I love that you went to such extensive lengths to compare everything, this was such a wonderful video all around. I also love that where you filmed around 9:57 was where they shot Ted Lasso! Really helped me get a good idea of how these lenses look in familiar places.
It's utterly insanity how affordable good glass is these days. 10k for an entire set like that makes it worth it again to buy my own glass instead of renting. Very cool. Thank you for bringing attention to them and showing the lenses off.

DJI follow focus gives primes a new life. I am hoping to get a set of these. L mount is the way to go for the future, unless you insist on medium format.

Thank you kind sir, as usual, well done, although, I am torn, the images are close to stunning, but I go a step further, not only is the AF on the Siii a nice tool for these tired eyes, I find I am getting the product I need from the (heavyweight , old school) G 28135 cinema lens. I’m sure that would ruffle feathers someplace, but knowing a tool compensates.

Oh is that who it was? He looked familiar. I didn’t do any focus pulling, I just moved back and forth, much easier that way! It also depends on the autofocus. My Sony a1 AF is much smoother and more natural than my a7s iii. That looks jumpy on this sort of really close focus where every micro movement changes focus.

Fantastic video, and thank you for bringing up that they should be bought in PL. PL is the only choice for me because then I can shoot with my various cameras and my friend's cameras. Oh, the satisfaction! And EF isn't all that universal because of a few stragglers like film cameras, the F65, and various Arris - all cameras I have access to. Long live PL!!
The Canon 7d footage looked great! Goes to show we have no excuses these days if you're willing to put in the work and develop the skills as you have. Modern conveniences are certainly nice but cameras from close to 14 years ago till now (digital) can produce lovely images. On another note, is Panasonic the only camera company that allows the manual focus by wire system to act linearly and with adjustable throw?

77-82mm step up as my variable ND is 82mm. I am sure I explained the other part in the video. It's a 1-5 stop variable ND, then I put a 4 stop fixed ND over it which makes it 6-9.

@@uptonfilms95 yes and no. Whilst you can screw it in, not only do you have massive gaps for light leaks, the vignette is so heavy you end up with something like a 19mm. So no. You can’t use a screw on filter with the 14mm, not if you want it to be a 14mm.
The lenses are indeed clinical which is why I wish NISI would stop saying these lenses exhibit micro-contrast, which they absolutely don't. They have flat look to them reminiscent of Viltrox, Sigma and even Rokinon lenses.
100%. As opposed to the flat and super sharp sigma/volt rod look, I’m mostly talking about flatness with the Rokinons (many of their lenses not being super sharp).
Wow, Hi Phillip! :) I’ve watched tons of videos online of the NISI primes and none of them exhibit any of the micro-contrast rendering of vintages (cine or still) glass, as in for example Zeiss, Cooke, Leica. Compare the NISI’s to Contax primes, a Leica Q2, and so many other micro-contrast glass and the difference is immediately apparent. And if we want to compare Chinese glass, the SLR Magic APO series has much nicer rendering for example. I really like the design of these lenses but not their look. The framings in the video are nice though :)

You can use prime lenses for a dolly zoom, you need a zoom, either with a servo or geared to use a follow focus gear on it and you need to be able to change focus too! Your second question is impossible to answer for I hope obvious reasons! :)
Do you've any experience abt this lens how good behave on large theatrical projection? I'm so curious to know abt how this lenses works for theatrical cinema... if anyone knows there is any theatrical film shot in NiSi cine lenses please share the information with me.
I believe it’s because 55mm is to cover for the full 3:2 sensor and then some. 46mm covers the 16:9 but not necessarily using the very best of the glass on the wider lenses. 35mm all easily cover it. Same with my Sigma ART EF lenses. I use the 35mm upwards with great results on the GFX. The 24mm is fine too, just.
@@philipbloom That's still over 50mm. Even cinescope is like 48mm. Seems weird they wouldn't advertise them as having a wider circle when they cover perfectly. For the wider ones the premista mode should fix the vignette (not sure if the 100 has that though, the 100 II does)

I should have done some tests in stills mode on the GFX but by the time I thought of it I had already given them back. What’s really sad is the set that had I sent on to the next tester via UPS. They never reached him. I would love to have kept them, way better than their likely fate of being stolen. 😞

Doh.. too late.. :( These NiSi lenses aren't doing onion ring bokeh, I wonder if they are having their craftspeople hand-ground the lenses, I seem to recall that's what Panasonic once had to do to get rid of onion rings on the aspherical lenses within their LX100 compacts. Gerald Undone absolutely can report in a way that can make a Japanese lens engineer blush, I''ll hop over to check out some of his cine lenses reviews, now that you've mentioned it. If I ever have to do for-paid videos and it doesn't have to be full frame I reckon I'd just rent those Fuji MK's in E mount? I am surprised you don't use em much, is something fundamentally wrong with them (aside from having less Toneh cus they Super35? or being manual focus?) Philip would you ever dare to use Anamorphic lenses? Or would you balk at baking in such things and rather leave it to the guys/gals working in post production?
I’ve got some and have used them a bit. I just don’t love them. Terrible close focus and the cheaper ones have an ugly look and flares. I like spherical.
Philip, you’re always awesome but if I can warmly say that I’m missing what the benefits are when losing auto focus to using these lenses. Admittedly I’m a Muppet but I didn’t get this from the video. More importantly, is your automatic cat litter machine any good, and is it still working?

There's something ultimately satisfying nailing focus with nice cine lenses. These lenses look like a bargain.

Did the lighting conditions change during the tests with your mom? It seems there are some color shifts between lenses. Most notably on the 35mm.

I think the Sigma FP too? With my Sony Tamron lenses I can use their app to change how manual focus behaves, not just linear but focus distance.

No chance! Competing companies. Just screw one onto the front, I did for the London shots and many of the cat shots.

If I ever have to do for-paid videos and it doesn't have to be full frame I reckon I'd just rent those Fuji MK's in E mount? I am surprised you don't use em much, is something fundamentally wrong with them (aside from having less Toneh cus they Super35? or being manual focus?)
Philip would you ever dare to use Anamorphic lenses? Or would you balk at baking in such things and rather leave it to the guys/gals working in post production?
I’ve got some and have used them a bit. I just don’t love them. Terrible close focus and the cheaper ones have an ugly look and flares. I like spherical.

Philip, you’re always awesome but if I can warmly say that I’m missing what the benefits are when losing auto focus to using these lenses. Admittedly I’m a Muppet but I didn’t get this from the video. More importantly, is your automatic cat litter machine any good, and is it still working?
