So much to say about the Miata. First I have a 99, I have also driven every gen and even most sub gen’s (na, nb1, nb2, NC1,2&3, nd1&2,). Every gen of Miata is fun to drive, there is such a variation to choose from with no wrong answers. I am grateful they exist and to some extent not fully appreciated so the price is reasonable (even though prices have rose drastically recently). I was born into the car world as my dad raced and I grew up in the pit. My first car was a 79 280zx and my second car was a 76 280z. I have owned 30 cars and most of them manual. I have driven well over 1,000 cars and I have two cars that are my benchmark. In first is the 981 Cayman GTS PDK that I raced around SpeedVegas, precision is the word that best describes the 981 Caymam GTS PDK. Anything I asked of it in hairpin corners it would do with each corner entry speed able to be increased. Then you have that flat 6 sound singing in your ear to redline and it becomes addicting to drive flat out. In second is my NB1 Miata, with a hard dog roll bar, cheap tires that have low limits and easy breakaway that is very progressive, stock plus suspension, 5 speed manual that is a joy to shift , lsd , hydraulic steering rack with great feedback and weighs only 2,299lbs. This NB1 is FUN at any speed. Thank you gents for some of the best automotive content on UA-cam.

Great video... I really enjoyed that... thanks! I'm 54 years old and bought a flawless completely stock 43k-mile 2000 SE (NB1) two years ago. It now has over 90k miles on it (which is still nothing for a 19-yr-old car)! You could say I enjoy driving it! LOL! It's still stock with the exception of adjustable Koni Sport dampers and a Racing Beat front sway bar to tighten up the handling just a bit. I'm also in my second season of autocross with it - and it is perfect for that! I've owned far faster V8-powered muscle cars and far more luxurious/comfortable cars, but none of them were anywhere near as much FUN as the Miata. I drive it every single day and it never fails to put a smile on my face. I've been tempted recently to upgrade to a new ND2 for the modern amenities and additional power & comfort - and to reward Mazda for continuing to build this car, but I just can't bear the thought of getting rid of the NB. It just has so much... soul! This video reinforces my reluctance to sell it, but I still can't stop thinking about the ND2. Maybe I'll keep the NB1 AND buy an ND2! LOL
@@btmeant578 She wasn't in the best shape when i got her but i drove her for years. I didn't have the money to deal with the issues she had like: bad soft top in a state that rains a bunch, no ac so i had to drive with the windows down in the rain so my windows wouldn't fog( got splashed by 2 different cars the same day once on what was only a 7 minute drive home from work. ), randomly wouldn't start sometimes, headlights wouldn't go up and down and eventually went haywire( had to unplug the motors in the up position), the list goes on... but when she wouldn't start one day, I was kind of over the pit falls knowing i was too broke at the time to fix them any time soon so i honestly didn't put in the effort i should have to find the problem and sold her for practically nothing. turns out it was just the battery.... he literally bought one the same day and drove her home. I would have kept her if i had done a little more research to learn that a battery could still be the issue even if the car wouldn't start with a jump but i wrote it off as not a battery issue. anyway, i never reported that i sold the car and we got a towing notice in the mail about a year later. looks like she just completely broke down and the dude that bought her just abandoned her somewhere.
My wife sold her red '90 MX5 several yrs ago. Regretted it all this time. She recently bought a red '19 RF Grand Touring. Now, all that regret is gone. Would have gotten the 30th anniversary version if it weren't for the color. Thanks for the comparison. It's spot on.
I drove my buddies NA 5 years ago summer between highschool and college. I had never driven a rear wheel drive sports car before and I ended up doing a 180 with it (thankfully in the middle of the road so neither us nor the car was hurt). That experience was what set me on my journey to make me qualified to own my Mustang GT PP1 today!
It's just interesting that both people grinned like children in the NA. And both had very serious facial expressions in the ND. That level of joy/fun is the truest form of motoring.
I drive a 1990 Miata and I just love it. They are so much fun, its my all year round car. I also love that 30 anniversary one...Love that orange colour
So ill write this. I saw this video on release. immediately sold my built e85 wrx and now drive an NA miata. Ive driven super cars like r8's, 570s, c8 vette, svr f-types, and im still happy with my modded NA. 1 year of miata ownership with almost 200k miles on the odo and i still track it. best all around car ever made imo
This review helped me in deciding to go for an ND2 , thankfully there was a 30th AE available at my local dealership. It wasn't sold yet and I fell in love with it. Haven't regretted my purchase since. Keep on doing what you're doing; your car reviews are well thought out , funny and the production value is off the charts.
Fair comparison. I'm keeping my stock NA until I die. Hopefully that's a while away … Just discovered the Momo steering wheel under the cover after 2 years ownership in ignorance. She just keeps on giving. Wonderful cars.
Great review! As an owner of a 1997 NA (purchased new in '97) it was great to see a comparison by two reviewers who obviously love Miatas as much as I and many others do. I may buy an ND, but I will never sell my NA. Oh, and mine, being a well-equipped NA, has many of the features you said weren't in the NA such as power windows, etc. But as you said, any Miata is a great sports car. Thanks!
I own an NC3 MX-5 that I bought new in 2007. I’ll hear all of the; ‘oh it’s heavy because of the power hard top, etc., , but in my view it’s the prettiest MX-5 and driving to the super market after all these years for a carton of milk is still a joy. It’s economical, reliable, doesn’t leak or rust and rewards me with its beautiful handling, steering, gearbox and clutch. Oh and the 2 litre engine actually really suits the car. The pedals are perfectly positioned for heal and toe driving. In all of those years my only disappointment is; the power hard top stopped working a couple of years ago, so it is now a full time coupe. Both the dealership who sold me the car and 2 specialist MX-5 workshops tell me that despite it’s only having a bent tooth on a sector gear Mazda insist on replacing the entire mechanism (+ labour) for about half the current market value of the car. I’m also reliably informed that an NC3 with a broken power hard top is basically unsalable - not that I want sell it but…? I love this car - NOT HAPPY, MAZDA!!!
Roughly $5000 for a good NA and over $40,000 for an ND. NA done and done. Spend another $10,000 or less that you saved and add suspension, wheels/tires, frame braces, roll bar, brakes, supercharge/ turbo. You then have as much performance and debatably more style too.
Buying new cars supports the continuation of miata production. Also, some buyers want the benefits of a new car such as not having to replace every busing, bearing, control arm, etc. Also, you can get the benefits of a warranty
Another thing that's really cool about the Miata is its fuel efficiency. It's one of few RWD sports cars that would also be economical to daily drive, which is quite rare.
Amazing car, amazing review, and I love your choice of music for this video. One thing I want to mention is that the NA you're driving is a PERFECT example; few, if any, are in that condition, and if you want something reliably fun, much much safer, has more comfort features, and IMO looks much better, the ND is a no brainer. The car looks incredible. Great job bringing this amazing comparison to us!
I bought my first Miata a month ago, a 2007 NC1, and I love it! I can't stop smiling when I'm driving it. I wish I could've gotten it with less mileage (103k on it when I got it), but I am enjoying every moment of it!
Their joy and enthusiasm is infectious and makes me more optimistic to have any model Miata in the future... But probably still not as my primary daily
the other thing i think is worth mentioning is that now that means many more generations will have the opportunity to own and enjoy their own miata thats not too far off from the original and i think thats just awesome, cant wait to have my own some day
I traded in a NB Miata for my forever-dream car a Porsche 911 997.1. Yes it's a better "car" in all metrics. But as a "fun toy", it just isn't as good as a Miata. If you don't care about performance and all you care about is "taking a drive to go nowhere" and go in back roads because just for the fun on connecting with your environment, an engine and 4 wheels, nothing - nothing beats a Miata for that. I know for a fact I will return to a Miata in a few years, as my kid grow older. It's just that good of smile generator. Buy a Miata if you care about having fun on the road. It's just that good.
100% true, I used to drive a nissan 300zx, went for a test drive in the new miata since they upped the power and I was BLOWNNN AWAY. Sweet talked the dealer into letting my drive alone, less than a week later I was driving a 30ae home - I found one the original buyer canceled because he couldn't fit into it
Brother, you sound exactly like 99.9% of the fanboys and what you say is the usual mantra, but its not real. Miata is not a good car, its a good Miata, full stop. There is no performance, no comfort and all the old rust boxes are falling apart and they are mainly owned by people who can not afford other cars. For me sports car is about emotions and about connection with the environment especially in a roadster. But Miata gives you zero emotions, from outside the looks are really a joke - no one ever said its a good looking car, thus so much aftermarket. From inside its uncomfortable, unspacious and its hard to find a good driving position inside. Bottom line Miata is oversized go cart, which is can be fun at certain moment and certain place but in general its useless as you really cant have a proper experience in it, you really cant go on a proper long road trip in Miata and experience the awesome backgrounds(if they are not behind your house) because sitting in this shitbox for longer than 5hours will just cripple you for rest of your life if you will start thinking about crashing in it than you are in a deep depression as there is no protection and crash in this little death trap means instant death. Last but not least you will not go for a proper road trip in Miata because you bought it mainly as you dont have cash for a better car, thus its a shitbox and you know it would brake somewhere. So as a go cart for driving around your house, yes, but thats gets old very quickly. I have recently start go for a longer road trips mainly to Alps and I have to tell you, thats the real car experience for me, 'living-driving' in the car for hours but yet not being crippled and enjoying it even on a straight road, driving fast on a highway, being able to see great sceneries and when you came across nice back road or maintain road being able to enjoy it. That's for me the ultimate driving experience for me and Miata is simply not made for this. Miata is a cheap quick fix, but not a real solution ;) Keep the Porsche brother, its a car, not a go kart ;)

I've had convertibles in the past but both were automatic (MB 350 and a 911 Cabrio) but man, I love this pure fun sports car.

A 30k modded NA Miata is a deathtrap. Fun as hell but can't compare. You only buy an NA bc you can't afford am ND. Noone would buy an NA now of they had a choice between the two.
I’d take the new one it’s just cooler, it just looks ore aggressive I would only take a soft top new one it looks great and it has blue tooth and a warranty
How did I not watch this a year ago? Love the ND1/2, but the NB is a great place to be. Love the NA and the popups. New or old... Depends on priorities and wrenching ability and desire.
I had the original Miata in 1989. I loved it and everyone who saw it loved it. Put 122,000 fun miles on that car! Once, after a light rain I hit an oil slick making a diagonal left turn too quickly. The car did an immediate 360 and went backwards into a gas station. Didn't hit a thing, radio and motor still running, so off I drove.
I’ve owned my ‘18 ND GT for about 18 months now. It’s my daily driver, and out of about a dozen cars I’ve owned and daily driven, the Miata is my favorite, hands-down. Just picked up my first Miata, a Soul Red ND1 and I am in love. It's the best car I've ever owned or even driven.
You don't drive a Miata, you wear it like a glove.
I'll never get used to people calling it a Miata. Mine was a Japanese import, mx5 Eunos. Fully kitted out and beautiful.
or a condom? and enjoy.
@@JohnnyZenith MX5 Eunos? Come on man, it's the Eunos Roadster, Eunos is the brand
JohnnyZenith I know them only as Miatas. MX-5 throws me off. Hahaha.
Tell me about it. I’m 5’10 185lb, and my NB has a fixed racing seat. There is no graceful way to get in and out lol
I'll take the $2500 miata with $2500 in mods please.

LOL
That NA's condition is beautiful
Mine was too. Woukd have been worth more now. Damn.
This makes me miss my NA so much. i can see the legitimate excitement they get driving it and i know exactly how they feel. RIP my Yukiko
What happened to her?

I bought my first NA back in January. This year has been the most fun I've had with any car lol.
Lots of trips to interstate rest stops I'm guessing.
I also sold mine and regretted it all these years! Bought another last summer and I'm sooooo happy!

Monkeypox is a huge issue in the Miata driving community.
Still coming back to watch this again and again.
The thumbnail looks like two happy best mates who's cars are also happy best mates
The new miata looks happy and the old miata looks like it was just violated lol
That's so wholesomee
I drove my buddies NA 5 years ago summer between highschool and college. I had never driven a rear wheel drive sports car before and I ended up doing a 180 with it (thankfully in the middle of the road so neither us nor the car was hurt). That experience was what set me on my journey to make me qualified to own my Mustang GT PP1 today!
"You get to play with the rear. It's probably the most rear play I'll get all year." I totally understand, bro.
Driving my NA is such a great time every time I get into the car. Its genuinely like driving a road legal gokart. I love miatas so damn much
I am an NA owner on a budget and I dont think that an ND would give me $40K worth more fun...;-))

Thanks!
You guys are better than Grand Tour and invoking old Top Gear. Keep it up.

“Most rear play I’ll get this year”. 😂 The English dude is hilarious.
Just bought my 99 for $2.2k last month and it's great! One of the most fun cars I've ever driven.
Right, I'd love an old miata but with a busy life turnkey is the way to go for most
@@es-zw3mg I am planning to buy 2019 nd after 2 years. The problem with the lowest trim for me is that it come with an open diff.
The NA lacks so many safety features. That matters to me.
@@boygenius538_8 Cuz ur a bitch
Another thing that's really cool about the Miata is its fuel efficiency. It's one of few RWD sports cars that would also be economical to daily drive, which is quite rare.
Amazing car, amazing review, and I love your choice of music for this video. One thing I want to mention is that the NA you're driving is a PERFECT example; few, if any, are in that condition, and if you want something reliably fun, much much safer, has more comfort features, and IMO looks much better, the ND is a no brainer. The car looks incredible. Great job bringing this amazing comparison to us!
12:22 "Orange you glad you bought the 30th anniversary edition" Best line in any Throttle House video ever
You two put a huge smile on my face today. Love just fun Miata! So much fun
Miata is a cheap quick fix, but not a real solution ;)
Keep the Porsche brother, its a car, not a go kart ;)
@@Aluzcz complains about fanboys, behaves exactly like one... good job. Maybe you're just the miserable one here trying to make people who have fun miserable too eh?
