Top 10 Death Metal Drummers Part 1

- Here's the first half of this video I made. I was adding information from the drummers themselves so this would be more informative for people looking to find new ways to think about their drumming and it became a very long video.
Honorable mention
Any drummer from Death...
With Chris Reifert being No1 of course
@@thedjentleman1662 Christy
@@Tony-fx9ky he may be more technically competent but no Death drummer has had as much taste as Reifert
@@thedjentleman1662 I will revisit the old stuff then. The 'Perserverence' album was my first Death album and I remember, it still blows me away.
@@thedjentleman1662 chris
I honestly believe that Mike Smith, Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinhert, George Kollias , Pete Sandoval and Adrian Erlandsson should be in here.
Gene's not in there!? *leaves*
I agree!!!
Don’t forget Steve Ashium
George Kollias deserves his own video lol
Definitely Hoglan. If he's not on the list, the list is wrong
love how you really put some effort into explaining why different drummers are on this list. looking forward to part 2. (p.s. - steve asheim really deserves to be in the top 5 of this list. of all the death metal drummers from the early days of the genre, his playing has stood out as being more rythmic and better thought out than most)
should have had Mr.Bean/ Rowan Atkinson in it, with his invisible drum kit
Omg yes
Gene Hoglan and Sean Reinert should be there - since they influenced pretty much everyone on this list
Yeah r.i.p Sean Reinert, which I mention only... in passing
I'm not going to watch now that I read gene Hoglan isn't there
Richard Google Account fucking same dude. No mean gene??
MadiUk77 Gene isn’t Death Metal
@@laynevlogz4922 Well, he was Drummer for Death... So he can be considered a Death Metal Drummer.
Docent from Vader who passed away in 2005 was one of the best death metal drummers.
That tightness.
100% agree
and James Stewart (however)
Awww dude yes yes yes. Doc was amazing
Damn straight. Dude is underrated af
Gene Hoglan needs to be in this list
My thoughts exactly, but this is a pretty good list.
This list is incomplete without Gene Hoglan and Thomas Haake
rick anduiza I was waiting for him as well. 💀🥁 the Atomic clock 🤘🏼
Difficult to please everyone and to include everyone. The "perfect list" is the one created by yourself and for yourself. Your list will be either be very similar, completely different or exactly the same. Either way, no one will be incorrect, in my humble opinion (unless you include Rikki Rockett from Poison in this list, then we will exchange words! Ha ha!!). Always remember that opinions will always vary!!
@@jasonallen5318 it says DEATH METAL...and Thomas Haake might be a very skilled & technical drummer, but he doesnt play death metal.
I keep coming back for 2:48 I just love how it still grooves
and where is Marco Pitruzzella??? LORD MARCO!!!
We need the great Lord Marco in here. What he does is beyond human. And I'm not talking about his speed alone. I'm talking about how he achieves to be creative at incredibly high tempos and never writes boring or straight drumlines. He is the perfect blend of technique and musicality and he's being overlooked for many years now
This is dope, I see this channel really taking off
A thought for Sean Reinert: we'll miss you!
Hannes Grossmann ❤️
Romain goulon
Mike Smith of Suffocation
This was absolutely fantastic work, man. Thank you so much.
Look forward to seeing more DM drummers on the next parts. It's super cool that you're appreciating these guys, they're super humans in a sense.
I think Yanic Bercier is a pretty cool drummer too. His isolated drumlines are still complete songs. You can listen to them for hours and not get bored. I also like his signature ride patterns.
He was incredible in Quo Vadis.
Gene Hoglan ??? Alex Marquez??? Doug Bohn??? Mike Smith??? Pete Sandoval??? Don't get me wrong...;)
Bruh? No shit.... but mike smith and pete Sandoval havent been active. Its nothing wrong to see other drummers. The genre is rich with talent.
@@diabolivirtusen-tavares-ea4645 they may not have been so active lately, but they undoubtedly helped kick off some of the techniques that all these drummers rely on. early morbid angel and suffocation (early 90's) was groundbreaking. i guess you cant blame the guy tho, he wasnt even alive back in the day when it all started ;)
@@brapamaldi7666 I think many of us were cheated from seeing either.... sandoval is one of my fav drummers.
Seen angel 3xs, suffocation once ( fortunate to catch frank b4 he retired) ....
im 36... been listening to metal since 93, but didnt get active going to shows till 2002.
MIKE SMITH is the innovator of the death metal blast beat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@tollcollector164 sorry man, but it was around before him. no disrespect to him (i love his contribution and was pretty bummed when he left suffocation), he brought a whole new level of technicality to death metal drumming, but the blast beat can be traced way back to the 60's if you look into it enough. as far as death metal, symphonies of sickness by carcass (which was more death metal than grindcore) came out before human waste (1989 vs 1991) and includes some of the fastest blast beats at the time. ken owen and mick harris were doing some amazing stuff for metal before the 90's rolled around. was a great time in music back then.
Dude, really good video. Informative and I enjoyed learning differing techniques they utilize.
I feel like this video was made just for me, Spencer Prewett and Hannes Grossmann in particular being some of my favorite players! Can't wait for part II🙂
While I'm sure there are gonna be a bunch of "what about this drummer?",
This is a solid List. Mario from Gojira is a beast!!
OMG THATS WHO I WAS FOCUSED ON
Nothing comes close to Mario. And this moron puts him at 8th... lol
Good list !!!! Adam Jarvis (misery Index, Pig Destroyer)is also pretty Sick
Eagerly waiting for part 2....!!!
Not bad dude, not bad... eagerly awaiting Part 2. I really wanna see where you land on that ;)
Nick Barker and Carl-Michael Eide.
Narrator: he played in flimflam, gromgrom, nitricemom, boxbutt...
Everyone: he play fast
Awesome vid, lots of research into the drummers and back grounds..thanks
Fantastic !
I got to see Archspire perform live and they didn’t miss one beat. Phenomenal musicians
Dave McGraw of Cattle Decapitation for the next part, the reason is in the Death Atlas.
The last two albums too, but DA solidifies it.
The reason is all the albums
Dave is amazing but live suck
👍
This is an awesome video, really liked it.
Great picks here
Pretty cool to see Derek Roddy on there.
iiXeno I thought so too. I love Derek, he’s such a cool ass guy from what I’ve seen and very intelligent when it comes to specifying different aspects of his playing.
Good to see Dan Presland in the list. Really is an amazing drummer .
Nice explaining Jay
Very happy to see Hannes Grossman on the list, as well as a few others, but there's one guy I'm really hoping makes the list...Michael Ranne Jr. His work with Through the Eyes of the Dead is just amazing. As a guitarist of 30 years+, I've seen and played with tons of drummers. Something about Michael Ranne Jr stands out.
Jamie Saint Merat....from Ulcerate..awesome drummer
HELL YES!!
Seriously that dude actually shits on several of the guys in this list, has all the same skillsets plus incredible dynamic range, possibly the best in the field imo
Nicely put together informative video. I personally feel this list is incomplete without Gene Hoglan and Thomas Haake, but to each their own.
They are not death metal exactly I guess.
Well Gene played death metal somewhat, but Thomas I wouldn’t even consider death metal at all
You throw a list of legends, any of which if missing you would be called out on, and peoples jimmies are still rustled.
Great list, can't wait to see the remaining 5!
Amazing skill
Thomas Cremier? He has more control over his feet and hands than I have over my whole brain
Shout-out to Paul Mazurkiewicz for doing it 30 years
you can tell in his more recent shows that all those years of playing have definitely worn him down through the multiple decades of high speed blast beats before kick drum triggers were even invented. no tricks, no technology, just pure talent, pent up anger, and debilitating back-pain. lol
@@skimbeeble6195 he's an old man lol. I don't necessarily like the past few albums, but the first 4 are always a go to for some brutal tunes. Respect to the band as whole. Also shout-out to Alex Webster best in the biz.
Right!
Excellent review.
Very good video, I like the narrations!
Alex grind, Tim yeung
Tony Loreno from Malevolent creation and Nile
All my influential drummers in one vídeo!!!
Great top 👍🏻
Diego Hatred Drummer thanks man! Also, great fleshgod drum cover. Shit was killer
Well, I'm gonna learn that finger technique. Explained it so simply and it's so easy to practice (probably insanely hard to get to that point though)
Kollias & Paolini
Spencer Moore of Inferi, Austin Archey from Lorna shore, Jared Klein from Rivers of Nihil, Bryce Butler from every band imaginable and Marco pitruzella also from every band imaginable?
Man... What a group of talented musicians!
Practicing with each and all of your fingers on both hands is really good advice if you ever want to play blast beats.
Richard Christy is my faaaaaaaaaavorite.
God bless
Epicardiectomy drummer Milan should make a list one day, the dude is interesting
I like them all. I can learn from them to help me better myself as a drummer for my band. My band plays their best for me, and so I play my best for them. Teamwork = great sound.
This was actaully a great list! Not just the usual shite people bang on about! I learnt something! Thanks!
Richard Christy should have made the list.
YES
SupaStah01 most definitely!,,!
Totaly overrated drummer
@@christophergalluccio5489 lol
Yes
Well my version of death metal is alot different to yours 🤔
Joe Blogs that might be the case, but I’m trying not to make a generic top death metal drummers list with the OBVIOUS genre defining masters. Some of them are inevitably gonna make the list but I saved a lot of them for honorable mentions, but there are incredible drummers scattered throughout the genre that I’d prefer to shine the light on besides those who’ve been in the light forever. Even then, it’s not like I’m listing total B list drummers. hopefully you’ll find more commonality in the second part of the list if your interested. Thanks for watching and replying though!
Violence Underground Yeah but that’s kinda exactly what you did lol. These guys are all amazing drummers and I’m not saying otherwise, however they’re all the obvious choices from generic techdeath bands (that is if you can even consider Gojira or Ne O dm). I know it’s an unfinished list and all, but this should include people like Vagelis Voyiantzis, Kai Hahto, Kevin Paradis, James Stewart, and Simon Schilling, alongside Roddy and Grossman, if you’re trying to choose non-obvious picks (or if you’re trying to be right lol)
edit: also forgot Lille Gruber damn, that dude is like the undeniable king of “prog” death and absolutely stomps on anyone in the genre
Chandler Brown it’s a balancing act and it’s not perfect. There’s a lot of different things that went into making this list and I redid the order a billion times after weeks of narrowing down a list of ten drummers. Perhaps your right, it’s not like these guys aren’t well known for death metal drummers but I did say they weren’t b list drummers. Not all of these are obvious choices imo but we’re talking about some of the best. There’s just so damn many outside of a top ten that seem like obvious choices to people who enjoy discovering or know a good deal about extreme metal drummers. And I’d argue gojira and Ne O are progressive death metal bands, maybe not so much gojiras last album. There’s always gonna be other drummers people think should be on a top ten list but realistically, it’s all subjective.
@@violenceunderground1318 Mike Smith from suffocation invented the suffo blast! George Torres from dehumanize have got to be on part 2
@@chandlerbrown3172 Ever heard of Morbid Angel, Entombed, Pestilence or Obituary - that's death metal
Great Videos
I looked up all the bands on this vid and checked out their music!!!! Cheers!!!!
My favorite
1. Pete comando sandoval
2. Mick Harris
3. Bill Andrew
4. Derek roddy
5. Flo mounier
6. Steve asheim
7. DD crazy
8. Nick Anderson
9. Donald tardy
10. George kollias
Fahlv Faust I hope some of those guys are in the second part of the list because you listed some total badasses
No Gene Hoglan? Can't take you serious. ;) Cool you mention Nicke Andersson though, very tasty drumming and criminally underrated.
@@shapeshifter-theamorphousg3264 hoglan one of my favorite too...
Your list is better !
Fahiv Faust your top 10 are all definitely up there!,,! in the death metal genre of drummers, all brutal with their style and techniques!,,!
Pete Sandoval???
*Reading comprehension please.*
Yess pete is godfather death metal blastbeat
@@muhammadfariezal-mudzaffar9450 he’s not. That was mick Harris of napalm death but Pete took it forward for sure.
Really glad you got spencer on this list
very well explained video, thank you :)
for example I very like Doc from old Vader...
Personally my vote goes to Nils "Dominator" Fjellström of Dark Funeral.
Its Black Metal but anyway that guy is a beast!
True
well but that the problem he is a top 10 drummer but blackmateal so he isnt in hear D :
Eh, I find Dark Funeral a little tedious
@@quixilvered7779 ua-cam.com/video/Bmc9NFfhx74/v-deo.html
Nils is a Death Metal drummer. He was in Aeon and several other Swedish DM bands before he joined dark funeral.
Sounds like to many to name theirs always someone that's the best n wants to be. But hearing good fast beats is all I need.
Well done! Wise words you said on Gojira- !
the guy from cryptopsy on none so vile - idek who it is but he is one of my favorites from that era. i love how raw the drums were on that and how he uses the snare musically ie varying hits using the edge and center etc. today everything is always completely even so it almost sounds fake. it's fine but i like that abandon, and he was faaaast as fuck.
Chickenbeek Flo Mounier is the name you’re looking for! 🤙🏻
Isn’t Flo still the drummer? And Then You’ll Beg is a great album too.
The black dahlia murders drummer is also super classic and so smooth and clean.. Love it
Which one?
16thChemical shannon or alan, they're both fire
@@darkmotherboard272 I see- Cory and Zach are my favorites.
ur probably talkin shannon lucas who is a kickass drummer. witnessed him live when they played with amon amarth and gorguts
Need (for part 2) Sean Reinert, Bobby Jarzonbeck and Steve Flynn
so happy to see derek roddy on here! was a big influence on me for sure
I cant believe that neither Part 1 or 2 has Steve Shalaty and Steve Asheim...
In my list I would add Sean Reinert, Gene Hoglan and Richard Christy, on my opnion death metal transcend blast beat.
Pete Sandoval fue
Yeah, he should probably do "Top 10 Death drummers of all time" list
Syncopation of trajectory in use of nouver trunnions
I really like Eihar from Cerebral Effusion, and Brutal Dave Billia.
Alex Marquez would have to be in the next part of this list surely?
Patrice Hamelin: Martyr, Gorguts, Beneath the Massacre. where is he???
ohhhh I am angry with this video as well, and he's a really fucking cool dude just like most Canadians and the guys from Ion Dissonance.
Flo Mounier from Cryptopsy
@@256mosh yeah they're all good friends of mine, i love these people, and the Quebec metal community :)
S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R ! Love this !
Derek Rody style is just hitting the right spot at the right time
Andyan Gorust from Deadsquad
Oki Fadilah from Jasad
George kollias & fransesco paoli is my favorite drummer death metal
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer Favorite is correct in U.S.A
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer What do people in U.S.A speak then?
Andyan Gorust from Dead Squad and Oki Fadhlan from Jasad, Indonesia machine brutallity assault, you must know !!!!
Where’s Tim Yeung, George Kollias, Pete Sandoval, John Longstreth, Krzysztof “Doc” Raczkowski, Flo Mounier, Witold “Vitek” Kieltyka? I agree about Derek Roddy. He personally helped out our band when we were just getting started. He’s an amazing drummer & very caring person. Our drummer became really close to Derek. Derek was kind enough to let our drummer borrow his trigger. We used it for our live applications & recordings.
Awesome list that is very well made. Love the information you provide. Maybe retitling it "Top 10 Extreme Metal Drummers" would be more appropriate. Calling all of them Death Metal is a little misleading. Job well done!
Add Lord Marco. Insane freaking fast. Faster than all the mentioned in this video.
Anthony barone is leading the pack of metal drumming this decade
I'm a fan a Anthony Barone and I won't challenge your choice, but I implore you to watch/listen to the drum can footage of the drummer "Darkside" from the band MGDLA, during their performance of Lessons in Futility V. I promise you, his technique is probably unlike anything you've seen. It doesn't seem possible to do the high-hat work he does while never ever altering his snare timing. Performing that technique seemingly thoughtlessly while doing these doubles and triplets on the kicks in my opinion has to be seen to be believed that it's not a drum machine doing that shit.
Anthony barone???fucking distante, not a drummer, just fast, but no more! the kings are kollias and diepold
@@ua81ironparadise62 guessing you don't follow him on anything
My guitar teacher was Ron jarzumbek in San Antonio. Spastic ink and blotted science guitarist. He taught me bass. We used to have him write morbid angel domination tabs on guitar for us! I spelled his name wrong. He is fucking amazing!!!
Cool af! I want to listen to death metal now. 😆🤘
Me sorprende mucho que bateristas como Ken Owen de Carcass, Steve Asheim de Deicide, o Mick Harris de Napalm Death, no sean incluidos, esos bateristas serán muy rápidos, pero no serían nada sin estos pioneros
Andyan gorust from deadsquad reunion and hellcrust.. Indonesian drummer, check it
Oki fadhlan from jasad Indonesian drummer too, check it
Sepakat, kalo untuk kelas death metal lokal belum ada lawan sih dua maestro itu 🤘🤘🤘
That bass drum just FLYING🤯
Talent on parade!!! Nice...
Witold Vitek Kieltyka of old school Decapitated "dead", and Lyle Cooper of "The Faceless" "Alive".
Was looking for someone to mention Vitek. Every time I listen to Winds Of Creation I have to keep reminding myself he was only 14 or 15 when that album was recorded
George Kollias
Derek Roddy
Marco Pitruzella
Lyle Copper
Lord Marco Is By Far The Best Tech Death Metal Drummer Than This Whole List Put Together!!! Much Love,Respect To Lord Marco!!

Fucken aye
Where is Francesco Paoli 😭😭
The drum rolls at 2:49 were disigned by Mick Harris!
since i was born in 1975..my fav drummer still goes to pete sandoval..lombardo..igor cavalera..frost..hellhammer..etc. frm late 80’s to late 90’s...i’m not really into technicals savy..
