I started with Reina but fell in love with the EWGF and wave dash mechanic making others characters inherently more boring at default. It's a real curse because there aren't many characters that can wave dash and even less that can do EWGF. Now I am a sweaty kazuya main.
I didn't have a main when I started T8 because I played Lei in T7. After a couple of weeks I decided to try Feng because we're the same height and it just clicked
honestly I don't think yoshi players expected yoshi to be high tier in this game, this has never happened before, the best he's ever been is scraping mid tier before now
had the same problem. i just started with tekken 7 when they announced tekken 8. i mostly played lei wulong but he isnt there anymore :( out of the 4 characters that interested me back in tekken 7 only hwoarang remained. so the desicion was not that bad but a few other characters looked interesting and made it hard to truly choose my first main
I get into a crisis pretty much instantly for any game I get -"ok these guys look cool" -watch online guides, try them out in training -"just some quick online matches with ___" -if I like the character, I keep trying them, but I still get that feeling of the other characters I like -if I keep playing but I feel at odds, doubt sets in, I try another character, cycle repeats lol
It can be tough man, I totally get it. I had the same experience with Strive, it has ultimately held me back from getting past intermediate level play in that game. Good luck!
this has been me with pretty much every fighting game too… pretty much the only character i’ve played who really just “clicked” for me was Axl in Strive
It's important to note that, while starting, having just one character to focus on is important, there is nothing stopping you from picking leeroy as a side character later on. Every character will be better at teaching you some fundamentals and worse at teaching you others. After reaching a decent enough level where you can understand your character well and sorta understand the opponent, picking a secondary to teach you some of the other aspects of Tekken or just to have a bit fun can be a refreshing experience. TLDR: its a video game, pick shaheen, fuck jun.
This video did a good job of showing what it's like to have a character crisis, I've been stuck in one for a long time so it was super relatable. This video was also super entertaining, it deserves more views.
When trying to decide a character, I think about how cool they are and how smooth everything looks and feels to pull off. Paul, Dragunov, Lee, and Yoshi all have a good flow to them and their attacks feel impactful. Also, Death Fist > EWGF, but you didn’t hear that from me.
Personally my favourite character to play as in the whole franchise is Alisa Bosconovitch her attacks are fast and her moves are fun. but I do need to pick up tekken 8 currently replaying the whole series.
I like your criteria, I used to do this way back which got me playing Sol in GG, Law in Tekken, and Ryu in SF. Everything changed when I started to learn fighting games through Melty Blood. I get bodied hard by my friends who know how to air combo and to get up to par I need a character that doesn't need to air combo but still dish a lot of damage, so Kishima Kouma became the first character I truly mained. Since then, aside from looks I tend to go for grapplers, strikers, or striker/grappler hybrid. There's a few exceptions like Saki in Arcana Heart and Dan from SF4.
This is probably the most relatable video on this topic to me for T8 and we have rlly similar conceptions of all these characters. These were a few in my pool as well.
Im not going through a character crises but i help my friend a bit with it i really hope that this video helps him a little bit very nice video much love
I mained shaheen for two reasons in T7 1 He was easy 2 shaheen's gameplan is similiar to the character I want to main Lee After that I played Lee and never looked back but in T8 GOD DAMN DID THEY CHANGED MY HABIBI and it got me to play both also justice for dragunov mains/players who stuck with him in season 3 to 5 of T7 I hate fighting you in t8 but you get a pass (I played drag as my 3rd char in t7)
You can watch That Blasted Salami's overviews. He's in the middle of making a series for Tekken 8, but that's how I decided who I want to play for both Tekken 7 and it helps going into Tekken 8. He breaks down their appeal, gameplan, style, key tools/unique characteristics, changes from Tekken 7, and how difficult they are/can be.
Tekken 8 was my first fighting game and I picked Reina because she looked cool, when I dived into a bit more and saw she has all those stances and stuff I was just like "oh..." But that's not stopped me! She's been fun to learn :) And I win more games than my expected 0 so a win
I’ve never played a single second of Tekken but I’ve known for months that I love Devil Jin and don’t care if he’s the hardest in the game. I will prove that he can go pro
Very nice video. I have been also thinking about this same topic from actually yesterday. The first time I played Tekken was at comic con with the Tekken 8 demo. I liked all the characters but Claudio stood out to me for no odd reason. I went home and bought 7 eventually as 8 wasn't out yet. I played as him throughout my hours. But now that I am considering buying 8 and replay 7, I don't know what should I do. Stick with Claudio or learn others. This video was helpful in that aspect. Thanks...!
I had struggled to figure out my main on the first day I played Tekken 8. I played Heihachi and given plot, he was not in this game. So I thought "maybe I can go Feng" as I played him in past games and wasn't bad. Then I played Story Mode. I looked at Reina afterwards, saw her moves and some VERY familiar names with moves. She has been my main ever since. And I am genuinely enjoying learning more things about her playstyle
Where are the other options? Nina, Yoshimitsu, Kazuya, LILI, Lars, Alice,Feng, Victor. I've been playing for LILI for 7 years. Go into story mode and test the fighters, especially chapter 5.
I know I shouldn't let it but perception by others has really hampered how I approach the game. I started learning Tekken with 7 after seeing Rangchu compete and win with a low tier like Panda and learned bears. Getting rage quit on and sent hate mail was funny at first but after going through the entirety of T7 it's tiring. And now that Kuma is still low tier but stronger than he previously was, it does feel like it invalidates my accomplishes -- that I'm just getting by on character unfamiliarity. It's what made me stop playing him after I climbed to Mighty Ruler. Thought to use it as an opportunity to learn a character that excels in places the bears lack -- a smaller bodied character with better movement/side stepping that plays more aggressively. So far no one that I had interest in is really feeling how I want them to gameplay wise. I don't really care for high execution or just-frame inputs so I kinda avoid a small chunk of characters instinctually. Closest fit so far is Paul but even then I'm iffy on that
I always land on what feels smoother than the rest. Zato, Anji, and Baiken. With Tekken, I play Jin, Bryan, and am attempting to play Kazuya for the execution being really interesting
You mentioned that Jun seems nice, to the extent that she must be fighting out of obligation --whereas the other characters aren't. The story of Tekken is about a series of representatives from each county being obligated to fight in the King of Iron Fist Tournament. Everyone is being forced to fight by Kazuya...previously Heihachi.
Oh 100%. I initially had an entire section in this video dedicated to diving deeper into that, but decided to eliminate it because it kinda ruined the flow of the video. I think the big thing for me was mostly how they present their other reasonings. Like every round Leroy shows up practicing and talking about Weng chun, and Reina showing up and talking trash / wanting to continue Heihachi’s legacy were both more appealing than what Jun had going on.
My choice was easy, I just pick whoever has the most appealing moveset and is fun to play. Although I find tier lists interesting, that doesn't affect who I personally choose to play in the slightest. Also, how popular a character is doesn't matter. Having said that, Reina IS the reason I picked up Tekken 8. I don't regret my decision.
if perception matters to you, it's even more of a reason to pick reina. getting good with reina is a struggle. Leroy *Is* not great but he's also, well, piss easy. Reina has some mashy, cheesy stuff but at higher ranks running her gameplan on people is hard and her execution demands are high. As a result, most people that complain about Reina, are mostly people that don't understand how to counter her cheese. Reina is a very "respectable" character
I actually switched to main Asuka in 8, she was my alt in 6. I just couldn't get into Law this time around. I didn't play much of 7 so I don't know its because he changed or I changed but it just didn't feel the same.
insanely good video, your process is pretty close to my own. my only difference is i also add 1.) how much genderfuckery is involved, and 2.) are they voiced by jamieson price. it's worked in guilty gear, it's worked in gbfv, and it worked in tekken as well, and that's why i play leo and paul. also, generic statement about being surprised about subscriber count! keep it up :D
You seem to care a lot about how other playeres assume on who you are based on your main character. I play Baiken on Guilty Gear and at first I thought Baiken mains were horny but then I tried the character and found out it's very much my playstyle, so I'm sticking with her.
Look its so hard to pick a main im stuck between law and asuka but azucena seems fun and so does dragunov and most characters are strong which makes it harder
I chose Dragunov cause my favorite Spanish angry man is gone (Miguel) and I like cool Russian man. Started learning cool Russian man in tekken 7 a month before tekken 8 dropped. Then tekken 8 dropped And I’ve been receiving hate comments for like 2 months Learning the bears now cause bear is funny but my GOD, I get it! Dragunov is top tier leave me alone!
For me: 1.Azucena Easy to learn the game. But she's about to receive HEAVY nerfs, ending up as the games Noob Killer 2.Jun/Asuka Evasive playstyle=Cool and reminds me of Airbending. Also maining a bad character is smart bc when they get buffed? You are immediately better than those who need meta to win Yoshimitsu and Jin, both are fun. Yoshi is whacky and wont get boring too quickly. Reina. Fun but too popular. If she gets nerfed then she'll be easier for every one to counter
Damn as a novice myself i can definitely relate to this, picking a character between those 3 criteria. Anyhow as a newbie king main i wish you good luck learning

Play Lee Chaobla
@@alondjeckto his screams hurt my ears, so I'd rather not.
Lee is fun yea, but kinda mashy and high on evasion in this game @@alondjeckto
Same story. Been stuck on the mishimas ever since.
I didn't have a main when I started T8 because I played Lei in T7. After a couple of weeks I decided to try Feng because we're the same height and it just clicked
Thats such a dope way to pick a character haha
Other Characters:
Cool Ninjas, Assassins and Demons
Leroy: Has a dog.
Welp. Leroy it is.
Someones have doubts how their characters is perceived.
Someones is choosing Yoshi or Kuma and harvesting opponent tears.
honestly I don't think yoshi players expected yoshi to be high tier in this game, this has never happened before, the best he's ever been is scraping mid tier before now
As a Yoshi main, *it's not about winning, it's about sending a message*
had the same problem. i just started with tekken 7 when they announced tekken 8. i mostly played lei wulong but he isnt there anymore :( out of the 4 characters that interested me back in tekken 7 only hwoarang remained. so the desicion was not that bad but a few other characters looked interesting and made it hard to truly choose my first main
