You can be loyal to a character and make it work. Yes, it may take more work but nevertheless it can be done. Over the years, I used multiple characters on other tekken games but I find that Kuma works the most for me. Of course, sometime I would have an alt sometime later in which can help the main in some kind of way. The takeaway from this is to DO YOU and PUT IN WORK.
I find myself pretty happy with Jin and Devil Jin. I played both characters in T7 too. Jin has a complete toolkit that incentivises me to use everything, from pokes, electrics, wavedashing, counterhit fishing, throws, oki, etc. When I feel I’m lacking in certain aspects of my game, I go to devil jin (whom I find more enjoyable) in order to force me to focus on fundamentals more, which then carries over when I play Jin.
Tekken 8 is my first Tekken. I considered myself an Azucena main with all her gimmicks and tricks, but with my friend always pushing me to try King I gave it a go and am having a blast! I also tried out Lili, Lidia and Hwoarang. Now Brian and Xiaoyu are definitely next on my list. Also Yoshimitsu looks so damn fun. The searching and learning never stops!
@@aoi7910 Similar to akuma they wanted to make an extremely overpowered DLC character that everyone would try and they succeeded but in doing so they threw the hardcore player base under the bus and allowed such a disgusting character like akuma to be as good as he was especially in tournaments all you saw was akuma it was pretty sad also Leroy. So you can say yes the point of DLC is to sell DLC but it should not be at the expense of the player. You want the player to feel free to pick any character because every character should have tools suitable combat or counter everyone else. When you have characters like Leroy and akuma especially on release they're obviously better than everyone else so there's no point on picking anyone else. I love character variety especially in tournaments I hate seeing the same character over and over again or fighting the same character over and over again especially when they're just picking them because oh they're selling DLC so they're extremely powerful. Devil jin is a super cool character but the amount of effort you need to put in to do combos or get any life lead at all is extremely strenuous compared to let's say Paul or most likely heyachi on release. My big thing is if you're going to make a DLC character don't just make them overpowered to sell DLC try to make them fair and if they are overpowered please buff other characters like low tier people like Djin to give a reason to people to try other characters.
@@aoi7910 bit of a hypocrite though because I will be jumping on the heyachi bandwagon when he comes out. Cuz I know he's going to be strong on release. Not that I agree with this DLC practice of overpowered characters but I understand like you do they have to sell the DLC.
This man is breaking down the psychology of choice. Very deep thought provoking. I think why I love fighting games. Is everything you described. A fast pace game of chess. A battle of the minds and dexterity. The fire of Fighting. Enter the Tekken
I was a Raven main, Master Raven in T7. I found she has better tools than Raven in Tekken 8 especially the deletion of certain moves and the jab blind roll that now leaves you to get hit. I've dropped Raven @Battle Ruler, and played some Zafina. Dropped Zafina and now I think I'm going to main Bryan. Not for his damage output in the game or the same combos I constantly see from other players. But his movement diversity and his counterhit potential. I believe that's why I liked Raven in Tekken 8 was his mixups and forcing a player to go low, mid or high and break them. Well, Bryan has something similar with his movement as well. On top of counterhit. I find him to be more difficult. But I'm actually learning the frames with Bryan. Zafina made me learn to side step and get better defense. I believe Bryan is making me slow down apply defense better movement side stepping and looking out for opportunities to counterhit. I may have found my ace. And I can't wait to get even better with this character imo
doing my chores with this in the background. You are an amazing narrator, ideas are bright and clear, i absolutely love it! see ya in tekken gods+, when i conquer Lmg_Mob’s lars first place!!
Since I started playing Tekken back in 2019, I have played for at least 100 matches up to 1000 matches or more with: Law, Asuka, Alisa, Lee, Dragonuv, Kazuya, Devil Jin, Heihachi, Jin, Bryan, Claudio, Shaheen, Leroy, Armor King, Noctis, Leo, Kazumi, and Steve. In T7 I got up to the purple ranks. In T8 I have ben edging Tekken King. I am probably forgetting someone. I think character loyalty is taken to an absurd level in this game, and playing other characters helps to learn every match up far better. I am taking this video as an opportunity to flex on character loyalists.
Man is actually speaking to my soul. Ive been having a character crisis myself and i just wasnt having fun with claudio in t8. Glad to see its not just me.
Oh man Chad… I came for Tekken but when you mentioned GW1 and Mesmers. All the fond memories came back about GW1 and playing HA of GvG.. thanks for that. I miss that game (during its active days)
It's also interesting bc in my (way too long) Tekken "career" I have mained both Ling and Leo, and picked Drag up near the end of TTT2. And I have put myself through the exact exercise you described several times and ended up in very different places because of it. Heihachi is my favorite Tekken character, but the reason I don't main him is bc his tool kit doesn't value the things I do in a hunger games scenario. I've come to grips with the reality that to me it is not worth it to sacrifice consistency for power, so I will probably never main a character that is dependent on high execution. Super interesting and compelling.
I'm with you dawg. I value consistency over power and defence over offence - (That's just my conservative nature I guess) and its been hard to find a character who rewards that in this new aggressive Tekken 8 environment. But who knows, maybe NEW Heihachi might be a version that ticks your boxes.
@@ChadTheThirdUK i think he might since there are ways to get crazy offence with low risk (need to be in his warrior mode to do it) but you also get insane dmg for 12 frame and 13 frame punish. you also get ws 15f launcher. seems like a modern version of hei for sure and i think its almost character breaking
Hey Chad, really loved this video. I must say that, when you talked about how Leo is often glossed over by other streamers i really felt it. For the same reason, if it's not a bother, i would love to hear what's your opinion on Raven.
I don't know much about Raven myself, but when I've studied him a bit more I'll get back to you. I actually want to cover ALL of the less-common character in the game. They need more love.
I've begun playing Leo recently, and your video was really interesting. Thanks for talking about this subject. I feel like I now have a better understanding about Leo, and where Leo is compared to other characters 👍 The tool box part is great ! The visual presentation was also very well made.
one of the best tekken videos i ever watched. after 250 hours of t8 ive hit a character crisis in mighty ruler and i think i might try xiaoyu after this video. i would love if more people took the toolkbox approach to analysing the characters
I ate a big ego dip when I switched from Jin /Devil Jin to Nina. I’ve always played the Jins because I liked him as a character, I used to revel winning the mirror matches. However, as I’ve started actually playing Tekken less casually, I realized that I appreciate Nina’s Strength in Neutral because I’m not good at the longer combos yet that I need to do with Devil Jin. I played Devil Jin in the first place because I felt like Jin lost depth. In like a few days, I made it to Purple Ranks with Nina when I was stuck at red before. I went back to try and play them (I got destroyed and realized that I prefer Nina for sure lol). Crazy how a character I overlooked for over a decade is now my preference.
Quite as it’s kept learning tekken outside of the game is just as fun. People like yourself, tricky and wisdom seeker have mixed psychology and tekken tech so well. Big up you 3 fr! 🎉
Ive played Feng, Eddy, Lili, and im about to pick up Claudio. So far nobody has resonated with me like Feng but Tekken 8 particularly is too fun to jusy play one character imo. Far as the Tekken Prowess situation and blue rank 1 and 2.0s, IMAGINE if you have a brother on your profile that reaches Tekken King and you still scrubbing in purple ranks? My road has be BRUTAL just because my brother REACHED Tekken King on my profile. It wasn't even MY hard work. Lol. I thought about quitting several times but im not a bitch. Now im back at Kishin where i was before Lidia dropped, and im going to catch where my brother is soon. Funny thing is, my bro hasn't played since he reached Tekken King. 😂
I feel like in the future there's going to be schools with teachers like him very in-depth into the tekken ways. Multiple choice of frame data questions how minus or plus is this move on block.😂
Note: Leo's d/f+2 is -13 on block normally. It's only -12 if the second active frame connects. Doesn't totally changed your analysis of the move, but it does meant that it is a bit more risky than say, Dragunov's d/f+2 (which _is_ -12 on block) in specific matchups
This is incredible! You have a knack for painting an overall picture of what a character is looking for, plus backing it up with intricate details of their pros and cons! [Balanced, like Leo!] Would you consider making a video that provides a short / general picture of EVERY character? No one I have found really describes the character's as eloquently as you. This might be asking too much, but this video has been the most informative in terms of understanding both different styles of play AND which characters lean towards them. This is my first Tekken. So this video hits perfectly as I have one main character (my 1st choice) while I dance around other characters, but feel trapped in character loyalty to stick to my first choice. A video that describes each character in a concise manner like you have done here, would be legendary. Keep up the awesome work!
I think kazuyas df2 counts as a defensive crutch of sorts. Part of a good offense is staying safe and non steppable while doing it. And kaz has one of the best homing moves in df2 and ws3
As soon as you said “if you want a rocket launcher - you should pick Kazuya” - I knew I was never wrong picking him for just cool design. This guy slaps, and if he dont - I have to lab more - and this is what I like about this character. Breaking my fingers trying to do ewgf on dpad is what i thrive for. But! I must stay that I should really try other characters to understand tekken better, thanks for that note!
Genuinely one of the best tekken videos and advice in general I've ever seen in this community. This is the first video of yours I've ever come across and I look forward to more :))
My main is not here yet (Lei) I'm just practicing with others and enjoying the game until hes here and once he is all y'all muthafuckas better watch out!
I got recommended this video as a red rank jack8 with about 30 hours game time total. You talked about trying to play a character for a couple weeks, but it’s fun seeing this perspective when those couple weeks are my entire experience. Super interesting and thanks for explaining a lot of these concepts (as well as how xiaoyu works lmao). I love jack but maybe I gotta experiment with a character that has a good sidestep game
Walked into this knowing I made life harder by picking Leo over Jin or Feng. Watched a 90 min video that reminded me of my foolish choice. Walked away planning to change absolutely nothing. Erwischt.
Honestly i am aware my character doesn't fit my style but they are the sole reason am so dedicated to the game so much, so if i change then i will not be as motivated as with them but at the same time its really difficult to adjust to your character's style when its just not how you play.
@@TurkiVinsmokeYou basically just described Lili so maybe try her out? In additon to good keep out and punishment she also has the best sidestep in the game which is another very strong defensive tool. Also in terms of fighting style Lili is a little similar to Hwoarang since she also uses a lot of kicks.
I’m really glad your video appeared in my suggestions. 1 hour and a half video that just flew by with your insightful analysis and funny delivery to boot. Imma definitely subscribe for more! I’ve personally recently demoted to “blue ranks 2.0” after getting Tekken King with Lidia and the part about 200k prowess matchmaking making you face players who will expose your character’s weaknesses is so damn true. I’ve never had to worry about Lidia’s horrendously linear moveset until then because most of my opponents were playing 2D Tekken until now 😂 It makes you come to terms with your character’s strengths and weaknesses. Is it worth it for me to deal with and work around Lidia having arguably the worst low pokes and one of the most linear moveset in the entire roster on top of a fake af stance game that relies entirely on mental frames or specific callouts BUT I also get the most explosive snowballing no execution required mixup blender when my heat is active and got access to Heaven and Earth stance. Following your “toolbox” comparison helps frame what I’m working with in regards to my main’s kit so that I can ask myself “is this what I want to work with on the long term with this specific character?” “is this the type of gameplan and win conditions I wanna commit to to get Ws with this character?”
First time I’ve actually gotten into tekken with tekken 8 and I’m struggling a lot with Kazuya but at the same time this is the most fun I’ve had on a fighting game
This was actually really insightful. Im brand new to Tekken and Paul was my favorite character at the start. Although at first I wanted to learn Raven or Heihachi based on the gameplay I watched in Tekken 7.
The part about tekken prowess matchmaking and hitting tekken king is so ungodly dead on. i did it and immediately got dumpstered back down to purple within 24 hours. Caused me to drop Paul due to the mental boom that happened and i havent touched him since. I dont even have a character in Blue ranks anymore lol. Also your point about ranked not being a dead on accurate representation of skill but a decent indicator was EXACTLY how i felt too. Im only a little bit into this video and it's like you're reading my mind word for word. I'll keep chugging along and edit after i finish. So far really great stuff!!
I haven’t really touched Tekken 8 since about a month and a half after launch but this video is so entertaining and genuinely informing I think I might try picking it up again soon
I used to be a Lee main and realized I was playing him aggressive when he is a defensive character and I was getting steam rolled. I switched to Bryan and I have been blowing through ranks. I do bounce around and play multiple characters though but he's my favorite
Damn, that chasam stuff you talked about at the start is so real. Tekken 8 is my first tekken so i was pretty excited to hit bushin. I dropped down to battle ruler bot long after but thought it wasn't a huge deal. I'm now having a hard time climbing out of Tenryu as a lot of the people I play against are somewhere in blue but are on secondaries. It has definitely tilted me a bit to get stuck in red after making the climb to blue
It would also be SO cool if you could put together a sort of a character stat sheet (like those hexagons that fill in ykyk like pokemon or a mmo or something) for the characters and how they rank as far as those 6 categories. would make figuring out playstyles of characters extremely easy!
yeah learning new characters give you a wider perspective and knowledge of the game. I have mostly been playing Reina since launch. and since its my first Tekken game it was a lot to learn. I'm only at purple ranks currently right now. but I felt really hard stuck at mighty ruler. I then decided to try and play Alissa, yeah yeah she "plays herself" but it gave me a much better perspective on lows and sidestepping. Now even though Reina's lows aren't great I am using them more just to create pressure. and I am staring to sidestep certain moves/strings to open my opponent up and now I'm getting close to blue ranks. Not to mention learning a new character is fun and helps reset your frustration with the game.
Great video! First time Tekken player starting from 8 (played a little bit of T5 or T6 for the PSP, and a little of T7). Started with Lars because I had a slight bit of experience from the PSP games but found myself just pressing whatever and not really understanding what I was doing. I could do one or two good combos, but found myself just fishing for his orbital/launcher rather than poking and punishing which kind of got me stuck in... Warrior rank. Got my ass handed to me by an assailant rank Kazuya who absolutely obliterated me 6-0 which kind of got me interested in the character. Watched some of Keisuke's run in CEO, decided to try out his combo challenges and never looked back. And it was quite rough going from Lars to Kazuya. I still hadn't adapted to using the d-pad exclusively (Xbox One Controller) and was switching between the stick and the pad. Learning cd+ moves, the unorthodox inputs (compared to Lars) and playing in a completely different style took a while to get used too. I had the hardest time even landing simple moves since he has a good bit of negative frame moves on block and with how little of a repertoire I had of his moves, I got my ass kicked so much. However, I'll definitely say it has made me improve in Tekken and fighting games as a whole. I don't think I'll be switching up my character anytime soon, but I do have an interest in dabbling with Xiaoyu just because she looks like fun to play. It'd be fun one day to spar with you, but I have a long way to go haha. Cheers, and good day!
Not as long as you think homie! So cool to hear you switch from Lars to Kazuya (They are SOO different!!) but yeah, now you have experience of TWO very different styles of Tekken which makes you better over all. Then again, do you know what you get when you Mix Lars and Kazuya? Reina 👀
I clicked on the video because it was popping up in my feed all day yesterday, but after a couple minutes I paused and thought "alright let me get some tea".
A small example I can share in relation to this video. I'm not new to fighting games but 8 is my first Tekken and I play King. I get to Mighty Ruler and decide to try Kazuya after some time of being hard stuck. I unsurpisingly get washed because Kazuya is hard af to play, BUT he has a heavy emphasis on sidestep electric which I did learn in this time. (Kinda.) I go back to King after rage quitting Kazuya with this new sidestep knowlege. I get to Fujin with ease in a like 2 days and am now hard stuck there. EZ I will get to max rank eventually. Also this guy is funny af 😂
I picked Dragunov because people were complaining about him on the internet and it's been a great ride. I feel like the character is a perfect fit for me :)
@@volktol4432 in MTG I like to play Control so I can watch the light die in the eyes of my opponents, and I feel it's similar to Tekken with Drag. I get to suffocate my opponent with plus frame moves and throws on getup. Nothing more satisfying than hitting wr2 three times in a row on an opponent trying to get up 😊
I prefer power, freedom of movement and myriad of moves for any situation. Also being able to skip neutral, evasion, stepping on people, good punishment, ability to force mixup after mixup after mixup. Wall carry. Unbreakable grabs. Parries. So I play Reina
this video is awesome! do you think you can make more toolbox style videos of other characters? that would be super helpful to a lot of people including me

Over the years, I used multiple characters on other tekken games but I find that Kuma works the most for me. Of course, sometime I would have an alt sometime later in which can help the main in some kind of way. The takeaway from this is to DO YOU and PUT IN WORK.
0:15 my bad sir i’ll throw it out immediately.
You are right, that’s why I am waiting for heihachi
This is a fire video for all levels of play tbh. Easily rewatchable due to the key points
man i wasnt expecting this to be this good, almsot 40 minutes in and its brilliant
I chose right with devil Jin but the devs said Nah
I think they're going to buff him later in Tekken 8's lifespan similar to the last update to Street fighter 5 giving Ryu all the tools.
Or buff him so people don't all switch to Heihachi Mishima.
@@DioRando98 Why wouldn't they want people to switch to Heihachi, they're selling the dlc
Brother, we’re gonna need a toolbox series where you explain every character this way😭
I love the tricky eileen shout-out, she's great
Watched the whole hour and enjoyed the character trade study. Everything has a trade off and we definitely tend to forget that. Gg
Watched the whole 1.25 hours of the video and loved it
the tekken king blue queue makes me feel so much better. i've been stuck in blue 2.0 for the past week and im losing my mindddddd 😭😭
This man is breaking down the psychology of choice. Very deep thought provoking. I think why I love fighting games. Is everything you described. A fast pace game of chess. A battle of the minds and dexterity. The fire of Fighting. Enter the Tekken
I think your channel is the best discovery I made for my Tekken 8 journey as much as Eileen's, your insights are very informatives !
The xiaoyu section is legit the closest anyone has gotten me to trying to pick her up, well done
My plan is working! MUHAHAHAHA!!!
Chad the Third is Jay D. Legend of Tekken
Very informative video! It's honestly nice to see someone talk about Leo and know what they're talking about.
He’s good, I haven’t played him in a while but I gave him some good time when I started, fun to play and pretty fun to fight
Not only is this video incredibly informative but you are so charismatic that it kept me engaged throughout the whole thing, great video!
This has to be my favorite video on this channel. Loved every second.
This is one of the best videos ive ever watched about a fighting game thank you for this blessing brother
@@ChadTheThirdUK can't wait for It man, keep up the good work👍
I've begun playing Leo recently, and your video was really interesting.
Very good video, watched the entire thing! Subscribed 💯
Crazy how a character I overlooked for over a decade is now my preference.
amazing video, thanks for not just hopping on the wave of "play what you like". This is a way more nuanced take on how you should find your main.
Quite as it’s kept learning tekken outside of the game is just as fun.
People like yourself, tricky and wisdom seeker have mixed psychology and tekken tech so well.
Big up you 3 fr! 🎉
Finally a tekken UA-camr who’s educational and not just shitting on “insert character” mains.
Thank you for the great content!
I'm 20 mins in and I've already subscribed, you were already preaching to the converted but I'm very much on board with your way of thinking
[Balanced, like Leo!]
Would you consider making a video that provides a short / general picture of EVERY character? No one I have found really describes the character's as eloquently as you.
This might be asking too much, but this video has been the most informative in terms of understanding both different styles of play AND which characters lean towards them.
This is my first Tekken. So this video hits perfectly as I have one main character (my 1st choice) while I dance around other characters, but feel trapped in character loyalty to stick to my first choice.
A video that describes each character in a concise manner like you have done here, would be legendary.
Keep up the awesome work!
Hey man I started tekken with tekken 8 and your tekken real talk series has been so good to listen to keep up the good work
Keep posting videos like this they're so good
I think kazuyas df2 counts as a defensive crutch of sorts.
Lei is going to SNATCH SOULS if he ever comes to this game lol
Imagine he gets 8 heat smashes >.
Erwischt.
Im watching this video and im just thinking to myself “man Reina has tools from like all of these characters I rly chose right” 😭
Honestly i am aware my character doesn't fit my style but they are the sole reason am so dedicated to the game so much, so if i change then i will not be as motivated as with them but at the same time its really difficult to adjust to your character's style when its just not how you play.
Yeah that's tricky. Who do you main, and who do you THINK would fit your playstyle if you had as much time/experience with them?
@@ChadTheThirdUK I main hwoarang but am overall a defensive player so a character with good punishes and decent poking/keepout is probably my style
@@champ044_3 she already peaked my interest but am currently focused on improving my hwo (if I get him to tekken king I'll play other character)
@@champ044_3What’s a good character that fits a very aggressive playstyle? like it would never give you room to breathe
I’ve never had to worry about Lidia’s horrendously linear moveset until then because most of my opponents were playing 2D Tekken until now 😂
It makes you come to terms with your character’s strengths and weaknesses.
Wow, What a really nice informative video.
Man , what the actual hell. Literally hit Tekken King got demoted all the way down and was in a character crisis . Amazing vid ! So helpful!
Awesome video!
Reina 👀
before watching: steve is just too much fun. Dempsey roll mixups are just godtier enjoyment
Amazing video! The issue I have is that I'm not sure which character fits into which playstyle or toolbox. Do you have a video about that?
I clicked on the video because it was popping up in my feed all day yesterday, but after a couple minutes I paused and thought "alright let me get some tea".
@@Weaver0x00 not gonna lie; honoured to have been worth the trip to the kettle 😁
Stay awesome..
(Kinda.)
I go back to King after rage quitting Kazuya with this new sidestep knowlege.
I get to Fujin with ease in a like 2 days and am now hard stuck there. EZ
I will get to max rank eventually.
Also this guy is funny af 😂
I picked Dragunov because people were complaining about him on the internet and it's been a great ride. I feel like the character is a perfect fit for me :)
Menace to society spotted
@@volktol4432 in MTG I like to play Control so I can watch the light die in the eyes of my opponents, and I feel it's similar to Tekken with Drag. I get to suffocate my opponent with plus frame moves and throws on getup.
Nothing more satisfying than hitting wr2 three times in a row on an opponent trying to get up 😊
You're a MONSTER!
I respect it...
This is the best video I've seen in a while. Very well spoken!
Facts saw Steve Fox and went with him thinking he was going to be strong. Boy was I wrong.
He is strong. He's just hard to use effectively 😄
@@BeretBay not in this game bottom 15 for sure. He is hard to use but no reward.
@@RandomPerson28337 No, I have to disagree. Steve is not bad in this game either. Especially, after the buffs.
I prefer power, freedom of movement and myriad of moves for any situation. Also being able to skip neutral, evasion, stepping on people, good punishment, ability to force mixup after mixup after mixup. Wall carry. Unbreakable grabs. Parries.
So I play Reina
this video is awesome! do you think you can make more toolbox style videos of other characters? that would be super helpful to a lot of people including me
That would be nice
Hold Up... Let him crook. 🤣😂😭
Tbh ive often thought of the same thing about my own main
Interesting topic u got here
Amazing video. As a beginner to Tekken, it would be cool if you did a series breaking down all the other characters in the same way. It can be hard figuring out what each character is supposed to do and be good at for a first timer
Yea definitely a fan of your content now. I've poured more hours than I care to mention across several tekkens on Xiaoyu. I arrogantly assumed i had little to learn on the philosophy of a character and just needed more reps. I deserve more popularity for your thoughts.
Didn't new the channel, big fan from now on.
Super valid. I was a king main in 7 but fell in love with Azucena on release and I can tell I that I would be way worse at azu if I hadn’t learned the game on king
I guess a good explanation for your character royalty talk is like me in T7, I could play any character I pick up Blue/Tekken Emperor level, which was my level, but I choose to play this character because it's the one I click with the most, they're the character I want to truly master.
This video was just right on point and fun to watch. Keep it up. Really enjoyed this!
