I heard that Russian is one of the best languages to learn especially if you're into tech and the internet because half of the stuff on the net (especially dark web) is in Russian!
"The more languages you know, the more people you are" I really agree with this quote, because language is a means of connecting to communicate. Therefore, the more languages know will make it easier for living things to relate to fellow living beings in all corners of the world.

Well... it was interesting... I think that learning a language is not a ONE way thing and you need to learn a little of this and a little bit of that. I have been teaching for more than 20 years and I got some great results... but there is just a simple fact that people should understand... you need to learn some grammar and understand how the language is structured if you want to learn it. The vocabulary is just a question of being able to remember the words. Then after will also come the way to pronounce... and French is a challenging language! But if you put yourself into it... everything is possible!!!
You have to learn grammar but you don’t have to learn it day one to learn simple frases. I think that’s the point he’s trying to make. Dive in and worry about the rest later 🤗
From my point of view, there are some psychological problems of learning the second, third and so on languages, because a person must overcome the patterns of his own mother tongue, including pronunciation of course. I think this is the main problem. Maybe I'm wrong ..
Every native speaker thinks their language is hard. But how hard it is to learn a language depends how similar it is to your native language. Grammar is so important especially when the language is very dissimilar to yours like I’m learning Czech. You’re right you can miss half the meaning of a sentence of le.g language if you you don’t know how to decline the nouns and pronouns. You can rite learn phrases but depending on the type of learner you are.
"Скільки мов ти знаешь - стільки разів ти людина" this quote standing in my college, in my classroom for learning English! And now it's so pleasure to hear it from him!
A few months ago I started to learn german and for a couple of months I didn't know which day of the week i was living in till I got to learn it in german. Considering the lockdown I can assure to anyone that I didn't have the closest idea what day I was living because I didn't have to know whatsoever

We all can be like him. Some people may have a better ear or be more talented than others, but as he said this is not about perfection, it is about communication. If you put passion and work into a language, soon enough you will learn it. I wish you a happy language learning! I am Japanese, and learning English process is sometimes hard and I feel frustrated as to why I cannot speak it smoothly after years of study😢 but this video reminds me of the joys of language learning! Sometimes I feel as if I could go to a different world just by studying English in my daily life😊
I did French at school. Quickly picked up Spanish before travelling to Europe, found that I could read about 90% of Danish newspapers after about three weeks. Third trip to Europe is being planned. Also was able to get a handle on Basque. All of this in my sixties.
Conor McCormack in København, one is surrounded by Danish. Once one has a handle on such words as på og til, the rest is almost English. I cannot speak or understand it, for it has consonants not used in English b d g r sk, for example. Æ ø y are found in French and German. It's called immersion, but some study of grammar and vocabulary are necessary.
Besides my mother tongue, I have a degree in English, am fluent in Spanish and am currently learning German. I can also understand Portugese and French. I love languages and I soooooo agree on making the mistakes. I tell it to my students all the time.

Yeah and don't forget; Writing is VERY important, it helps you to memorize. And don't worry for french it's a very simple language, tell ur self that when you'll learn french you can easly learn italian or spanish ;) Hope it helps =)

I really enjoyed this presentation. As a language teacher for more than 10 years, I have reflected many times on why I was so interested in learning the languages that I have learned, and how I could instill that interest into my students. This presentation contains many excellent ideas and points that all make complete sense. I would recommend this video to anyone who feels apprehensive about learning a new language.
Let's be honest... If you have motivation to really study everyday, you can learn a new language. It doesnt matter if it's fun or not, it depends on how dedicated you are. I believe that most people keep looking for magic in language learning, but this doesnt happen. If you can have fun, great! But you'll always need dedication!!!
This is a great talk! I dedicate my channel to talking about languages and language-learning and I love watching talks like this. I don't speak 20 languages but I can converse in four! I agree with what he said and this isn't the first time I've heard this. I've heard the same advice from other successful polyglots, so I can tell you that what he said works for a lot of people. More people need to see this
I moved to study in Turkey, I have been here for a month and the constant need to learn the language brought me to here (although I already speak 3 languages) He gave me the courage to learn harder, thank you TED
Same boat, but I'm learning Italian. By the way, I recommend making sure to pronounce the words a lot, because then you'll remember them. Recently I've gotten a lot better just from that.
Kaelei Olson my advice is to actually use the words you learn frequently. Even when talking to your friends try to form sentences and call certain objects by their name in that language if you know that word. I was able to learn 200 Japanese words and about the same amount of kanji in a month and a half just by doing that. Good luck :)
I am at pre-intermediate English level and I was wonder that I understood almost everything from this video. This is amazing. Also enjoed the sentence at the end in Ukrainian because I am from Ukraine ^_^ Thanks a lot, hope this video would help me and other to learn better and get such a great experience as I had
I like him; his voice is relaxing. He speaks without exaggerating his enunciation and pronunciation. I totally agree with Youlden's shortcuts to language learning and the golden rules.
Very true. My mother who never went to school speaks nine Ghanaian languages and English. I speak seven languages including English and French. My small country Ghana has over 25 different languages because there are so many ethnicities. I learned three languages simply by living next door to native speakers and interacting with them.
A.S. 1 You can if you put in the effort. If you have Alliance Francais in your country, they may run French language courses. Or you can learn online. Use Rosetta Stone app. which is really rich in content. Give it time and practice regularly.
I don't really have any of those problems he is talking about and I wasn't planning on watching this to the end... I just enjoyed his way of speaking so much :)
He's right by saying make your learning fun. I started learning how to curse in French and I used it a lot with family and friends even though they had no idea what I was saying to them.
I can speak fluently 4 languages and can't possibly learn anymore, and can't imagine how anyone can realistically claim to speak more than that. In my case it's a continuous challenge to keep all of them at a decent level. Our brain in this regard is like a muscle that needs regular intensive exercise to KEEP each language. It is also like a vessel with a limited capacity shared by languages you speak. Multilingual people would understand what I mean.
Both of your points have scientific evidence against them, it's been show that we don't forget things that the memories and connections just get weak, and they have found no evidence of a limit to the amount of knowledge you can learn.
John Wick I speak 5 fluently. I can tell u why. My mother tongue is Czech (1. Czech). I was born and grew up in Switzerland (2. Swiss-german). In Swiss schools you are thought in german (3. German). At the age of 14 I started to binge english UA-camrs/series and made lots of english speaking friends (4. English). In Switzerland french is obligatory from the age of 11. I’m now 19 years old. I know live in Paris since a month and will for 5 more (5. French). There you go. I rly rly wanna learn more languages; Currently learning Chinese. It also seems impossible to me but Im not gonna give up
The title is a bit of click bait. It is not about how to learn any language easily, but techniques to make learning more engaging and effective which is not the same thing. As someone involved in languages, I can say that individual aptitude varies greatly and highly influences how much one progresses. Most languages require a considerable commitment to get to an intermediate level of communication.
I love learning languages and yet I tend to fail. I'm currently teaching myself Japanese and started Russian a few days ago. People, learn languages! When I started understanding Japanese songs without problem I cried like a baby because I was so happy (and still am). I want everybody to have these kinds of moments. And hey, if you can't find someone to be in friendly competition with... race against yourself, it works! Whenever you think "I should be studying right now..." DO IT!!
This really inspired me. I'm a current monolinguest learning Russian,Swedish,Spanish and Portugese. Yes I do realise learning 4 languages at once is a challenge. But I have the freedom to learn it whenever and however I want. At school you're forced to learn a language which you might not be interested in and you go over useless stuff again and again. I have bought a specific notebook for each language and I study for at least 30min a day. It is very satisfying to see how many pages I have done. My motivation? the freedom of when you are fluent. I look at people who are bilingual and see them speak to others, it's amazing. Plus I just love being able to travel the world being able to speak to the locals.
If I may suggest, try to learn the romance languages first since you are already taking on Spanish and Portuguese. Adding french and Italian will be like value-add to what you already have. Bonne chance!
I'm so glad I watched this video, my previous experience with a TED Talk was more of a product than educational and it's made me wary of clicking on the videos. I'm trying to learn Finnish and while some of these rules are great for languages that are more popular, it's hard to find the resources and media needed to gain experience in that language. I've put a Finnish option on my computer and I follow Finnish tags on social media (namely suomipaskaa lol)but as far as music and video, that's going to be a bit harder to run into. I appreciate the video and your time immensely, it's given me some things to mull over and think about while on my own polyglot adventure. Hyvää päivää!
+ use small free periods of time to learn the language (about 30 min daily) eg in train, waiting, ... or in the Moring you could listen to radio in the targeted language + learn songs + videos/ Netflix with subtitle 1. life language: sing in it, dream in it, ... 2. Make mistakes: only way to learn it 3. make it fun eg about grammar (entertaining), try get others in it -> “ the more languages you know the more people you are “
I speak three languages (Spanish, Basque/Euskera and English) and I am a teenager and I can confirm it's very easy. The most difficult one was the basque, because it's almost an independent language, but it wasn't that hard, really. Recently, I started learning japanese, and it's not that difficult, at least not as it seems. I know a pair of phrases and words already. Of course, I have a lot to learn, but I have the choice to learn what I like, and I won't fail myself. (My mother language is spanish) *EDIT:*I forgot to mention It, I have a friend who talks like seven languages, like german, french, spanish, basque, english, japanese... So guys, is not that difficult :) If I have wrote wrong any expression, let me know, please! ^^
Very insightful. I've been studying German on and off for about a year, and probably couldn't hold a basic conversation, and if I could then I wouldn't be understandable. My biggest problem is probably keeping things relevant. This really helped, let's see how I'm doing in a month or two!

I'm Brazilian and learned English by playing online games with Americans in FPS servers. This was when I was around 12 years old. It was fast, quick and easy. Now, at 24, I'm trying to learn Russian and I was about to drop out of the course. This video inspired me to keep on pushing and try to find the joy of learning this beautiful language once again. Thank you!
Hey Matthew :) that's a pretty cool talk and inspiring. I'm actually on the way to learn my fourth language and I can say that it has been one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done in life. Will start following you guys on Social Media.
When it comes to languages, some polyglots like Moses McCormick & Steve Kaufmann don't have perfect pronunciation in all the languages they speak. The main focus is to be able to speak and be understood by native speakers.
Exactly. I've heard Steve K speak French and I cringe. And considering he has spoken French for a number of years I'm a bit surprised that he doesn't sound better. However, in his defense, he can be understood but it does sound like he's butchering the language. :)
Learning to read & white a language fluently can be mastered in school but when it comes to speaking, some people will show their foreign accents. They need to make a conscious effort to get a language tutor to tone-down or eliminate some of their foreign accents. Just as an example a man Gregory Rivers from Australia who lived in Hong Kong for over 20 years. He worked mostly as an actor in Cantonese for TVB. He married a local Chinese, speaks, read & write in Chinese as well as in English. Being a TV actor he had to read scripts in Chinese and learned many characters along the way. When he first landed in Hong Kong, his Cantonese was understandable but not as fluent. Listening to his TV interviews in Cantonese you can't really tell him from a native-speaker with many local expressions in his speech. Compared to someone born in Hong Kong or a person who moved to the city as a young child, there is definitely a hint of foreign accent since he relocated in his early 20s.
shk00design Yes, agreed, but like you said, a person has to make a conscious effort to find a tutor, or even travel to the country and spend some time there. I am learning French and Dutch right now but I plan on spending next summer in both countries. One month in the south of France and one month immersed in Dutch in the Netherlands. Me and my boys will be going. And heck, I'll bet you if I take a trip up to Paris after my time in the South the Parisians will laugh at my southern accent. LOL. I'll say this. I do admire all of these people for learning languages. There something amazing that happens when you learn a new language. Beyond that fact that your brain grows larger, it just happens to be a lot of fun. So on this, we who call ourselves Bilingual, Trilingual, or beyond, have much larger brains that the average person walking around and this has been scientifically proven. And this gives us one up on everyone else.
@@shk00design I see nothing wrong with a slight accent when someone speaks. For example Germans and Swedes learn English at 5 years old until adults and still have an accent but their pronunciation is perfect and that's what matters, unlike someone from China who say words like aluminum like aruminum and thousand like wousand. That's when its butchering the language and seriously needs practicing but idk if you can change that.
Learning languages is a great hobby to have, its challenging but very rewarding, I did very bad in school and really only focused on English when I was there. I went 5 years after school thinking I will never speak another language and then I decided to learn German when I went to zurich, I learnt it within a year and I can now hold a conversation, I'm now learning Portuguese at a course and met a lot of like minded people. My memory and learning strategy's have got better aswell.
@@jc.nidzzzz focus on the verbs first, and der, die, and das also. Try and learn atleast 30 nouns for each gender and if your in conversation and don't know the gender off a noun then ask but sometimes you can get away with saying "d" if your not able to ask. German has alot of words that's in English you need 2 words too a full sentence to explain. Learning those gives a good impression. Try and learn a little bit each day and repeat what you learnt in the past so you don't forget anything. It helps to have a friend who speaks German to ask. You can get very creative with German once you know the basics but it's always good to ask a German if it's something that is correct to say. But yea if you are starting from scratch learn the verbs first and the structure of ich,du,er/sie/es,ihr,wir,Sie In formal situations or When speaking to someone who is older or higher in the hiarchy address them with Sie not du (sir/madem not you)

The way I remember vocabulary in a Hungarian, which I'm learning now, is to try and associate a situation or memory to that word - usually something to do with how or where I first learnt that word, so whenever I hear it I don't think of the English translation but rather that one specific memory related to it. It helps with listening as hearing a word then translating it into English takes to long and isn't effective due to how fast normal speech is, the listening part of a language has always been the part that I have struggled with but now I'm starting to break through and finally starting to think in Hungarian, I hope someone can find this method useful (I'm not the first to use it nor recommend it, and I actually got it from a comment on a TedTalk about learning languages).
That's a good idea. I am from Hungary, and I would like to seize the opportunity to thank you for your efforts in learning our language. It is considered one of the most difficult languages of the world. 🙂

Alexandr Martynov actually, not. It means that with every single language you learn you get the same amount of different visions of life which feels like you have this number of personalities in yourself who can think one thing in all these different ways.
I'm making fun of my suffering when i don't know the best way to put something in my sentence. Have to say it's quite working beside my decreasing confidence to speak with anybody every day
Learn the basics then move to the real fun content, there you will experience more unknown grammar rules, learn some, forget others but dont get too stuck on it, keep going. It's bloody hard in the beginning but the content, your fluency and understanding keep getting better, even if you learnt one word a day.
i never understood why people strive for perfection learning another language then turn around, and butcher their own. doesnt even dawn on them nobody speaks any language perfectly, all the time.

I speak English, Japanese and French to a decent fluency; German and Indonesian I studied in High School and can understand when spoken to, but can’t really speak; and I’ve never had a lesson in Spanish, but can read and understand about 70% of what’s going on. I’m an English teacher in Japan, and I’m always saying how “I don’t speak any language, I just speak words.” My brain is like alphabet soup. There’s stuff floating around, but not much of it makes sense,
tips presented here: learn regularly fit language learning in your daily routines do language immersion (radio when you have breakfast, movies with subtitles at night) live in that language (read, speak, dream, write in the language you are learning) be free to make mistakes make it fun so you can stay motivated get other people involved and get a friendly competition focus on what you need - even native speakers don't know every word in the dictionary
"Talk to a man in a language he understands, and you'll be speaking to his mind. Talk to a man in his native language, and you'll be speaking to his heart." - Not sure who the source is, but I think it's an old Japanese proverb...
I’m a native English speaker from England, (North-West). Swedish is so similar and easy to learn for beginners, while also having a 10m population in Sweden, so I have reasons.
Shortcut #1 - Look for similarities to your language (help you recognize patterns & understand meaning)
Shortcut #2 - Keep it simple
Shortcut #3 - Keep it relevant to your situation and needs.
Shortcut #4 - Use 30 minutes study time a day or smaller periods more regularly
Shortcut #5 - Listen to Radio, Watch Movies with English subtitles
Rule 1) Live the language, own the language
Rule 2) Make plenty of mistakes
Rule 3) Make it fun. Friendly competition is good

Well... it was interesting...
Hey ! Vincent. I follow your videos :) Haha !
You have to learn grammar but you don’t have to learn it day one to learn simple frases. I think that’s the point he’s trying to make. Dive in and worry about the rest later 🤗
You dont just adopt the language easily ,it takes time for you to actually speak out the languange you're trying to learn

Hows the Spanish coming along?
I did French at school. Quickly picked up Spanish before travelling to Europe, found that I could read about 90% of Danish newspapers after about three weeks. Third trip to Europe is being planned. Also was able to get a handle on Basque. All of this in my sixties.
Christopher Ellis how did you learn danish so quickly?
Conor McCormack in København, one is surrounded by Danish. Once one has a handle on such words as på og til, the rest is almost English. I cannot speak or understand it, for it has consonants not used in English b d g r sk, for example. Æ ø y are found in French and German. It's called immersion, but some study of grammar and vocabulary are necessary.

Kaelei Olson my advice is to actually use the words you learn frequently.
I get you. The biggest problem I have is not to swap words or syntax from one language to another.

I bet you failed miserably.
If I may suggest, try to learn the romance languages first since you are already taking on Spanish and Portuguese. Adding french and Italian will be like value-add to what you already have. Bonne chance!
well?
One of the key points of learning another language is how you will you treat other people who are learning yours.
I'm so glad I watched this video, my previous experience with a TED Talk was more of a product than educational and it's made me wary of clicking on the videos.

Yes, agreed, but like you said, a person has to make a conscious effort to find a tutor, or even travel to the country and spend some time there.
Hey I want to learn German too.
I would love to hear some tips from you. :)
But yea if you are starting from scratch learn the verbs first and the structure of ich,du,er/sie/es,ihr,wir,Sie
In formal situations or When speaking to someone who is older or higher in the hiarchy address them with Sie not du (sir/madem not you)
I wrote that a bit scattered and unordelly but I hope it helps you atleast a little
@@ASTralOasis-333 Thank you so much Oliver, it indeed helped me. I will use your tips. Let me search for German friends though.
You helped a lot, Danke! :)
@@ASTralOasis-333 but Most differences between english and German you've found. Concentrate on Words that are only slight different: Bus and bus, Licht and light. They are spoken different but written similarly.
This was encouraging. I am trying to learn a second language. It’s not been easy but I know I can do it!
I just love this presentation so much and it really hits every point right on the head. Im learning spanish currently and am doing everything that was recommended here. It helped reassure me that i am on the right path. I hope all are well on your ways in your respective language journeys!
Update?
Can you speak Spanish now? Are u fluent?
Hey guys! Yes my Spanish is probably around a C1 level and I'm even dating a Mexican girl! Thanks for the interest!!
@@tjb8158 thanks for the update! All the best
I'm a student. I have been leaning English for 3 years ago. I try my best with it. Thank you for this video
I lived in United States, and I have this really cool Russian co-worker and we have been teaching eachother Russian and English.
I am a Laotion American living in america. Currently I only speak English, not Lao which is technically my native language and I am now trying to learn it! I've always felt kind of ashamed of not speaking my native language and with no one to teach me today I am going to try to learn Lao. I wish anyone who has had the same experience luck 😀
Hey can you help me in learning English i am from India and my native language is hindi
@@june.w.1288 Hungarian is very difficult, but that is why I like it. I'm learning German as well and I get bored because it is too similar to English so Hungarian is a really nice challenge.
@@szinpad_kezedet that's nice. I speak German too, and currently I am learning Italian. I love learning languages too. Do you know the channel Easy German? That is on UA-cam and they always discuss very interesting topics.
Ironically, I need subtitles in order to know what he is saying.
Didn't you understand anything ?
How is your English today ?
Do you know English now?
Me too! Only cause the microphone isn't very loud.
He has a strong accent, and the sound is very low, besides not everyone can listen to this in a quiet, peaceful environment. For example if someone has little children who are yelling a lot, or if someone is in a bus, a lot of passangers chatting around him/her... Guys, have some empathy and understanding!
Language learning is brain improvement for me , if we know more languages it is mean more perspective we can look, go out to the routine of your life. it is mean also learn another culture and therefore realize your culture more. Thanks for nice videos.
Languajes are my pasión since i was a young Guy., definetly i want to keep improving my french and German and now with thé internet it's easier . Thé key Is practice every day great vídeo full motivation thanks.👏👏
In Ukrainian it means more like: the more languages you know the better human you are.
Alexandr Martynov shut up
Alexandr Martynov actually, not. It means that with every single language you learn you get the same amount of different visions of life which feels like you have this number of personalities in yourself who can think one thing in all these different ways.
there's no ukranian language, it's just screwed russian
Oleg Ushakov Russian is screwed up, because of Bulgarian influence. Probably old-Russian sounded more like Belarusian and/or Ukrainian.
Aris кто дебил?)
This has motivated me even more to continue my Slovenian language learning
Exselent expositione, i´m putting on practique the advice numbe 3: cometing mistakes. Than u matthe
Bravo ! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
"make grammar fun" um, TELL US HOW lol
motivation is the key, keep in your mind the reason why you're studying that language...remember your goals
think of grammar as a series of elements and just playing around with it
I'm making fun of my suffering when i don't know the best way to put something in my sentence. Have to say it's quite working beside my decreasing confidence to speak with anybody every day
Lmao yesss!
Learn the basics then move to the real fun content, there you will experience more unknown grammar rules, learn some, forget others but dont get too stuck on it, keep going. It's bloody hard in the beginning but the content, your fluency and understanding keep getting better, even if you learnt one word a day.
One of the reasons I wanted to become a polyglot is because I feel that language is a beautiful way to connect with people.
5:57 Weebs: Don't do that.... don't give me hope.

Lmaooo 😭😭😭
Way too close lol. I'm trying to learn Japanese, hoping that I can do it well.
i never understood why people strive for perfection learning another language
then turn around, and butcher their own.
doesnt even dawn on them nobody speaks any language perfectly, all the time.

There’s stuff floating around, but not much of it makes sense,
yooo big congrats on learning indonesian, its rare to find people who are willing to learn our language eheheh :))
such a cool way to see it haha. i will only intent to spice up my alphabet soup from now on :))
I want to learn English can you help me
tips presented here:
learn regularly
fit language learning in your daily routines
do language immersion (radio when you have breakfast, movies with subtitles at night)
live in that language (read, speak, dream, write in the language you are learning)
be free to make mistakes
make it fun so you can stay motivated
get other people involved and get a friendly competition
focus on what you need - even native speakers don't know every word in the dictionary
In short he says : make mistakes and live the language if you want to learn.
It was so inspiring, especially when I heard Ukrainian 😍
Him: Languages are beautiful!
Him earlier: *_D I E_*
"Talk to a man in a language he understands, and you'll be speaking to his mind. Talk to a man in his native language, and you'll be speaking to his heart." - Not sure who the source is, but I think it's an old Japanese proverb...
it's from nelson mandela
I’m a native English speaker from England, (North-West).
Swedish is so similar and easy to learn for beginners, while also having a 10m population in Sweden, so I have reasons.
