The stock steering wheel is a fucking nardi, this kid HAS AN UPGRADED WHEEL and says it’s not needed. He’s an idiot and has zero experience in the automotive world. He is flat out wrong on many of his criticisms.
Hes also wrong about the short throw shifter. A longer knob has nothing to do with the shorter THROW of the shifter. It's about changing the pivot point. Zach literally explains that in the moneypit vid
@James Olelo yeah, this guy is kiiiiinda clueless. The NB nardi wheel is way better than the steering wheel on the NA and bucket seats are a must for anyone tracking/autocrossing seriously unless they want to tear their knees up bracing themselves against the car

I really like that Nolan seems super supportive of your opinion. Your opinion seems to be based on the Miata community and actual facts based on the laws of physics. I respect that. As a fellow car enthusiast and as fairly in experienced car modifier I am happy to have found your channel.
You may have missed the point of the miata build at this point. It was, at the start, for others to follow along and see if the mods are worth putting on their own car. Now he's prepping the car for a turbo. So all the stuff is very necessary
Love this "second opinion" style video! Also, there's nothing wrong with being the second, third, or fourth guy to do a video covering the same aftermarket mod. Everyone brings their own unique angle to things like this. Great content. Keep it up!
That and try explaining your max caster, 1.5 or more degree of negative camber, slight toe-out alignment to the shop tech who is supposed to do everything according to the manual.
Good work on the video quality, unfortunately this feels somewhat shortsighted given that we know that the intended direction of the car is indeed a turbo
Sorry man you don’t know what you’re talking about. String alignments can be extremely accurate if done correctly, and the lifetime alignment deals don’t apply to modified cars and custom alignment specs. The MiataRoadster shifter is widely regarded as the best and most well designed Miata shifter on the market. And apparently you missed where they said all the “wrong” mods are in preparation for forced induction. And please stop calling an open filter under the hood a “cold air intake”. CAI’s have the filter down in the fender well. What you have is a plain hot air intake.
You make a valid argument about the stuff that’s overdone at the end but they’ve mentioned that they’re going to turbo the car. Which means they’ll likely do cams and valves and all of that stuff. They literally have an unlimited budget for that car because they’re making way more money on each video than they spend.
nah his argument is not valid. we are not talking about a rice civic with a fart can on we are talking real car people building real cars. and real cars have all those parts. him trying to justify it being overdone just makes him look like a ricer becaus he tryes to save money on shit that actualy does allot for the car.
@@rampage3337 did you even look at his car? It’s not rice at all. He has a pretty clean car so far, if a bit light on the budget. He has a couple apparent misunderstandings here but it’s mostly a solid video.
@@Frazonediting I think if you’re honest you’d admit that it is a common misunderstanding for people when they hear “short shifter” to think it’s referring to the height of the stick rather than the throw distance. Many cheap “short shifters” are just short stalks which adds to the confusion. Does that misunderstanding that he had make his car rice all the sudden?
I'm not a Miata owner. Unfortunately, I'm just too tall to fit comfortably :( Personally, I see Donut's Money Pit Miata series as kind of a more like basic "how to" series on any old car you might want to upgrade. Zach does a nice job explaining basic concepts to a broader audience, and I do think he stays pretty humble on whether or not a modification has really improved performance or quality of life. In the clutch video, for instance, he anticipated early on that things might actually feel worse after the install. I understand the frustration if the goal were to build a super tight budget autocross/track car, but to be honest, as an average viewer, I didn't even realize that was the original goal. "Money Pit", to me, evokes kind of a Mighty Car Mods feeling of lets turn this nugget into something awesome with the slight caveat of "Was it worth it?" And sometimes the answer is "probably not", which totally makes sense. I don't have any real criticisms for your video other than that there's really no need for the hate. You make a lot of great points, things I never would have considered as I'm not personally a Miata owner interested in tracking or autocross. There's just far too much negativity in the world right now, so I would encourage you to find positive ways of presenting your arguments. Focusing on the purpose of the build, for instance, allows you to just present what's necessary and what's a waste of money. I don't think that Money Pit intends to misinform. As Nolan states in his comment, with Covid forcing as all to stay home, it appears the original pitch for the series evolved into something a bit broader, which makes sense. And like Nolan states, don't be afraid to cover the same installs on your own channel. If I'm researching a particular install topic, I watch just about every video I can find on it. Everyone offers varying levels of knowledge and experience. You clearly have some of both. There's more than enough space on UA-cam for more install videos with differing perspectives. Keep it up man!
Not gonna rag on this video (because I don't upload myself) But the Money Pit series is actually super dope from a Miata standpoint. Why? It shows me everything I'm thinking about doing to my car. Shows all the possibilities, how to do it, and is it worth it.
This series isn’t solely for Miata owners, or even meant to be *reccomended* mods. I don’t own a Miata, but I learned SO much from the money pit series about what it means to maintain your car, mod it, and what the car community simply does. Two years ago when I became a car guy, this series helped me learn quickly and reliably. I am forever grateful, and Zach and the boys did a wonderful job keeping their content real and genuine. I appreciate their work!
Stumbled across this video while looking for "how does a clutch work". And I absolutely liked it! I owned 2 NBs so far and just got my first NA and I could not agree more with you. Everyone seems to have more budget for their budget built than I do. And it's hard to build along when you have different needs and expectations in your car. The British racing green / gold JR11 combo is just beautiful. Thank you for your content and sharing your opinion!
Good video. It's always great to hear peoples opinions, get more perspectives and ultimately learn more. Thanks for making it, you've got yourself a new sub. :)
I’d like to stand up for the money pit series and... *quivers* Zack’s beautiful blue eyes and flowing hair- And to the fact that donut media started like a buzzfeed for cars for me, then slowly led me to the money pit, which is the sole reason I know cars, car parts, and what things do and effect. I’m super grateful for the series, it’s made everything entertaining and easy to digest...I’m also planning to get the screaming chainsaw Mx-5 now.
there is an episode in money pit, that zac said "is this worth it to be a car enthusiast'" (something like that when he almost give up in one of his vid), they just want to show new car enthusiast a how to and what can you do to your car in general. i think its what money pit focused on
I watched donut from the start and that was a bit over 2 years ago I believe and they stared small and made great content to make it big. Also they probably have sponsors
Idk robert this video seems legit but its too comparative of a video instead of being straight to the point i get that you are trying to get views but bashing other cars and owners for the fact that they set up their vehicles to their liking is baffling to me. You seem quiet knowledgable but the principle remains that you did seem a bit eager to jab at donut media when they do a really great job at informing the majority.
A few notes. Zach is turboing the car. The megasquirt and brakes was the best investment he could have made. Also the highest na car I've seen is 250whp.
@@ipunch99 he said that the highest naturally aspirated cars have 180 horse power. I personally know someone with 250whp. I think you've got confused by the na part lol
Just FYI, a longer shift nob can still have a shorter "throw" than the stock shifter by changing the fulcrum point (for example the miata roadster short shifter). Not sure which one they used in the video but having the longer shift nob (don't have to move your hand far from the wheel) with a shorter throw than stock ia definitely an upgrade.
They are going to turbocharge the miata, Zach even said it in the intake manifold episode, that probably explains you some of those mods you didn't understand
In reference to the point you made about alignments, many places that offer “lifetime” alignments only offer this service for vehicles with original equipment suspension. Most places like this are not set up to align customized vehicles, as their software is designed to hit OEM specifications. Their alignments are for the everyday/commuter vehicle and their main goal with aligning vehicles is typically to help tires last as long as possible (aside from also minimizing pull and ensuring vehicles operate safely). Just pointing out so others know because I’ve seen many times where customers buy an alignment when they still have OEM parts and then they modify and lower etc. and then their warranty for their lifetime alignment is no longer covered. Definitely look for a place that offers this service but also regularly works with modified vehicles as well to avoid any headache :)
You obviously paid no attention to the part where they explained how short throw shifters are not affected by shifter height. It's the ratio between the movement above the fulcrum and below. I'll assume you don't understand rocker arm ratios on pushrod engines for the same reason.
yeah he is pretty rice. trying to tell you that you don't need all these mods becaus ''save money'' like bitch please it's a project car you do need to put som effort in to it and all of the shit he mentioned does a huge diffarance. the dude clearly knows nothing about cars becaus allot of his points where even wrong. like the big brake kit for example like he thinks bigger brakes just make you stop faster but clearly don't understand the other benefits of a bigger brake
The clutch was given to them for free by the manufacturer, and Zach even said it won't be worth it unless you need it. And the harness was his choice and he even said that his audience should only get that only if they want to. The brakes was just to get safer. And it's just to help starter car guys to make a project car themselves.
to be fair I had track ready EG6 which weighs about the same as the MX5 and 280mm front rotors were enough for the 190HP engine. The braking is mostly done by the front(stock calipers) and I never felt brake fade. Tires overheat way before that point. 300mm rotor on a 2300 pound car would be recommended/necessary for a setup with more than 200hp. The Sway bars are also kinda not quite necessary. Depending on the application and suspension spring stiffness adding a sway bar can totally ruin the car balance. This is something you can add at a later stage, if you the car needs it, its not the first thing you add even before going on track. Steering wheel can also be sketchy, if you buy a bad one, smaller wheel might feel strange and ruin your perception on where the tires are pointing during oversteer.
The thing is that is rly hard to get aspirated hp without a turbo or engine touch so yeah that's why some things are expensive af and don't give you much hp
I'm not taking advice from a guy that buys XXR's and sticks them out from the fenders over an inch, just to tell me mods that are worth it for track driving, WHILE not even being on lowering springs.
and thinking bigger brakes is not gona benefit stoping distance and lower the risk of brake fade. + he litteraly talked trash about having proper safty harnesses and shit
Cold air intakes do increase HP. Not by a remotely large margin but they do increase around 5-15HP depending on the air quality around you and location you put it. It takes the air and acts as a ported runners plenum and cools the air condensing it. Condensing the air adds more O2 molecules meaning more power.
Ok, yes this works, in order to get more views on your channel. First get yourself a dead-cat for the mic. The wind noise sucks. And as others mentioned. He is going to turbo the car. That's why he is adding those "useless" mods. People that make videos based on other peoples videos.. meh... Edit: Also get the A/V in sync.
A cold air intake is only for sound and honestly they sound great. I’ve never put an exhaust on, just getting the car to 4k+ with the intake is all I wanted

That the mods don't make sense to you and so they're wrong and bad. Hopefully we can agree that it's better than being a clapped out stance miata
I think you gave a lot of valid points but I think some of their decisions revolves around Turbo charging the car and also to generally educate people for other cars other than the Miata
Can’t help but feel this video is just a long a mostly polite way of saying “I’m a little jealous”. Money pit is a blank slate for anyone to use an example of things to do for your project. It just so happens to be a Miata. I’ve watched them all from the beginning and they’ve been mostly helpful.

To your comment on the turbo kit/supercharger kit, the mods prior the their turbo kit they installed on the miata were to increase structural integrity and handling before the turbo, so if you're gonna turbo you're miata or whatever you're gonna turbo the "money pit" Playlist is a perfect step by step of everything you should do before installing your turbo.

lol yeah it really showed that he isn't all there on how a short throw shifter works. I suspect a lot of persons share his understanding of it.
That is where I reached maximum eye rolling. Didn't they even address this in the video?! lol
this is when i turned it off
Don’t understand about what he is talking about, saying it’s a waste of money and shit, like isn’t the series called “money pit miada”
Dude is just super annoying and wants to complain because as he clearly states, "All these other youtubers have more budget then me," he's simply upset he can't spen the amount of money they can, so now he wants to throw a little nudge like a 3 year old at recess.
Dude, what part of money pit don't you understand? They don't try to make perfect car, they just make series of videos installing all kind of stuff for our entertainment. There go money pit, as endless pit of money spent on a Miata. Do your stuff and enjoy, and make some mo powah babeh
You mentioned doing this for a "budget" when the show is called Money Pit...
To be fair, Zach has done some stuff multiple ways showing how you might be able to save a couple bucks here and there, but yeah, anyone trying to modify cars or considers themselves a car enthusiast accepts the fact that they are kinda just throwing their money away.
“The stock wheel is fine” “miata’s sound terrible” those are both opinions not reasons
Unless you change the entire exhaust with more proper air flow shape exhaust, the sound of small old stock exhaust its too ricey lol
Imho tho

This guy is just mad bc he doesn’t have pop ups
XD
Pop pop pop pop Up and Down HEADLIGHTS!
💯

i was thinking the same
Having a longer knob on the shifter doesn’t change it at all it’s about below the bearing
Yeah, I was like "wtf" the length doesn't matter, he was changing the throw, and he even proved he could shift faster in the same video
For real, when he started talking about the short shifter mod and saying that doing that didnt make a difference because he put a longer knob got me all sorts of confused lmaoo. I thought this guy knows about his shit.

@@alexeg3537 Eh, I'll let someone else do it.
NA is the generation. Like Mark I for Golf owners.
However, in this case, youre still okay, because his Miata will eventually be a turbo car, which this video doesn't seem to get. He's doing set up first, then going to turbo it when he knows it will handle it.
@@poodn4559 bro in the video when he is saying na he means naturally aspirated which means the car doesn’t have a turbo or super charger and yes I know the first gen is called na miata but the miata in this video his miata isn’t a first gen it’s a nb miata which is a second generation

You do realize that some ppl have different mods of prior depending on what others say like "Ow, that mod is worth it, uhhh according to someone".
I mean it’s crazy how he’s like “ if you want real power put a turbo kit in” but that’s what donut is trying to do LMAO

Alright ri$erboi. Because your content seems legit I am going to subscribe. I am really happy that Donut Media has not forgotten their humble roots and gave you a no holds bar response.
Keep it up!
8:46 I spotted my dad
Wait
Lmao
Hi Greg
That's your dad too?
But Zach is setting his up to be turboed.. all the mods he's done is in prep for that. Pluss the show is called money pit for a reason lol
Firestone only does lifetime alignments if you keep a stock suspension set up. Firestone refuses to align cars with aftermarket suspension.
Who tf trusts firestone to work on your car anyways lmao.
A CAI can also be a filter with some form of shielding to the heat of the engine.
Can’t believe a word out of this guys mouth. His Miata doesn’t have pop up headlights
@@BigStreams_ bruh he said that putting a longer knob on the shifter defeats the purpose of a short throw shifter like tf
I don’t like haters and people who bash on others that’s why I barely listen to Scotty Kilmer
How tall are you Jesse? I think you would be surprised how tall people can be and still comfortably daily a miata
Not gonna rag on this video (because I don't upload myself)
But the Money Pit series is actually super dope from a Miata standpoint. Why? It shows me everything I'm thinking about doing to my car. Shows all the possibilities, how to do it, and is it worth it.
I like how honest this is. Not many people want to go against giants. You give a lot of information. Thank you
A larger brake kit isn't just for stopping power... it's for it's ability to cool and stay cool during excessive braking.... like, from autocross.
You should of watched the first episode more closely when Zac explained tire and rim sizing...
Make your videos bro, Noone cares if donut media made one. You shouldve still made those install videos!

And I absolutely liked it!
I owned 2 NBs so far and just got my first NA and I could not agree more with you. Everyone seems to have more budget for their budget built than I do. And it's hard to build along when you have different needs and expectations in your car.

there is an episode in money pit, that zac said "is this worth it to be a car enthusiast'" (something like that when he almost give up in one of his vid), they just want to show new car enthusiast a how to and what can you do to your car in general. i think its what money pit focused on
It's when he fixed his power steering leak.

As a owner of a 88 XR3i, I gotta say that power steering would be nice sometimes.
Definitely look for a place that offers this service but also regularly works with modified vehicles as well to avoid any headache :)
i think you have to race Zack now.
You obviously paid no attention to the part where they explained how short throw shifters are not affected by shifter height. It's the ratio between the movement above the fulcrum and below. I'll assume you don't understand rocker arm ratios on pushrod engines for the same reason.
I wouldnt listen to this dude. I mean just look at his fitment
yeah he is pretty rice. trying to tell you that you don't need all these mods becaus ''save money'' like bitch please it's a project car you do need to put som effort in to it and all of the shit he mentioned does a huge diffarance. the dude clearly knows nothing about cars becaus allot of his points where even wrong. like the big brake kit for example like he thinks bigger brakes just make you stop faster but clearly don't understand the other benefits of a bigger brake
boyyyy i know he's not talking shit with that much wheel gap lmaooooooooo
Hey man, I gotta say it a donut media fan, I loved this video... Looking forward to watching more
The clutch was given to them for free by the manufacturer, and Zach even said it won't be worth it unless you need it. And the harness was his choice and he even said that his audience should only get that only if they want to. The brakes was just to get safer. And it's just to help starter car guys to make a project car themselves.
Tbh I just feel he wanted the attention to get the views
to be fair I had track ready EG6 which weighs about the same as the MX5 and 280mm front rotors were enough for the 190HP engine.
17” wheels on your car 😂
Massive brakes are not for stopping better, but to stop repeatedly reliably.
how do you have such little views you deserve a lot more
Are you sure about that?
A cold air intake is only for sound and honestly they sound great. I’ve never put an exhaust on, just getting the car to 4k+ with the intake is all I wanted
I watched your video, and the quality is great. I felt more like this was just saying your opinion is more important/ criticizing someone who is not hiding their mistakes they make. That the mods don't make sense to you and so they're wrong and bad. Hopefully we can agree that it's better than being a clapped out stance miata
I think you gave a lot of valid points but I think some of their decisions revolves around Turbo charging the car and also to generally educate people for other cars other than the Miata
8:40 if I remember he wants the miata for autocross and street use to
Can’t help but feel this video is just a long a mostly polite way of saying “I’m a little jealous”. Money pit is a blank slate for anyone to use an example of things to do for your project. It just so happens to be a Miata. I’ve watched them all from the beginning and they’ve been mostly helpful.
Cold air intakes are great imo. No power gains but the throttle response is way better with an aftermarket intake
as a D-hole and a former miata owner, I gotta say automotive youtuber who drives a mazda miata #86,523 is hitting the nail on the head with this one. That beign said, the money pit miata is going to be turbo'd at some point and its just fun to watch the build anyway
I feel like this dude just made a video to talk trash about the donut media miata and the mods they did🥱
To your comment on the turbo kit/supercharger kit, the mods prior the their turbo kit they installed on the miata were to increase structural integrity and handling before the turbo, so if you're gonna turbo you're miata or whatever you're gonna turbo the "money pit" Playlist is a perfect step by step of everything you should do before installing your turbo.
I don't know where you live, but here in the South Bay Area, the lifetime alignment cost you put in your video doesn't even cover one alignment.
I actually like this, a bit of a love letter to Donut, but also an opinion piece with objective goals in mind.
