An epic 2 day trip on the Mirage Sportfishing where 17 anglers catch 75 California Halibut and 37 White Seabass. Average size for the Halibut was 30-35lbs, largest going 57lbs. We fished Santa Rosa Island and just had an EPIC Halibut bite.
I thought our trip last year was epic -- • Mirage sportfishing - ...
This trip flat out destroyed that trip.
Thanks to the Mirage crew and team for a trip of a lifetime, my second with them. You can find them at miragesportfishing.com or at ciscos.com.
Thanks for watching!! - Спорт
Awesome. I got into one of these trips on the Mirage and got limits! Great boat and crew!
Thank you for posting this awesome video. It's fun doing this on UA-cam!
For sure im gonna book a trip with this boat this coming summer. Cant wait to catch seabass and halibut. Caught many tunas the past couple of years but never seabass or halibut.
book it booking.sportfishingreport.com/sales/
The best boat in the channel islands fleet the best boat in the central coast of California in my opinion. See you Sunday Tucker. Thank you for this video.
People are gonna be talkin about this trip for awhile! Awesome
Great video! Looks like a killer day with some awesome eats.
Thanks for watching!
nice catch, loved to watch it, thanks for posting....
+bryan crasta Thanks brotha!

Looks like the Mirage knows the spot for these gigantic Halibut! Sweet!
they sure do
Awesome bite. I love halibut.

Thanks for watching GetBitSportfishing. You're videos are pretty awesome too. Keep up the good work and ignore the hater comments lol.
Thanks for watching a couple of minutes then. The video was made to please the fisherman on the boat who caught the fish. Its long because we caught so many!
Nice haul! No wonder why mirage is always FULLY booked...
8:54 had me dying!! You guys are hillarious
Nice fish man. I need to to rod and reel it next summer been spearing too much.
Very nice capt knows his spots great job by the deckhands
Thanks for watching Melissa!! Tight lines and BIG FISH!!
Wow! What a great day of fishing!
Thanks Janet!
Its great to see the waters off the Ventura / Santa Barbara coast (Which almost never get above 58 degrees these days) cough up something other than Rockfish, Lingcod and Sanddabs.
Thanks Brian. Ventura has been producing some quality fish of late
There is good fishing like that most years I have never seen a year where there hasn't been some wsb halibut or yellowtail action at some point in the year. I live in SB and 60-62 is common during spring-summer... Just saying
Rob's Fishing Channel
True, the fishing has really been awesome this year in local waters, in some cases the best ever seen in recent memory, but that is due to the current El Nino (Which is now weakening as we speak) and water temps that have been well above average since back in March and April. There were even a few Wahoo (A fish never before seen in the waters north of Baja) caught near Catalina Island this summer, but again only due to a rare meteorological event we sadly don't see enough of these days.
I've been looking for halibut on the east coast for 15 years north of Cape Cod Bay not a one. I imagine the fishery was just like yours before the east coast halibut fishery was decimated. Take care.
Hey Mr00destruct0, fortunately California Halibut has been on the rise. They use to fish them with a bottom trawler, but restrictions on commercial fishing anywhere near the islands have been cut off. So Southern California halibut population has been on the rise in the outer islands of So Cal. This is one of the better recorded historical fishing days for halibut in so cal. Hopefully it will always be this good!
At 2:30 ....more people who fish should know that trick...if your line has some one elses hook on it just shake left and right and it will fall right off.....but only if it is just the hook
its a great trick
Damn that was a great trip!
Sure was!
What rig and bait did you guys use for this trip
How are the these guys taking so much halibut? The possession limit in SoCal is 5 per person. I'm fairly certain they don't have 15 ppl on that boat
Read the description it was a 2 day trip with 17 anglers. It was less than 1 day limits if you calculate it.
I've been wanting to fish on this trip for a while. When are the best times to go and what is the price for a 2 day like this one?
All the years I've been fishing So Cal waters and I've never been in a halibut bite that could have been called more than good. We had 14 once at Rosa (Late 80's) and none over 30lbs. They just don't like me!
When is the best time to go halibut fishing on the mirage ?
hi, Rob's, i just wondering do you go out fishing on the weekday, me and my son thinking going to fishing with your boat in june,
Yes, We usually fish on a weekday when there is less boat pressure.
Once again Rob...Nice video and killer fishing...My 8 day in June plans got slammed, so I'm changing it to a 3 1/2 and looking to fish the channel islands a couple of days too. You can never get on the Mirage and I was wondering if you have ever fished the Pacific Islander??? From Fresno so if you could lead me to the right boat, that would be cool...Vacation is June 12-24...Tim
First of all, there's a reason why the Mirage is hard to get on. It means everyone wants to get on the Mirage. There are 2 spots open on one of their 2 day trips in Jun 2nd 2014. I recommend that. I would also call and see if you can get on standby if that date doesnt work. As for the Pacific Islander, I have ridden it before. It is a larger more comfortable boat. They do alright. I'll take the uncomfortable Mirage any day.
The Mirage is adopting a new policy. If you have been on they’re boat once already you can’t go on it again for two years. From the last time. Even if you are booked already you will be receiving a notice that you ha e been taken off it’s schedule until two years from the last trip you were on
Very nice !!
Ok thanks for the response
Awesome video. I need to get on one of these halibut trips. When is a good time to go?
Jose Sanchez July is usually a good month.
Mr. Rob's..What month start fishing for halibot..where is this in california..would you mind to inform us,how much it coast for charter..thank u..
Its out of Oxnard California. Best time is June - August. Look them up at miragesportfishing dot com
great vid, was wondering what reel you would recommend to put on a 8' seeker mgc series jig stick? i want to make a setup for wsb, halibut, yellowtail
i was looking into the avet reels, but if you could recommend any other that would be awesome. want to stay generally affordable, less than $200
***** First off, what is your rod rated for? Is it the 15-25 or 25-40? If its the 15-25, I would recommend AVET SX which can be had for 149$ brand new. If its the 25-40 I'd probably recommend the MXL which is 165$ brand new. You can always look for used gear, which you can probably get at a much cheaper price. There are other brands that might be cheaper, but Im not familiar with the model #'s too look at. There's newell (great for casting on 8ft rod) and theres also Penn reels. If its for WSB, Halibut & Yellowtail, I would definitely go mid size reel like the avet MXL. You can go real cheap and get a Penn Jigmaster for around 60$. The Penn squall also looks like a decent price. Visit your local tackle store and let them know how much you want to spend. They'll know how to best serve you.
Thanks for your help, I actually just ordered the avet mxj single speed and my rod is rated for 15-25. Hope that works out well, and in knowing that, what line would you put on that setup for wsb, halibut, and yellowtail. Last question, I promise! Thanks.
***** First thing I would do is put on 45-60lb spectra to the brim and have like maybe 10-20 yards of mono on top. One thing about your setup, your rod isn't very strong. Your gonna have a hard time on big yellows and big WSB or even tuna. You're gonna need the extra line capacity spectra will give you. Thanks for all the questions. I will probably make a video out of it because im sick of answering the same questions.
That man flipped the bail when the halibut was going to eat the turd lol
how long were you fishing
Omg i just went on their website to book with them on july this year and the entire month is booked out. Is there anyways i could still book with them on july month? I wanna target halibut and seabass and this seems to be best boat.
Either get on the waiting list, or pick a weekday overnight trip. Ventura sportfishing also has the Pacific Dawn (another great boat that i video on) that will do 2 day trips also this year.
Hey Claire looks like some spots are available on a 2 day on the mirage in august via sportfishingreport.com site booking.sportfishingreport.com/sales/
backside of Rosa?
The first Halibut I saw was in BC and it was 60lbs but they told me that in northern BC they could get some that were 250lbs but they didn't bring them onboard they would string them to the hull of the boat and shoot them in the head. It apparently became the way to do it after a boat brought a big one on board and when it thrashed it broke a guys neck killing him instantly.
El Diablo ya halibut get way bigger than this, bigger than humans, I’m on van island, and I’m sure there’s some down there too big to land
Hi Rob - it seems that you guys have a group that go all the times? Looks like lotsa fun there. Are you guys in a fishing club or something?
Hey Vic, we usually go in groups of 3-4 depending on the trip. Sometimes the boat is chartered, most of the times it isn't. I do go with friends and family, but usually its never the same people. Me and my bro fish alot, and if others want to tag along, they do. We usually have trips picked out 3-9 months in advance, and we let our fishing friends/family know. Thats how we do it. Thanks for watching and may your nouc mam be delicous~
Hahah. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.
When is your next Mirage 2 days trip? They had some spots for Jun and Aug and I booked the Aug. 08/04/14. It will be cool if you guys are on it. :-)
Unfortunately we're not on the August trip. We're on the early July and Late July one.
Oh ok. Thanks.
you guys are knocking them out of the park. When you said waiting list, exactly how many people can fish on the boat?
On an overnight, usually they fish anywhere between 20-24 people. On a 2 day trip they usually fish 16-18 people. Book early...The schedule usually comes out in January and fills up fast.
Rob's Fishing Channel Hey Rob im new to fishing and seem to always pick the worst days to go. Any suggestions on how to select a day that would more likely productive? It gets old fast when you pay a lot of money for these trips and the one day i choose to go, the wsb and halibut are no where to be seen. Thanks!
Peter Tran Pick a day in june/july/aug. Preferably mid week. Even better is a 2 day mid week. Keep the other boats in mind too. Pacific Dawn and other channel island boats.
min 14:39 its a shimano talica but need to ensure if the rod its a seeker or fenwick maybe a calstar?
+bluemarlin380 Its definitely a seeker rod, but I dont know the model. Its not my rod so I cant say for sure.
+Rob's Fishing Channel i think its a super seeker live bait rod my friend and awesome vid did u have more of white sea bass and flounder?
one of the best gaffers around........................
WHAT KIND OF LURE THAT THEY ARE USING?
Benny..... Le,
When they're around its mostly live squid. Live squid is like candy to these fish.
are the rent rods they have at ciscos capable of bring up fish these big?
Probably, but im not sure I would trust it. I know ventura sportfishing has great rental gear. Check them out and the Pacific Dawn..
Rob's Fishing Channel do you use rental gear? or do you have your own stuff, and if so would it be too much trouble to ask what you use c:
Erigma Hey Erigma, I dont use rental gear.. The gear I used on this trip i'll list out. I took 4 setups with me.. Starting with the reels, smallest to biggest. Shimano TE300, Avet Sx, Avet SX Raptor, Avet MX Raptor. The Rods in the same order with the reels are as follows, Teramar 15/30lb, Calstar 700L(15-25lb), Calstar 700M(25-50lb), Calstar 700MH(25-60lb). I caught most of my stuff on the 700M & Avet SX Raptor.
Rob's Fishing Channel hey thanks for everything, im preatty new to fishing and im only 16 years old, i have probably only gone fishing in the sea like this 5 or 6 times, and every time i go i stay up all night whatching your videos haha
When will you make more videos on the mirage?
I havent fished the mirage this year.. maybe next year
Oh k lol and I still fish the Mirage. going this Wednesday and fishing Thursday and next year I'll being two 2 days on it we killed the yellows last year on the 2 day
I so want to go fishing now!!!!!!!!!!!
Get out there! fishing is hot right now! Good luck
I emailed Mirage Sportfishing after i watched your vid and asked when the best time to go Halibut fishing would be. I'm ready now after watching those hookups...lol
Rob's Fishing Channel
Definitely epic trip. Any fish left? :)
That’s some good fishing
As an avid angler, and one that would like to see the oceans survive for longer than only a few more generations, I would have liked to have seen some catch-and-release. Beautiful fish, and a great haul, but how can we expect it to survive if we keep everything, and give nothing back???
1976TPF You'd be surprised what California has done. Trawling is the biggest problem. Why do you think we caught so many fish? Trawling in that area is was banned a couple of years ago
You have no clue sportfishing does not hurt the fishery its commercial fishing and factory ships that destroy fisheries.....
Taylor Posey why do you think sportfishing has quotas and limits? if you think that sportfishing has no impact on stocks at all, it is you who have no clue. Proper management is essential, but I do agree that the commercial fishing fleets need to be reigned in and have much lower quotas. And trawlers need to be banned. They rape the ocean indiscriminitely.
we're doomed...
They can’t drag nets any more but it won’t be enough Don’t worry the MLPA will Put it on they’re agenda to f...... it up for everybody
do you think top smelt will work for halibut
Beast Squid is usually the best.
Smelt are an AWESOME baitfish for halibut, and everything else swimming around. You can have them in a bucket without a pump, change the water every half hour, and they still go ballistic on a hook. You can't say the same for chovies, dines, or squid because all three need constant fresh water via a pump to stay alive. Growing up broke and fishing from jetties or piers taught me that smelt were FREE to catch (dough bait), more hardy (no pump needed, can make multiple casts with same bait), and most importantly, CONSISTENTLY CATCH FISH. End rant.
Name of first fish they caught?????
White seabass and California Halibut
Epic....!
Thanks Leo the Second.. EPIC is an understatement.
I can only dream of a day like that.
Dude nice trip, I would have to rename this fishing trip titled
(THE GONG SHOW).
Those are some tough California fish , your gonna need a bigger bat.
Must have been on the spawning grounds. Ca halibut take decades to reach that size. Its a good thing we have limits on commercial and rec take, need to maintain this fishery.
Yes they tag the fish with strong waterproof paper with your number on the sign in sheet. At the end of the day, you know which fish is yours
What was used as bait?
+Alexx Ramirez Live Squid
+Rob's Fishing Channel How much is the live squid in the US? We Hong Kong cost USD1 each sometimes cost USD3 when the live bait in short.
hell yeah man got em good that trip now you got to clean them but there worth it cause there very good cheers from florida
Cheers from SO CAL!

DAMMN!!, those are huge compared to ours
What sizes do you catch? Where do you fish? Let us know.
Thanks
Rob's Fishing Channel Oh my mistake, I thought that Halibut were giant flounders until i googled it thanks
Where do you fish!!! Im in cali tooo
We fish everywhere from Oxnard down to San Diego.
You think you can give me some spots to fish at? Nd how to catch halibut
Jonathan Peraza you can catch halibut @ www.channelislandssportfishing.com in summer time! I always fish on boats! Good luck!
SWEET! TACO TACO !!!!
Jesus those are small halibut. Deck loaded with chickens!
These "chickens" averaged 35lbs plus. Largest going 52lbs.. Hardly "chickens" in california.
who supplyes the rods?
Deuce Duffield we supply the rods and reels...u can rent though if needed!
when you mean we do you mean the people or you
Deuce Duffield everyone supplies their own equipment...unless you want to rent from the landing... what I meant to say is, i supply myself and my friends..not everyone.... everyone is responsible for themselves...
= D
cool i whanna do this trip REALLY bad
people no idea what there talking about! California Halibut is an abundant resource now that hook and line fishing is the norm. this score is a drop in the bucket!
white sea bass?
+Jeremiah Giles YEP
did you really dome that deckhand with your lead lol, freespool as soon as its gaffed next time
He's the captain...
bueno muy bueno
salistre1770 Chif yo se...me gusta tambien~!
boa e bonita pescaria ; e meu sonho
Thanks!
Catch, fillet, feed self and family.
White seabass?
Yes.. and halibut!
NEVER BEEN FISHING OUT IN THE OCEAN, HOW MUCH DOES A TRIP LIKE THAT COST?
mundo bb this is a two day trip and costs around $500
mundo bb 50-80 a person for 1 day
Thanks 4 the info guys, ill keep waching.
+shoopwhoopX Maybe for a 3/4 day. Full day trips are closer to 100$. All depends on where you go and how many people you fish with. The more people, the cheaper it is. Its also much more annoying fishing with 70 people than say 20.
+Rob's Fishing Channel So basically the rates are split among the numbers of ppl going?
One hell of a So Cal halibut trip. That's a really nice grade of fish. Mirage is a really good operation. I really like how the halibut gaffing is done. The deckie is taking some care to not stick the fish in the loins. I like that; hate it when some careless gaffing ruins the fillets. Thanks for posting. Also, to the poster who thinks these are chickens, well, they would be if you are fishing Pacific halibut, but these are California butts, a different species.
Hey Corb, thanks for watching. You nailed it spot on. Mirage is a quality operation and they know how to gaff species perfectly. These were definitely not chickens, but more like BARN DOORS. TIGHT LINES!!!
too many halibuts where u are... here in uk.. rarely land one :-(
StickyIky fish in California Stickyky! its fishing...not catching... that trip was catching ...
The pile of fish usually gets consumed and eaten.
who wants to watch a 33 minute long video on youtube? I Cant even sit through a movie for that long!
Oops, meant boat
Manana vaatar sera do lacalle 609 e Cornwall st philadelphlapa 19134
Limits of California Halibut is 5 per person per day. We do catch, fillet and release. This is not why species die. Commercial fishing is why species die.The reason why the fish exist in such large numbers is because in the last few years they banned trawling and long lining in the Channel islands, thus there is a explosion of population of Halibut in Channel Islands. We would never catch this many halibut when trawling and long lining were in place. The population has increased tremendously
when the gill nets were banned, my hook and line halibut catch DOUBLED in size, and weight...
mirage is the best out here in cali !
No way a resource can stand that kind of pressure and make it
+desert1cop Thankfully this catch was after commercial fishing was banned in the area we caught them. Just goes to show you, who's really depleting our natural resources... Its not the sport fisherman...
+desert1cop and you know this how?...you didn't see the day after day when they hardly caught anything....go police the desert you know so much about
...not for you to judge, believe me, there's plenty of good management and regulation...
at first i thoutgh the hailbut is flounder i said holy sh*t thats a big flounder
Emmett Patarini California Halibut! For California, its pretty large..its a separate species than a pacific halibut (which starts from SF to AK.
really fam...
BIG SOIA
better than winning a poker hand
Why u took so maaaany!!!???
many mouths to feed...
What difference did they make for commercial fishing? They did not need so many fish, there were not only you there, there were other boats doing the same, a pity to see that.
Looks like a bunch of undersize Seabass, Do you wonder why you catch no fish on most of your trips?
And u wonder why there no more fish. Especially! Halibut!! To catch! !! was it worth it? Need to catch and release.
And you know there is no fish because? There is plenty as you can see from the video. Lol.
Do you kill the calico bass to ?
Christina Aguirre Calico bass we rarely ever keep. I never keep them, but other fisherman do. 95% we usually release them.
plenty of fish in the sea...that bite you keep getting...and miss...that's halibut...
yes, very good eating...
#Nice
mohamed emad Thanks!
Some of those white sea bass were under sized and you guys should know the legal length for those is 28 inches period, no if's and's or but's. Yes I know what the hell I'm talking about.
U must be dumb. Captains wouldnt allow for short fish.
dumb ass
What he's saying is hat you should be more careful, in case if the fish was undersize, yaw just gulfed the crap out of it.
Plus, not all captains be following the regulations, they'd do anything for money cause that's the only job they got.
+Nike Zeuzs king of god DAMD few, 99.99.99% have to be legal.
super bbbb
Isn't their a 3 fish limit on those ? Why have I seen the same person catch like 6. This is why the species dies. I thought you guys where about catch and release bro.
Where are the waves,,,South CA Seas are too dam nice to fish, better than up Northern CA and warmer too. How come I didn't know about this 20 years ago...
Bruce Truong Come down to So-Cal!
Ping!
Why would you fish such small gear.......
Because its more than capable of catching those fish. Look it up! Avet SX RAPTOR!
like
