I am currently in graduate school with Arizona State University and am participating in a research class. I am currently focusing on motivating gifted learners who appear unmotivated or disengaged in instruction. The experiences of the young boy that you shared helped me to understand signs to look for when gifted learners are in the beginning stages of disengaging from school. It was really interesting to listen to how this affected the boy socially and emotionally and then how his behavior changed once he was formally identified as gifted and his energy was being channeled towards productive work. For me, this highlighted the importance of catering to the social-emotional needs of all gifted learners as some strategies will work for some, while it won’t for others, and continuing to research this issue.
Thank you. I am an 48 year old finally learning why I am not a "succes" and performing at the level of my peers. (Found out I am gifted in 2020). When you talked about 'Poor Polly' you were talking about me 😢.
I was like passive Paul. School let me down, Teachers let me down. Emotionally neglected because there wasn't someone also Hypersensitive emotionally to help me. I needed art classes, I needed to be in the small Christian school, ACE, I needed to do ballet, I needed to learn Music Theory and play the piano, flute and violin. I needed singing lessons. I needed to sing in a choir from age 7, not age 14. I needed acting classes. I needed a brilliant Tutor to teach me Master Maths. All these were there and available, yet my voice was never heard.
a B is not failing lol... but i do remember when i merely thot i might get a B , i had a complete breakdown crying.... i felt like a total failure.... i had no sense of worth other than the outcomes i got in life.... especially grades
I have _not_ had a decent class since year six. Which was when I was in my school's OC class. Now I'm in high school, half the classes are so ridiculously boring, and none of the teachers care. Science is the worst for this. In year 7 maths, I was ignored by my teacher entirely after she gave me a year 10 maths textbook and just said "learn this". Gifted underachivers... woo. Anyway I'm using this video as the speech we have to analyse for english or whatever, perhaps my teacher will get the hint.
@@boxy9000 We didn't do a speech, we just analysed it and submitted that - I honestly don't remember how it went, I think she just said some generic 'good job' comment

No, it's about top 2%. 96% percentile and up. Please study up before you start spouting off about imaginary things like participation trophies. Really, go try to web search up an image of one. You won't find one. And even if you did, ask yourself.. who was handing them out? Uh-oh. Don't let that explode your brain. Lol.
@@legalfictionnaturalfact3969 do you really think that around 1 in 25 people in life is gifted/extraordiary. Please think before you blindly accept a statistic. Do you understand the word: extra + ordinary. 1 in 25 is very ordinary.
@@dalelane1948 uh, sweetheart, calm down. get your snuggy and take a breath. lol. this is exactly what the gifted program states as it's cutoff. 96th percentile. i was in it. i was told by the people who do the testing. if you have questions about that, go ask them.
Underachievers in what standars?? Success is having 3 rented houses and sail a boat for the rest of your life and leave the dog race !! or just simple go fishing and be happy! lmao

My supervised Mensa IQ score was in the 'High Average' range, and I was placed in remedial sets at school.

Wow to Unisa's lineup. Harry and Laurence were great
Gifted kids are twice exceptional. Thats to be expected.
Not at all it’s a probability.
We had a sick sam in class. Poor misunderstood guy

Lol. Most teachers spend so much time around kids they become quite childish themselves.
How did your speech go?

@@boxy9000 Thanks.
Skipped a few years; it's much better this year.
My child was a mix of the both of the boys and gifted, so I knew right away that they were😂
Love it!
I loved this one too Laurence! Jordan is a great speaker
I think in alot of ways im an under achiever, but in other ways im sort of an over achieviever, so i think total im neutral i guess.
I was the class clown or maybe unpolished diamond hehe

Hello what is Mensa?? Is that a group?
It's a society for high-IQ people.
"Who's the dumbest person in Mensa?"
Mensa is the world's oldest and largest organisation for people with high IQ. The cut off for entry is 98th percentile.
🙏🥰
Top 10% = gifted? This is why all kids these days get participation awards instead of 1st 2nd and 3rd place medals. Gifted is more like the top 0.1%.
2% is probably more accurate
