  • hello! Today i tear down my sons xr70,and replace the cam chain roller. The bike was running really rough, and was very noisy. one of the previous owners had this top end apart.They did not put this bike back together right and as a result, the bike had some problems. Did this today it wasnt the cause of my noise but im glad i did it i got to know the bike better. Idk what i did wrong but now i have no throttle response im sure is something simple.

      Glad to hear you got to know the bike better! Not sure what is causing your throttle issue. I would check your carb just to make sure something didn't get in there when you had it off. Your noise is most likely the cam chain itself. They stretch over time. I just ordered a big bore kit and a hot cams timing chain for my sons bike and will post the video as soon as I put it on. I will give you my thoughts on the new cam chain. Hot cams claims it to be silent and to exceed OEM specifications.

    Damn dude. Thanks for the walk thru. Bout to do the same. 1997 xr70r. Going to rebuild the top end and get it going for to ride my little boy around on. Mine needs a few extra bits tho. The frame is snapped where the exhaust bolts on and two other supports need previous repairs re welded. But all my parts are in and I'm just trying to get an understanding of timing before I hit it. Hope to have it running by the end of this next week.

    Do you have a video that shows how to remove the valves? I need to replace my valve stem seals, but don’t know how to remove the valves to do this.

    • @larryc
      @larryc  3 роки тому +1

      No I don't currently have a video on that. My valve stem seals were good so I didn't replace them. However once you have the cylinder head off there is a cover on the side. That cover will allow you to remove the rocker arm assembly. I would keep them in the same order they came out. I have used a metal coat hanger to string them on in the past on other bikes. I would also label them intake and exhaust. After you have the rocker assembly out you can push the valve spring down and remove the valve spring retainer. You won't need a special tool or anything. After you have the valve out remember to lubricate the new seal with some oil. Hope that helps. I wish I had a video on it. I will try to make one in the future.

    The cam chain seems to go lose on the bottom while going through it’s strokes after you were done. Is that normal? Seems odd that the chain would just go lose like that. Mines doing that too and I have been fucking with the timing thinking I did something wrong… so is that normal?

    • @larryc
      @larryc  3 роки тому

      You are correct my cam chain was stretched. Here is a link to my video where I replace it ua-cam.com/video/63-CE5l6fjA/v-deo.html . It is not a dedicated cam chain video, I also put a big bore kit on it. However it shows the cam chain replacement,and should help.

      For that video here is a time stamp 37.21 is how tight it should be with the tensioner installed. Around 38.10 is with the tensioner out, and it is still tighter than my old cam chain was. After that you can see I do 2 full revolutions, and the cam chain isn't bouncing around. I went with a Hotcams cam chain for about 30$ and it was well worth it 👍
