As someone who has been daily driving a NB8B for 4 years I noticed a fair amount of misinformation in this video so i thought I'd just chime in. 0:25 - I am not sure if you are confused or got mumbled but MX5 is just what a Miata is called outside of North America. The chassis is still called a NB for the second generation no matter where you are. 0:37 - The seatbelt thing is not even an issue lmao. Just twist it. Regarding the retractors, it should actually still retract normally. Yours may be worn. 2:25 - I don't know what you mean by this, if you press the unlock button on your keyfob it should unlock both doors. If it is only unlocking one the mechanism may be broken on whichever door it isn't unlocking. If you are just talking about the button on the interior if you press the bottom it should unlock. 2:55 - Yes the boot release and fuel cap release are in an awkward position but you shouldn't need to use alot of force to open them. Just a light tug should do it. 3:45 - By what you are describing you either had shit tyres or a shit alignment or both. The car definitely isn't unstable at all with the stock wheels and tyres. Before I modified mine I did countless miles with the car in stock form which included extensive highway mileage and also track work and definitely didn't find the car to be unstable. 4:10 - 17s are definitely not the way for NAs or NBs. A set of lightweight wheels in 15x9 wrapped in 225s is perfect. 5:25 - Definitely agree that the antenna pretty stupid looking. However it shouldn't actually come up unless the radio is on, so if you are listening to a CD or Bluetooth etc it should stay down. I don't know why yours is covered in grease it shouldn't be like that. 5:50 - Don't remove the hardtop with the antenna up it's pretty self explanatory. 6:30 - While the AC on these cars is definitely not as good as something in a modern car I have to say for the most part it has been satisfactory. Our summers reach 113 Fahrenheit and I've never found it to be unsatisfactory, your unit may need recharging.
i find my AC to be extremely effective unless driving on the highway for ages and having the engine warm up a bit more than standard driving. i have a hard top as well which i assume helps a little but theres hardly any cabin space to cool so i find the AC to be a bit too strong a lot of the time
Ya this is an absurd video. I have the same exact car as him. Half of these "annoying things" are just things that are broken on his car. Never once had an issue with my seatbelt, both doors unlock, the boot/gas cap release are very easy to open, the standard wheels are 17" not 16" and my car tracks straight and is very stable at 80mph on the highway with my 15" wheels (you need alignment), AC works great. The onlyyyy thing that is accurate in this video is the antenna... but I don't even listen to the radio anyways.
Being someone who daily drives a 2001 NB I can say I 100% agree with everything you've just said. most of his issue seem to be specific to his car and things that are mainly wear and tear related.

Something wrong with your trunk/boot release, very little force needed on mine. Lubricate the cable and mechanism. I've never noticed an issue with my seatbelt either, but mine is 2004?
My 99 Miata was perfect. I didn’t have any problem with the seatbelt. The antenna went up and down fine. The 15 inch rims looked fine. The low profile tires were awesome. The A/C was good enough here in Florida. Don’t forget, small engine, small compressor. Only thing that bugged me was the noise with top up. It’s a top down car. 👍
The thing about the interior door locks - I’m pretty sure your door lock switch is broken because the switch on my 2001 SE both locks and unlocks the doors.
Probably been said before, but the stability issue with the lighter wheels is definitely an alignment issue and not a wheels issue. It makes sense that the heavier wheels make it less noticeable, but if you get the car aligned properly it should be stable at speeds as well as way more responsive with lighter wheels.
1: Both my NB1's are comfortable and I'm a big guy. Also, never noticed the seatbelt-behind-the-seat issue while driving my buddy's Special Edition or his base NB2. Of the two NB1's and two NB2's, only the dirty daily driver Base NB2 has a seatbelt issue. This may sound funny but, try cleaning the actual seatbelt; trust me, it works. A seatbelt that looks clean is probably loaded with skin cells and sweat, making it far stiffer than the retracting unit is made for. 2: Same buddy has bad wrists and early arthritis... zero issues pulling the levers. Something might need to be lubed/replaced on yours. 3: I have factory 15" wheels on one '99 and aftermarket 15" wheels on the other. When driving the NYS Thruway to work@75-80mph, lane changes, turning, etc all feel fine. Same buddy drove his SE back from Wisconsin with zero complaints/worries. Something might be wrong with your car; serious toe adjustment or something. I don't drive either car in the rain so, can't comment on that. 4: If you had smaller wheels on your car, it would look a lot less like an RC car/roller skate. Not joking. Also, if it wasn't a power retractable, it would always be in your way; as it is, unless you're listening to the radio, the car looks more streamlined without a stationary unit hailing the sun. On a side note... do you actually listen to the radio? 5: A bit irresponsible, not actually inspecting your A/C system before calling it a Miata-wide flaw. I'm going to leave you another comment with the true NB issues.
Yep. Have an '04 Mazdaspeed. Bilsteins with coil-overs. Changed the 17" OEMs to 15".....HUGE improvement. Bottom line...Build out your Miata to make it YOURS!
Don't need ac in a convertable. Ive never had a problem with my trunk release its super easy. My antenna is ripped out and I have a Bluetooth head unit
My first car was a '70 Firebird, bought in 1992. No power windows, no power locks, no A/C. I loved it and honestly I really enjoyed how none of the electric crap in modern cars intruded on my daily drive. I wish the Miata didn't have power windows as I just shucked out over $800 American to fix one; I love wind ups because they basically never break. As for the antenna, I thought about a stubby but ended up disconnecting it entirely as I never use the radio (I put my old 160 gig iPod in the car and it plays all the music I need). My car, a 2001, came with the same sixteen inchers as in the video but painted not polished. I got tired of looking at them and put another set of sixteens on it and kept the tires. Speaking of tires, I just use all weather BF Goodriches. They have a higher wear number because I don't race and I don't flog it at the lights. Honestly they track straighter than the performance tires that came on it, so they're easier to run down the interstates. The seatbelts are silly but in the years I've owned it I've just gotten used to reaching over the seat and winding them back up. I live in Florida and I have no issues with the AC or heater. It's a fun car and easy to live with, even for a middle aged yutz like myself.
I love the factory 17” rims on my 2018 ND Miata. They’re so much better than the DB 15” wheels on my last Miata. As for the antenna, mine comes with both the rubber antenna AND the shark fin antenna. Seems like overkill. Couldn’t they combine the two?
1. Turn the seatbelt 2. Man up and open the trunk or use the key fob twig boy. 3. Should've left the oem rim size with a lighter wheel. 4. Just unplug the antenna from inside the trunk, but then you will barely get radio signal. 5. The heat works good but if it's a really hot day the ac just doesn't work.

I have no clue what he is talking about, mine is rock solid at speed. Course my last two vehicles were 4x4's with one being a CJ7 Jeep. They are known to shimmy going down the road, to be honest not one of his complaints seem valid to me.
I own an stock 1999 Miata NB, stock 110 hp, the basic touring package with no A/C, open diff and the seats mentioned in the video ... Well, I find them super comfy. The only thing that has been upgraded is the brand new exhaust system, which also sounds nice and nitty but looks absolutely stock from outside. In summer, I put even lighter 5-spoke 14'' Heyking alloy wheels on it, silver dish and black spokes. Lovely!
My 1990 NA solves all of these issues: - No improved seats means that the seatbelt works fine. - No features whatsoever means that I don't have to deal with pesky things like a retractable antenna, trunk release inside the car, power locks, or even a working air conditioner! - I run the stock 14 inch daisy wheels, which pisses track guys off so much that they leave in a rage before they can tell me how wrong I am. - Pop up headlights distract people from the car's other flaws, like cracked paint, high mileage, questionably designed short nose crank, and so many more!
1.) Minor annoyance. Turn the belt sideways. Problem solved. 2.) I have no issues at all unlocking the doors from the inside of my car. You probably have a bad switch. I'm an old man with equally old and busted fingers, and I can open my trunk using the console release with no issues. 3.) I removed the stock 17" wheels on my MSM in favor of 15x7" wheels and it IMPROVED my handling and control, and made it a dream on the highway. 4.) Antenna sucks. I never use it so I unplugged it. Turn the radio off to remove your hard top, DUH. 5.) NB HVAC does suck. It doesn't suck like that in any other generation. I sold my NB and got a NC PRHT and don't have any of these issues any more.
3:13, there’s one that the Russians do for slap matches, and it helps with forearm strength. It surprisingly helps a lot for what they do. But it’s basically the action your doing. But they use a gym machine and a special attachment to do it doe.
I have the same exact year and trim you literally just push the lock button the other way and it unlocks; you can also turn the stereo off and the antenna will go down; the button is also not that hard to pull it actually has the appropriate amount of pressure IMO, the seat belt has already been resolved but the a/c is weak but to be fair it doesn’t need to be that strong in such a small cabin try a/c pro.
It sounds like most of your gripes would be solved with an older NA. Unsprung weight isn't defined by rotation or connection to the drivetrain. It's what it sounds like. It's what is not supported by the spring and damper and its motion follows the ground, or at least wheel/tire. Much of your suspension mass is also unsprung. I'm guessing you were just using that as a way to identify the unsprung parts. Adding unsprung weight does not increase stability. The increase in rotating mass can add a feeling of stability.
Suggestion: Put the last 60 seconds at the start of the video - - where you say the car is really GREAT (and fun) and you had a hard time coming up with 5 little things you thought could be better. That would put your 5 items in perspective. I have a 2003 Miata (NB like yours) and I agree with some of the things you said (e.g. seat belt and antenna), but for me these are minor things on a car this wonderful and fun.

I own a 2007 NC with 18" black Oz Racing Ultraleggera wheels paired with Dunlop Sport Maxx RT tires. I just love the way the car looks and handles. I would never put back on the OG 16" wheels, they ruin the aesthetics, plus the handling wasn't that good either. I know experts recommend smaller rims, but I really haven't seen the benefits.
Mine's a 1995 Miata and the best size tire I've had on it has been 14".. larger the tire, the less control of it I have had. Weird issue with the seatbelts. This wasn't a problem in the older models.
OK. As an owner of 2 NA miatas (MX-5s): 1. Seatbelts. Meh, don't have the updated seats - but seriously, you can't just twist it before pulling? Biggest problem for me is the reach back to find the seatbelt! 2. No buttons at all on either of my doors! Not exactly a gymnast move to open the passenger door - be honest. 2a? You can adjust the cable in the boot, close to the cap. This can make opening the flap a breeze. 3. Your car is 'twitchy and unpredictable' because of your 17" wheels. My second miata was purchased with 17s on them, and I really couldn't understand why it was so less drivable, even though I could tell if a coin was heads or tails when I drove over it. I understand the aesthetic look is incredible, but honestly, the trade-off isn't worth it. Go back to 15s, you'll totally fall in love with your car again! I can't stress this enough - the wheels may look great, but they take the amazing go--cart away, and leave you with a skittish, and kind of ordinary car. 4. Antenna. I kinda like the old-school motorised antenna on my NA8, even though it uses a digital radio these days. The NA6 has a fixed antenna! (It has a ball on the end, and can be unscrewed. It's also the perfect tool to clear debris from the rain tubes). You do have to adjust your hard top removal strategy, I guess. 5. I'm lucky that both my NAs have A/C. With the roof up (or a hard top on), the small space isn't too hard too cool. But you cannot really cool your feet, and they can get hot. Yes, the aircon is underwhelming. But the heater is great, and I've driven in freezing conditions with the roof down.
I have black leather seats in my 99 miata. Tho mine has torsen and a few other additions it think mine was a sport model or something. My understanding you can kinda pick and choose what you wanted in your miata at the time. As soon as I got my lil bundle of joy I changed her wheels and tires
LOL Minor complaints are a fraction of a fraction of the many pros! The miatas fit like a glove so the seatbelt is tight. It will save your life! Always use the trunk release on the key fab. It is so easy so use it! Put some WD-40 on the manual trunk release lever, it makes prying up easier! Pros: 35mpg Agile Fun Avoids accidents Best car for new drivers because it teaches Defensive Driving With the top off, No blind spots!!!! Fun to drive Cheap parts! Most miatas have noninterference engines!!!! If the timing belt snaps No engine damage!! Check yours to be sure! A Blast to drive!! Did I say FUN!!!? Easy to work on. Cons: The oil filter change can be creative to figure out... Grab from above the engine or from the passenger wheel side. All in all I've loved owning my 03 SE Miata 6-speed with cruise control! N-joy the ride!
There is a solution to every problem you listed. The car has an incredibly healthy aftermarket with modifications to resolve (or at least alleviate) all your your "complaints". 1. Seat belts - There is a "miata seat belt extender" to help with retraction. Google it. 2. Door locks - Use the remote or reach over. It's a Miata, not a Mercedes. 3. Trunk popper - use the remote or get over yourself. If the effort is too high, check for kinks in the cable release. 4. Wheels and tires are a personal choice re style and performance. I've run both heavy and light wheels, all seasons and summer only performance tires. All that matters is that your setup doesn't rub. Yours look like they rub, but you do you bro. 5. Delete the antenna if you hate it. Lots of single and double DIN radios out there with HD radio and SXM to tickle your fancy. If you're going to pull your hard top, you and your helper can do without tunes for a few minutes. It's dirty? Wipe it down. My antenna is only up when I'm driving, so I fail to see how this is a big deal. 6. AC not blowing cold? Check your AC compressor, system charge and most importantly the heater core seals. There's a flap that blocks the heater core from the ventilation system and those seals deteriorate. The NA and NB cars share many components, including the ventilation controls. Take it from a guy who refurbished the seals on a car 10 years older than yours. The Miatas had VERY effective HVAC... when they were new. I lived in several southern cities including New Orleans and Atlanta when my car was young. It was fine. With a little TLC, it's fine now. Also - you're complaining that your car strains to fight off 110° heat in OKC. If you want to be ice cold in the summertime, buy a panther platform Lincoln town car. They're cheap, body on frame and with proper care will never, ever die. I felt like your next complaint was going to be how you can't carry anything big. Or how slow it gets when you have a passenger. Or how noisy it is on long highway drives. You're young. I get it. I see some of me in you to be honest. If you really want to enjoy your Miata, do what I did once I got myself established: Get a practical car for daily driving and creature comforts. You'll then appreciate the Miata for what it is instead of what it isn't.
The trunk release Cable probably needs lubrication. Granted the positioning could be better , but you don't need to open the trunk from a driving position if the car is moving. So I'm pretty sure you can turn into a position to reach it more easily before stepping out. Not a biggie
1) Your seatbelt. pull the belt and the buckle follows. LEAVE your seatbelt on the other side of the seat. Never once had that problem in my 04. 2) The trunk latch is not hard at all, it was never hard in any 3 of my prior miatas or my buddies, you probably just have a stuck one from the previous owner. 3) For the love of god, HIT THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT DOOR BUTTON. It power locks AND unlocks. How bad are your problem solving skills to have owned this car for months and never figured that out? I figured that out before i drove it off the lot. 4) You can disconnect that antenna plug in the trunk,. leave it down, get a double din head unit and some new door speakers and it will never bother you again... these are all not problems any mechanic would even find as one and are all quickly remedied (half the list doesn't exist tbh.)
It's a 20 year old car - try maintaining it! Get the air-con re-gassed, put the other wheels back on, you've over geared it. I think you would be better suited to a Nissan Leaf, in baby blue with pink flowers. F**Kin man up!
Problem 4: oh is 16 inch twitchy and unpredictable? Bitch the first and nb1 gen came with 14 inch or 15 inch wheels - the big wheels ARE the problem. I am running 15x7 Enkei95s on my nb1 and its awesome. sidewall for the win baby.

I own a 2002 MX-5. Here are my responses to your gripes: 1- Completely fair, and annoying. 2- Mine doesn't have remote locking, however, the driver's door lock automatically unlocks the passenger side, too. As for the trunk latch - mine doesn't require excessive force. I can do it with one finger, so I don't know why yours is that bad. 3- I have the stock 16" wheels and I have no issues with handling and predictability. I think your issue might have been tire-related, as my old scrappy rubber made it sketchy AF, but new tires (still budget ones) are great. 4- The antenna is so ugly! And the small rubber ones don't have great signal. Hate this! 5- My climate is fairly strong, so I think yours might be an isolated issue. Big issue for me is the transmission tunnel doesn't have enough heatshielding - so the footwells get hot as hell and the AC struggles to compensate on hot days
The trunk and gas lever issue is odd. I've yet to run into a miata with the issue you mention which makes me thing that something is binding. Seat belts are definitely something that require a present mind even with the NA maitas; easy to get the belt bound up in the retention area. Wheels and tires are whatever. To each their own. Sometimes I like to drift at the speed limit and throw on someones used bald tires to have a laugh. Otherwise sticky rubber and good alignment are going to be the thing to focus on. Anyone thinking of wider rims should also consider reinforcing the hubs as those tend to go with wide sticky tires on track days. Also, NA is by far the easiest version to work on for the type that plans to do their own maintenance. The later cars are great, but the newer the version the more a nightmare simple jobs can be.
These problems aren’t really what the Miata was made for, if you wanted all of these things in a car of that age you should’ve gotten a town car, or civic, or corolla. Miatas are built for the drive.

My 99 Miata was perfect. I didn’t have any problem with the seatbelt. The antenna went up and down fine. The 15 inch rims looked fine. The low profile tires were awesome. The A/C was good enough here in Florida. Don’t forget, small engine, small compressor.
Only thing that bugged me was the noise with top up.

The thing about the interior door locks - I’m pretty sure your door lock switch is broken because the switch on my 2001 SE both locks and unlocks the doors.
Probably been said before, but the stability issue with the lighter wheels is definitely an alignment issue and not a wheels issue.
It makes sense that the heavier wheels make it less noticeable, but if you get the car aligned properly it should be stable at speeds as well as way more responsive with lighter wheels.
1: Both my NB1's are comfortable and I'm a big guy. Also, never noticed the seatbelt-behind-the-seat issue while driving my buddy's Special Edition or his base NB2. Of the two NB1's and two NB2's, only the dirty daily driver Base NB2 has a seatbelt issue. This may sound funny but, try cleaning the actual seatbelt; trust me, it works. A seatbelt that looks clean is probably loaded with skin cells and sweat, making it far stiffer than the retracting unit is made for.
2: Same buddy has bad wrists and early arthritis... zero issues pulling the levers. Something might need to be lubed/replaced on yours.
3: I have factory 15" wheels on one '99 and aftermarket 15" wheels on the other. When driving the NYS Thruway to work@75-80mph, lane changes, turning, etc all feel fine. Same buddy drove his SE back from Wisconsin with zero complaints/worries. Something might be wrong with your car; serious toe adjustment or something. I don't drive either car in the rain so, can't comment on that.
4: If you had smaller wheels on your car, it would look a lot less like an RC car/roller skate. Not joking. Also, if it wasn't a power retractable, it would always be in your way; as it is, unless you're listening to the radio, the car looks more streamlined without a stationary unit hailing the sun. On a side note... do you actually listen to the radio?
5: A bit irresponsible, not actually inspecting your A/C system before calling it a Miata-wide flaw.

Yep. Have an '04 Mazdaspeed. Bilsteins with coil-overs. Changed the 17" OEMs to 15".....HUGE improvement. Bottom line...Build out your Miata to make it YOURS!
Don't need ac in a convertable. Ive never had a problem with my trunk release its super easy. My antenna is ripped out and I have a Bluetooth head unit
My first car was a '70 Firebird, bought in 1992. No power windows, no power locks, no A/C. I loved it and honestly I really enjoyed how none of the electric crap in modern cars intruded on my daily drive. I wish the Miata didn't have power windows as I just shucked out over $800 American to fix one; I love wind ups because they basically never break. As for the antenna, I thought about a stubby but ended up disconnecting it entirely as I never use the radio (I put my old 160 gig iPod in the car and it plays all the music I need). My car, a 2001, came with the same sixteen inchers as in the video but painted not polished. I got tired of looking at them and put another set of sixteens on it and kept the tires. Speaking of tires, I just use all weather BF Goodriches. They have a higher wear number because I don't race and I don't flog it at the lights. Honestly they track straighter than the performance tires that came on it, so they're easier to run down the interstates. The seatbelts are silly but in the years I've owned it I've just gotten used to reaching over the seat and winding them back up. I live in Florida and I have no issues with the AC or heater. It's a fun car and easy to live with, even for a middle aged yutz like myself.
I love the factory 17” rims on my 2018 ND Miata. They’re so much better than the DB 15” wheels on my last Miata. As for the antenna, mine comes with both the rubber antenna AND the shark fin antenna. Seems like overkill. Couldn’t they combine the two?
1. Turn the seatbelt 2. Man up and open the trunk or use the key fob twig boy. 3. Should've left the oem rim size with a lighter wheel. 4. Just unplug the antenna from inside the trunk, but then you will barely get radio signal. 5. The heat works good but if it's a really hot day the ac just doesn't work.

You have that poor nb lookin like a Jeep with them huge ass wheels, also the fact that the car is so light is the highlight not something that needs to be fixed, you wanna know why the car is flighty at interstate speeds? Not only is it super light and meant for taking corners but if you’re going interstate speeds you’re in 6th gear at around 5k rpm, it’s just not meant for it

I own an stock 1999 Miata NB, stock 110 hp, the basic touring package with no A/C, open diff and the seats mentioned in the video ... Well, I find them super comfy. The only thing that has been upgraded is the brand new exhaust system, which also sounds nice and nitty but looks absolutely stock from outside.
In summer, I put even lighter 5-spoke 14'' Heyking alloy wheels on it, silver dish and black spokes. Lovely!

My 1990 NA solves all of these issues:
- No improved seats means that the seatbelt works fine.
- No features whatsoever means that I don't have to deal with pesky things like a retractable antenna, trunk release inside the car, power locks, or even a working air conditioner!
- I run the stock 14 inch daisy wheels, which pisses track guys off so much that they leave in a rage before they can tell me how wrong I am.
- Pop up headlights distract people from the car's other flaws, like cracked paint, high mileage, questionably designed short nose crank, and so many more!

Those seatbelt buckles are a problem, actually how do you get your body in the car with your arms outstretched?
1.) Minor annoyance. Turn the belt sideways. Problem solved.
2.) I have no issues at all unlocking the doors from the inside of my car. You probably have a bad switch. I'm an old man with equally old and busted fingers, and I can open my trunk using the console release with no issues.
3.) I removed the stock 17" wheels on my MSM in favor of 15x7" wheels and it IMPROVED my handling and control, and made it a dream on the highway.
4.) Antenna sucks. I never use it so I unplugged it. Turn the radio off to remove your hard top, DUH.
5.) NB HVAC does suck. It doesn't suck like that in any other generation.
I sold my NB and got a NC PRHT and don't have any of these issues any more.

I have the same exact year and trim you literally just push the lock button the other way and it unlocks; you can also turn the stereo off and the antenna will go down; the button is also not that hard to pull it actually has the appropriate amount of pressure IMO, the seat belt has already been resolved but the a/c is weak but to be fair it doesn’t need to be that strong in such a small cabin try a/c pro.

It sounds like most of your gripes would be solved with an older NA.
Unsprung weight isn't defined by rotation or connection to the drivetrain. It's what it sounds like. It's what is not supported by the spring and damper and its motion follows the ground, or at least wheel/tire. Much of your suspension mass is also unsprung. I'm guessing you were just using that as a way to identify the unsprung parts. Adding unsprung weight does not increase stability. The increase in rotating mass can add a feeling of stability.
The antenna shouldn't cause any problems and if it does, its really not that hard to change it out for a short one
Suggestion: Put the last 60 seconds at the start of the video - - where you say the car is really GREAT (and fun) and you had a hard time coming up with 5 little things you thought could be better. That would put your 5 items in perspective. I have a 2003 Miata (NB like yours) and I agree with some of the things you said (e.g. seat belt and antenna), but for me these are minor things on a car this wonderful and fun.

I own a 2007 NC with 18" black Oz Racing Ultraleggera wheels paired with Dunlop Sport Maxx RT tires. I just love the way the car looks and handles. I would never put back on the OG 16" wheels, they ruin the aesthetics, plus the handling wasn't that good either. I know experts recommend smaller rims, but I really haven't seen the benefits.

The unlock works on my 01 and my 100 pound wife has zero problems with the fuel door. The antenna and A/C are correct.

Mine's a 1995 Miata and the best size tire I've had on it has been 14".. larger the tire, the less control of it I have had. Weird issue with the seatbelts. This wasn't a problem in the older models.
OK. As an owner of 2 NA miatas (MX-5s):
1. Seatbelts. Meh, don't have the updated seats - but seriously, you can't just twist it before pulling? Biggest problem for me is the reach back to find the seatbelt!
2. No buttons at all on either of my doors! Not exactly a gymnast move to open the passenger door - be honest.
2a? You can adjust the cable in the boot, close to the cap. This can make opening the flap a breeze.
3. Your car is 'twitchy and unpredictable' because of your 17" wheels. My second miata was purchased with 17s on them, and I really couldn't understand why it was so less drivable, even though I could tell if a coin was heads or tails when I drove over it. I understand the aesthetic look is incredible, but honestly, the trade-off isn't worth it. Go back to 15s, you'll totally fall in love with your car again! I can't stress this enough - the wheels may look great, but they take the amazing go--cart away, and leave you with a skittish, and kind of ordinary car.
4. Antenna. I kinda like the old-school motorised antenna on my NA8, even though it uses a digital radio these days. The NA6 has a fixed antenna! (It has a ball on the end, and can be unscrewed. It's also the perfect tool to clear debris from the rain tubes). You do have to adjust your hard top removal strategy, I guess.
5. I'm lucky that both my NAs have A/C. With the roof up (or a hard top on), the small space isn't too hard too cool. But you cannot really cool your feet, and they can get hot. Yes, the aircon is underwhelming. But the heater is great, and I've driven in freezing conditions with the roof down.

I have black leather seats in my 99 miata. Tho mine has torsen and a few other additions it think mine was a sport model or something. My understanding you can kinda pick and choose what you wanted in your miata at the time. As soon as I got my lil bundle of joy I changed her wheels and tires

The miatas fit like a glove so the seatbelt is tight. It will save your life! Always use the trunk release on the key fab. It is so easy so use it! Put some WD-40 on the manual trunk release lever, it makes prying up easier!

There is a solution to every problem you listed. The car has an incredibly healthy aftermarket with modifications to resolve (or at least alleviate) all your your "complaints".
1. Seat belts - There is a "miata seat belt extender" to help with retraction. Google it.
2. Door locks - Use the remote or reach over. It's a Miata, not a Mercedes.
3. Trunk popper - use the remote or get over yourself. If the effort is too high, check for kinks in the cable release.
4. Wheels and tires are a personal choice re style and performance. I've run both heavy and light wheels, all seasons and summer only performance tires. All that matters is that your setup doesn't rub. Yours look like they rub, but you do you bro.
5. Delete the antenna if you hate it. Lots of single and double DIN radios out there with HD radio and SXM to tickle your fancy. If you're going to pull your hard top, you and your helper can do without tunes for a few minutes. It's dirty? Wipe it down. My antenna is only up when I'm driving, so I fail to see how this is a big deal.
6. AC not blowing cold? Check your AC compressor, system charge and most importantly the heater core seals. There's a flap that blocks the heater core from the ventilation system and those seals deteriorate. The NA and NB cars share many components, including the ventilation controls. Take it from a guy who refurbished the seals on a car 10 years older than yours. The Miatas had VERY effective HVAC... when they were new. I lived in several southern cities including New Orleans and Atlanta when my car was young. It was fine. With a little TLC, it's fine now.
Also - you're complaining that your car strains to fight off 110° heat in OKC. If you want to be ice cold in the summertime, buy a panther platform Lincoln town car. They're cheap, body on frame and with proper care will never, ever die.
I felt like your next complaint was going to be how you can't carry anything big. Or how slow it gets when you have a passenger. Or how noisy it is on long highway drives. You're young. I get it. I see some of me in you to be honest. If you really want to enjoy your Miata, do what I did once I got myself established: Get a practical car for daily driving and creature comforts. You'll then appreciate the Miata for what it is instead of what it isn't.

The trunk release Cable probably needs lubrication. Granted the positioning could be better , but you don't need to open the trunk from a driving position if the car is moving. So I'm pretty sure you can turn into a position to reach it more easily before stepping out. Not a biggie
1) Your seatbelt. pull the belt and the buckle follows. LEAVE your seatbelt on the other side of the seat. Never once had that problem in my 04.
2) The trunk latch is not hard at all, it was never hard in any 3 of my prior miatas or my buddies, you probably just have a stuck one from the previous owner.
3) For the love of god, HIT THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT DOOR BUTTON. It power locks AND unlocks. How bad are your problem solving skills to have owned this car for months and never figured that out? I figured that out before i drove it off the lot.
4) You can disconnect that antenna plug in the trunk,. leave it down, get a double din head unit and some new door speakers and it will never bother you again...
these are all not problems any mechanic would even find as one and are all quickly remedied (half the list doesn't exist tbh.)
It's a 20 year old car - try maintaining it! Get the air-con re-gassed, put the other wheels back on, you've over geared it. I think you would be better suited to a Nissan Leaf, in baby blue with pink flowers. F**Kin man up!

Problem 4: oh is 16 inch twitchy and unpredictable? Bitch the first and nb1 gen came with 14 inch or 15 inch wheels - the big wheels ARE the problem. I am running 15x7 Enkei95s on my nb1 and its awesome. sidewall for the win baby.

I own a 2002 MX-5. Here are my responses to your gripes:
1- Completely fair, and annoying.
2- Mine doesn't have remote locking, however, the driver's door lock automatically unlocks the passenger side, too. As for the trunk latch - mine doesn't require excessive force. I can do it with one finger, so I don't know why yours is that bad.
3- I have the stock 16" wheels and I have no issues with handling and predictability. I think your issue might have been tire-related, as my old scrappy rubber made it sketchy AF, but new tires (still budget ones) are great.
4- The antenna is so ugly! And the small rubber ones don't have great signal. Hate this!
5- My climate is fairly strong, so I think yours might be an isolated issue. Big issue for me is the transmission tunnel doesn't have enough heatshielding - so the footwells get hot as hell and the AC struggles to compensate on hot days
If you need AC in a Miata, you're doing it wrong.

The trunk and gas lever issue is odd. I've yet to run into a miata with the issue you mention which makes me thing that something is binding. Seat belts are definitely something that require a present mind even with the NA maitas; easy to get the belt bound up in the retention area. Wheels and tires are whatever. To each their own. Sometimes I like to drift at the speed limit and throw on someones used bald tires to have a laugh. Otherwise sticky rubber and good alignment are going to be the thing to focus on. Anyone thinking of wider rims should also consider reinforcing the hubs as those tend to go with wide sticky tires on track days. Also, NA is by far the easiest version to work on for the type that plans to do their own maintenance. The later cars are great, but the newer the version the more a nightmare simple jobs can be.
