If you check, Rick Danko was a driving force behind The Band. I use to sit at his parent's house and listen to these guys long before they ever made a recording. His brother Terry Danko is also an amazing and played with George Harrison at times.
I love The Band. Love RIck Danko, his singing has so much soul and feeling. However, the all contributed and Robbie kind of became the leader as 3 members got into heroin, Richard, Levon and Rick. I'm not taking anything away from the other members and I'm not being judgemental, but the fact is drugs took it's toll.
This band was and still is considered one of the best bands ever. I'm proud to have grown up wit Rick Danko. He's the Bass Player. From a small town in Ontario Canada.

That's when they were off stage Levon ALWAYS had a smoke in hand. Then again it may "helped" his voice. A sports broadcaster was once asked how he (the broadcaster) kept such a rich raspy voice for so long, and he said his advice was to "keep smoking!" Robbie seemed to "match" him smoke per smoke.

@dpattenden , there's a bloated 4 CD set you can buy on Amazon, which is actually worth it if youre a big time fan. It has an amazing Baby Dont Do It plus King Harvest and Acadian Driftwood. The 2 CD is suffice, though.
When Levon Helm explains how music flowed from multiple sources and influences, they ask him what that music is called and he says “Rock and Roll”. That’s good. When Robbie gets melodramatic about how The Road has taken a lot of people, it’s as full of tragic self-pitying bullshit as Hotel California.
Huh?! The road did take a lot of good musicians ...Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Ricky Nelson, Patsy Cline, need I add more?
It is not self pity bullshit. Not everyone is cut out for that lifestyle. The were together for 16 years, and were on the road a lot. A this stage, Robbie was married with 3 young children, Rick. Levon, and Richard were heavy into heroin and other drugs, Robbie felt if the kept going something bad would happen. Rick had already had a near fatal car accident, Richard had crashed a few cars. Richard I think was the most addicted and couldn't always be counted on. Also it is not unusually for muscians and other artists to want to explore something new.

The all contributed. I love Rick's singing, Garth's playing, as well as Richards and Levon's singing. Robbie wrote some incredible lyris. They were all awsome.
