Pro Tip: Drain and replace the fluid that the shifter sits in. Most sources I have read call it the turret fluid. Basically get the old stuff out and replace with some fresh new fluid. Helps with the shifting fluidity (ha). Good video! You should check out The Car Passion Channel for more Cali related miata content
@@wheelemverb I agree, it might also be a good idea to change the transmission and differential oil. You never know how long that oil has been sitting there, unless you're already aware, of course. and welcome to the miata world!
Given the fact that this has been sitting around for 4 years - presumably with fluids inside - you should do a fluid flush on all the major parts. All the oils, all the coolant, fuel + all the brake components. Especially brake components. Dot3 sucks up water like nobody's business, making it less effective. To be clear, flush, which is more than just fluid changes, you have to clean the passages with specific fluids (easiest being the rad, using a hose). It doesn't make a noticeable change, but it does make a huge change for the longevity aspect. That rad alone could be close to a rot because it sat. 2~3 years is enough with these modern stuff, it's not like in the old days when you could leave a rad around for 40 years and it wouldn't really much care at all. jm2c.
Who TF uses DOT 3 in a canyon miata? It boils and fades at less than 300 degrees wet... Please use a nice DOT 4 like motul 660 if you plan on any hard canyon driving, wont boil until around 500 degrees wet. And yes 100% get an aluminum rad (mishimoto is only like $275, a new stock plastic one is $375).
This one is so good! You might be the luckiest guy in the world, though, given how many things did go right for you. The startup after four years sitting, passing smog just from a spark plug change, way more. But, on the other hand, the Miata I had decades ago was the most reliable car I've ever owned with just basic maintanance. You are going to have so much fun driving this car! Cheers, Willem!
@@marceloa.1597 Yeah I think soldering is one of those things you should always have someone show you the correct way to do it before you just try it.
You couldn't have picked a better car. I found this channel after I picked up my own 2001 V70. But I bought that to be my daily, because my NB Miata needed some work. And now you also got an NB. Haven't watched the vid yet but can't wait to see.
Small tip for future polishing - looks like you're using the Bauer short throw DA. I would swap it out for the long throw version, get a couple waffle orange and white foam pads (medium and finishing), and I think the Sonax polish/perfect finish combo is really easy for a beginner. Just a few extra ways to avoid burning through clear and putting holograms into the paint as a result of inexperience. Looks great of course.
Very happy to see a new video from you. Here’s a tip: heat your wires from below, with your soldering iron, then feed your solder from the top once the joint is hot enough to melt the solder. You’ll get a much better joint that way. Looking forward to more content from you.
If we had shelters for cars, you should be one of the owners. The way that you treat and appreciate cars so sick. Can't wait for the next builds. Cheers brother!
the entire shift rebuild kit is a must, as well as getting the Ford manual transmission fluid and replacing it in the shifter housing, smooths everything.
Loving the format, most other channels are going away from the "Top Gear" lengthy episodes and into weekly TV show territory of sub 20 minutes. Keep making the quality content, doesn't matter how long each video take. Will watch and rewatch these!
Dude, I’ve just discovered your channel thanks to this Miata vid and let me say that you had my attention from the first second. NA & ND RF owner here, feels great to see how people like you enjoy the Miata world. Greetings from Spain! 🤝🇪🇸
So glad to have a new project to follow! When you're soldering, if you allow the iron to heat the wires for a few moments, the heat will wick (suck) the solder right in, making a perfect joint which is also more corrosion resistant.
I love your new Miata !! It’s really sweet, especially since it sat for 4 years. I can’t wait for the next videos on it Although this video is 40 minutes long, as always you make them feel like 15 minutes. You’re my favourite car channel by far
Awesome vid man! Dope to see that steering wheel been thinking to get that forever Great work bringing it back to life ! May you have many fun days ahead of you in the NB :)
Great restore on your new 99 Miata, yeah motor mounts make huge difference, when you put those new kobo matts in the car wow did that bring back memories of my first Volvo just over 43 years ago, they sold kobo matts like crazy for Volvos back then and they are super high quality,10 times better than carpet matts, I wished i saved them out of my last 242 GLT when i got the 89 i have know, living in CA you'll get lots of great use from the Miata plus California has the most parts available for Miata's, thats a big win for you , look forward to the future video on it 👍
If you’re going to rebuild the shifter it’s also worth swapping for a weighted gear knob (I can recommend team voodoo). Also worth replacing the differential mounts because the those and the two engine mounts are the only things really connecting the drivetrain to the chassis.
As someone who has your products, owned multiple miatas, done track days and autocrosses for years, recognises 6UL wheels instantly. I'm sure i'll love this video. Worlds colliding. Sup from England!

Thanks for the amazing upload, it's been way too long! I hope you have lots more ideas for the Miata. Between your uploads I've sold my 2019 Volvo V60 and bought a 2007 P2 XC70 last model year cause I figured it's now or never. It's amazing how good the old ones feel still in this day and age.
if you haven't yet, replace every seal you can on the engine Valve cover, CAM, Crank, and CAS seals, the coolant hoses, Rear main, the thermostat (make sure to get ONLY the MAZDA thermostat gasket with the little tabs on it, NO AFTERMARKET). The halfmoon seals on the oil pan aren't really a big deal unless it's leaking but worth changing out. Flush the clutch slave and get a braided line, another must. if you end up going deep, water pump, timing belt, tensioners, pulleys, and gaskets, I regret not pulling the lifters out to clean them when I did that.
dang glad to see it, loved the v70r content and as someone who has owned nearly 20 miata's glad to see this one as well. feel free to ama and i can help with stuff
You have a great channel and I enjoy watching your videos. I’m glad that you expanded your channel from just Volvo. I was wondering where you were going next
Love the MX5, Japan took the original idea of Lotus and made it better. If I had to sell my Impreza, one of these would definitely be a consideration as a 2 seater sports car for me. Only issue here in the UK is weather ...v difficult to find one rust free. Very satisfying to see your fixes and work on this. Liked, subbed.
Also do the Timing Belt and Waterpump. Its often overlooked and when sitting for that long + i guess no history of it been done and when, i would recomend it as part of preventive maintenance. Sorry for my bad English. Nice Video and greetings from Germany.
Good job on getting an early NB. Around 01/02 they did some major revisions to the chassis and engine and made it more complicated. The late 90s cars are much more similar to the NA and better for it imo.
Honestly at the end it looks much better than it was at the start Thoe i am pretty jealous of the AC and the rims because NBFL did not always come with AC as standard
Good to see you agian!, I struggled good before when soldering, my tips that works great for me is use flux and clean the wires fist, put some solder at both ends, then heat them up together and use a bit more solder on it, then its gonna be perfect every time, atleast it does for me :D Would be sick if you buyed a Ebay turbo kit and turbo it 😎

Solder will crack over time in automotive applications. It's not resistant to movement and vibrations. That's why it works on PCBs (but even then sometimes goes bad) but not on wires. When you have the chance, crimp a connection on that soldered fan wire.
Autocross clutches. 100% chance of surprising first time drivers. :)) I stalled my first one too. And figure this, above this, in the F1 grade... it's even worse! The clutch coordination required to keep the thing running in a monopost is nuts.
