I'd watched quite a few of these DRUMEO videos, and normally people listen to the whole track, maybe more than once, and even make a couple of takes. Chad just goes into it in like the third measure. Insane!!! Just gets the groove and goes for it! No second take... amazing!

The thing about Chad's insane musicality is that he listens a lot to the rhythym patterns of the vocal parts. Go find any RHCP live perfo and you'll see that he is always matching and emphasizing Kiedis' vocal rhythmic patterns.
Chad has set a new standard for this Drumeo challenge. Normally the person listens to it once or twice thru, writes their part, then does a couple takes to play their rendition. Him doing it so well on the first pass, first time hearing the drum less track.... AWESOME!
you can tell he's not just a talented drummer within the context of RHCP, but also as a session musician too. Makes sense that he picked it up so quickly, he seems to be a very versatile musician.
It never stops amazing me how some drummers can just lock into a rhythm and even can accurately guess the changes. So much respect for Chad. 🤘 OHH YUUUR!

It’s easy the more you do it. I spent years playing jazz, swing, and rock and really you can just hop in and ride the bike anytime with any band if you’re talented.
the way he smiles right before he starts playing is like he’s thinking “oh, I know this one…”. Pretty sure he foreshadowed with the “I’m not telling you if I know it, I’m just gonna play it” bit.
You know RHCP have been improvising jams live for like 30 years. That's on top of Chad being a session drummer for countless bands and even non-rock artists. This dude knows how to improv well, I have no doubt he's never heard the song and just nailed it the first listen. 30 seconds to mars don't exactly have the most complicated song structure, so that helped too.
I think it just shows that Chad has an developed an amazing feel for music throughout all those years of playing music and jamming along with his band mates. He seems to know by instinct when there's another part coming up, etc. His whole video series on Drumeo is so entertaining to watch. One of my all time favourite drummers. He might not be the most flashy drummer but I absolutely love his playing style.
It's the fact that he's so quick to adapt to something he's never heard before. The way he calls it when to start drumming again because of the subtle volume increase just before the final chorus.
This video of Chad just speaks to his inherent musical ability. The fact that he can not only just start playing along without knowing the song, and can anticipate HOW and WHERE the song is going to go next, shows how much he understands how to properly compose a song.
I watch this clip every time it comes up or someone does a reaction.. and the face you make midway through just grinning is what makes it the best. What a cool dude and a great video
Chad Smith is actually underrated. Sure he’s very well known for what he’s done. He’s not a metal drummer but the dude has major chops. He has this certain feel to his playing that dude could practically play anything with tribal feeling. Another prime example of this kind of skill is with drummer Stephen Perkins.
I seen them with Babymetal supporting, and they done the Judas Priest song 'Painkiller' with Chad on drums. The dude obviously can play metal. Thank you for nailing the time signature! I thought it was in 6/8 immediately just from the phrasing of the vocals, but I can see how it would make sense to a percussionist as 3 + 3.
This is absolutely 6/8. Zero doubt about it. It really doesn't matter unless you're notating it but the difference is the feel. If it feels 1 duh-duh, 2 duh-duh etc it's in 6/8. A friend of mine once said, if it feels like a song of bunchnod olf Germans would be singing in a bar swinging their beer mugs, it's 6/8. Source: music degree, arranger, producer, professional musician, music nerd. That said, even some composers are wrong about the difference. They think their song is in 3/4. Nope, it's in 6/8...but who cares? It's still aesome lol

Well, Samus, I can say that I have a whole other respect for you after watching your Drumeo video doing Zepplin, amazing man. Great job, I was very impressed.

Watching this makes me wonder if he would get a spot in a sequel Hardest Hitting Drummers list. Even an honorable mention for breaking one of his sticks here? But seriously, this was great!
RHCP is effectively a "jam band" at their core, that's how they come up with most of their material (and IMO what gives it the energy) but THIS is what you're able to do when you're comfortable within that context. He simply listened to what was being played, and played along. It was absolutely fascinating to watch and the fact that he got "most of it 'right'" is absolutely outrageous actually lol.
Chad is obviously listening while he's playing - he's matching the vocal and guitar intensity, matching phrasing. A real pro. One of my favorite drummers despite not really being a fan of RHCP. He's incredible!
Chad is so talented with improvising that this didn’t surprise me. He can latch onto musical motifs almost immediately and start making his own flourishes of them. The chops are completely unmatched

Wow, for Chad Smith to not hear this song before but to be able to get it in 3o seconds (pun intended) and come up with some batshit insane drum fills literally on the fly? I might not be a huge RHCP fan but I can't deny that he and Michael "Flea" Balzary are insanely talented.
My instrument is singing, but I can tell when a musician is into it when their mouth and body start to move with the music. Chad is amazing. I appreciate anybody that can play an any instrument as well as chad can play drums. ❤❤
8:29 I know that smile... I remember it from highschool band class when I would nail a tricky part I had been working on and the music teacher would just look over and nod at you with a smile on HIS face then immediately look away and keep conducting. It's the smile of, as Chad said, "I NAILED it!"
It's hard to appreciate how damn hard this is. The ability to know what's supposed to be there and what it's supposed to sound like only comes thru decades of drumming.
I've watched the original on Drumeo like a dozen times by now + a whole bunch of reactions. He was absolutely mesmerizing in this. Like we all know almost all of the people on Drumeo except for Sugarfoot did this challenge by listening to the whole track first at least once. This absolute maniac just went for it. And what a set: that ability to combine really quite perceptive listening and anticipating, with supreme confidence. A couple people have said in their reactions that they didn't believe it - but you can clearly see several points where he corrects some over and undershoots, and picks up things in the blink of an eye. Like the guitar licks which he matched by doing those tom fills - on the first one you can see he only catches the tail end of it. But even that is amazing as that lick is like 1 second long. I can't get enough and I've gone back to relisten to RHCP now :D
That vid was suggested to me by YT last night but I didn't watch it as of yet. Today I was prompted by YT to see your reaction vid and I'm glad I waited! That was F'en awesome! I'm not a fan of RHCP but I do like Chad....... That was ridiculous! I have broken many a stick in my time but never sawed one in half!
@4:20 I think his stick breaking gave the song a nice breath❤with the bass drum coming through more. It really prepped and reinforced the lead singer’s climax; pounding home the point. 🥁🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🎸🎧
I love how music connects people! I'm proud I could live in Chad's Smith time! He is legendary! I love musicians that can play music with their whole body!

30 years of being a guest/session drummer for countless artists on top of being the drummer for RHCP - the band that's known for having some of the best improvised live jams - I ain't at all surprised he nailed it on the first listen. Still, doesn't make it any less impressive. The man has more energy at 60 than I do at 33 lol. Such an underrated drummer.

He is so great, and it sounded like it was the original. I absolutely love it out of all these first-time plays.
I can't get enough and I've gone back to relisten to RHCP now :D
blows my mind how easily he follows the energy level without a single misstep, I've watched this a couple times and it never fails to make me grin
I've watched this series from Drumeo a bit... And seeing Chad just take off, and smash it from the get go... Is just amazing.
It's gnarly to see that Ricky Bobby's drumming career has taken off so well!
All extremely old Will Ferrell jokes aside, Chad's fuckin' awesome!
@4:20 I think his stick breaking gave the song a nice breath❤with the bass drum coming through more. It really prepped and reinforced the lead singer’s climax; pounding home the point. 🥁🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🎸🎧
That was impressive, I’ve never listened to 30 seconds to mars before, but his playing fit perfectly.
I love how music connects people! I'm proud I could live in Chad's Smith time! He is legendary! I love musicians that can play music with their whole body!
Chad Smith is brilliant lol I love his attitude!
Watched the original video first and thanks for confirming it doesn't happen like that usually, but that shows how pro he is, just picks a new one and continues, amazing, do like what you bring with your commentary on top!
Chad is literally one of my favorite non metal drummers, this was amazing
I was literally looking for this reaction on your channel yesterday, and today, here it is! 🤩🤣 SO Happy! Loved it!
Breaks a stick in half and still doesn’t miss a beat. Jesus.
He slayed it …period
The segue into the Mindlab Pro ad was AMAZING 🤣. Well done sir, well done.
Imagine this guy on a Tabla ;) No for real this guy is genius and all he does is simply count . Jared hasn't even finished his lyrics and BAM here goes Chad.... So much fun to watch you react to it. Thanks for this great video 😉
Chad Smith is so amazing! I love his Style of playing.
The way he just breaks the stick off dead center at the strongest part is just demonic.
the broken stick was the effin' cherry on top!!
this makes me really really wanna play drums again.
i havnt touched drum sticks in like 5-6 years and i miss it soo much
do ittttt :) :) :)
@@66Samus I wish I could but I gotta start saving up for an electric drum set I want
I used to have a drum set but I had to sell it
(Ngl when I heard that song that he started playing to I almost cried because I absolutely love that song and just made me think about playing the drums even more lol)
DUDE! TF, no way he did that without hearing it before, and omg I love this song.
absolutly amazing. so much fun to watch!
Man they need to get you on the channel I'd love to see what they would throw your way 🔥
Having a lot of fun watching the original Drumeo vids and then watching your reactions.
0:30 thank you, Chad. Thank you.
