  • One of our viewers recently asked us about using salt in a Koi pond, and if it's a good tonic or a treatment. Salt is used widely as a Koi treatment in Japan and in this video Ricky gets down to detail on if he thinks it is something that Koi hobbyists should be using in their own ponds, and how it is used by Koi breeders and here at Koi Wholesale.

    Another great video and insight into your use of salt Ricky. As a hobbyist I'm always very reluctant to use salt in my pond I do however salt bath koi when my fish are looking stressed and I haven't been able to find any parasites. I a firm believer that salt is essential for the recovery of the Osmosis system and the fishes ability produce mucus.
    Thanks for the video, it's always interesting to know how dealers use salt too.👍

      I hear that a lot that people are reluctant and don’t quite understand it. I do however see very few cases where it would be needed for hobbyists.

    Unfortunately due to government regulations the majority of treatments like you have in the UK to deal with parasites are no longer available so salt is one of our main go tos when it comes to treating koi so having some on hand is a must. A salt meter is one of the best purchases you can make. Also important to remember is every time you do a water change or filter clean where water is sent to waste adding water changes the salt level so monitoring is crucial.

      @@KoiWholesale I live in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada about 50km east of Toronto. A few years back the government brought in a pesticide ban that included things like weed control products, insect control, etc and unfortunately its broad range also included koi related products. Supposedly the ban was to minimize cancer risk but big money places like golf courses can still used the banned products (guess we know who is paying off the government officials and leaving the normal tax payer out in the cold).

    Hi Ricky, love the videos 👍👍I have a parasite problem and have used FMG. I now want to salt my pond as the koi look stressed and are on the bottom, but can't use salt with formalin. How long do I have to wait to put the salt in the pond. I would be very grateful for any help you can give. Terry.

    Just rewatched the video to see what you thought about salt. I'm currently facing 0.93 ppm nitrite levels in my koi pond right now with the introduction of a higher based protein food. The water temp is 65-67F (18.3-19.4C) and I have introduced salt to my pond. The levels have been elevated for close to 2 weeks now and was wondering if you have any suggestions? My ammonia level is spot on being around 0.04 ppm when feeding. Thank you!

    • @KoiWholesale
      @KoiWholesale  2 роки тому

      Salt baths are effective for individual fish but don’t help against the free swimming parasites. You also need to be accurate with the dosage otherwise they can be fatal.
