I have been working on your first couple of pillars for the past few weeks. My control, technique, and speed have all doubled and then some. It is so simple it seems ridiculous, but it actually worked for me. Thank you for the great advice.
@@hellion5206 Since practicing almost everyday, it has become more natural. I can autopilot it, although I am still working on increasing speed. Small increases in tempo have helped. Thanks for asking.
Loved this video Gabe and definitely going to use these techniques and exercises in my own drumming path. I’ve wanted to work on my double bass for a while but didn’t know how to go about it, and I would get overwhelmed as well. This was a good concise lesson that was very easy to follow and I’m definitely gonna get to work on it!!
Great video. In my experience there is also a 5th pillar: Balance. the way you sit on the throne and the distance and angles of the limbs from the bassdrum, snare etc and having proper posture makes a huge difference.
Hi Gab, I us your teachings and improved my double bass drum speed so much faster, and make more sense now, my balance and endurance increases, now my band mate asked me to slow down… I’m now to fast for them 🤪. Thanks you sooo much . Can wait to see you live in Canada ( maritime) !!!!

3 days later and going strong ,I'm unable to play double kicks fast at the moment but 20 secs on 10 secs of is working and really getting me into gear. Thank you
My new favorite band is Nightwish. First with Jukka Nevalainen and now with Kai Hahto. Watching those guys is amazing and I'm thinking even at my advancing age I want to start learning what makes them sound so good.
Well made video! I have written down all of these exercices and I am motivated to practice on a regular basis until I see progress... which I have been struggling to achieve for many years regarding double bass drumming! See you in 30 days!
You have to be one of my all time favorite drummers, your beats are awesome, the fills, and...well basically everything you do on the drumset is cool. Love your videos fellow midwestern drummer.
This is great stuff. I slowly increase the tempo over 10 minutes but as soon as i start losing control I knock it back down even though I really just want to play fast lol. I don’t want get into bad habits and bad technique
Is 16th notes at 155 any good? I've been following this guide for a week. I started with 130bpm and got to 155 so far. I recommend following Gabe's guide, it helps lots. Thank you so much for your insight Gabe!
@@tObito687 I sort of stopped practicing every day because of school and getting sick. I still get up to around 160ish with good technique and even playing.
7:15 Sounds just like what Danny Carey does in a Tool song. Can’t remember the name of it. This is great learning material. Really solid training regimen!
if any of you plan on triggering your kicks at some point, you’re gonna want very high spring tension on your pedals, and your beater head tuned extremely tight (stuff it with blankets and use kick pads to eliminate the acoustic sound for recording). i prefer using flat heavy beaters but it’s all preference at that point
It's funny that I remember things like that about 22 years ago watching Virgil Donati's VHS, when I was starting to practice. I've never been very dedicated, but it's great to see the evolution of my studies. Congratulations on the video and thank you so much for sharing!
Whats your opinion on heel-toe vs ankle technique, and can you play this more complex rhymthms with heel toe because it becomes double stroke which would be hard on these more complex patterns.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. It sounds so good. Can you please tell me which high-hat you are using? I have one and my double pedals don't feel comfortable.
Hopefully this helps comment helps someone who has been scrolling through videos forever trying to learn double kick- I'm someone learning to drum that's turned off by a lot of these videos feeling like I'm watching fitness instructors or drop shippers who happens to drum sell me courses while going through the motions with exercises. I think a lot of these videos miss the little things, like technique and pedal set-up. Any video can give exercises. It wasn't as much the lessons in this video, but the constant close-ups that finally made me realize almost all the drummers I've watched choke down on their peddles the faster they play. Foot is higher on the peddle on 1/4 and 1/8th notes, and moves down a bit on the 16th notes. I wish just one video pointed this out, but I finally got some consistent speed realizing this and tuning my peddle beaters and tension. That right there is literally half the battle. Once you get that you can do exercises until you can't do them anymore.
I would love to know your thoughts on balancing on the drum set. I notice you are burying the beater when playing quarter and eighth notes, and less so as speed necessitates. Do you consciously think about playing into or off of the bass drum head to help with balance. I sometimes feel like I'm trying to ride a bicycle and fing my weight drifting from one part of the stool to the other, which really messes up my playing, and I end up trying to play heel down to get balanced again.
Very cool video my friend. 👍 I found it very insightful even though I've been playing a double kick for approximately 40 years now. I agree with you in every way. It's best to start slow as well as working on technique and as you practice, the speed will start to come naturally. Also, to help prevent calf fatigue and cramping, make sure to adjust your throne to a height that causes the least amount of fatigue in general. It may take a while to find that sweet spot but once you do, you'll find that you are able to play for much longer than you may have thought. My thrown has a mark, so I know exactly where to set it now. Keep up the good work. 🙂👍🙏🙏🙏
Anything related to the kick is turning into the biggest problem I'm having learning drums. There's so much physicality in single and double kick that I start off okay at the beginning of practice and by the end it feels like I can't kick with any power or have any note control. Which just means more practice. And now I have a lot more things to practice in terms of double kick!

Thank you for taking the time making such an informative and amazingly produced video. I can honestly say that if I went 100% into educational videos, they would look like this (except the falling off the throne part lol;) I have a gig coming up where I need to play 16ths at 170 and since I hardly ever play constant running double bass anymore I'm at about 130 pretty cleanly. But now I have a goal. Been trying to get my feet to adjust to the different technique needed by working on Alex Rudinger's practice routine. I realized I know how to do it with my right foot already since I do a lot of fast RF work in my Maiden tribute. Now it's training my brain and strengthening my left foot to do the same. I'll be working from your exercises as well and look forward to checking out your other vids. Keep up the great work!
I don't know you. But probably you are using your leg instead of your ankle. Play at 30bpm each leg separately and increase. I was doing exactly like you, 2 weeks playing like this I was able to play 100 BPM 16th notes
Hi, great vid. I have one Question: While practicing the ankle technique, do I have to hold my leg/foot up with my thighmuscles? Or how does this work exactly?
The muscle development one, the one you called "Subdivision ladder" is my goto warmup before rehearsal with my band. I alternate one ladder with my hands around the kit and then one with my feet. I do add 32nd notes after the 16th note triplets. Five minutes at 60bpm, then 70, 80 and all the way up to 120. I love it because it gets my feet to wake up and my hands used to go around the kit instead of stuck at the snare.
As a beginner this just completely overwhelmed me. The information was clear, however it was delivered so fast by the time I had got the first bit of information into my mind brain, the next part was already being played/discussed. Slow the method down, in your mind this is Childs play that I doubt you even need to think about it. More time spent demonstrating the incremental difficulties would of really helped. And no I'm not gonna move to my PC/Laptop every 15 seconds to rewind the micro demonstration! Hope the feedback from a new drummer helps.
Question: is it normal that sometimes you have a bit of a tempo setback? Meaning you can't reach the tempos that you could before? What do you do in this situation: stick to the schedule or take some time off practicing?
3:29 At about this point I have a horrible problem with my feet syncing up with each other and I end up hitting the bass with both feet instead of one at a time.
hi Gabe! thank you for sharing. i ound this advices/exercises really helpful/ let me ask you one thing - would you recommend to buy those Pearl double-pedal you are playing in this video? i am thinking to buy it for some time but couldnt decide yet, having no feedback from the real users. thanks. appreciate

How do you make your kick drum sound like that? Is it a certain way you mic it or do you have a trigger?
Great video btw, good lessons.
I don't even play music, let alone have rhythm brain to play drum,
but still finish the video. Good content
