    I feel like a lot of people are now glorifying the Legacy of the Force books and Darth Caedus as "the sequels done right" when those had some serious issues, from authors not working together, to rushed developments and plot-induced stupidity. (Jacen was honestly to smart and knowledgeable a character to fall as easily and uncritically as he did) With feats being generally scaled back after the Vong books, despite everyone being stated to have grown in power, to the point where Alema Ra and Aurra Sing can pick fights with Luke and Caedus and get away from it. Luke and Leia/Han lying to each other over relatively minor political incidents, even at the start of the series and in general all the effects of the years of previous intense war, including the existential one against the Vong are extremely downplayed, so that we can have a new conflict again.

    What bothered me about the x-wing scene was that 1. it still worked, and 2. she jumped through hyperspace and did all this crazy navigation with no astromech.
    And how did kylo get to exogol in a stock empire era tie?

    • @tiredjediknight3110
      @tiredjediknight3110 4 роки тому +1

      The X wing working simply raises the question of why Luke chose to astral project an illusion of himself and die in the process instead of simply flying to Krait. Its poor storytelling in an attempt to tug at nostalgia.

    • @ariesstorm9577
      @ariesstorm9577 3 роки тому +1

      I thought Luke had used part of the wing from the X-Wing for the front door on his hut in TLJ. Chewie smashed it in. How did it fly, with a piece of the wing missing?
      Obviously Rey doesn’t need an astromech, there is literally nothing she can’t do in these movies it seems.

    • @ariesstorm9577
      @ariesstorm9577 3 роки тому

      As for Kylo’s TIE it probably got carried through hyperspace on a class 0.5 plot armour. It should have been one of the Royal Guard’s TIE interceptors (at least then it’s more easy to believe that their models were custom equipped with a hyperdrive). Or better still, have Kylo fly Vader’s TIE Advanced x1 to Exegol.

  • @TheMeditatingRaven

    The garbage fire the new trilogy has been has me pinning for Dark Forces (both the novels and the games) to be recanonized. I felt more investment in Kyle Katarn because of his character arc and struggle with his dark side. He was a maverick whom brushed against the typical Jedi Guardian archetype.
    Rey does not earn her power; it is handed to her on a silver platter. Kyle Katarn, Mara Jade, Grandmaster Luke, Lumiya, and even Krayt EARNED their power through time and diligence. Rey should have been incapable of almost every force feat she exhibits because of the physical and mental discipline they require.
    (Grunt) Rogue One and The Mandalorian are the only good properties from Disney at this point as far as I am concerned.

      @@DanieleMulas-up7np My brother actually enjoys the new trilogy and new EU, which I struggle to understand why. He shared with me a video, via Facebook, that was Freddie Prinze Jr. (the actor who played Kanan Jarrus in Rebels) actively cussing out all the fans who hated the plot holes and lore breaking of the Star Wars franchise under Disney. As you can imagine, he quickly lost any respect I had for him as an actor because, when the audience finds fault in the art, you do not attack them for doing so. At that point, you have gone from professional, to outright bully to audiences and critics alike.
      Yes, toxic fandoms exists in Star Wars, as they do in all franchises. This is, however, more a case of them undermining the rules and writing of the franchise, and then telling us we are wrong if we do not like it. When you take up a franchise, it is your responsibility to uphold the integrity of its rules and lore, as has been shown, otherwise you are not expanding it, or improving on past works; you are actively undermining it.

    • @DanieleMulas-up7np
      @DanieleMulas-up7np 4 роки тому

      @@TheMeditatingRaven As in new EU, you mean the new supplemental garbage like Phasma, Bloodline, the Marvel comics ? I agree, how the hell can you be invested in trivial, self-contained, inconsequential trash ? The Vader comics that everyone oh so praise are mediocre at best. Sith stealing crystals from Jedi and making them bleed ? Lord Momin a.k.a. discount Exar Kun/Vitiate ? Jocasta Nu going on a solo undercover mission ? WTF ????
      As for the Freddie Prinze Jr. drama, that only re-enforces how ASS BACKWARDS the clowns at Lucasfilms are. Ironically, he played the best character in Rebels, but then acts like an overly emotional bitch in real life. In order to enjoy a long standing franchise such as Star Wars, you NEED consistency and set internal logic. Otherwise, you might as well turn it into Bayformers.
      Seriously, the desperation they have as they still cling to the EU (naming Sith Trooper batallions after EU Sith Lords, referencing Tales Of The Jedi in Solo on the visual dictionary) while at the same time disregarding it, is just insulting....

    I enjoyed the movie for what it was but when you compare it to the expanded universe it pales in comparison. I've basically just accepted that from the films we got there are a few good elements like Kylo Ren but at the end of the day they are gonna be mediocre casual fan pleasers. Watching it with as low expectations as I had, I enjoyed it even though it was a nonsensical mess that goes against pre-established lore.

With the Chewie fake out, half of my mind was full of anger while the other half was deciding if this was worse than his death in Legends by having a moon yeeted into the planet he's on. And now Force Heal can now be used as a definitive cure for death...

    Its so great to finally get to hear Analysis's review of this film. As for my opinion of the film, it was terrible. The plot was rushing from one place to the next, forgettable characters, and having no road map for the end result. I will say however that it was great seeing Ian Mcdiarmid, even though he wasn't given much to do. Especially gratifying was the send off Leia was given, I honestly didn't think they could pull it off. Finally, Disney Star Wars at least tried to be original in this film, which I appreciate, even if they fail at it. As big a Star Wars fan as I am, I honestly feel that Kathleen Kennedy was really the real problem for this trilogy. Allowing J J Abrams to copy episode 4 beat for beat, allowing Ryan Johnson to make his own movie and ignore J J Abrams movie, and firing the original episode 9 director Colin Trevor. On top of that, she seems to be sexist towards men, fired multiple directors and seems to use the Star Wars movies to promote her own political ideologies by making them appear more appealing to girls then telling an actual story. I still can’t believe she approved of everything Ryan Johnson did, and the fact that they have most of this movie clean up his mess just shows how bad her leadership is. In fact I honestly believe that this trilogy was a waste of literally everyone’s time and DOES NOT NEED TO EXIST!!!!!! In fact if I could change one thing about Disney Star Wars it would be to not have them reset the EU, as those stories deserve to be told and this fanfiction trilogy needs to be forgotten. The only good thing this trilogy did was that it allowed people to see the Prequels in a better light, as they were under the guide of Lucas himself and had an idea of where they wanted to go. To those that enjoy the Disney trilogy, that’s great, and I’m happy you can find joy in something I can’t and I appreciate you letting me rant. :) Since you guys wrapped up this trilogy beautifully, do you know when you'll review both the Prequel and Original Trilogies? Really excited to hear your thoughts on the true saga.

      While I'm in love with The Last Jedi and believe Rian Johnson had no real fault in this, I agree with the rest of what you've said. Kennedy is the soul issue here. She's politically driven and seems to only care about her vision being promoted.
      P.S: Also Trevorrow's script just got leaked and it's loads better than this mess of a movie.

      Tijain Jyunichi I want to stress very very much that I’m just asking this out of pure 100% curiosity, but how come you believe that Rian Johnson isn’t at fault for the last Jedi? I’m only asking because according to Daisy Ridley Johnson didn’t keep any of episode 7 script and pretended like the last movie never happened effectively writing J J Abrams into a corner. Please believe me when I say I’m in no way trying to say that your wrong for enjoying the last Jedi after all everybody‘s opinion is different and the world would be boring if we were all the same. :)

      No, it's cool. I didn't word my intention correctly. Me saying Rian "had no real fault in this" I meant that he's not to blame AS MUCH as people keep claiming. He's an independent person and could have done things differently, I agree. But, the narrative going around is that Abrams had a roadmap & draft for all 3 movies and then Rian just came around and threw *everything* out. I have a hard time believing that because 1.) Johnson did answer and stay in line with what was set up, he just did it in a way people don't like (IMO). 2.) Why on Earth would Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm accept him doing that? I believe that some things would change but the whole damn thing? Either the material they did have planned wasn't concrete enough, they didn't even have a plan, or they didn't care.
      The interview with Ridely is worth looking at but I have a couple issues with it. One: she says she *thinks* she knows. And the other being that she's under contract. I doubt they'd allow her going around saying anything of the opposite. Every Johnson interview leading up to the filming of TLJ and many articles published around that time, say Johnson was given a blank slate and had no overarching path to follow. If Abrams did have something, it wasn't enforced or encouraged.

      TL;DR: I like the move because it invokes a sense of wonder and mystery in me that I felt when first watching the franchise. The Force is a big part of it because it's loose and undefined. It's something the characters don't simply control or use. The Force is almost a character in of its itself. The characters are the other part of it. TLJ is one giant revelation for each one. With Luke, he goes from falling from grace to a cranking depressed man who couldn't prevent the destruction of what he's worked for his entire life. But he comes back by sacrificing himself to save the fighters of the Resistance. He gives (should've given) them and the galaxy the hope they need to keep the fight. With Kylo he decides to reject the idealistic greatness that he wants to desperately achieve. He decides to carve his own path and rebuild the galaxy in his image. With Rey, she finally comes to terms with reality: that she's no one. Like Kylo she was so desperate for something more, that that's all she cared about. So when she finds out, she has to put aside and accept that it doesn't matter. She still has a role regardless of her lineage. And Finn finally realizes the importance of fighting for more than yourself and your friends. It's about fighting for what's right----even if you die trying.
      When it comes to The Last Jedi, I'd say it's one of the few movies in the franchise that truly made me feel like I was stepping into something new. And by new, I just mean that the things that happen in this movie captured my curiosity and wonder that I first felt when getting introduced to Star Wars. The biggest contributor to that is the Force.
      *The Force.* I love the Force in this movie! It one of the few that explores the side of it that few or anyone one really knows what's going on. Rey's cave experience, her and Kylo's Bonds, Luke's projection, etc. It all reminds me of the dread and mystery of Luke's cave scene and Anakin's dreams for example. Especially with the first two, the Force in this movie is surreal and wonderous. You (or at least I) don't know what's happening. But not in a bad way. I want to know more, investigate, and learn. This isn't me saying I hate or dislike the basic stuff we know about the Force (push, jump, telekinesis, etc.), but I like how this movie made it more than something that the Sith and Jedi use.
      Characters -
      *Luke.* I'll start with him since that seems to be the biggest issue people have. I just want to say that I think this is the best-case scenario with the setup in TFA. Abrams is the one who decided that Luke would be in seclusion. I've been grappling with how this would fit his character. If Luke was on Ahch-to because that he was hiding from Ren or Snoke that would've made him cowered. Much worse than what we got IMO. I see Luke's mistake much like I see nightmares for instance. What I mean by this, is that many people see Luke turning on his lightsaber after seeing the destruction as the intent to kill and JUST that. I think it's more complex. What I mean by nightmares is that no matter how calm, cool, and collected one is, everyone has instinctual reactions to distress and loss. The Force is a powerful thing. I don't think Luke's visions can be compared to watching something on TV. He's literally taping into the future and seeing all he built and loved destroyed. He's very much living the experience. Him turning on his lightsaber (much like he says) was a fleeting moment of weakness. Luke was having a nightmare and he woke up. The unfortunate part is that Kylo woke up to the sound of Luke's instinct and saw betrayal.
      IMO when you put the context of Luke's accomplishments with this, it's a crushing defeat for him. This is the Jedi who redeemed Darth Vader, the biggest bad in the galaxy, his father. The weight of the galaxy was on his sounders but he did it. And then he had to rebuild, fighting off the rest of the Empire and raising a better and wiser generation of Jedi. But the Kylo vision shows him failure and destruction. I've no doubt that Luke wanted to help and would've helped Kylo. This was just a prime example of "wrong place wrong time." Luke even says it in the movie about becoming a legend and the pressure of it all. But TLJ brings him back. When the entire Resistance is cornered on Crete he returns. Luke's decided that he's not going to let the past dictate him anymore, so he steps out to look Kylo in the eye. What's amazing is that he wins on all fronts. For one, he doesn't need to actually fight. He toys with Kylo like he's a raged filled child. Outsmarting him by being a Force Projection (which is badass). The other ways are that he gets the Resistance to escape and sparks the galaxy to fight again. The latter in particular **would've been** an excellent thing to continue in IX. We see those kids on Canto Bight reenacting the events of Crete. Luke's return has spread through the galaxy giving them all hope. All of this without killing anyone and sacrificing himself. It reminds me of when he threw away his lightsaber in RotJ. He chooses to reject violence and Sidious' manipultion. That is Luke to me.
      *Kylo.* He's actually my favorite character out of Sequels. Him as a villain is one of the best aspects for me. I love how he's an unhinged maniac. All the other villains in SW are these sophisticated, experienced, and wise characters. With the possible exception of Grievous, but you can't argue that he's not experienced or intelligent at least. And I'm not saying I dislike that, just it is nice to have this for once. Kylo's entire deal is wanting to live up to his families' names. A Skywalker and Solo in one. He's desperate to fulfill their greatness and match Vader. But in this movie after all the pain, trials, teachings, and disapproval from those around him he finally says: "fuck it, I'm going to make my own destiny, I'm going to be my own person." Which I way I love Snoke's death. Kylo thought he found someone who could help him achieve the greatness he's been searching for after Luke "betrayed" him. But Snoke has done nothing but criticize and make fun of him. If anything, he seems more interested in Rey. So when Kylo said he wants to kill it all "the Jedi, the Sith, all of it." It's the icing on the cake. He's finally seeing what's wrong with it all. The endless conflict. Which, again, *would've* been an excellent plot point for IX. A Kylo going on a full rampage throughout the galaxy with all the resources of the First Order.
      *Rey.* So admittedly, she is a mixed bag in this movie and overall. I love the concept of her character but don't like key decisions they take with her. I don't like how limited her training actually was for example. I won't go into much of that since It's pretty obvious. But her character in TLJ is something I truly enjoy. Rey is a naive and idealistic person who, like Kylo, is desperate to be a part of something. She wants to come from greatness. But when she finds out the truth, it's a crushing revelation for her character. She's nothing and has nothing. And I think this is why she works so well with, and against, Kylo. Her Bonds with him are great because she finds in him the only person who understands her emptiness and confusion. They both want greatness but both end up with different conclusions. Where Kylo wants to burn it all because he's lost faith, Rey says I still have a reason to fight.
      *Finn.* I'm probably an outlier even among fans when I say I like Canto Bight. An issue I have with it, however, is just how too Earth-like it feels. The costume design looks more like high-fashion than Star Wars. But anyway, Finn's character in this arc is pretty enjoyable to me. In TFA he goes from only caring about himself to caring about Rey. In the TLJ he goes from only caring about Himself and Rey to caring about the Resistance. The first words he says are literally "Where's Rey." And "rebel scum" after defeating Phasma is him accepting his place in the story, accepting that he's going to fight for a bigger cause. Which is what Rose and DJ represent. Those two opposing sides of his motivations and he rejects the self-serving DJ way because now he understands how it affects people. In the end, Finn was willing to sacrifice himself to save anyone. Something I do dislike: Rose saving him. Would've been a great end to a character arc and put some weight on the stakes.
      There are other things I like (the costumes, the cinematography, the music, set design, other character intricacies, etc.) but this is too long already. So these are the main stuff I enjoy.

    Maul Lockdown is a novel I’d love to hear the councils opinion on. It’s debatably the closest thing to an R rated Star Wars tale we’ve gotten. People and alien monsters being murdered in mass, gore to rival the hellraiser franchise, a disgusting telepathic worm monster, and brutal gladiator style deaths worthy of Hollywood. The book has Excellent fight scences, Maul is engaging as always, and a simple but well executed plot with fun B characters. This is a good book that shows that Apprentice Darth Maul had leadership and strategic skills despite his sith brainwashing . While I appreciate that Antoine doesn’t like the idea of the Wampa fight, there are three things I feel need to be addressed. 1. Maul is in the pinnacle of physical perfection ( his strength/reflexes/stamina/agility are Olympic level without the force) even without the force in combat, Maul still had his force enhanced senses and reflexes and has unique physical traits ( cranial horns and naturally higher pain tolerance.) that Luke lacked during his wampa fight in empire strikes back. 2. Even taking into account that the wampa ambushed Luke and Luke was hurt during the brief fight, Luke had little training and had spent three years learning by himself about the force. ( and receivingbasic combat training from the rebels of course )Maul has been training in combat literally since he was a toddler and was a master combatant with and without the force to a level few could match during his fight with a wampa.( this is literally a few weeks before Phantom menace) and 3. This wampa wasn’t in peak condition and was being controlled to attack even when it didn’t want to, so it was even less rational and couldn’t rely on its instincts like the species usually did. All this kept the two fights from being even remotely similar and wasn’t that unbelievable.( well , as much as a space odyssey about laser sword wielding wizards could be believable.) I hope the council enjoyed the novel and desperately want you to review this excellent book. And Master and apprentice with Quigon and Obi Wan released last year. And the novelization of STOR Star Wars Decieved. And TCW Season 7. I hope to hear the council’s thoughts on all of these and look forward to hearing more from the group.

    You guys are always the best. You’re saying what we’re all thinking in the theater. I’ll admit the fan service was shameful and that’s why the more basic part of me loved it, but as a whole the film is a mess. The pacing was super jarring. They tried for too much and a new story when it should be the conclusion.
    I’ll admit that Rey is a Mary Sue most of the time in comparison to Luke Skywalker at least, but there are both Luke and Anakin were also prodigies once they opened up to learning. I think the reason that Rey’s power has is so jarring is that she wasn’t trained by a “professional” as Leia is great but a diplomat at heart. And Rey’s powers are much flashier and “advanced” looking.
    I’ll never get over how you on target and hilarious you guys are.
    Thank you Greyjedi for bringing up how divided we’ve all become and advocating for temperance/respect.

    simply put while I think it was still a mess and not a lot of reason for it, if their had been an overarching plot and theme from the get go a lot of the issues would have been soothed out or at least a lot LESS worse then what we got.
    that was an issue so easily preventable that it offends me a lot more then all the other issues in world building dynamics, power scale issues, character development, and all the same old retreads from before.
    like that is just honest issues of them trying and failing at some things but succeeding at others.
    also you burned down the Expanded Universe for THIS? REALLY?
    I liked this one better then the last jedi at least.

    Dark Empire can be saved by one little tweak.
    The Palpatine clone was just a clone who thought he was the real deal.
    This travesty is unsalvageable.

    • @sonic8005
      @sonic8005 4 роки тому +1

      There was way more than one clone body in Dark Empire and it's continuations. Dialogue from Palpatine when meeting with Luke implies that the body that he had when he first met Luke was also a clone body if I recall correctly. Whatever the case may be though there was still the spiritual transference that Palpatine was very clearly doing throughout the storyline, so there's literally no need for the clone to be a completely separate character who just happens to know how to transfer his soul into new bodies when needed.
      Then again, Dark Empire featured a lot of stuff that was very questionable. The fact that nobody calls out that the World Devastators were very clearly not "more powerful than the Death Star" is something that people should have noticed when reading said comics.

      @@sonic8005
      Yes, I'm aware Palpatine was using essence transfer before and after Return of the Jedi. That doesn't mean one of his clones couldn't have gone rogue after his death.
      I think the fact that no one mentions the World Devastators when talking about superweapons is enough assume that they are not as powerful as the death stars.

    • @sonic8005
      @sonic8005 4 роки тому +1

      @@bluehero-96A rogue clone of Palpatine would have made an interesting antagonist though but Dark Empire literally demonstrated the transferring of Palpatine's spirit into more than one body through the comics. But the idea of a rogue clone of him in the way of C'Baoth would've been kinda cool for a separate story if you ask me.
      Yeah, it does seem they got ignored later on when mentioning the mass superweapons, but the Galaxy Gun from Dark Empire 2 does indeed take precedence and get mentioned in books taking place down the road.

      This entire sequal trilogy is a mess overall but if we're going to have essence transfer be a thing (even if its never actually explained in the film) then why wouldn't they have snoke be the one who can do it? We even had other snoke clones shown in the film. Why disregard an original villain who needed expanding upon and people were intrigued about and instead bring Palpatine back aside from a blatant attempt to pander in the vain hope people would forget about the last jedi. Its just shoddy damage control and the lack of any planning.

    Hey guys, I’m a big EU fan, hated TFA and TLJ (the worst SW film ever), but I actually ended up enjoying this film. To me, it makes good on all the wrongs committed by TLJ (when Luke’s character comes back as we know him and actually encourages Rey) and connects everything I didn’t like about TFA with a broader “full circle” type of idea. I’m already writing too much, there’s so much to say, but in conclusion I like Abrahm’s vision, but could do without Ryan Johnson.

    This movie was so bad and nonsensical that it breaks the canon and actively hurts the star wars legacy
    We threw out the expanded universe from a press release, can we as the fans just consider this disney star wars era non canon and move on?

    Okay so! I had about the lowest expectations for this film that i've ever had. Even so... i was hoping for at least some fun action? A pretty lightshow? I super agree with you guys about how awful the worldbuilding and thought process behind the final ship battle is. For me what's even bigger is even in terms of being a popcorn flick there was nothing to it! There's.... at the most like a minute of dogfighting? And once the galaxy fleet arrives, i don't think we see like a single capital ship engaged with a star destroyer. after that fleet gets there again at most we see like maybe twenty seconds of fighting. Like that was the worst, shortest space battle of the saga right? At least of anything i can remember and this is supposed to be the big final fight against the sith!
