230 to 290 BPM - Extreme Drumming (HD)

- Опубліковано 26 чер 2017
- Hi UA-cam !
I wanted to do an updated version of my "220 to 270 BPM Double Bass Drumming" video, which was my very beginning of heel-toe and sound recording. It sounded sloppy, my technique was bad, that's why this new video is here !
Now I am equipped with better quality mics and I know a bit more how to mix. So the sound will be better than the video which was released 4 years ago.
I'm still using heel-toe technique, which means I play two strokes with the right foot, then two strokes with the left foot. That's why my legs are moving with the same speed but not with the same move, it just doubles the strike within each leg.
My kicks are, as you hear, triggered. I have the E-Kits triggers from Axis Percussion, and I taped the hammer's spring so there are less triggering issues.
As you will hear, my consistency is lacking precision starting at 270bpm. I'm working on it. If you have some advice please give it to me !
I'm trying to pass the gap of the 300bpm but it is really sloppy.. Next time !
00:14 - 230 BPM
01:35 - 240 BPM
03:08 - 250 BPM
04:38 - 260 BPM
06:08 - 270 BPM
07:21 - 280 BPM
08:23 - 290 BPM
If you have some constructive criticism, tell me everything you want, I would be glad to discuss with all of you.
See you soon !

@@ThomasCremier Esse É Um Muito Barato Dessa Batera!🤟🤟🤟🤟
Thomas Crémier ive never heard of kick bleed being a problem. New to me. I’m glad it’s working for you
@@jonpnorris Do you play in any extreme metal bands?
And I mean extreme as in akin to tech-death, or something like symphonic black metal, where the kick patterns are the most intricate.
Bleed on the kicks is VERY noticeable when the bass drum/guitar gallop patterns get this precise.
ConkyJoe89 are your talking about bleed or blend? I understand when the phrases become muddy and unclear. But if the guitar is running direct, then bleed is impossible. If the guitar is not, the cabinet mic would have to be very close to the kick mic for bleed.
It doesn’t seem that impressive when watching the speed gradually get faster and faster bit by bit. But when you skip back and forth from the 230bpm part to the 290bpm part you actually realize how insane this is. This dude is crazy talented.
Thank you so much ! :D
Yeah you understood well, this technique isn't made for impressiveness, but for speed and stamina ! With this, we can achieve ultra high speeds 😊

@@GesuCrypto actually Samus wasn't saying that his double bass was cheating. You know Samus uses doubles himself? We was showing the difference between what was real and fake. The guy doing singles in Samus' video was fake. This is real. Just learn about other techniques before talking shit.
@@GesuCrypto Ok, those are called triggers, I am a drummer myself! I know what they are doing and I truly know how triggers work. What Thomas is doing is playing doubles, he has triggers that even out the sound of each hit because that's what people in extreme metal do! I hate fake drumming, but I know the difference. The guy in Samus' video was clearly not doing it. Thomas was. He just had triggers that I thought sounded too clicky. But this isn't fake. This isn't programmed.
Edit: Thomas Lang uses a different technique. He is able to play louder, but not faster.
Please again, learn how triggers work. SAMUS EVEN HAS A VIDEO ABOUT THEM!

Is that indeed heel toe? I try to do that with no success but it seems double strokes with only one part of the foot to me. Correct me if im wrong.
wtf?
Its not heel toe dude is trigger its fault nice triggres enjoy
He sets his triggers to play 2 notes at a time so he only has to play it at half speed
So glad to see guys really perfecting the double stroke method. Outstanding and very precise.
Thank you so much !!! :D
And if you are curious to check a method to learn that technique, here is my interpretation 😉
ua-cam.com/video/HuWI3aJzqAU/v-deo.html
Cheers from France !
Its just a very nice heel toe technique even if he's playing more with his midfoot than his heels. Heel toe is actually very 'soft' but fast playing style, so you need to trigger it up. But you can hear the real time dynamics of this guy throughout the whole video, where he clearly is doing double strokes on his bass drums. The lower speeds are really clean that's awesome :D
Drumming any faster will result in ascending from this world to the spirit world
ExtraEarth 33 ahahahahah will try about it 😉
HAHAHAHAHA
you mean 'descending' ..... into the netherworld. going up is not an option if he stays on this track.
to the ones complaining about triggers:
he still got to hit all those notes ... you know that right ?
triggers makes up for possible inconsistency in strength over those hits
they do not slot your notes on a gird - yes they do not quantise your notes ....
If he was playing sloppy - you would hear it EVEN more with triggers ....
Actually i think that triggers are a really good tool to learn consistency at those speeds cause you really hear every single note .... or at least the attack - which with an acoustic kit would be a LOT harder to hear....
Thats cool but thats not grooving , sounds like a drum machine , and thousand guys play like this nowadays
Are they creating better music , Are they innovative and create their own concept and are recognizable at the listen ?
Thats what matters
The problem with theses guys , they believe that mooving foward is up triplet strokes to 290 bpm.
It sounds like shit .
Its just exercices .
i know very little about drumming and absolutely nothing about heavy metal drumming. care to tell me what triggers are and how the hell hes doing the insanely fast kick part?
@@matthewanderson1916 heel toe technique.
@@matthewanderson1916 Triggers are things that you attach to a drum, which allow you to 'trigger' (i.e activate) electronic samples when you play the drum. If you're familiar with electronic drum kits, a trigger basically allows you to turn an acoustic drum into an electronic one. In this video, the sound you hear when the drummer hits the bass drum isn't the sound made by the bass drum recorded into a microphone like the other drums on his drum kit, instead, when he hits the drum, the trigger sends an electronic signal to a computer, which then triggers (i.e plays) the sound that you hear. He is doing the fast double bass parts using heel-toe technique, which is where you play two bass drum hits with only one leg movement by using your heel and your toe, allowing you to play twice as fast.
Dude mad props ... You must have spent millions of hours to get to this level :) Absolutely Badass :)
Thank you for recognising the amount of work put it that technique ! 😊
And I did a video to explain it and make you learn how to do it !
ua-cam.com/video/HuWI3aJzqAU/v-deo.html
imagine if he had a twin peddle on each so he’d play four instead of two
It would be one continous sound
A constant tonal note !! xD
I would love to see that
ah yes 580 bpm quadruple kick
@@ThomasCremier anything over 250bpm already is, 16th notes are 20 a second the lowest pitch humans can hear
When my single strokes were at 160 I decided to try heel toe, I got up to 220 bpm in under 30 mins lol and it just felt like 8th notes. That's why some people think it's cheating, only a fraction of the work goes into it. It's 6 months later n my singles are only around 200bpm. Definitely not hating on this guy he's a great drummer!
VOXX113 um there is no heel toe happening... it’s a mesh head.. basically an electronic head and mallet set up.. so ya anyone with half ass decent skill and daddy’s money can do this
@@seangangstad9597 Are you saying there's no heel-toe going on in THIS video?
...bc yes, there is. It's quite obvious
@@slothstradamus89 I call it pseudo heel toe. You’re not using the true heel toe technique like jojo Mayer would. This is very minimal movement and relies more on tension and rebound than true heel toe. There is very little pressure used to make the second stroke because it relies on bouncing of the beater and using triggers. It’s like doing a buzz roll on the snare. Anyone can do this technique relatively easily. It would take years and years to ever get this fast using singles. Sadly everyone is using this technique now so everything in metal has become boringly stupid fast.

Im late to this specific vid,but i see a lot of "thats fake" "its programming" etc. I watched your tutorial on doyble strokes. Had it pretty solid after a week. Not up to 290bpm,but not far either. It is real. People are just too inept to understand practice makes perfect. This is an amazing technique. It saves years of trying to perfect single strokes at high tempos. My drumming has elevated in many aspects like coordination, control, creativity, and overall i enjoy playing death metal more because the struggle of developing single strokes at 200bpm and up isnt a factor anymore. Thank you for your knowledge and insight into your techniques playing extreme music. I appreciate it.

@@user-fk6cb9en8v no he’s just using psuedo heel toe. Anyone can do this with triggers, high spring tension, tight drum heads and a little practice. There are people who can hit 240+ with this technique and not even hit 180 with single strokes lol
wonder if you would be able to hear them without the triggers
Matt Dartnell no you won't because I use mesh heads (as the one on electronic kits). But with real heads you will be able to hear every hits. But considering the speed it won't be as loud as if I play straight strokes. Heeltoe isn't a technique aiming ultra power but it helps to increase stamina. But it isn't as simple as a lot of drummers think.
It is the same technique as double strokes with hands but with your feet.
Bingo!
No shit you wouldn't be able to. That's why he's using triggers. Duh.
I used to be semi-okay with heel-toe (completely out of practice atm) - and I used a full heel stroke, as compared to how Thomas plays his doubles - his technique is definitely amazing and super clean.
You can play Heel-toe on an acoustic kit with enough power to make it audible.
you would... but it would not be impressive. Not saying I can do heal toe... but in practice it is kinda worthless in my opinion. You can't really play that without an electronic toy.... might as well use quad pedals.

Feet skills are truly amazing man! However hands tend to get lost in the beat a lot
Yeah ! You're right, that's why I'm practicing a lot !

Dude I swear I see you everywhere, Zach....
Very impressive and much respect for You 😉 Is that possible to reach that volume without triggers? Does without it just sound like Bzzzzzzzzz?
😊
Thank you ! And no above 240 bpm double bass sounds just like a buzz xD
The snare is love.......this what snare in metal should sound , highly cranked , cutsthrough every sound and bubinga giving the low end punch and ass to every hit giving explosive projection
You are totally right my friend ! :D
2x speed hahahahaha
Sounds like Morse code
X0.75
Sounds like a fart
-2 and it becomes a helicopter
Sounds like a minigun
Well done! And nice Heel Toe technique. I am still working on mine. Now, I'm going to help a few people understand a few things about triggers. Triggers are only used for sound enforcement. If he used the same heel / toe tactic with acoustic, all you would hear is a rumble and no ability to discern the sounds of the individual beats as they all become buried within each other. Enter the triggers! Sets tone definition for mostly attack so that you can make out the beats without them being lost within the drums resonance. Drum machines can be programmed to play whatever patterns you want. Triggering systems however cannot play any patterns period. They are for sound reinforcement only.
Thnx Ryan for the explanation I didn't have the energy to write. Finally a guy who has knowledge instead of ignorant comments, 👍😉
Triggering systems can in fact play patterns stop lying
@@MFink-oq5hy You're talking about drum machines. Not trigger modules. If you don't know the difference between a drum machine and a trigger module, then don't waste my time.
That double stroke kicks are so clean 👏👏👏👏
Thank you !!
Your foot doubles are absolutely insane. 🤘🏼👍🏼
Joe Maggi thank you so muuuuch 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I like that it's got a nice amount of frames so you can tell it's not faked (maybe sped up but idk, since your movements look natural I'm assuming you're legit)
Nothing is sped up here ! And thank you for noticing ! 😊
And everything is explained here 😉

Insane drumming. Also great tattoo, one of the coolest gojira albums imo.
Thank you very much !!!
That tattoo was my first, I did it because it was thanks to this DVD that I started playing drums… 🙏🏻
Seeing Space Time and especially the part where the double kick drum starts with the beautiful guitare melody made me understand I had to do it !!
This album has so many bangers ! But my favourite will keep being The Way Of All Flesh 🖤
And if you like the song « The Art Of Dying » I did a cover of it !
Here is the link !
