- Tons of tips here! Please READ this video description....
Salt is your first line of defense against fish health problems as well as overall pond balance.
Here are some of the many benefits:
1. Used as an alternative to harsh chemicals that will kill your bacteria colony
2. Pond Salt is a great way to buffer inbalances in PH and Nitrite
3. Salt develops a thicker slime coat and calms your fish down
4. Salt for ponds can accurately measure you pond's water volume when used with a digital salt meter
5. Got string algae problems? Salting your pond will diminish the string algae quickly
6. Salt is very inexpensive. Water softener salt costs approximately $10.00 per bag at the time of this video here in Southern California
7. Improve gill function
8. Increase oxygen intake
9. Larger fish. Your Koi will do so well with a reading of .22 on your digital salt meter (or 22 Parts per Thousand) that they will eat more, grow stronger, and have a more robust immune system
10. Balances osmotic pressure in koi.
******* Tip *******
If you've read this so far, here's the formula for measuring water volume using a salt meter.
1. Measure the salinity level before adding salt.
2. Add your estimated pond volume times 1 pound of salt. If your pond is estimated to be 1000 gallons, add 1 pounds IF YOUR SALT READING IS NEAR ZERO ALREADY.
3. Measure the salt reading the next day.
Here's the formula.....
Salinity factor is 120 times the pounds of salt added
Salinity change divided by the salinity difference is the water volume.
****** Warning ******
Do not use salt if your pond has ammonia binders like zeolite or activated carbon. The use of salt will release the ammonia back into your pond and potentially kill your fish. The methods used in this video are to be used in ponds that are balanced without the use of minerals that bind ammonias.

Thanks Carl for answering my question which I was wondering about concerning the type of salt that I can use for my pond. Glad that I found your UA-cam channel. Thanks for all of your help in building my Koi pond. Your amazing work is still going strong in my pond. Will be in contact soon for some advice. Take care brother and God bless🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
I do salt my fish , same salt as you use. fish are in healthier shape as some new fish from store had skin issues. kids used to get me new baby koi each year. now my koi reproduce faster than i can handle. the salt is good for them. my pond is 4500 gallons. the salt helps my fish heal if they get a heron strike that damages a scale or two.
Thank you for affirming my video. It's a touchy subject and I was hesitant to produce. Thats why I backed up my topic with evidence from top experts.
Have a great day and please subscribe 🙏
We had a fish die yesterday that looked similar to the dead fish you showed! This video came at the exact right time for us!
will salt kill green algae in water, my fish seem healthy. I have pressure bio filter with uv light 2 waterfalls running 24-7 pond is 80% shade i can hardly see fish
I would try switching to a photosynthetic beneficial bacteria. Pressure filters gain heat in the sunlight and there are beds of anaerobic bacteria in the filter that can be a source of food for algae due to warm decomposing organic matter.
Triple the dose of the bacteria until your pond clears then run the system on a maintenance dose weekly.
Turn off the uv while the pond clears up. Backwash weekly 3 cycles.
Try microbe lift pl pro or aquascape lake bacteria professional blend.

Great info, have a couple of Kois laying on bottom of pond, going to try the salt first
What are your water parameters?
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens everything checks out fine now as I did a water change and used ProrForm C but still have a few fish staying at bottom of pond ,no more flashing or jumping
@roncal1 if you used proform c DO NOT ADD SALT!!! It clearly written on the label
Is your dosage 2.5 lb of salt to each 100 gallons of water?
Will solar salt harm my pond plant like water lily?
Hey Carl...great video. You guys cleaned my pond a few weeks ago. Quick question about the 0.22 digital meter reading. Is this OK for my Water Lillies?
Yes. Much higher than that, no. I'd try to keep it at .21 to .17
thanks Carl!@@ColumbiaWaterGardens

The winter this year in CT has not been too cold, but waterfall has been off since early December. This weekend I noticed one fish that seems to have porcupined...a 14 year old! In the 15 years I have had the pond, I have never had any issue with disease, can I save this fish? Can I add salt in the winter? Should I pull the fish out and try to treat just the fish for a few days? We have a deed freeze coming this weekend and then back into the 40's next week so I would have to do it today/tomorrow. I can send a picture if that helps.
Call my office and ask for me. 888-713-7771
What's your thoughts going into a winter freeze? This was a hard year for my fish coming out of winter as I lost 13 over the first two months
Sorry for your loss, Brad.
The ocean can still freeze, and that salt concentration is much stronger. If it were a concern I'd suggest a water change in the fall.
Using Salt In The Pond In Winter
Adding salt in the pond especially in the fall will help fish survive the long cold winter months. We recommend adding 1 - 2.5 lbs of salt for every 100 gallons of water in the pond.
I am adding 40lbs of Parasalt to my pond today. I have noticed my fish have parasite I think called Crustations.
so if I add 2.5 lbs per 100 gallons of pond..... how often do I had the salt? I live in South TN. Winters are not too bad. Although Christmas 2022 had some single digits. I left my pump running the entire time. My pond did freeze. But the water fall kept an opening in the ice in one area.
Salt never leaves until you change the water. It's a mineral. Sounds like you did fine. I can be reached at 888-713-7771 x4
Greetings- do you add natural liquid bacteria after sal treatment to outdoor pond?
Regards
Richard
South Africa
Yes. Bacteria and salt clears ponds well
I need help and I hope I you do see this. I have a pond and I’m seeing some of my fish flashing and one of my biggest koi that is 16” flashing and jumping. Notice this 2 days ago and never had anything like this happened for my 2 going on 3 years of koi keeping. If it’s parasites, do you recommend Parasalt and if yes, how do I use it correctly without hurting my fishes… I’m really nervous and scared that they’ll die one by one
Call me. 888-713-7771
Currently in work but will be off in 5 hours. Thank you so much
The first course of action is to do a scrape and scope to see what parasites they are. You can't treat what you don't know.
Great video!! What kind of effects does salt have on the plant life in your ponds? Lilies, Iris, rush, etc. I noticed the pond you're treating had zero plants in it. For most pond people water "gardening" is a huge part of the experience.
Great question! The thumbnail picture for this video is a customer that has a salted pond.
My pond is 2200 gallons. How much salt would I need? Great video!
The formula is in the description. Thanks for the kind words and for watching.
I'm want to calculate my water volume with salt. I can't find a straight answer anywhere. I have a salinity digital meter. What is the formula? Let's say my current salinity is .06 how much salt should I add and what's the formula or math to figure out what I have after adding the salt? Thanks in advance for any information.
The formula is in the video description. The math is very simple. If you need help, please leave a voice-mail on my office number at 888-713-7771
How does beneficial bacteria react to pond salt? Will the salt kill it?
No skirt does not kill it
How much salt is enough to kill parasite and can’t higher that how much salt will hurt your koi, please let me know thanks
The answer is in the video description. My rule is .20 but it will affect plants. We salt our ponds at .17
i have a few ill koi. i gave them salt baths. still not helping. i will sprinkle a bit into the pond
Where r u located?
United Kingdom. Water here is hard@@ColumbiaWaterGardens
Have you ever put salt on a fresh spring water pond?
No. I'm not sure what the benefits would be. I would think the salt wound dilute quickly losing benefit if the spring is filling it and the pond is constantly losing what the spring fills.
Yeah, I have fresh spring water and I build a pond around it. I have some Koi there and I came across your video so I was curious. My Koi seem to be happy and I haven’t had any problems like what you were talking about. But thank you.
Hello, we bought a house last year that has a basin with about 18 very large goldfish. The basin is about 3 m3 . The fish are really sick. Several have ulcers on their sides and today I noticed two may have lost an eye. A few months ago I used a chemical water treatment to try to save a fish with a swim bladder issue. Two fish died shortly after. I added some good bacteria and have been cleaning the filter every week but I went away and the filter broke and it was about two weeks the basin was left unfiltered. I used some Indian Almond leaves for the ulcers. The ulcers seem better but now I'm seeing the eye problems. Will salt help? I want to drain and clean but I simply can't handle it. I actually have a weird phobia of fish. I like them, and but I am very nervous around them. Also, we are living in the south of France and I have no idea who to ask for help here.
If I salt the water, would I then have to change the water eventually?
Thanks for reaching out :)
Sorry for your fish loss, what you are describing commonly comes from poor water quality and under filtration.
Salt will help as it aids in the production of slime coat which is the fishes primary immune system. It also draws out toxins through osmosis and kills most of the common pathogenic bacteria.
Read the description in this video for instructions.
I would salt your pond at .25 on the digital meter, starting day 1 at a 1/3 dose, with equal doses following day 1.
Your situation is severe. The eyes bulging is an indication of internal infection, so you need to understand that you may have additional fish loss.
If there is a pond professional in your area that can clean your pond of the sludge, lightly power wash the rocks and sides (do not completely clean), clean the filters, and detoxify the water before reintroducing your fish - I would highly recommend it.
You may lose your fish, but trying is better than giving up.
Bon chance, mon amie!
-Carl
Thank you Carl. You are amazing for being so helpful
If we were going to try to clean the basin ourselves, where would we keep the fish while cleaning? Do we use our well water in that container? Do we refill with well water or town chlorinated water (with water conditioner)
ua-cam.com/video/IRI3Cm-Pe34/v-deo.html
Do you only add salt if your fish are sick?
No. Most of the 60+ ponds we maintain are salted.
Can you use table salt?
No. Table salt has iodine.
Since plants don't like the salt....I remove the plants....when can I put the plants back in the pond?
As long as the salt level is below .21, you may see a little bit of browning, but most plants are generally hardy. Watch you water temperatures at a 52 degree threshhold.
Will the salt hurt my pond plants? Water lettuce, hyacinth, lilies....
If your salt exceeds .23 it can have a negative effect on plants.
Is the salt for treatment specifically or can it be used consistently as a preventative?
We use it as a preventative measure for ponds we service, and as a first treatment for incoming clients.
Awesome. Thank you so much.
Are you still doing videos?
I had to take a break. My mom got very ill and it's been hard on me to maintain balance.
I have tons of content filmed and will be resuming this spring.
Thank you for caring to ask. :)
Very 😭👍🏾
Thank you. It's sad that people don't do their research and duliscover this fantastic remedy
very good video. i like 33 :) i wait my channel
Thanks 👍
guess by your math i need 10 tons of salt for a real pond?
hope my well water dont go bad...
You must have a hell of a pond.
