Yes, his deck is huge. However, this is the best way to put up a roof deck in my opinion. His combining trusses portions for the support frames and bolting them. This is the way to do it. I see so many roof deck supports done with just vertical supports and not enough of them. I cringe when I see them. And DO NOT USE Self tapping screws like some people do. That will be a disaster. Look up "TRUSSES" and why you need to incorporate that into any frames. The torsional, vertical, diagonal and shear loads will be huge if you put up roof decks and put wood planks with stuff on them. You cannot fathom the load from the wind when in motion. You have to make it strong.

We thought of that but the order of the build dictated that we had to have the supports. Yeah, we will have to mask like crazy but in the end, we will be solid. Thanks for the comment!

I can cannulate, intubate, resuscitate, even turn up late. But I couldn't for the life of me weld. That's a skill I'll have to learn from the "UA-cam College of Fine Arts" et al.
Now you've got me thinking about putting a deck on ours. Wonder if a Jacuzzi and mini bar would stay up there on the roof? Hmmm.

Finally!!! Someone with a big deck!! I was planning on closer to a 30’ long deck on mine! But I mostly see small decks.
Ian Thompson I couldn't imagine not! I see us spending a lot of time up there in beautiful places. I actually took my inspiration from Ansel Adams. He had a deck on his old Land Rover(?) where he would take his pictures from. It blossomed from there.
guess the deck will allso keep the sun of the metal roof keeping the inside of the bus cooler , the wind resistance will be staggering though
if you make a smooth deck and add a spoiler in the front to guide most of the driving wind over the top of the deck in might reduce it some but those side supports will still make the wind twirl around them holding the bus back
of you ever want to see what the thing is doing when you're driving it wait untill a stormy day put the bus with its face into the wind and hold a bamboo stick with a 2 foot or so piece of knitting wool near things and see wat happens with the string
my guess is that about 2 feet after the spoiler in the front the string will be pulled in between the roof and the deck and will twirl like crazy
you can streamline things a little (test differences with pieces of cardboard and tape closing in the sides during the storm) and see if the string will flatten out along the sides , it will have an affect on the mpg if you can reduce the swirling
the stock schoolbus will probably have swirling near the bus windows around the wheels the mirrors and around the back too , its build like a brick and isnt aerodynamic at all but small improvements can make a difference in the long run

We generally put the bloopers right after the outro where we have the "Subscribe to our instargram and facebook" clip. Eventually we will do a whole bloopers video when we have a ton of footage. Thanks for the input. I like hearing your opinions on things. :)
is that square tubing steel or aluminum? 1/8" thick or thinner/thicker?

I'm sure you guys are going to add locking nylon bolts? So, those bolts don't fall off behind a finished wall. :)
Dan P we used lock washers on all of it. Gonna hit the nut with so construction adhesive got good measure before we cover everything for my peace of mind.
I d loctite and nylon bolt that. lol. that sheet metal channel is going to flex a fair bit and try to loosen that nut. I like your channel btw.
I can't, for the life of me figure out how those supports will hold a deck up. I'm dying to find out why the middle piece between the Y shape is taller. I'm sure there is a logical design at work It sure looks like you re-enforced the roof inside. Gonna be the best deck in all of Skoolieville.
I don't want to ruin it for you! Just know that a massive amount of planning went into this design and you won't be disappointed. The anticipation is killing us too!
my guess is that they will weld pieces of steel in between the supports over the Y pieces and use the longer bits as a stake pocket to put side rails intoo
mounting the supports on the side makes some sence even though it puts all the loads in shear on the bolts theres not a lot of railwater that can seep intoo the bus through holes there , they used rubber washers to seal around the holes
Where is the thermal bridge between the outside supports and the inside frame? Did I miss it?
None. There isn't any.
What is the size of the square tubing on the supports?

What did you put behind it to keep it from leaking? Butyl tape?
We used rubber backed washers to seal the hole.

Listen I got to know why you ripped both heaters as well as your defroster out? What are you going to replace it with. You do need heat while driving and defroster. Please make a show about it.

Why didn't you just go with three roof rails and build the deck on that? Your approach has way too many moving parts that can come loose over time.... Way too much metal up there!!!
