I know you mentioned you weren't sure people would be interested in this, but I for one REALLY appreciate you putting this together. I've always wanted a good beginner's explanation of a full 350 teardown. You've done vids like this before, but I always want to learn more.

find a copy of "how to rebuild your small block chevy". it was the "for dummies" book back in our day.

As a Mechanic, I can tell You now that You are very good at rebuilding Engines. I have rebuilt Engines for most of My career and can say that not one piece of Your advice is wrong. You even reminded Me of a couple of things I forgot to mention in My last rebuild. I would recommend You for anyone & Thank You for posting such a good video. No kidding, was that timing chain shot! I have had worse though & also with the lifters & cam.

@@ViceGripGarage Definitely more of these videos! Maybe VGGRebuilds channel if it doesn't fit the motif of the main channel? Seriously, before UA-cam you had to watch what a director and editor crafted, skipping half the most important details and nuance of tearing something apart...and the fun of it, like opening a dirty present. This video is so straightforward and interesting. I would ask for more closeups, like when you first started working on those lifters -- I really wanted to see what you were doing. Obviously it's just you, but it makes for compelling content. Is it possible to find a new block and re-use these parts? That would tie episodes together with a theme and keep us couch mechanics coming back for more...

Derek, you are an exceptional mechanic. I drive a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 4.8 liter with 494,000 miles and engine has NEVER been opened up. Proper maintenance is a very important detail for me. Thank you for this video, you sir are the best.

Dirt cheap engine build would be one hell of a video. This here was one hell of a teardown, and I appreciate the time and effort. I'm a fan of the engine teardowns on how and why an engine may have gone bad, and if it's worth saving or not.
Because that wasn't a full rebuild.

@@VauxhallViva1975Perhaps, but for the slightly additional cost you could find another used block with no cracks or otherwise big damage and recondition from there. If you are trying to get a small block Chevy, these should v be a dime a dozen ... but if I wanted a dependable engine to build upon why not an LQ4? Lots available, 400 or 500 hP engines easily done.

Thanks for your video you are spot on,I worked in a junk yard when I was 13 years old after school and the owner taught me how to overhaul engines. You explained the process so well I still learned something new every I watch your video. I am 75 and still a gear head.

Yes, budget build. Maybe more than one. The basics are the same but every flavor (Bow Tie, Blue Oval, Pentastar) has its own unique characteristics. Could be a great reference for a lot of guys' projects.

One reason everyone likes this video is how well edited it is - we know it took way more than an hour to find those cracks, but it didn't feel like you left anything out! Excellent, excellent work cutting it down to a manageable size while showing every important detail. And yes, we want to see one going back together!

You have master mechanics and then you have gifted mechanics like Derek. All the books in the world and most wouldn’t be able to retain this amount of knowledge and regurgitate it on demand like this guy. This is the kind of guy you drop any car off to and have no doubts if it can be fixed he’ll fix it.
Scrap the block & press on with the rebuild (please)!
Great. Best rebuild lesson I've seen. I'm a hatched and saw back yard guy with engine hung from oak tree. I've done some rebuilds and was never sure what and why to replace. Thank you.
Excellent content. I took the heads off a town and country 6 cyl, front and back, and took it to the machine shop, and replaced the gasket and torqued it all back down and reassembled and it ran very well for a long time. I have never seen this engine torn down so I love watching this stuff. Keep up the good work.

It was all due to lack of communication. A engineer changed something and the operator didn't tell the next operator to be able to tell me. I had to figure it out by trying everything that maintenance didn't lol

This episode was amazing Derek. It really sucks about the block, but on the positive this was one of the most informative engine tear down / build videos I've ever seen, especially on youtube as a whole. You really went down into each possible issue, explained how or why it happened, explained how to fix each one and how to get away with it on a budget as well. This whole video was a win otherwise. If someone asked me about engines and analyzing them, this is the video I would show them. I would absolutely love to see a rebuild video, in this style especially. Thank you again Derek!

I would really like to see a full in depth budget build of a SBC with just a few power upgrades, slightly lumpy cam, cheapo aluminum heads, long tube headers, etc. Maybe even a TBI build because you don't see a lot of those. But just a guide for something your average DIY Joe can throw together over a weekend and slam into the work truck. Either way, great video as always!
I’d love to see a “ so a guy bought a tbi truck and you wanna carb swap it” and see a build on that with heads and cam.

Well his automotive smarts kinda sorta came from books but not your typical books he has said in a interview that he grew up reading those old books about how things worked(cant recall what they were called)/repair manuals & similar type of books but he also learned alot from just jumping into a project an learning about said project as he went along working on it..
An excellent overview and discussion on doing a tear down. You really break it down and explain everything so well. Great information for a beginner, or even a seasoned engine fixer.

Everytime you do one of these deep dive teardowns and inspections I learn something new. I never had anyone to teach me about engines so these videos tell me a whole lot of information. I know that you have talked about these very things in other videos but actually seeing one that shows exactly what you're talking about is much better. Thank you for taking the time to do this. It brings me one step closer to having the confidence to do more things myself.
YES to seeing a budget small block build. Preferably SBF, but doesn’t really matter. I’m interested in seeing a dingleberry hone and what parts should probably always be replaced and which ones can usually be kept. Also some tricks like converting to a roller cam might be cheap neat and practical.
Converting to a roller cam is only affordable if you find a complete long block with factory roller cam that is affordable. I wish it was different.
Do another small block budget build!! I've learned so much watching your videos. So educational and entertaining!
Derek really goes into depth with what to look for on the engine teardown and if what you see as an issue is worth keeping or spending more money on. Good video with good insight on engine overhauls.
Honestly one of your best videos. The information/knowledge you shared is on point. I've been a mechanic for the better part of my 53 years on this planet and have "rebuilt" many different engines. A large number of them being sbc's. A bunch built with a ball hone, rings, bearings, and a gasket set along with new cam/lifters and oil pump with great success. Simple works just fine a lot of the time. Thanks for another great video.
When you quote rebuilt on this channel my first thought was you spray painted it and lost the receipts.

I decided that Derek knows his trade very well when I watched his BBC build video where he taught all the important stuff about valve train geometry. Even an old guy like me understood it the way he taught it. Knowledge and the talent to pass it along, He’s being modest as usual.
Yup. I know most of his videos are kind of entertaining roadkill-ish type, but this video and the BBC one you are referencing show that Derek really does know what he is doing.

Great episode. I’d love to see a very budget rebuild, maybe with follow ups on it in a vehicle to see how it’s holding up, compression, oil pressure, leaks, vacuum reading after 10k, 20k, and 30k miles. I’ve always wondered how well budget rebuilds work.

I actually love these more in depth videos. It’s something that often gets stepped over or we just get a quick “we’re installing new pistons” and you see 5 seconds and bam it’s all done.

This was awesome to watch! I am quite familiar with these engines so I understood what I was looking at. Now my girl is becoming more interested in cars and engines herself, and I had her watch this episode. She said that she learned so much while watching it, and now she can correctly identify many of the parts in an engine! She loves your show btw and would rather watch it than pretty much anything else on tv now! She said she will help me on my next engine rebuild!

Yeah, definitely do a build from scratch. Ideally, I'd love to see a big block with a couple of turbos on it, but that might be too high tech for some of the subscribers. Really any kind of a build is always fun!

Been a while since I rebuilt an engine but watching this video brought me back to grade 12 auto shop in 1980 when I rebuilt my first 327 Chevy engine . I remember our teacher describing the process in disassembly just as you did , great memories.
