3.
Read a comment on Camera Conspiracy's page that said to tap focus on your face first, THEN turn on face detection so, in the chance that the X-T4 loses focus, it will revert to your original touch focus point. Haven't tested it all that much but it has worked well for me so far.
crispy bee yeah that’s not a thing. Not how face detection works. I mean yes you can do that but you are using a small focus point. There is no tracking involved here. It will still be distracted by brighter backgrounds and won’t help the motor issues which is what one of the biggest issues here is.
I need this video more than Camera Conspiracies because I have no guardian angel buying me cameras.. I need to get this decision right!
Right loll
Looking into to this to try and decide whether it's worth the extra time to shoot with my Canon FD and manual focus or use my 18-55 f2.8-4 and auto focus for an upcoming short. Since we have about four hours to shoot we wanna be fast. The results of the kit lens are what I've experienced with it too - it may be good enough for what we want.
Lovely colour in this video. Would you mind sharing the colour profile and settings you used Philip?
Love how you make your videos
Even if I don't use Fuji, I found this surprisingly entertaining.
Maybe I recognise my self battling the quirks of mechanics and software to control them.
If you use a Circular polariser or a variable ND filter how much does that effect the autofocus performance ?
And could that account for different performance "on different days", on same body / lens / setting combination ?
Great video! As a family camera shooting kids in motion and what not, would you say to give Fuji a miss?
This is really interesting I don't really do much video. I make a low effort kind of video journal thing but it's more of a private thing. I had no idea the video auto focus was so sketchy with this camera. I've had mine for a month now but I'm mostly a still shooter. When I do video I use my 16-55 so I guess that's why I never thought it had any problems, that and again it's mostly just talking head type stuff.
thanks for the video. What would you recommend - the 16-55 f2.8 or the 16mm f1.4? The intended use is vlogging.
Hello, in movie mode I've found if you have focus mode set to af-s and touchscreen focus set to af and start recording a video, you can touch the screen focusing without disengaging the af. The difference with af-c mode is in af-s mode you tap and the camera doesn't focus continuously with focus hunting. It only works when the camera is recording.
Yep but that doesn’t help with shallow depth of field and natural human movement sadly
@@philipbloom It helps me in certain situations with fairly static subjects where I can follow them taping the screen again.
thanks for the settings to use on my 16mm 1.4
Great video! Your efforts are highly appreciated! Your personality makes watching the video even better
This is why I love Fuji, Eterna alone makes this camera worth it but I love F-Log as well.
Lol, all he shows in this video is a lame autofocus of fuji and somehow u said why you love fuji? 🤣🤣
@@yoginwidhi6676 I did, what’s the problem with that?? Looking for a reason to hate on someone’s video & comments?
I love this video! Thanks for the content!! Also, you're not Christian Bale right? :P
Thanks for sharing Philip, that’s really helpful. And the other thing that make me really curious about is how did u record the screen of the Fuji camera with those symbols on display
Thanks. With an Atomos ninja v
Mr Bloom! You HAVE to try firmware 1.02. I find the tracking and focus changes with the 35 and 16mm 1.4 fuji lenses to be much much smoother and consistent with no jumpiness.
i already read about 1.04 did you try that?
Great vid mate, lots of work gone into that. Hey with the Eterna Simulation used was this everything at zero? looks great man👍
I did some colour correction with a exposure contrast and sometimes saturation but more to match the constantly changing light
@@philipbloom Thanks mate, Cheers👍
I'm just wondering if recording externally vs. internally actually affects anything since the results were not consistent even using the same lens. Could it have just been a little luck the internal takes came out better? Not sure why recording internally vs. externally would affect anything.
Any recommendations to mitigate the motor noise from the 16 f1.4? I find when shooting with an on camera shotgun mic the pick up of the motor noise is annoying, trying to rig it as far away from the lens as possible without taking the mic off camera.
Sad about this. Really hoped it would be good. Makes me glad about my decision though. I was at a crossroads half a year ago when I decided to go mirrorless, leaving Canon DSLR's. I was deciding on going to the full frame RF system, or going small and light APS-C with a Fuji system. Happy with the EOS R and it's reliable and natural AF, and super excited about the R5 & R6.
I just wish Canon could find a way to give us control over the settings for tracking. Only their cinema cameras do that. I covered these issues in my 50 minute epic AF video last month. Really hoping the R5 gets the control we need as the RF L lenses are SOOO fast and they need to be tamed.
@@philipbloom Yes hopefully they add control! I saw in the other video you mentioned that it was an issue with the processor. The R5 is getting the new Digic X so hopefully they can add AF tracking settings. I use 3 RF L-lenses. The 50 f1.2 is the worst performing at video AF especially wide open. The zooms work great. (24-70 & 70-200). I have not tried the 15-35 or 24-105 but suspect they might even be better given one is wider and the other has a smaller aperture.
Which Variable ND filter did you use in this video?
Hi Philip! Extremely thankful for your extensive test. I rent a 23mm F1.4 and had similar finding like yours. Sensitivity : 0 Speed : -1 is the best. It's crazy that if I just change the speed to 0 instead of -1, the lens go crazy with focus hunting like it's not sure, but once you set it to -1 for speed, it is then stable and smooth!
Besides, there is new firmware from Viltrox that seem to solve the problem with too snappy focus change, would you mind testing it and just let us know? Because I would like to get that viltrox 23mm f1.4 instead of Fuji 23mm F2. Thnks!
I have the same lens. It has driven me crazy because just love the Fujis color science. Everything looks good right out of the camera. Auto focus had me banging my head though because this camera checks every other box. I bought a Sony a6400 a few days ago and the auto focus is perfect and it takes a very nice looking pic/video but the fuji pic looks better but I am gonna start using the Sony for video stuff and just edit in the color I guess. I will save the Fuji for stills. What really sucks instead of fixing this camera Fuji decides to release a XT-5 which makes my XT-4 worth less and makes me have to decide if I am gonna trust them again and spend that kind of money with them.
Got any filming tips for #LifeInADay 2020? ⬇️
Great review, can thanks.
Hi, thank you so much for this setup tips.
I wonder do you have any advice for setting the focusing speed for GFX100 with 23, 45 and 110 lens? I just can't seems to get the correct feel.
I feel inspired to be a fujifilm videographer
Ah Phillip does your excellent analysis include the latest firmware update ? Thanks for all your public efforts to inform our choices.
David G Corbett no this was about before that update. I haven’t seen any difference since it last
Thorough and great as always Philip🙏🏻 You do speak very highly of the X-T4, how come you never spoke about the X-T3? Do you advice me to switch up?
Never liked the XT-3 much. The dreadful rolling shutter/ lack of ibis made handheld shooting a nightmare. The X-T4 fixes this.
Thank you Philip 🙏🏻
How wold you compare this autofocus especially in taking photos compared to the sony a6400? Is the Fuji able to keep up with the sony when shooting action in burst modes?
Hi. Can I record on X-T4 + Ninja V without limit 10bit 4: 2: 2 60 fps and no overheating? How performance of AF with Ninja?
I just want to point out that if you do not push the record button, the settings have no effect whatsoever. If you are recording through the HDMI only then you're in for some fun. At least this was the case with the X-H1 and X-T3. But even so, the lenses really do need updating. I only ever use the 16mm and the 18-55mm for video. Viltrox lenses do not accept or get affected by the settings at all so they're only good for when there's no need to rack focus or you can maintain a constant distance to what you're focusing on.
I just want to point out that you should watch my videos all the walk through. I explain this.
impresionante video felicidades, me puedes decir cuales objetivos son los mas confiables, no se ingles, gracias
The eterna profile is bloody brilliant for video
Yep!
