The band has 3 lead singers. Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie (who also plays keyboards) and Lindsey Buckingham (who also plays guitar). Lindsey is doing the lead on this with Stevie and Christine joining in on the chorus. All three also write the songs that they sing.
Kind of funny that they thought maybe it was Stevie singing lead here. Yes, in preparation for recording the track she grew a beard and a big fuzzy fro. 🦍
Mick Fleetwood is killing it on the drums here. His beat and fills take this from a folksy pop song to a "galloping anthem". I've always thought this was one of their very best tracks.
@@Ezekiel33USA Interesting that Mick's dyslexia added to that. Lindsey knew the exact marching drum pattern he wanted but Mick couldn't quite get it down due his dyslexia so it has a slight off rhythm pattern which is fantastic.

Rumors was perfection, every song on the album made it to radio airplay and it's always a treat when it comes on the radio. One day you'll have heard enough classic rock that listening to your local classic rock station won't be a spoiler.
One of the biggest selling albums of the rock era. This and Hotel California by the Eagles pretty much dominated 1977 on the radio (Aja too). Every song great and most were hits. IT IS A GUY SINGING LEAD!! Lindsay Buckingham is the lead vocalist on this and he's the band's lead guitarist>>A GREAT LEAD GUITARIST. He tended to write the hardest rocking songs. The 2 gals, his then girlfriend Stevie Nicks, and Christine McVie, the keyboardist (wife of bass player John McVie) were also lead and backup singers, generally did the softer tunes. The oddity of this album is the 2 couples (Buckingham/Nicks and the McVies) BOTH WERE SPLITTING UP WHILE RECORDING RUMOURS!! So almost all the songs are ABOUT THEIR LOVE LIFE SPLITTING UP!! The easiest way to tell the difference in the voices of the 3 is this (other than reading the album credits): Lindsay has a somewhat high male voice, but he sings rockers and tends to shout the uptempo songs with kind of an urgency. Stevie has a smoky seductive type voice, she does have a low register for a female, but "smoky" is the best term and her songs are witchy, gypsy like, a bit mysterious. Christine McVie is also blonde (further confusing things), she's British (Buckingham/Nicks are Americans, McVies and Drummer Mick Fleetwood are British). Her songs are usually the softest and poppiest of the 3 singers. All 3 were great songwriters and lead vocalists but Lindsay Buckingham brought the energy to the band, he's intense and an incredible guitarist. I saw FM once, but saw Buckingham solo twice in small venues just to watch his guitar playing. I guess it doesn't help matters that Lindsey is usually a girl's name and Stevie is usually a guy's name. 🤔 😂 PS Fleetwood Mac btw, was formed by drummer Mick Fleetwood and bass player John MCVie, ie Mac.

Fleetwood Mac is not known for their guitar solos, but Lindsey Buckingham's solo on this is one of his most notable, especially when he plays live. Lindsey's guitar playing is unique and sadly underrated when people talk about the band. When the Bass, Drums and Lindsey's playing starts rolling; it's a fantastic flowing feeling. Great choice, and excellent commentary, as always. Thanks, guys.
Not the Rumours era since Lindsey played, arranged and produced to the song. He lets loose in concert. But FM started off as a guitar band - at times having 3 guitarists in addition to the bass.
Actually, they were when they first started. Peter Green was a phenomenal guitarist, he wrote black magic woman. He left band in 1970, suffered from schizophrenia.
The "heavier" female voice, as you described it, is the other female lead singer Christine Mcvie. She has kind of a low smoky tone. Yall said you might have heard Go Your Own Way in a commercial. React to "Everywhere" by Fleetwood Mac. Christine sings lead on that one. Lindsey and Stevie do some great harmonies with her. You will definitely recognize it. It's just that her songs like Dreams and Silver Springs make it look like he did or he was the cheater (that was her too she admitted years later). She later said that her opening lines To Dreams were written from Lindsey's POV not hers. She wanted her freedom. SS was written after she left him and got with Henley. Christine said even though Steve axed it when Lindsey got tired of feeling bad and got himself some girlfriends then Stevie couldn't handle it.

His first solo on this is superb. He plays a phrase. He plays a different phrase. He repeats the first phrase, double tracked. Then, the payoff. That payoff is one of the best ever recorded by any guitarist.
One of the greatest American bands. Period. Their use of tight harmonies on the chorus is a signature sound that's similar to a few great bands before them: CSN&Y and Chicago. A true banger!
OMG...yes!! Adds such a BOUNCE to the whole tune. John McVie is SOLID throughout Fleetwood Mac's discography, but barely gets a mention---except for 'The Chain'.
Lindsey is singing lead, and the song is a direct message to Stevie who is singing backup. She hated the line "shacking up's all you wanna do" and would intentionally screw it up when they played this live.
That's what makes Fleetwood Mac so amazing - so many vocal sounds from this group because they all contribute. Try You Make Loving Fun next, that's got Christine on lead vocals and an amazing bassline. Also I don't think you've listened to Dire Straits yet but I think you'd like some Mark Knopfler examples of amazing guitar solos.
Ya I was kinda wondering what you were referring too…Lindsey Buckingham sings this song Stevie and him have history(the whole band does 😊)-makes for great tunes!❤ They all harmonize so well!😅
Now there is Lot of history around this song, but to my knowledge, it's the only song that was written about a break-up and sung by both participants in that very break-up, while being in the same band... Lyndsey Buckingham wrote it about his break-up with Stevie Nicks... Stevie Nicks and Christie McVie are the backup singers on this track... Fleetwood Mac always had their own distinctive sound...
Geez you Gents just won’t stop… not that we want you to but almost every song takes me back to when cruising in the country we could pull over anywhere and if the sheriff went by he just waved. So Miss those days but Thank You so much for reminding us of those days. 🫠🤤🫣😂🤠
Look at the Album cover on the video. It shows the album art and the Song names that were on that particular 45 rpm single when it was released. "Go Your own Way" is the B SIDE of "The Chain". THE B-SIDE!!!! They had a huge hit with A B-SIDE!!!!
They wrote songs about how much they hated each other and then made the others sing backup vocals. “Packing up, shacking ups all you want to do” is some cold blooded stuff to sing about your ex-girlfriend standing 3 feet away from you, waiting to come in on the chorus. 😂
You can just imagine the tension of such a break up song being sung by the two people breaking up night after night. Stevie didn't really agree with Lindsays' take on the situation.
You should do a live version of a couple of their songs. 3 singers and my favorite who just passed away was Christine McVie. They were one of the best bands in the world around this time and this album has nothing but hit songs.
Check out a live version of Lindsey performing Big Love. Before I saw him play it live, I thought there were at least 2 guitars, but it was just him. Dude is definitely an underrated guitarist like others are commenting.
The LIVE VERSION. (97) IT'S THE FINALE. FLEETWOOD'S DRUMMING, LINDSEY'S GUITAR, STEVIE'S WHATEVER.... ROCKS SO SO HARD. AND YES....SHOUTING ABOUT IT IS APPROPRIATE.
You guys are really playing some great classics and bangers, keep it up. Love the A's and Dodgers baseball caps your wearing, one team in last place (A's) and the other in first place LA).
Suggest you guys watch the documentary “Sound City”. It will give you a lot of insight on Fleetwood Mac and other great bands in the 70’s and beyond who recorded at the legendary Sound City Studios in LA.
One of those records that you can play from beginning to end..Rumours was the apex of their career, 1977 was a good year….I had just been discharged from the USAF, enrolled in Cal Poly to study engineering….
Another arrest day for Orange Dingleberry today... Pretty sure he wishes he could run to Moscow to join with David Geovanis LoL! But this is such a great break up song. Given today's events, Trapeze 'Jury' more appropriate. ua-cam.com/video/nTlQU2Vel7o/v-deo.htmlsi=_hPXAaUQocUupz28 (same singer who sings Coast To Coast, Trapeze, which is almost a jazz ballad; wide range pipes).
The intro vocal is heavier than Stevie Nicks, because that’s Lindsay Buckingham singing that part. Stevie Nicks and Christie McVie sing the backing part.
You are correct. Lindsay is amazing. I overlook him often. Guilty. As a combo lead guitarist and singer? He may be the best. Alex Lifeson and Jimmy Page fine on harmony and back up singing. Not much else! Another is Rik Emmett. He's right up there as well. Probably give edge to Buckingham. On raw guitar skills, both are definitely underrated.
The old question you can only take one record to be on a deserted island with you...this is that album for me. Every song is a classic and the repeatedability of playing them is off the charts. The fact that they were all in relationships with each other and breaking up and cheating and the songs on this album are about all of it and basically talking to each other about it thru these songs is phenomenal. Flat out one of the best albums ever made

This album was always playing in our college dorm. Such great memories!
These songs are so Personal…y’all must watch live.
The bass line in the chorus is genius. Weaving in and around the vocal line. John MacVie.
OMG...yes!! Adds such a BOUNCE to the whole tune. John McVie is SOLID throughout Fleetwood Mac's discography, but barely gets a mention---except for 'The Chain'.
My favorite Fleetwood Mac song.
One of my top 5 of all time
Lindsey is singing lead, and the song is a direct message to Stevie who is singing backup. She hated the line "shacking up's all you wanna do" and would intentionally screw it up when they played this live.
Lindsay Buckingham was by far my favourite member of Fleetwood Mac. Love his song writing and voice. ❤️
I just replied on another comment about Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits as being one of the few 'finger-pickers" playing lead.
I always thought of this song as Lindsey's reply to Stevie's "Silver Springs".
Ya I was kinda wondering what you were referring too…Lindsey Buckingham sings this song Stevie and him have history(the whole band does 😊)-makes for great tunes!❤
They all harmonize so well!😅
Killer bass line !
It has a folk sound to it, I like it!
Lindsey singing, and lead guitar, Stevie singing backups
Now there is Lot of history around this song, but to my knowledge, it's the only song that was written about a break-up and sung by both participants in that very break-up, while being in the same band... Lyndsey Buckingham wrote it about his break-up with Stevie Nicks... Stevie Nicks and Christie McVie are the backup singers on this track... Fleetwood Mac always had their own distinctive sound...
That relationship drama fed that energy!
May have to include Richard and Linda Thompson in that group lol
A gentleman is singing this one win big
Geez you Gents just won’t stop… not that we want you to but almost every song takes me back to when cruising in the country we could pull over anywhere and if the sheriff went by he just waved. So Miss those days but Thank You so much for reminding us of those days. 🫠🤤🫣😂🤠
Lindsay Buckingham on vocals, wrote this about his breakup with Stevie.
Don't forget the Bass and those Drums!
John McVie's bass is sick!!
Look at the Album cover on the video. It shows the album art and the Song names that were on that particular 45 rpm single when it was released. "Go Your own Way" is the B SIDE of "The Chain". THE B-SIDE!!!! They had a huge hit with A B-SIDE!!!!
Lindsey Buckingham is singing, fabulous!!
They wrote songs about how much they hated each other and then made the others sing backup vocals. “Packing up, shacking ups all you want to do” is some cold blooded stuff to sing about your ex-girlfriend standing 3 feet away from you, waiting to come in on the chorus. 😂
This album was a monster! One of the biggest sellers of all time. Every song is excellent!
Lindsey is tearing that guitar up wit his finger picking style
Yes he is a finger picker
Not many lead "finger pickers", the only other one I can think of is Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
@@TheRagratus toy Caldwell of Marshall Tucker Band also
You can just imagine the tension of such a break up song being sung by the two people breaking up night after night. Stevie didn't really agree with Lindsays' take on the situation.
Lindsey Buckingham singing Lead, and playing Lead 🎸 GUITAR
Stevie Nicks is singing Back up. I Love the LEAD GUITAR AND THE BASS.
You should do a live version of a couple of their songs. 3 singers and my favorite who just passed away was Christine McVie. They were one of the best bands in the world around this time and this album has nothing but hit songs.
I bought this LP when it came out. Still a big favorite.
My aunt Opal gave it to me as a Christmas present, 1977 (i was 8). Yeah, I had a very cool hippie aunt...
Check out a live version of Lindsey performing Big Love. Before I saw him play it live, I thought there were at least 2 guitars, but it was just him. Dude is definitely an underrated guitarist like others are commenting.
Such a fantastic song from a fantastic album. I hope you are working your way through the whole thing!
Can't you guys hit PAUSE and look at Wikipedia for a second then hit resume record. Give Lindsey some credit. This is his song.
The most profitable break up known to human kind. The outro.
The LIVE VERSION. (97)
IT'S THE FINALE. FLEETWOOD'S DRUMMING, LINDSEY'S GUITAR, STEVIE'S WHATEVER....
ROCKS SO SO HARD.
AND YES....SHOUTING ABOUT IT IS APPROPRIATE.
Lindsey was singing this. Stevie and Christine were on the chorus.
You guys are so cute when you go sideways, you know kinda real. 😅
🙏🍁
Great Lindsey solo in the outro....
I can’t believe you thought that was Stevie with a deep voice! 😆 Keep on keepin’ on fellas.
Interesting what you were saying about the drums thank you
That’s Lindsey Buckingham he’s the lead guitarist and a great singer.Stevie and Christine in the background .best band in the 70’s
One of those records that you can play from beginning to end..Rumours was the apex of their career, 1977 was a good year….I had just been discharged from the USAF, enrolled in Cal Poly to study engineering….
Great song from a great band. Great reaction fellas. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Another arrest day for Orange Dingleberry today...
Lidsey Buckingham sings this one. Writes a bunch. Look him up. Low key mad talented.
The intro vocal is heavier than Stevie Nicks, because that’s Lindsay Buckingham singing that part. Stevie Nicks and Christie McVie sing the backing part.
Suggestion: Check out the live concert " the dance" ... Lindsey Buckingham . Big Love or I'm so afraid. Top 10 guitarists all-time in my book !
I feel Lindsey is very underrated as a guitar player.
@@Greg-io1ip I agree ..
