I will say this is the soul of UA-cam. A person sharing their own adventure, not some hack monetizing someone else’s life (or death) by reading wikipedia articles about obscure things and editing videos taken by others, thank you for sharing!
Sunday morning coffee and an hour long video from mr shoalts. Awesome!
Fantastic adventure video! The obstacles you face with a calm demeanor is impressive! I am looking forward to Part II.
1:03:45 - I'm really fascinated by the ease with which Adam talks while being bitten by mosquitoes
Awesome video, can’t wait for part 2. I am James Bay Cree from Kashechewan. Albany river and Kenogami river is our highway for moose hunting, fishing, and harvesting by a freighter canoe, with all the rivers and creeks along the way. I’ve also paddled from Kabinakami river to Kashechewan James bay. Looking to do it again this summer before fall.
To do something like this takes incredible mental resolve. Hats off to you brother. AMAZING documentation of your expedition!
Taking a moment to enjoy an unripened cloudberry is tops in my opinion. You are true grit, determined, inspiring, educational story teller. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge, journey and passion with us all.
Some beautiful sunsets and views! I've got most of your books! You should post more videos of your amazing journeys! Maybe even gear reviews and/or gear lists. I know you're a busy person, but I really hope your UA-cam channel takes off. You deserve it!
Enjoyed your 10 Maps book and gifted it to my son in law. Would be interesting to see your rations and meals along the way.
I'm exhausted just watching you. I need to take a break
Great to see you in the wild after reading the book. Thanks Adam
You’re NUTS….I love it!
Hockey and Football players have nothing on you, no gun? Real survival of true adventure. Knee pads would seem obvious, luxury, no? Yet your educated instinct always kicked in and kept going like a man, I am proud that my Country that is in peril from humans and political (lack of) leadership is still alive and sort of well in the great North, we have all the wild beauty and resources in the world here, you Sir, exploited it in the Right way! Tipping my hat to you and thanking you for taking us along.
I wish you happy trails on many more solo adventures, since it is a true self-reliance adventure you have taken on that will forever enrich you has a man. Thanks for showing me places of my home that I never got to but only dreamed of, says a lot in this day and age. Merci Coureur des Bois! (your Historical French name).
I've been intrigued by your adventures since I saw your interviews with KC Happy Camper and a few other videos here and there. This morning I saw this video and I was thrilled to learn you have your own channel. Can't wait to watch part 2!
Thrilled for your next book and part 2!
Wow Adam! A man of knowledge and determination (not to mention filming and editing). Hats off to you. This is my first encounter with you channel which kept popping up on my feed. You earned a sub.
What a treat! Thank you for sharing another beautiful adventure! Always grateful. Thanks Adam!
Happy to see you have your own channel. Subscribed!
Love the adventure Adam, never stop exploring!
One time I thought a short cut through Cootes Paradise was a good idea, I fought hard to not sink to my death....seems like a cakewalk compared to your adventure. Your like a modern day voyageur. Love your adventures, keep it up.
This brought back memories of paddling the Albany starting at the Kabina and Kenogami Rivers back in 1977. We paddled all the way to Fort Albany on James Bay. Wonderful to see the Lowlands are still very wild. Looking forward to Part Ii!
Enjoyed your intervier with Jim Baird. Bought your book, "Alone against the North". Excellent read. Thanks for sharing your story in such a well written book. Cheers. Keep your paddle in the water.
Thank you!
ME AND THE WIFE NEED PART TWO ! ! !
This is fantastic!! Just brilliant!! You are an inspiration, thanks Dr. Shoalts.
Thank you!
Well done, thanks so much for the inspiration
Adam what a journey ! that was amazing, looking forward part two. Thank you sharing this.
So enjoyed learning about woodland items/food sources you "enjoy"! I was secretly moaning while watching your long portage through the "Canadian quick sand"! So enjoy your stories! I very much enjoyed "Beyond the trees" and am half way through "Where the falcon flies!" Your adventure are amazing! Stay safe!
Great video Adam. Looking forward to part 2 already!!
Hey Adam. Another fantastic adventure & video! Thanks for sharing these beautiful, rarely seen landscapes along with the wildlife and your foraging tips. Truly entertaining! Congrats on this accomplishment and hoping your plans for 2024 are going well. Cheers from Fonthill👏🏼👏🏼👍🏻
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
True persistence,very commendable
100% PURE LEGEND
Keep up the hard work, Adam. Thank you for sharing with us, your books and videos go a long way.
Thanks!
Such a wonderful adventure!!
Dude, your trips are friggin' hardcore!
I can't begin to imagine that challenging portage. Wow!
The beaver dams create little ponds, much easier for travel, imagine if it was just a creek.?
That was a fun video :) Subscribed for part 2
Outstanding Adam, to gain knowledge of all the useable plants in the Forest…such good information. And the very obvious outcome, healing from balsom fir sap!
The start of it looks awesome. I can't wait to watch it later. Thanks for sharing another video.
Hope you enjoy it!
Wow-that takes grit and dedication. I’m tired just watching you. Best of luck and stay safe
Love this! Absolutely hooked from start to finish!
Absolutely incredible! I'm in awe.
Awesome! Thanks for the ride✌
Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far. Hard core trippin’ for sure. I have fished much of that area but by fly-in fishing charters with Cochrane Air. Looking forward to part 2 😊
Thanks!
Awesome adventure! Can't wait for part 2.
Greetings from Finland! I`m a big fan of yours, I have read two books from you and just started to read ”history of canada in ten maps”. Great to see some video footage also!
Great as always Adam!
Amazing! Can't wait to watch!
Adam, as much as I like reading your books, I loved watching this so much.... This is no mean feat filming yourself...
Can't believe you stayed upright with a partially-swamped boat and no air bags!!
That's awesome! Can't wait till part 2!
Loved this! I can't wait for part 2!
That creek and the muskeg was like the Slough of Despond, much respect Adam. The floating bog made me think of the utility of wearing snow shoes across it lol. At well over 200 lbs I would probably have to make a pair for that crossing! Loon poop can be a freaky bottomless pit.
A place so inhospitable that not even Sasquatch can be found…. What an adventure though!
Beautiful
I love watching these outdoor videos. I would love to do this but im way to scared of sleeping in the forest with bears and wolves.
Fantastic video Adam. I love your work. Im always looking forward to your next inspiring adventure.
Thanks!
Can't wait to watch!
Really enjoyed this Adam!
Really cool. Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. Maybe you could add a map of where your travel took you.
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. 👍151
Epic adventure!
Very cool. Been in some hoary places in my past but with bugs like that? Nope. I'd have the screamin' meemies within a day.
I just started listening to your book alone against the North on audible. Heard about it from John Ontario of lost lakes. Didn't know you have a UA-cam channel.
Incredible, love your books Adam!
Thank you!
Excited to see you on UA-cam. Would love to see more of the wildlife analysis and notes, fauna and flora. And maybe better video quality? Thanks for the video! Love your books.
Thanks! The whole thing was filmed in full HD. If you select the settings in the lower corner, UA-cam lets you switch the resolution to as high as you want.
Just finished reading, "Alone Against the North". I couldn't put it down! It is a novel used for ELA30
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. That was my first book, and it's about this very landscape, the Hudson Bay Lowlands.
Amaazing!
Adam Shoalts ASMR kino for going to sleep thank you sir
This looks like a BBC documentary my friend! Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks! I'm not quite sure it's up to their standards, but I'm glad you think so!
Amazing journey. Admire your positive attitude, very inspiring! What camera equipment did you use?
Thanks! I have two cameras I pack: a GoPro and a Sony Handycam (mainly for wildlife filming).
I just came across you're channel, great adventure new sub here.... Cheers👍😎👍
I just finished your book, "A History of Canada in Ten Maps" so perfect timing for your voyage!!! Highly recommend everyone read it!!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the book!
@@adamshoalts loved it! I didn't know about many of these early explorers and didn't understand why Franklin was given two other voyages after his first.
My copy just showed up yesterday in the mail. Can't wait!
Thank you for filming your trip! I have read three of your books and enjoyed them immensely - and I just ordered: "Where the Falcon Flies". Watching the video footage of a trip of yours was particularly fascinating. Thank you for making the extra effort to capture your experiences on film. New subscriber here!
Thank you!
When I'm doing youtube full time, one trip I want to take is to float the entire Peace River. It's unfortunate I won't be on days off when you're in Hudson's Hope.
Legend!
You the man
your video is very good. great youtube❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow, you really should have a cape on your back, what a super human effort, so awesome……….
looks like a good time
Might just be me, but if I have a spruce and a cedar side by side, I'm grabbing cedar for tea every single time.
Great video!
Fantastic, Dr. Shoalts! Your calm determination in overcoming the rigors of traveling through the bush is inspiring. When was this trip in sequence to the trips in your books?
This was in 2021, the year before I did my Lake Erie to the Arctic journey described in the book Where the Falcon Flies.
Finally someone showing some poling skills
yeah interesting. Never heard of it till this. Looks like seriously hard, long work.
Great your videos!! I learned a LOT! Didn't know we could eat the Caribou moss ( lichen)
Rich in minerals and vitamins I'm sure!!
Do you never wear a drytop or drysuit?????
Thanks! No dry suit, too warm for that. I'd sweat too much.
@@adamshoalts yes for sure in summer, but spring and fall when the waters cold....ive never worn one, im 63...lol, but wondering if maybe i should...?... getting cautious in these later years!,,, i guess! lol.
It would be helpful if you included the names of the rivers & lakes once you left the Albany so we could follow your route. Thx for sharing your adventures👍
Oh wow ...Adam has a UA-cam channel! just watched part 1, very good1 I especially enjoy the educational bits about the plants, resins, etc! This looks to be based on the same journey as one of several of your books that I've read ...Alone Against The North" ?
Thanks! I haven't written anything about this particular trip, which was just a few years ago. Alone Against the North is also about the Hudson Bay Lowlands, though a different area, and those expeditions were earlier (between 2008 to 2013). I never intended to write a book or anything about this particular journey, as it was more just for personal interest that I did it...but I had this footage just sitting unused for the last few years, so I figured I'd upload it on here.
Almost looks like The Dead Marshes from LOTR.
Also, did you swear when you dipped your foot in the water during the logjams? (40:38) Haha not that I blame you, because that looked fun....
Lol thanks. No, I just said "argh."
Excellent Video! Love the remoteness. I'm off for my 1st 3 day canoe trip of the season in Whiteshell MB next weekend. Can't wait! Question: What are you doing with your food at night? I didn't see you hanging ... are you just trusting the barrels to keep the bears out?
Fantastic adventure! What is your paddle of choice for an expedition such as this?
This was in 2021, so at that time I was using mainly a wood paddle made of wild cherry, quite light, but strong and flexible, from Grey Owl paddles. However, since 2022 I've also been using a carbon-fibre, bent-shaft paddle from Ripple FX Paddles that I really love. But since it's ultra-light and carbon fibre, I still pack a wood paddle just for shallow water, or jabbing along banks upstream, etc. The other one might break if you did that with it.
Amazing route. I thought I have heard of the kenogami before, but upstream from the albany is there any form of a faint indigenous and/or canoe route, or is it just totally untracked. Oh and thanks for being about the first to put muskeg up on youtube. I probably learned that word before I was ten, but for some reason never sought out an available documentary that featured it. This is literally the first look I've had, now 40 years later. It does not look fun. And yet, there's something about this 'hudson bay lowlands'. It's bleak. And yet it has its beauty, as do all wilderness areas.
What a great video. Is that a Nova Craft Pal? I think I had the same one (16', Royalite) Man... I sold mine in 2015 to a guy on Kijiji and this made me realize how much I miss it.
Yes, it's a Nova Craft Prospector, 15 foot, TuffStuff.
Almost dumping three minutes in. That's how you grab and keep an audience's attention!
Holy! How long was that portage? And how did you know where your destination was? I expect your map directed you, but as you said, sometimes the maps are inaccurate. Getting your gear across it must have been an ordeal!
About 3 km and change, one way. I used a combination of printed topo map, GPS, and the sun and just lay of the land to navigate. It wasn't that difficult: if I just kept going the same direction more or less I knew I'd hit the lake. Slow and steady wins the race is what I always tell myself on those portages.
Very nice! Thank you for sharing! May I ask your drop off point? Just curious. I usually retrace while watching..also try to find your location while reading your books. Advanced geography lesson so to speak.
The bridge over the Kabinakagami River, about 30 km west of Hearst on the Trans-Canada.
@@adamshoalts Thanks for including that information. I've never been in that part of the world, but I am a big fan in my old age of exploration via Google Earth Pro. I found your turn north junction from the Albany River and the lake that you labeled "Weird Shaped Lake" on the second map sheet shown in the video. I'm a bigger fan of mountains than I am of taiga, muskeg and tundra; but a video such as I just watched could inspire me to try to duplicate the York Factory Express journey were I only twenty-five or thirty years younger! Kudos for your gumption!
Nice video! How was the fishing?
Beautiful journey sir. Will this turn into a book as well?
Thanks. No book on this journey, it was just something I did for my own interest sake, as I've long had a fascination with the Hudson Bay Lowlands (which my first book, Alone Against the North, is about). I am, however, working on a new book right now about a lost explorer.
49:29 I would have gone into panic attack!!!!
Loved the video, but I was a little disappointed that you didn't show more fish/fishing and zero brookies that I definitely expected :/
👍
And the beard starts to grow
