You guys have done a great job with the video. Very impressed. So to add my take (Nick from Skuzzle). The job didnt take a full month of labour. We had paying customers in around phil who needed dyno time and ecu's and turbos etc. We have recommended from day 1 to take phil to a bodyshop for paint but have applied a red coat for now as we dont have the facilities for this scale of paintwork. what do you mean by "uneconomical"? how much did it cost, and can you really find mx5 NA's that aren't rusted? all of the ones i see for sale in EU have a serious rust problem. Paying more for a "better preserved" mx5 NA doesn't solve this issue.

there is a red 1997 NA MX5 in Germany with 9 027 kms driven, being stored in fully air conditioned garage for 15 years, it costs 14.985 € maybe that car is cheaper than restoration we saw, anyway there is one more Miata on the road now, thumbs up for that
This was what spelled the end of the line for my old MX-5. It would've cost way more than the value of the car to repair so it was 'see ya later' to Marv. Lesson here? Never ever buy an old UK spec MX-5. They are almost all in this state underneath. Get a Eunos if you can find one. You just might avoid these issues.

Often times wet sanding and using abrasive buffing compounds with cutting pads and slowly making your way up to less abrasive compounds and pads and then finishing if off with polish and wax will give it a mirror finish with no more orange peal effect.
Just like the MG's of the 60's, 70's and 80's that the MX5 took over from its full of rust!!! You guys should come look at my 1969 mg midget!! Lovely but a little rust here and there
Yeah, this is a 25 year old hair dressers car, but think about it this way: In the mid 80's/ early 90's do you think many people gave a damn about cars like Novas, Mavericks, Dusters, S800s, Darts, Escorts (EU), Cortinas, etc from the late 60s and early 70s? Pretty much only enthusiasts did. When I was a kid you usually apologized when somebody said they had a Nova. Enthusiasts cars, no matter how entry-level, will always have love and will find a home to live on in, and in 20 years when this Miata is still driveable, this work to save it from the bin will be much appreciated.
Uh Sayonara mean good bye (long terms) best to use "Ja ne"(good bye short terms) I'm not a grammar nazi I thought it be cool to pass on something I've learn. Cheers
Tommy Le Lol I don't know about cars? I was saying the work he had done here must have cost around 20 grand and that it was not worth it. I know he could have bought a small fleet of Miatas for the money, or probably 2 or 3 collector quality Miatas. If he spent 5-7k on his car he spent too much (unless they cost more in the UK). Either way, my comment was pretty obviously directed to the first commenter, not the OP.
It's NOT orange peel. It is stone chip paint that's made to keep paint from chipping from rocks and debris. All NA Miata's have that paint on the lower portion of the door down.
That wouldn't matter to me, there are right hand drive cars in North America that people drive, and in sure in Britain there are people who drive left hand drive cars, because they imported them. But if you don't want the steering wheel on the other side, because the shifter, wiper stalk and light stalk are different I know what you mean, the first time I drove a right hand drive car, I kept turning the wipers on when I wanted to use the turn signal lol
Leafy Greens Depends, if it's in LA or San Diego there's salt in the air, that's something to worry about. Just saying Phoenix is the best place to buy them.
"effectively as good as it was when it came out of the factory" A well executed job will be always be scene in the workers' faces showing pride and admiration for what was accomplished. The looks on the shop workers' faces says it all. It's SHIT work to do, no matter how well intention-ed the repair is, 95% of these kind of repairs are fudged and cobbled somewhere, never amounting to what the installer could have hope it to be in the beginning of the job. Unless these guys buttered up the insides with corrosion inhibitors of some kind, it will likely rust out AGAIN at every spot where there is a weld. Don't Ever get it wet. When you weld, the high heat BURNS AWAY any kind of protection from rust, this is why the factory "dips" the bodies in a primer type bath after they are manufactured. The gray coloring you see inside once they cut the rocker panel/sill off is the protective coating. It is extremely rare to find someone who is concerned enough about the work 2-3yrs down the road to care enough to apply internal corrosion protection. The bottom line is these repairs are labor intensive to even do a 75-85% job. 4 days turned into over a month. I really feel badly for the guys who worked on the car. They obviously were NOT HAPPY with it, just relieved the abomination was LEAVING, releasing thier shops' car lift that it took hostage for weeks during the repairs. They all look like they have been eating shit sandwiches that the owner of this albatross has been feeding them, not to mention that look of awakening from a comatose nightmare of a serious rust repair job, that they lost money on. This thing should be renamed "Phill-er", after all the auto body filler that has been "smothered" into this heap.
Older Mazdas are really infamous for rusting away like insane. When you said you boughjt a '95, I immediately thought "hell no, you have no idea what you are getting into".
Alex Kersten I totally feel you, I did the same thing with a bike. So I know the "I'm in so far, I just need to fix this and its done". And a couple thousand euros later you think to yourself: I could have had a way better bike. Like I said, I get it, but when you're finished, you're probably in Boxster territory.
My MX-5 is in a similar state. It had been patched and bogged to hell and back by the previous owner, and he'd hidden it well, but never really dealt with it. So I when I started grinding and cutting, all I found was more rust. It's gonna get scrapped. It's beyond saving, unless you're a passionate with access to a real garage and lots of time.
Thats rust?! Ha thats adorable. Should see my two cars here in northern michigain in the states. I got a pile of rusted metal flakes and yet i havent scrapped neither of my cars. But it looks good and glad to know that the seatbelt mount was fixed.
The single most important thing you need to do to THAT particular MX 5 is get rid of those power headlights and replace that front fascia with the newer style WITH HEADLAMPS AND FOG LIGHTS.YOURS looks like an AC rear ended a Fiero... (And I am an MX 5 owner...so much love...replace the lights bro!) Alos, I did find it ironic you named your call Phil. In this episode, we learned its FULL name "Phil McKraken"... :)

Nice to see Phil is saved! But he could do with that paint sorting, doesn't look great!
lol the amount of money he spent doing this could have bought another MX-5
It wouldn't be the same. That mx-5 is worth more to him then just its sum in parts.
Robbie Gobeli Is it worth 20 grand more? Because I doubt this cost any less.
MAEguy ........this year and model costs 10k in mint condition, his is around 5-7k buy anothr one. You must not knoe about cars and money
That would ruin the series! Its about him and hos journey with phil and all the problems he will face
Tommy Le
Lol I don't know about cars? I was saying the work he had done here must have cost around 20 grand and that it was not worth it. I know he could have bought a small fleet of Miatas for the money, or probably 2 or 3 collector quality Miatas. If he spent 5-7k on his car he spent too much (unless they cost more in the UK). Either way, my comment was pretty obviously directed to the first commenter, not the OP.
Great work there from the guys at Skuzzle, that rust was worse than my '79 Fiesta haha
12:00
with that much orange peel you could get lots of zest for some great cakes
Ryukachoo That's called stone chip...
It's NOT orange peel. It is stone chip paint that's made to keep paint from chipping from rocks and debris. All NA Miata's have that paint on the lower portion of the door down.
loving this mx5 series u r doing
For how much this probably cost, I bet it's cheaper to import a Miata to Britain from somewhere that cars don't rust. Like California or Florida
Those places rust like hell, I recommend Arizona or New Mexico.
The AE86 of Mt. Akina I RECOMMEND NEW ENGLAND. BECAUSE I LOVE PAIN.
The AE86 of Mt. Akina rust in ca? maybe visit ca first before you spew rubbish out of your mouth?
Leafy Greens Depends, if it's in LA or San Diego there's salt in the air, that's something to worry about. Just saying Phoenix is the best place to buy them.
looking forward on the next episode, love this!
"effectively as good as it was when it came out of the factory"
A well executed job will be always be scene in the workers' faces showing pride and admiration for what was accomplished.
It is extremely rare to find someone who is concerned enough about the work 2-3yrs
down the road to care enough to apply internal corrosion protection.
Rockitanski EXACTLY this guy got fucked from the very beginning
I think that look on their faces was “I’m high as hell right now wish this camera wasn’t in my face” lol
Older Mazdas are really infamous for rusting away like insane. When you said you boughjt a '95, I immediately thought "hell no, you have no idea what you are getting into".
Anyone 2018?
Maaaayyyybbbbbeee
not sure
i love a restoration story that is a bit insane :D
Not trying to be a hater, but I would have scrapped that car and gotten a rust-free example...
2:02 Look at the wheels. Apparently Mr Clarkson isn't the only one who likes that look
ur mum told u that?😕
Miata became beautiful!
Step 1: Buy a piece of crap
Step 2: Put a crapton of money in that piece of crap.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Still have a piece of crap.
Benedocta OK, but it's my piece of crap and I love it.
9:46 - 10:28 is that the same music played during that top gear indestructible hilux episode? when it was on the beach
This shit is taking way too long. I'm starting to lose interest. Come on Alex, speed things up a bit, not just the Miata!
Cant wait to see how this car is going to be
Thats to cover the thunder bird 😂 and the union strikes 😂
Definitely inspiring to me knowing the rust on my car can someday be salvaged with the right guys, just need the cash!
***** Give Skuzzle a call. They had SO much fun doing mine, that I'm sure they'd pay YOU to do more ;)
Haha thanks alex!! Unfortunately I'm in the states but maybe I'll ship my Jennifer over sometime! Love your miata BRO!
This is why I love Texas, hardly any rust on most cars :D
11:59 The state of that paint job!
I love the lack of care like a real shop would do. Grinding next to glass and exposed interior. Not even taking the car apart 🙄 etc, what a riot!
This is a good video. I love the expressions. The car will be beautiful again
I totally feel you here, my 01 Honda Prelude has some small rust bubbles in the rear wheel well area, I want to get it cut and replaced....scared to see the price!
Phil is looking really sick now
