    Price in the US are crazy low. Here in France, a regular NA without rust is sold around 8000€ / 10 000 USD

    • @IdealGrain
      @IdealGrain 3 роки тому +7

      Video is a bit off on the pricing. Depends on region too. A *pristine* or nearly pristine NA can be anywhere between 8-12k in the US, especially for special edition (BRG, M, STO) ones. A solid, mechanically sorted, cosmetic rust only daily driver grade car with little or no mods in the US is about 5-6k sometimes as high as 8 with desirable options like a hardtop or the torsen LSD. Higher than the past, but it's only going to go up. These were mass market cars that were generally not preserved. So many have been heavily modded and many more tracked or crashed, that there's no possible way short of a massive economic crash far worse than covid that these will go down in value again.

      @@rjherche Correct. A lot of people online talk about a "worthwhile" miata purchase being cosmetic rust, 150k+ miles, etc. Some others, like myself, have a much higher definition of "good condition". Those miatas start around 8-9k. Shiny, no rust, low miles, garaged in the winter, bone stock.

    As a loving owner of my NA for 5.5 years, my next one would be an NB, it's a better all around car, just less hyped! A heads up though, later NB diffs are NOT necessarily better than a 1.8 NA or early NBs, lots of people actually consider it a downgrade. They went to a different LSD diff that's more prone to failure for later NB2s and is a bit more finicky. It does have some benefits over a torsen, but for some people a torsen would do better. For most people the difference wouldn't matter though. Regardless, I'll be in NB gang soon!

      The NB is better daily driver, but lacks the character and feel of the original Miata. I have owned several of both and there is a clear reason why NA's are climbing steeply in price over the NB models. The 1.6 revs more freely, is lighter, slightly louder and just feels more like what the designers were trying to obtain.

    I driven every gen Miata and whichever you buy you will enjoy. For me I bought an nb1 intentionally over an nb2, main reasons being weight and I did not want the vvt engine. I love the Miata car culture and I grew up with cars, my dad was a stock car race driver, my first car was a 79 280zx with my second being a 76 280z. Now I’m 42, I’m an automotive journalist and I’ve driven well over 1,000 cars and my Miata is my benchmark and my reset. Short list of things I love, the 5 speed manual is near perfect, the clutch, the hydraulic steering feel, the lightweight and overall feeling I get while driving it. Things like 0-60 and 1/4 miles time used to matter to me when I was 16 but now I couldn’t care less. Great video

    I've had 2 NB's and 5 NA's. It does come down to individual preferences and I agree with Alex that you can't go wrong either way. In retrospect, for racing (assuming it's stock) I'd go with the NB, but for all-around driver's satisfaction I'd go with an NA8. NB's feel a little more solid on the road, but not much. I found myself either wanting more power out of it, or trying different shocks. I loved my white 2000 MX-5 with a manual. The aftermarket "muffler" that came with it was too loud for me. But the power is decent on those NB's. I recently stumbled on the best of both worlds and it seems like a good compromise. A 1997 in Montego Blue Mica Miata with a 1.8, muffler deleted. It's not too loud, the power is just right, and I have no complaints with it other than minor cosmetic issues. My second favorite would actually be the 1.6. It just nails it on that classic Miata feel we've come to know and love: being a tossable, rev-happy, little roadster.

    Alex good info, I have an M edition 1995 i bought in 2019 & a 2000 M edition a month later.$4000 each.i rotate these daily drivers & store them in nov.I like the NA gear ratio on these bumpy, twisty back roads in Maine. Those high pop-up headlights show 300 ft on the hi-beam: a super night racer. I drive the NB alot too,the NB is smoother driving on bumpy roads & i use it if i'm driving down the Interstate. It isn't the woods night racer like the NA, the gearing is off for narrow dangerous roads, but the NB is alot of fun in bigger(well lite) wider roads & i love the way it looks too!

    I own an NB, but certainly appreciate all four generations.
    When it comes to interior design, my least favourite of the three is the NC with its hard plastics, and (to me) cheap looking gauge cluster. This is by no means a dealbreaker - I really like the NC Club…

    It's such a difficult choice for be because of some specific reasons. Firstly where I live all cars older than 30 years old are exempt from taxes, they also only go through an inspection every 24 months instead of every 14. Because of these reasons I could buy an early NA in order to save some money, if I buy an NB then I would go with an NB2 VVT because I think it's the best looking Miata and I want to avoid the 1.6. This car does however need premium petrol so that's an additional cost. At the same time I do plan on daily driving whichever car I choose and the NB is better for that. I also like the pop up headlights but overall I like the NB styling more. A good part about the NB2 is that it's available with the sports package which adds bilstein suspension, an LSD and the 6 speed transmission which would be good since I plan on taking the one I choose to track days and autocross events, the sports package is already set up well for that out of the box. So basically the NB would be more expensive but it would also be better for what I will be using it for. Decisions decisions...

    Bought my unmodified yr 2000 NB1 Roadster manual 5 speed 6 years ago when it had 29,000km on the clock. It has the nice revvy 1.6 engine. In these 6 years the spark generator doodad failed and was a bit expensive to replace, and now the cam position sensor needs replacing so doing the crank angle sensor at the same time. Otherwise apart from the odd degenerated rubber bits that need replacing the car works very well. I get it serviced every 6months at a local Mazda garage. They don't charge much and are very enthusiastic about the car. The car does not accelerate fast, but does corners very well. I usually push the revs to aound 6,500 on acceleration, and so far have only used 5th gear once, when I brought it up here from Tokyo. There are no straight roads where I live, just windy country roads (central mountainous Japan). The steering is absolutely fantastic. The brakes stop the car very well, fortunately. It has a/c but as this area is all above 1,000 metres a.s.l. the summer is cool and a/c is not needed, and besides I always drive with the top down. It also has air bags, a good stereo, comfortable seats, and so on. The heating works well to keep my legs warm in the winter. I don't drive in the snow/ice as I keep summer tyres on it, but is fine when the conditions are clear and crispy. The arm rest coffee cup things are a complete joke, but I don't drive with coffee anyway as I am too busy steering and changing gear ! It had a navigation system but that failed so I am replacing it with a home-made rally timer set up, half done. It does not have an LSD but I am not sure that having one would improve my experience. It is still possibly to buy little-used examples of NBs in Japan, but not NAs, which are now in the most part worn out and over-priced. Most Roadster owners happily wave at each other as we pass by. All the best from Japan.

      I’m in the same boat as you. I’m about to pick up an nb. From what I’ve heard if you want better performance, tires or a suspension set up is better off than modding the engine (if you plan to not boost it). I don’t see a chip tune being useful without other supporting mods. Your better off boosting a 1.8 n getting a proper tune after that. There is no point in buying a 1.6 other than to be special, the 1.8 is the overall better engine hands down

    nb prices are so low in the uk. i bought a 68k miles nb2 in really good condition for £1,500 (around $2,000). u can get a decent condition na for £5,000-6,000 (easily under 100k miles)

      With good condition you mean rotten fenders and sidemembers.
      NBs are rotting inside out. If you can see rust on the outside it is probably not even worth it to repair.

    I see a lot of youtubers/forum members saying that they bought theirs when their car had like 170~200k miles and I'm afraid not to be able to keep that car for several years if it's already that used

    I bought my Miata last month for $5,700. A classic red over tan ‘99 NB1 with 115k miles and in great overall condition. Some new parts, a 5-speed, leather, Bose audio, LSD, 15” wheels, it included a sharp looking fiberglass tonneau cover even... The moment I first sat in it, I was immediately disappointed. I’m 6’6” tall and I just wasn’t sure this was going to work, because my knees were all up in the dash. But I wanted it to work, so I took it for a spin and bought it anyway. It was an inspired purchase, because I’ve loved driving it ever since. After adjusting to it, it actually feels a little bigger on me than that first day.
