  • Working on this one for a good friend of mine so we can get this ready to go for spring time for his kids. Diagnosing the smoking issues and low compression which turned out to be a lot lower than what I expected. Not even sure how this thing was running after what I found.

    Cool little bike. I bought my 9 year old daughter a crf70 today for her big Xmas present. Can’t wait for spring I’ll have a riding buddy.

      I just got done getting a mint CRF50 running and cleaned up for my friend that will be giving it to his nephew for Christmas. It will be under the tree for the kid on Christmas morning. I love that I had a small hand in that for him. Something he will never forget.

    Good to see inside the wee engine years ago my mate had the Honda ss 50 smaller bore but looks similar engine. Was more or less typical Honda bulletproof .same time I had the xl 250 , in Britain you on!y could have the 50cc moped at 16yrs of age and a 250cc at 17yrs of age so there where plenty of 50cc moped going around . Good job stripping it .👍

      It’s amazing how the design of that engine has been pretty much the same since the 60s. Proven design with pretty much every single flaw worked out over the past 50+ years!

    Wonder if he was putting 2 stroke gas in it ? Also I thought the gap was .03 for the valves ?

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  2 роки тому +2

      it turned out being the worn rings. I was just going by what’s in the Honda service manual for valve gap. With the new top end it doesn’t smoke at all now.

    Good video. My 2 cents, measure the bore in at least 2 places. Upper and lower and if it's in spec I'd hone it then measure it again to make sure you didn't take to much off. Your this far pop the valves out and wire wheel them, lap them and if they have guide seals change them. New piston and rings, not sure what brand that old piston is. Cam chain and guide and it will be good for years to come. Fresh oil of the correct weight, again don't know what's in it. Keep it up , it's a kids bike not a racer. It will be fine.

      Thank you! I appreciate the pointers. That’s pretty much going to be the plan. Just didn’t have my calipers at the time of filming to get the measurements.

      @@Garage2Trailthe carbon on the piston was probably helping that cause! Lol
      It was good to see that the rings were installed wrong. I bet it would have kept on going with just new rings, but id also have gone the 88cc jug at that point. Not like it's a trailer queen, museum piece. I ride three wheelers, (got an '85 250R, and an '84 200S. I also had an '85 350X but i had to pay the rent 😢 ) and those 3 wheeler guys are off the hook about OEM everything lol
      My point is, or was, Hondas are awesome.
