    Watch for the Funny clip @ 25:53
    An epic 2 day trip on the Mirage Sportfishing where 17 anglers catch 75 California Halibut and 37 White Seabass. Average size for the Halibut was 30-35lbs, largest going 57lbs. We fished Santa Rosa Island and just had an EPIC Halibut bite.
    I thought our trip last year was epic -- • Mirage sportfishing - ...
    This trip flat out destroyed that trip.
    Thanks to the Mirage crew and team for a trip of a lifetime, my second with them. You can find them at miragesportfishing.com or at ciscos.com.
    Thanks for watching!!

      There is good fishing like that most years I have never seen a year where there hasn't been some wsb halibut or yellowtail action at some point in the year. I live in SB and 60-62 is common during spring-summer... Just saying

    • @llllllllllllllIlIlIl
      @llllllllllllllIlIlIl 9 років тому

      Rob's Fishing Channel
      True, the fishing has really been awesome this year in local waters, in some cases the best ever seen in recent memory, but that is due to the current El Nino (Which is now weakening as we speak) and water temps that have been well above average since back in March and April. There were even a few Wahoo (A fish never before seen in the waters north of Baja) caught near Catalina Island this summer, but again only due to a rare meteorological event we sadly don't see enough of these days.

    I've been looking for halibut on the east coast for 15 years north of Cape Cod Bay not a one. I imagine the fishery was just like yours before the east coast halibut fishery was decimated. Take care.

    • @robertyoon
      @robertyoon  10 років тому +2

      Hey Mr00destruct0, fortunately California Halibut has been on the rise. They use to fish them with a bottom trawler, but restrictions on commercial fishing anywhere near the islands have been cut off. So Southern California halibut population has been on the rise in the outer islands of So Cal. This is one of the better recorded historical fishing days for halibut in so cal. Hopefully it will always be this good!

    Once again Rob...Nice video and killer fishing...My 8 day in June plans got slammed, so I'm changing it to a 3 1/2 and looking to fish the channel islands a couple of days too. You can never get on the Mirage and I was wondering if you have ever fished the Pacific Islander??? From Fresno so if you could lead me to the right boat, that would be cool...Vacation is June 12-24...Tim

    • @robertyoon
      @robertyoon  10 років тому

      First of all, there's a reason why the Mirage is hard to get on. It means everyone wants to get on the Mirage. There are 2 spots open on one of their 2 day trips in Jun 2nd 2014. I recommend that. I would also call and see if you can get on standby if that date doesnt work. As for the Pacific Islander, I have ridden it before. It is a larger more comfortable boat. They do alright. I'll take the uncomfortable Mirage any day.

    • @marksilva7135
      @marksilva7135 2 роки тому

      The Mirage is adopting a new policy. If you have been on they’re boat once already you can’t go on it again for two years. From the last time. Even if you are booked already you will be receiving a notice that you ha e been taken off it’s schedule until two years from the last trip you were on

    great vid, was wondering what reel you would recommend to put on a 8' seeker mgc series jig stick? i want to make a setup for wsb, halibut, yellowtail

    • @thesolanaproductions
      @thesolanaproductions 10 років тому

      i was looking into the avet reels, but if you could recommend any other that would be awesome. want to stay generally affordable, less than $200

    • @robertyoon
      @robertyoon  10 років тому

      ***** First off, what is your rod rated for? Is it the 15-25 or 25-40? If its the 15-25, I would recommend AVET SX which can be had for 149$ brand new. If its the 25-40 I'd probably recommend the MXL which is 165$ brand new. You can always look for used gear, which you can probably get at a much cheaper price. There are other brands that might be cheaper, but Im not familiar with the model #'s too look at. There's newell (great for casting on 8ft rod) and theres also Penn reels. If its for WSB, Halibut & Yellowtail, I would definitely go mid size reel like the avet MXL. You can go real cheap and get a Penn Jigmaster for around 60$. The Penn squall also looks like a decent price. Visit your local tackle store and let them know how much you want to spend. They'll know how to best serve you.

    • @thesolanaproductions
      @thesolanaproductions 10 років тому

      Thanks for your help, I actually just ordered the avet mxj single speed and my rod is rated for 15-25. Hope that works out well, and in knowing that, what line would you put on that setup for wsb, halibut, and yellowtail. Last question, I promise! Thanks.

    • @robertyoon
      @robertyoon  10 років тому

      ***** First thing I would do is put on 45-60lb spectra to the brim and have like maybe 10-20 yards of mono on top. One thing about your setup, your rod isn't very strong. Your gonna have a hard time on big yellows and big WSB or even tuna. You're gonna need the extra line capacity spectra will give you. Thanks for all the questions. I will probably make a video out of it because im sick of answering the same questions.

    The first Halibut I saw was in BC and it was 60lbs but they told me that in northern BC they could get some that were 250lbs but they didn't bring them onboard they would string them to the hull of the boat and shoot them in the head. It apparently became the way to do it after a boat brought a big one on board and when it thrashed it broke a guys neck killing him instantly.

      Hey Vic, we usually go in groups of 3-4 depending on the trip. Sometimes the boat is chartered, most of the times it isn't. I do go with friends and family, but usually its never the same people. Me and my bro fish alot, and if others want to tag along, they do. We usually have trips picked out 3-9 months in advance, and we let our fishing friends/family know. Thats how we do it. Thanks for watching and may your nouc mam be delicous~

      On an overnight, usually they fish anywhere between 20-24 people. On a 2 day trip they usually fish 16-18 people. Book early...The schedule usually comes out in January and fills up fast.

    As an avid angler, and one that would like to see the oceans survive for longer than only a few more generations, I would have liked to have seen some catch-and-release. Beautiful fish, and a great haul, but how can we expect it to survive if we keep everything, and give nothing back???

      Taylor Posey why do you think sportfishing has quotas and limits? if you think that sportfishing has no impact on stocks at all, it is you who have no clue. Proper management is essential, but I do agree that the commercial fishing fleets need to be reigned in and have much lower quotas. And trawlers need to be banned. They rape the ocean indiscriminitely.

    • @HoxFeesh
      @HoxFeesh 9 років тому

      Smelt are an AWESOME baitfish for halibut, and everything else swimming around. You can have them in a bucket without a pump, change the water every half hour, and they still go ballistic on a hook. You can't say the same for chovies, dines, or squid because all three need constant fresh water via a pump to stay alive. Growing up broke and fishing from jetties or piers taught me that smelt were FREE to catch (dough bait), more hardy (no pump needed, can make multiple casts with same bait), and most importantly, CONSISTENTLY CATCH FISH. End rant.

      +shoopwhoopX Maybe for a 3/4 day. Full day trips are closer to 100$. All depends on where you go and how many people you fish with. The more people, the cheaper it is. Its also much more annoying fishing with 70 people than say 20.

    One hell of a So Cal halibut trip. That's a really nice grade of fish. Mirage is a really good operation. I really like how the halibut gaffing is done. The deckie is taking some care to not stick the fish in the loins. I like that; hate it when some careless gaffing ruins the fillets. Thanks for posting. Also, to the poster who thinks these are chickens, well, they would be if you are fishing Pacific halibut, but these are California butts, a different species.

    • @robertyoon
      @robertyoon  10 років тому

      Hey Corb, thanks for watching. You nailed it spot on. Mirage is a quality operation and they know how to gaff species perfectly. These were definitely not chickens, but more like BARN DOORS. TIGHT LINES!!!

    Limits of California Halibut is 5 per person per day. We do catch, fillet and release. This is not why species die. Commercial fishing is why species die.The reason why the fish exist in such large numbers is because in the last few years they banned trawling and long lining in the Channel islands, thus there is a explosion of population of Halibut in Channel Islands. We would never catch this many halibut when trawling and long lining were in place. The population has increased tremendously
