This is the truth, most people have no clue what they're doing in low-mid ranks so even if the character is super high in execution like Lee, Kazuya etc... you will win games by just doing some of their stronger basic moves or even if you execute slower than optimal difficult moves its not a big deal because most of the time it will land anyway.. I just had to stop the video to give appreciation to what SWE said in the intro. Picking a character that looks cool to you to start with is always the proper thing to do. I do it every new fighting game I get and think others should too because you'll have a lot more fun if you do. I just want to call out people that don't do this though. Everyone that hops on a new fighting game and immediately asks the question "who's good in this game?" or "where's the tier list" and picks their character based off of that I don't respect unless your aim is to go to National and International tournaments. You're not getting on the game to actually enjoy it and have fun at that point imho.
Rooflemonger among others makes vids that promotes that mentality but very few say pick who u like...as for people that want to pick based upon their strength, u can't really blame people for wanting their character that they like to also be good. Think of sf5 ryu until v-shift...

This was definitely one of the best pick your main guides ive ever seen in a game. I just bought tekken 8 and it really helped me get a grasp on things! You earned my sub
Excited to get to play Tekken 8 tonight. I already plan on playing Reina, Leroy, Lee, maybe Claudio, I enjoyed playing him in the demo so actually getting a chance to train with him will be cool, zafina seems interesting, and so does Victor. I foresee big training montages in future.
As a hwoarang main who knows how annoying he can be i genuinely appreciate your honesty on him, alot of people tend to dowplay the character due to his annoyance
Not that armor King was easy to play, but having those traditional tools in a move list made all the difference sometimes. Brian's complete lack of traditional tools in Tekken makes him extremely difficult to play in regular situations. You constantly have to be out thinking and rethinking everything that you do. I noticed that the most when I spent some time learning armor king
Thanks main man. I was in a dark place finding a character. I used Zaffina and Xiaoyu and often felt something was not right. Im new to tekken and like you said, they are cheese characters ( i didnt know ) and i feel im not properly learning tekken with them. People in purple rank start to counter my cheese and i felt puzzled. I looked at your list to try and find myself a good fundamental character to restart my tekken journey in a healthy way and learn back from the start
Are you the same The Main Man that wrote the Tekken Tag combo / guide in a magazine back in early 2000 ? If so, I just want to say I had a great time at the arcade back in high school so glad I found this channel after 20 years - time to get back to Tekken!
I go with Xiaoyu, simply because I played her most in the last Tekken game I ever owned which was Tekken Tag Tournament on PS2 launch. That was an age before guides and training tools and she was the one, I just figured out some good combos on my own, that carried me to victory over all my friends, that knew even less about fighting game fundamentals.
It’s that time of the decade boys. We choose our mains, stop what we’re doing to tune into Daddy TMM whenever he uploads, and enjoy some #goodassTekken🔥
I really like Jin in this game. I’ve been playing tekken since tekken 3, and I’ve really dove into the competitive aspect of tekken since tekken 6. My 3 mains have been King, Bryan, and Jin. It took me a while to master Jin but when I did he was incredibly rewarding. I’m pretty good at executing his more difficult inputs and I feel like I can play Jin at a pretty high level these days. I for one actually like that they made Jin a little easier to play. I love that he has one button electrics now and his moveset being simplified for me has made him significantly more fun to play (he was really fun already it’s just now you don’t have to work as hard). I feel like the only negative about it is you really can’t argue that as a jin main you have better execution than any other players. But that doesn’t matter to me and that doesn’t mean his high level execution has been taken out. You can absolutely play Jin the same way by using high level inputs. It’s just now you have the extra option of going into breaking step with easy electrics and I for one have been loving mixing the two actions in game.
I always played Eddy and Lee but decided with a new game it's time to learn a new character and finally (hopefully) git gud, so I'll be playing raven in T8 and spending a lot of time in training mode lol 😄
Tekken 8 is bringing in a lot of new Tekken players, including me, havent played Tekken since T5 came out. Making Jin easier to use makes sense. He's catches the eyes of new players
In terms of character design and gameplay appeal ( impactful moves and violent-looking moves ), Bryan is my dude. Sucks for me that Tekken 8 is my first Tekken...
An aspect missing about Yoshi is his Freestyle Potential. Yeah we lab a lot of flowcharts, but the real magic happens when you just remember certain stance transition moves, a couple of ways of how to get into those moves, how to transition out without breaking the mix and then just going at it. When you get into that "flow", how the fck is the opponent supposed to guess what you are going to do next, if you are making it up as it happens. But you are at the risk of being launch punished for this a lot, so this is where as TMM said, the flash comes in. Or you read the opponent trying to interrupt and launch them instead. Its really fun and organic, the types of matches you can have with a yoshimitsu that knows his whole movelist and transitions i think.
When I first started Tekken in the past I started with asuka cause the way her personality and her movesets feels strangely heavy and cool but the longer I played Tekken I noticed that I love playing Nina that I almost didn't notice I've been spamming her nonstop every single match just because I wanted to learn this super cool combo I saw here in UA-cam
I totally disagree with mainman, getting xiaoyu to work beyond the basics took many days. Interrupting xiaoyu is much easier than playing her and i never had difficulty beating her. Same with learning flowcharts, after you use a tactic two times, you need to switch it up. Its not that easy.
3:28 That’s a really good point. Tekken was always the outlier im that the main characters were always some of the most difficult ones, in other fighting games, the main character is useally quite simple, like Ryu in Street Fighter
I thought that we were going to see TMM talk positively about every character, including Xiaoyu for once LOL. Instead a 5 minute tirade about how people who play her don't really know Tekken and how the best part of her is seeing someone beat her. Well I guess we would never recommend her to people looking to pick their main anyway... considering you do have to be absolutely *monstrous* at Tekken to main her effectively. Those "flow charts" take monumental amounts of labbing and calm and composed execution, absolutely nothing is free about Xiaoyu. No abusable and brainless gimmicks like Jin d+2, Bryan QCB+1, Feng 3+4 in heat, etc.
I was hoping for an explanation about Leo. "Will anyone even go to this part of the video?" Yikes. I know they are an all-rounder, can you give literally anything else? Good info on other characters, it's just some characters definitely got better explanations than others. Can really tell where biases/experience is.
Yea, it’s like he still hasn’t grasp the concept of those characters. Some characters can simply oppress you with big plus on block moves and hard hitting 50-50s. Others don’t have that luxury and have to read their opponents while in the negative frames. Having an opponent “steal their turn” seems to trigger him if it’s not done with a basic sidestep lol. For some reason he keeps assuming everytime that happens, it’s because of a pre-planned flow chart 😂 How he omits Feng when he does the exact thing is also pretty funny, but I guess he’s masculine enough to get a pass
I love King there is no character that will ever make me drop him other than Kiryu. People call us cheap but when 30% of the cast can just back away it’s tough lol. Leo in particular is a nightmare to deal with for me
My mains in Tekken are Raven, Hwoarang and Jin. I like mainly Raven because he's very unique and authentic, and because he resemble Naruto characters in his unorthodox fighting style approach. We need diversity in the category of fighting styles, so Raven it's a very good all-rounder authentic character exemple in my opinion. My first Tekken that introduced me to the Tekken series was Tekken 3 and my mains there was Hwoarang and Jin, fast forward a couple of years and when Tekken 4 arrived, my mains there was still Hwoarang and Jin, and Christie or Eddy. But when the Masterpiece Tekken 5 arrived, Raven has always be my trump card and my first main of the Tekken Series, follow by Hwoarang, Jin and Christie or Eddy. So all of these characters that I mention are considered OG staple characters of the Tekken Franchise by many Tekken Veterans. 🤷🏻♂️☯️
i'd say all these things are important if you want to play online or up to an intermediate level. if you're just playing against your friends who don't know what wave dash or korean back dash maybe you yourself don't either then none of this matter. all you need to listen to is "this character is bullshit", those characters will make your friends want to cry and if they pick them you will want to cry. if anything feel free to play what you think looks cool because all these "advanced" characters are only advanced when you get to an intermediate level of play.
Yeah. Sometimes he just go like " this guy has too many cheap things bla bla. " how is it supposed to guide people on finding a character of their playstyle?
I find myself wanting to play so many characters. I main Steve, but I'm looking around and going "omg, everyone is cool now". Bryan has always been sick, but it looks a little easier to get plus frames going now. Jun looks easy but also egregious, might be fun. Claudio same jam but the single hit nature of him is appealing. Reina having a df2 pushes me into wanting to play a Mishima finally, it's a nice safety blanket while getting used to electrics. It's just so cool to see everyone play so interesting
How I do it is I picked a character I thought looked cool( this is my first Tekken game, I ordered Tekken 2,4,5,6,7. Coming in on Saturday.) I first played Jin,then dragunov, then Asuka, then Jun, Now Kazuya. I just experiment with every character and last I checked King looked very interesting, but so far Kazuya is not only the coolest to play as but also very straightforward and Fun. If I were to say I had a main it would be Kazuya or Jun. those are the funnest characters right next to Jin for me. When it comes to fighting games I’m a sucker for the main characters.

I main Lee too and I see everywhere that his slide got nerfed, but to me its a huge buff.. being full crouch +frames after hitting from the other side of the screen is really good.. b33 natural is good too.
Did you mean T6?
@@STOPPEDINCOLORADO Yeah, played him in T6 a bit, then mained him in T7 when I actually got serious about playing the game
seeing you on that bandai namco eu channel was amazing. i picked up tekken again after years of not playing because i found my old ps2 and when i searched for some guides you popped up. you made tekken feel accessible instead of it being so overwhelming. gg's
As a Kuma main, you are welcome for the matchup knowledge
TT2 customisation theme is always gold
So true. I put the theme in the night city stage and it fits really well!
Man, the Tag 2 custom character beat brought me back. Soo much time spent in this mode swagging my characters out to this 🔥 theme
Tekken music in general goes hard. Especially from 3 onward.
Thanks man I was wondering which Tekken game it was from
Just the right video to shorten the last few hours until christmas.
There’s time stamps for a reason
@@danielmwaura9 Not that i needed them, but OK.
The man, the myth and the legend!! So happy to see you as the official bandai namco's beginner guide mentor! Man I remember when I was watching your channel just to learn ewgf on Tekken 6 maybe like 12 or 13 years ago!! Great stuff as always
the backgrounf music being the shop music from tag two brought back so much nostalgia. hands down one of the best ost's in tekken history
crazy how they gave lili shapeshifting abilities, she's my go to main now
Super useful, been a Nina main since 1998. Can't wait to main her (and Anna) again for Tekken 8!!!
Praying she's in the season pass year 1. hopefully we don't have to wait 2-3 years Like last time
Tack för att du hjälper de nya spelarna, du är fantastisk!
Shaheen is very fun to play his mixups are hilarious. That face skating move sold me when i saw that you could do it in succession
That got me too in picking him up at least a little bit. Also the back 2 attack makes my brother mold so hard 😂
Its not a TheMainmanSWE video without the Nina downplay and Kazuya build up. It didnt disappoint. I cant wait to lab Reina.
He doesn’t downplay Nina. Everything he says about her is spot on. It’s only the cringy Nina fans who desperately want to convince everyone that she’s hard when all they really do is spam her unfair braindead strings anyway and don’t do the actually hard stuff
@@TheBigEmstos It's a joke. You don't have to go full retard rookie.
Go back and watch all his videos crying how braindead easy Kaz is now.
@TheBigEmstos nina is pretty fun, she may be cheesy but learning her hard stuff is pretty fun, plus i like pure rushdown
seeing jin fall from advanced tier to beginner tier kinda hurts
As he should. Considering he's the protagonist and first to catch beginner's attention, it only makes sense for him to be an entry skill-level character
@@dexter2898 nah bro it should be a reward for you that u can play him if u are advanced but its only my opinion
Unfortunately it's true...In terms of design, he looks the best in my opinion and also he's got plenty of new cool moves with the exception of some devil flips he's doing but he's so easy to play which really takes out the fun from the character for me.
People are exaggerating like crazy

*A single tear falls from my eye
I'm a fujin leo main. Leo is crazy strong 😂😂
I will die for Leo, very underrated, we fight for the respect Leo deserves
Lili is my second main so ill go with her for the time being but i might try other characters but once Anna is revealed as DLC im definitely maining her as i did since the begining in Tekken 1
it makes me sad Anna isn't in the main roster anymore too, she wasn't my main in any game b4 but i always loved doing the arcade mode with her and Nina and seeing their rivalry
Jin (The main), Devil Jin, Lars, (maybe Leo too?) is probably the lineup but man I wanna play so many characters, Jun, Hworang, Asuka, Victor, Reina, Raven, Leroy, Kuma and maybe even Bryan and Yoshi everyone just looks so awesome to play it's insane, I'm not sleeping tomorrow.
Jin has been and always will be that guy for me, obligated to main him, no matter his changes he's the character i will always main in tekken.
TMM must really love talking about Lili
@@TheFightingGentleman Not knowledgeable about SFV but I am more so knowledgeable about 6 since I've got many hours in it. I get what you mean however my thing is people only looking for good characters and only playing them because they're like top 5 in a game. There's plenty of people I see play JP and Ken specifically cuz they're like top 3. I don't blame anyone for wanting the character they play to be good but all I'm saying is don't immediately go for that and only that cuz its lame in my opinion.
@@TheFightingGentleman Problem is, that usually, someone doesn't even know why their character is bad, if they even are lowtier. And that that doesn't matter if you're a good player pushing the character above the basics. That's why everyone always says tier lists only matter for the pro ranks/actual tourneys
@@angelsoflolz that and the fact that tier lists are now pretty much a meme since anyone can make one without being held to standard...
@@ojay4923 i agree but this is the by-product of "patch culture"...the consumers are at fault for this coming to pass despite this being an industry like season passes...most people don't want to accept the fact that they are the reason why they are or aren't good. Top players have been tier whores for decades, but the end results are what's important
I mained yoshi since 3 because despite being trash at tekken I'm always amazed at what happens when I have fun pressing random buttons with him.
For me it’s between Reina and Law for my Main, all depends on how Reina plays but from what Iv seen she looks really fun.
everyone knows law he is not easy 😂😅
This was definitely one of the best pick your main guides ive ever seen in a game. I just bought tekken 8 and it really helped me get a grasp on things! You earned my sub
Excited to get to play Tekken 8 tonight. I already plan on playing Reina, Leroy, Lee, maybe Claudio, I enjoyed playing him in the demo so actually getting a chance to train with him will be cool, zafina seems interesting, and so does Victor. I foresee big training montages in future.
Kuma is incredible in this game and Im offended you think he won’t beat you with them paws. Bear on top. W’s all day
Forever a steve main 🥊🥊
Currently learning Steve rn
Reina being both the most complicated and most popular character is a testament at how cool her design is
Reason why she popular because she attractive and she brand new
I already know I ll play Kuma, nobody will understand what I do, me neither and I ll have fun
As a hwoarang main who knows how annoying he can be i genuinely appreciate your honesty on him, alot of people tend to dowplay the character due to his annoyance
This video is gunna blow up for sure, get ready fr the next 10 years tekken 8!🎉
Love your character select music, your sunset is straight up my favorite song from tekken
I'll be maining nina and yoshimitsu
As a beginner whose first tekken game is 8 and just got it on monday... Bryan is SO fun to me
Not that armor King was easy to play, but having those traditional tools in a move list made all the difference sometimes.
If so, I just want to say I had a great time at the arcade back in high school
so glad I found this channel after 20 years - time to get back to Tekken!
01:13:02
This needs to be Bryan's intro announcer voice/animation from this day forward.
Can’t wait for Saul Goodman to be added as DLC 🙏
I go with Xiaoyu, simply because I played her most in the last Tekken game I ever owned which was Tekken Tag Tournament on PS2 launch. That was an age before guides and training tools and she was the one, I just figured out some good combos on my own, that carried me to victory over all my friends, that knew even less about fighting game fundamentals.
I'm pretty happy that there aren't many other Xiaoyu mains. I love playing her, but I really hate fighting her.
Glad I’m finally back, I got bored of tekken 7 but I’m ready to get back into the grind
It’s that time of the decade boys. We choose our mains, stop what we’re doing to tune into Daddy TMM whenever he uploads, and enjoy some #goodassTekken🔥
This is the first Tekken I got into. I started out with Lars, but I soon got bored with him and switched to Jack-8. Having a blast now!

As someone who is relatively new to Tekken, I'm going straight to Kazuya, and Im already have fun lol
This is the way. At least he isn't totally kneecapped like T6 or T7 vanilla
@NYG5 Yeah lol
I play Kazuya a lot in Smash, which is the big reason why I'm maining him
It's so awesome when smash gets people to play the origin of the character they play.
@TrueReverse74 True. Tho when I got into SF6, my first Street Fighter, I gravitated to Zangief. Mainly because my main in smash is Incineroar.
This thread is awesome
Thanks MainMan. I haven't played Tekken in years but T8 has me wanting to get back into it and this video was very helpful
I always played Eddy and Lee but decided with a new game it's time to learn a new character and finally (hopefully) git gud, so I'll be playing raven in T8 and spending a lot of time in training mode lol 😄
Yea I'm digging Raven,I'ma main him and one female character💯
Tekken 8 is bringing in a lot of new Tekken players, including me, havent played Tekken since T5 came out. Making Jin easier to use makes sense. He's catches the eyes of new players
Cant believe we live in a world where jin is easier than hwoarang
Emotionless Passion is the best fighting game character theme ever.
Reina was high on my list until you said 3rd Strike parries. Now she’s number 1. Let’s go…
Will still try Yoshi though
In terms of character design and gameplay appeal ( impactful moves and violent-looking moves ), Bryan is my dude. Sucks for me that Tekken 8 is my first Tekken...
I'm dying at your explanations! 😂 love it!
My fave tekken youtuber! So good to hear your insights on each character.
Reina and zafina are definitely going to be the characters i play most🤝🏾until Anna that is🤣
Been here since 35k subs. My oh my, it's awesome to see your success over the years. I Hope you 500k in Tekken 8.
I am going to main Devil Jin, Reina, Jin and Kazuya
Really keeping it in the family there huh lol
First Tekken game and I love Jin! Him and Kazuya are badass
An aspect missing about Yoshi is his Freestyle Potential.
Yeah we lab a lot of flowcharts, but the real magic happens when you just
remember certain stance transition moves, a couple of ways of how to get
into those moves, how to transition out without breaking the mix and then
just going at it.
When you get into that "flow", how the fck is the opponent supposed to guess
what you are going to do next, if you are making it up as it happens. But you
are at the risk of being launch punished for this a lot, so this is where as TMM
said, the flash comes in. Or you read the opponent trying to interrupt and launch
them instead. Its really fun and organic, the types of matches you can have with
a yoshimitsu that knows his whole movelist and transitions i think.
Got Jin locked in as my main being a brand new player jumping straight into ranked. But really interested in Xiaoyu, Leo & Panda for my end game.
Leo is crazy fun would highly recommend
I totally disagree with mainman, getting xiaoyu to work beyond the basics took many days. Interrupting xiaoyu is much easier than playing her and i never had difficulty beating her.
Same with learning flowcharts, after you use a tactic two times, you need to switch it up. Its not that easy.
From a few videos I've seen he really hates her because of her cheesiness, so he is probably a bit biased about her
Just cant believe i was like 5 years old playing tekken 2 and now at 29 im playing tekken 8 shit is wild
3:28 That’s a really good point. Tekken was always the outlier im that the main characters were always some of the most difficult ones, in other fighting games, the main character is useally quite simple, like Ryu in Street Fighter
I havent touched Jun since Tekken Revolution. Bob and Jun were my TR mains. I remember watching TMM back then too lol. Hes a Mishima machine
Kazuya and Jun as always for me, mains since T1/T2 as a kid.
Came for the breakdown of my character, stayed for the commentary. This dude is pretty funny 🤣
I still think that Shaheen will have a 0.1% usage🤣
OMG "Your Sunset" best game ever.
For some reason he keeps assuming everytime that happens, it’s because of a pre-planned flow chart 😂
How he omits Feng when he does the exact thing is also pretty funny, but I guess he’s masculine enough to get a pass
I LOVE this video! I was just about to say that you will have soo many content related things you will be able to do now when tekken 8 comes!!!
I love King there is no character that will ever make me drop him other than Kiryu. People call us cheap but when 30% of the cast can just back away it’s tough lol. Leo in particular is a nightmare to deal with for me
Kiryu and Majima would be so sick.
When a character one grab does 100+ damage...idk wut to say and don't think anyone is backing away in rank lol
Ever since tekken 3 jin has been the most fun to play for me so its easy for me to decide.
ehh but tekken 3 jin and tekken 4 jin are completely different
I am going to main 4 characters, Jin, Hwoarang, Reina, and I'm still finding one more
do 4th dragunov
Pick kazuya don't be a wuss
Leave a spot for DLC my man :D
French John Wick
Just wait good ol kiryu or tifa
As a Steve main since T4, Im excited to be switching to Reina
This was less of a "how to pick your main" and more of Main Main venting about characters he doesn't like
Yeah. Sometimes he just go like " this guy has too many cheap things bla bla. " how is it supposed to guide people on finding a character of their playstyle?
Yea, Rooflemonger dropped a way better in depth “pick a character” minus all of the cringe salt

Xioyu part is hilarious man literally said in pick your main video. The best part of the character is watching you lose.
Claudio's projectile can also be done from starburst too which is just super crazy.
Dude when I saw lars's trailer in tekken 8
I just saw how cool he looked and said "yep that was sick, I am gonna play him"
I find myself wanting to play so many characters.
Their push to make Jin the good guy is hilarious to me. He's as much of a villain as Kazuya, except Kaz has an actual personality 😋
Not even close, you really gotta do mental gymnastics to say Jin was ever as evil as Kazuya even at his worst moment in t6.
Another Kazuya main denied
@@anthonychase6906 How many died during the WW3 that he started? 😄
This is the first time that TMM has been generally positive about every character in the game
