  • I will fix the seat foam in the Solstice. When I got the car, it had typical bolster wear on the left bolster of the driver seat. I will use upholstery glue and attach additional foam to replace the shredded foam under the cloth. It was a real mess, and just kind of floppy as you will see in the video. I will also use my Juki DNU-1541 to stitch a heel pad on the left floor mat. All very low dollar repairs that make a big difference in the feel when you get in the car. Well worth the labor.

Wait a minute I used a turkey knife for 20 years to cut foam, it worked very well

Yeah I have seen people use them. Probably a lot safer than this thing I have here. It doesn't get stuck like a turkey knife will. I have cut 10" of foam with a straight edge with this tool. Not sure you can do that with a turkey knife.

Unfortunately my 2007 Pontiac Solstice endured some flooding from Tropical Storm Eta last week. The water probably got up to the bottom of the seat. I've been drying out the floorboards....but the padding under it is still wet. The fuse box by the foot of the passenger seat doesn't look good. Obviously under the hood is most important but it looked normal/dry to me. I have not turned the ignition on -- I read not to do that. Plus, the fuses are broken. I made an insurance claim and am waiting for next steps. Sad because I've had the car from its birth. I know there are many elements a mechanic will have to assess, but what do you think?

Sorry to hear about this. If I were to look at repairing something like this, I would take a few steps. Firstly, disconnect the battery and do not power up the car until you are sure there isn't water in the electronics. In your case, the thing to be concerned about is the BCM (Body Control Module) at the passenger footwell. That is easy to remove, just unplug it and remove it completely. It has some logic and a main connection point for many things. You might be able to take the cover off and dry out the logic. I live in Oregon state. We get tons of rain here and not all of my cars are inside where it is dry. Occasionally, I leave a window down, or have a plugged drain hole that will soak part of the interior. In fact, right now I have a car with a leak on both sides from heavy rains. I removed both seats, and sill plates. This allows you to pick up the carpet a bit to get airflow under the carpet. In your case, I would remove the center console and carpet completely. I rely on a 50 pint dehumidifier and small oscillating fan to dry out a wet interior. I really don't know what I would do without the dehumidifier. I use it at least twice a year, and will insure nothing will mold or get musty. Dash controls, cluster, and radio likely will be OK. On the engine side, the ECM is on the left side firewall area behind the front drivers wheel. This is mounted pretty high so you are going to be OK there too. I can't really think of anything major (except maybe the transmission) that would have been exposed to water and fail. There is also an amp (Monsoon) behind the driver seat, but it too is pretty high on the rear firewall. The main thing I see with salvage flood cars is drying out the harness completely. Completely removing the carpet and using the dehumidifier for a few days should rectify that problem. If you end up fixing this yourself, I would get an enclosed space (bathroom, closet, etc.) and put your carpet and seats in there and run the dehumidifier/fan combo. Those things really suck the water out of things. There are also switches in the seat to sense a body sitting in them that might be wet, and also power seat motors are going to be wet if you have power seats. Sorry, this happened to you. I wish I could help because this one might be saved fairly easily.

@@afternoongarage Sorry for my late reply back. I really appreciate your thoughtful response. I just got off the phone with my insurance company and am going to have it towed to the GM dealership tomorrow. I've already mentally accepted that it might be a total loss (because it was flooded by salt water). But, if they can fix it, I'd be so happy. I'll update you! Tell your Solstice hello : ) Mine is a red GXP. Just had the hood repainted last year.

@@krystlemurphy8514 Oh salt water. That is usually a death sentence for a car because of problems that can arise in the future as a result of the flood damage. Since you owned it since it was new, I bet it was a nice car. The Solstice is such a unique car for the money. Good luck with this in the future, I have really enjoyed my car.
