The 2024 upload season is here and I've got so much on the way. 2023 was a busy year for filming but I wasn't able to get videos edited and out the door. 2024 will have much more focus on uploading. Thank y'all for always coming back to watch the videos!
I had just started kayaking when I first found your videos and have been wanting to go kayak camping ever since. I've almost got all my supplies together and am going for the first time this spring. Love your videos! (My husband even gifted me the camping coffee grinder and maker you use to take with me. I've been officially influenced.) Looking forward to more videos this year
Pretty cool float. That section of the Illinois River is dirtier as soon as it hits the Oklahoma border at st Francis. Until you get closer to ten killer. The best smallmouth fishing is between St Francis and close to tontitown. Huge smallies up there and tons of big crappie. Water is way clearer too. That’s where my grandpa used to run trap lines.
Back in action baby! Starting the year off strong and hoping to continue that streak every month for 2024. I think I can make it happen but it’ll be a tough schedule to keep!
Next time for sure! Maybe another trip is in order this spring. Editing the trip definitely made me want to go back and target SMB. Bigger SMB than what I was catching on the creeks! lol
You visited my backyard as a kid. I fished and camped all of the areas from the buffalo to the Oklahoma border. Every creek and river is special and now my Home waters are Guadalupe and Medina. Totally different switch! Good vid bud!
Oh wow! What a stunning and natural place. The Oklahoma ozarks have captured my heart for sure. Hill country is cool but quickly becoming overdeveloped which is sad
@@GatewoodBrownyeah I take a trip up there once or twice a year. I feel lucky being in San Antonio and having the hill country close because it reminds me in some ways of the water in the ozarks but it’s still just not the same. There is literally a spring or creek coming out of every holler. You should look into the kings River, white, spavinaw. My dad has a house on the elk river in Noel Missouri so many great places in that area of northwest Arkansas.
You and me both! Took some practice but this was basically my first time fly fishing so the technique greatly improved throughout the trip. I’ll say fly casting from an open river in a kayak is still easier than fishing from a bank! The false casting catches way less branches haha
Another great video! We did a day float on the Illinois on a stretch close to Tahlequah a couple years ago. The wind out there is no joke!! You can float the Illinois on the AR side too, pretty much year-round as it is spring-fed. But it's not quite your style. It's not as remote, lots more paddlers, and a couple of whitewater parks to portage. I think you'd like the lower Buffalo from Rush to the White River. 3-day float with NO takeouts, very remote, and world-class smallmouth fishing. Holler at me if you want to hit it up!
Oh cool! Yeah it’s a wide open place so plenty of natural wind tunnels lol. We want to do that section of the Buffalo for sure. Looks super remote with no access for a couple days. Sounds rad! I’d like to do the hailstones section too. We need to do that one day. I wish it was closer!
@@GatewoodBrown Hailstone would be fun too, but I either need a whitewater raft or skirted kayak for that. Gotta be ready to roll right after heavy rain too. But it looks wild! We were going to do Rush to White last Spring. But there were storms in the forecast that weekend. So we moved upstream where we could take out if the weather got too bad. Planning to try again this Spring for that section
I always enjoy your stuff, Gatewood. Such a beautiful river, even if the fishing sucked. Great weather for a nice float with good friends. Not sure I'll ever see that part of the country other than thru your eyes, but I sure do appreciate it! Cheers!
Thank you so much! Exactly luckily I’m stoked to just kayak and camp but the fishing component was a fun adventure. The current was strong enough to where it wasn’t a huge time sacrifice

Can't wait for your next adventure! Take care!
You're spot on John! Every river has its own character even if they're close together. The drought is tough in the Hill Country but east and OK/AR have been getting tons of precipitation. Part of the reason why so many of my videos have been arkansas based haha
We put in at Bevilport and paddled down to the park. That stretch has a good bit of motor boat traffic, so that stunk a bit. We focused on fishing more and caught a few bass but nothing major. I'm sure the fishing could be good at times. We were throwing crank baits on the few bass we caught. There's some pretty scenery and a variety of birds. nice, Man I really had trouble catching fish on the Buffalo in late September with the water low and clear. I would have thought Cole would do better though
Sorry to hear that, yeah we struggled but I think the water was just too high and cold. Next time! Cole went back two weeks later and hammered some football sized smallmouth. What a change!
Man we will catch those fish next time. It is almost astonishing 4 anglers couldn't even source a bite on 30 miles of river know for elite SMB fishing. Just glad I wasn't the problem! haha
Hey, THT! I recently bought the Big Agnes Rapide Long x Wide because my old air pad was just too narrow. I like having a bigger footprint air pad and it makes a surprising difference. I believe it is linked in my gear list
This was a good video man. Look like a lot of fun out there. Look like a very nice river too. I wouldn't mind doing some kayak camping on this river. Question how long did it take you to get there from your house? Thanks you for sharing this video brother. Looking forward to seeing your videos for 2024.
Mack is back! HOpe you have been well. Very nice weather aside from the wind, I'll take that over rain though. It is about an hour from Tulsa where we were staying but from houston it is a solid 8 hours I'd say.
@@GatewoodBrown thanks Gatewood. I have your backpack style from a few years ago. It has withstood the test of time and has been on many adventures. My friend got your 60L, the bright blue one.
Been looking at doing this same trip, what is law camping on the river. I was told by someone in oklahoma that you have to camp on a designated part of the river. I'm not saying their wrong but those gravel pits look like there well within the river banks.
You’re spot on in that OK law is not the best for river camping. You need to aim for public lands on the river and camp there. Once you touch ground in OK you’re on that land. Fortunately on this stretch of river there’s plenty of nature conservancy and public land access points
This is the Vaer meridian! I’ve got it linked in my gear list if you’re keen to check it out. I’m a big fan of diver watches and their navy watch was calling my name
Welcome to the crew my man! Ya know I’ve though about doing this via Google maps but I need to have a good way to describe access points AND conditions to look for. Understanding water levels are critical for a successful trip
@@Hilton369 thanks for dropping a recommendation! Flow rates can be such a big variable and I’d hate to send Soemone out there and their trip ends up being nothing like mine because of drought conditions or something haha
Oh no dude! Sadly the zipper backpack has been retired for good, BUT I’m working on a different design to replace it. I’d be even more stoked about the upcoming model as it’s a cool step forward. Thanks for even considering the gear though!
Great video. I really enjoy watching your videos but they are not long enough. Check out River Kings kayaking videos. Theirs are much longer than yours. I like watching kayaķing videos because they are so relaxing. I'm 79 and on my bucket list is to go kayaķing in Texas. There are some beautiful rivers in Texas. Thanks for sharing your adventures😊😊😊
I’ll take that as a complement! I may post a long version of this one too like I have for other kayak camping videos. Pete does a great job filming and including everything. He’s great! No better time to kayak Texas than this upcoming spring! Cheers to your adventurous spirit!
Thanks for the video. Have paddled the Buffalo many times but have never heard of the Illinois River. Will try to paddle it this spring instead of The Buffalo. Where did y’all put-in and take-out on this trip. What were the dates and water level/flow rate at the time of the video? Thanks again. Love your videos.
The buffalo is definitely deserving of its reputation but mixing it up every now and again can be very fun. We started at Edmonson and took out at City Park

I’ll have to give that equivalent a try on the fly. Cheers!
nice, Man I really had trouble catching fish on the Buffalo in late September with the water low and clear. I would have thought Cole would do better though
Sorry to hear that, yeah we struggled but I think the water was just too high and cold. Next time! Cole went back two weeks later and hammered some football sized smallmouth. What a change!
#*Adds to list*# Will we ever visit all the water we plan to? Cool vid, Gatewood.
Gosh probably not haha. You’ve definitely added some rivers to my list so glad to return the favor lol
Love the videos man. Living the dream. Too bad you didn't find any fish!
Man we will catch those fish next time. It is almost astonishing 4 anglers couldn't even source a bite on 30 miles of river know for elite SMB fishing. Just glad I wasn't the problem! haha
another great video! You guys were close to us with this video! :) We are out of Fort Smith! What time of the year was this?
Thank you so much! Fort smith has to have some of the best access to rivers of any town. Ouachita and ozarks are right there!
Great edit 👌
Thanks, Nathan!
Another great artistic video. Worth the wait. What is that air pad that allows you to sleep on those big stones? And that little air pump.?
Great Video Gatewood. Is that a new color for your 60L bag? Looks pretty cool.
It was the prototype color! Usually prototypes are done in black since they have that color material in stock. Thanks for the kind words Thomas!
@@GatewoodBrown thanks Gatewood. I have your backpack style from a few years ago. It has withstood the test of time and has been on many adventures. My friend got your 60L, the bright blue one.
Awesome shots 📸 would love to host you in Tennessee!
I've eyed some seriously beautiful places in TN recently...something in the Smokies would be rad!
Was that elephant rock you pass by? It’s a beautiful river. I just took a group of 8 down it last fall.
You nailed it! Elephant rock was a pretty cool feature to see. If it was warmer we would've gone for a swim!
I fish the Illinois River on the side of arkansas near siloam springs
Beautiful area near Siloam!
Fortunately on this stretch of river there’s plenty of nature conservancy and public land access points
finally
More on the way monthly!
What watch are you sportin there mr brown?
This is the Vaer meridian! I’ve got it linked in my gear list if you’re keen to check it out. I’m a big fan of diver watches and their navy watch was calling my name
Just subscribed. Could you add maps to show exactly where you are and where your going in future vids?
Welcome to the crew my man! Ya know I’ve though about doing this via Google maps but I need to have a good way to describe access points AND conditions to look for. Understanding water levels are critical for a successful trip
Understood. Thank you for the response!
@@Hilton369 thanks for dropping a recommendation! Flow rates can be such a big variable and I’d hate to send Soemone out there and their trip ends up being nothing like mine because of drought conditions or something haha
What were you put in and take out location?
I need you to bring back the zipper backpack brother, I waited too long 😭
Oh no dude! Sadly the zipper backpack has been retired for good, BUT I’m working on a different design to replace it. I’d be even more stoked about the upcoming model as it’s a cool step forward. Thanks for even considering the gear though!
Excellent video man, beautiful river. Greetings from Uruguay
Thank you Pablo! We were pleasantly surprised with the beauty as well. Cheers!
how is the water near you? still low
I'm in Houston so everything is rampaging right now. Just got 7 days of huge accumulations. Went for a paddle today and flew down the river!
Sometimes the bite is just off. Great spot tho!
That is so true. Mystified us but still had a blast camping. Cheers!
When was this video flimed
April 2023! But flows are very similar right now. Looks like we have som decently warm weather coming up
Adrenaline list keeps getting longer! 😅😮
Haha for sure! This one had some fun water despite there not really being rapids to speak of
What Kayak did you use?
This is the old town sportsman 120! Great for stability but heavy. Perfect for this trip though since we did some stand up fishing
🖐😎👍
Cheers canajian! Glad to upload again and have you along for the ride.
where's the close up espresso shot
Gosh I wish I had some on this trip! Had the gear but didn’t have time to brew
Small mouth are very hard to catch
We found that out the hard way lol
You social media jerks are hell bent on ruining local spots for likes. Thanks for making this river a bit more crowded and polluted buddy. Good job!
You couldn’t be more wrong. More people that know about a resource the more it’ll be protected
