    Thank you, seven year old unhappy guys right now... mixed just a couple pounds into my pond last night after water changes, and including Stress Relief to de chlorinate, reduce ammonia (good stuff I’ve found over the years). Just the 2-3 lbs I added late last night seems to have made everyone happy! Going to keep the solution weaker than 1 pound to 100 gallons to start. Good video! Heading to Home Depot now! I’ve avoided any real salt use until now-but I’m going to join this “school.”

    Have raised Koi for 25 years! Only have used salt in the water! Never had to chemically treat my fish for any kind of parasite! There's nothing better than salt. My fish are healthy and happy.

    Hey thanks for this, very insightful and informative, I have a small over ground pond, about 5000 gallons, I have never added salt, but I seen some jumping ( not a lot) and I read that sometimes parasites cause this behavior, I also read that occasional jumping is ok, in any instance, it is good to know the benefits of salt on the pond water whether there are parasites or not... Thanks again!

    I wouldn't say that's normal but you should be able to clear up the foaming with some partial water changes. Run some fresh water in there (be sure to dechlorinate if needed) and put about 10 to 15 percent fresh water in every day for a few days and see if that helps.

    yes koi will jump when they have external parasites. I have a 5,000 gallon pond and mine calls for 40 pound bag of salt. I know it spunds crazy, the first time I put it in I was scared to death! The koi I had in there were 18 years old and once that salt went in they were thrilled! They wanted to swim from one side to the other as fast as they could they were thrilled! So come spring I dont miss putting salt in. Its important for the health of the koi, its very important!

    I also salt in my garden holes before I place baby plants.
    this litle bit of salt, carry trace minerals with it,
    people, animals and yes plants need trace elements
    and salt is a lot cheaper than commercial fertilizers.
    yes you can over do it, but your plants will produce more

      Putting salt in the ground can result in the ground becoming permanently infertile. Ancient Rome salted Carthage and to this day nothing will grow in the earth there - 2,000 years later.

    advise using percentages rather for comprehension and ease of memory. metric has direct correlation to whole numbers
    1 litre volume water = 1 kilo gram mass of water = 1000 grams mass ( 1000 litre volume = 1 meter x 1m x 1m ) = ( 1000 kg)
    salt ave pond = 0.2 % to 0.5 % = 2 to 5 grams : 1000 grams water or 1 litre of water = 2 / 1000 X 100 = 0.2 % or 5/1000x100 = 0.5 %
    6000 litre pond needs say 0.2% = 2 g salt X 6000 litre or 6000 kg water = 12 000 g salt = 12 kg salt = 12/2,2 = lbs or pounds

    I have a large pond I built for swimming. For 10 years it's been great. This year it is full of pond scum - green algae. I don't know why. Any ideas of what I can do?

      Hi Laurie...so how's the weather been where you are located? Has it been pretty normal or are you getting a lot of rain and such?

    Is it okay to add salt water ?

    I usually do somewhat of a water change every week. Because of cleaning out the filter how often should i re apply
    Salt.. Thanks

      Victor Koons Personally I wouldn't worry too much about it. Particularly if the water changes are kind of minimal. Fresh water is probably better for the pond than salt anyway. Ideally you'd have a salinity meter to know where you are on salt concentrations and then follow the recommended guidelines as noted the article I listed below. Decent ones can be found online for less than $100 but you can probably find many even cheaper on ebay. I think I would use one of those rather than guessing too much. Then only apply the salt as needed.

      Victor Koons if your going to keep your salt at 0.1 to 0.3 get a salt meter there great , lol after owning my pond for 21 years and always saying I am going to get one I finally did and there great and easy to read. . I keep my salt at 0.3 it’s good for parasites at 0.3 😁👍🐟🐟🐟

    I calculated I would need 3000 lbs of salt for my dugout ,is this practical ? I haven’t done a salinity test lately.

    • @klmsolutions
      @klmsolutions 5 років тому

      It's not practical in my mind. Is there a particular reason you're wanting to add salt? And with trout...no, I wouldn't do it.

    Can pool salt be used in ponds

    • @klmponds
      @klmponds  4 роки тому

      Hi Rick...I must admit I know nothing about pool salt. That said, as long as there are not additives...I would say yes...anything else other than pure salt, I wouldn't risk it.

    • @atticussfinch9001

      I have been researching this... pool salt came up as a no-no! I’m going with the water softener salt as the recommended here.

    How about rock salt

    • @klmponds
      @klmponds  7 років тому +1

      Rock salt would probably be fine as long as there are no additives in there other than salt.

    0.1 to 0.2%... I don't quite understand how you get those percentages with a pounds to gallon ratio... can you refer me to a source on how salinity is measured (ppt, ppm?) other than by electrocuting the water? lol I have a salinity meter, but I'd like to understand better how your ratio makes sense. I'm better equipped for understanding metric measurements so pounds and gallons are like malarkey to me.

      I don't know if I can put links in the comments but there is info on koivet dot com that I've found useful. koivet.com/a_salt_ciliates.html

      Guess it worked. Salt dosing is noted on here and might be helpful to you.

    • @VegaChastain
      @VegaChastain 10 років тому +1

      Oh yes... I was just curious as to the ratio since pounds and gallons measure different things (weight vs. volume). I could understand if it were grams to liters as 1g=1ml. The Imperial measurements are so antiquated - can anyone actually use them for any purpose really?
      I also found this: www.varitech-industries.com/pdfs/Salt%20Brine%20Statistics%20and%20Rock%20Salt.pdf
      So I see that the percentages are pretty close to actual measure (only off about .5%).

    I used about .8 pounds of salt for my pond, about 125 gallons, I noticed it started foaming. Is it normal to foam? How do I stop it?

    Please, for every koi beginner on youtube, if you really want to have healthy fish, do NOT EVER put salt directly into your koi pond! Salt is just as harmfull for koi as it is for humans, carp simply are fresh water fish and cannot tollerate living in salt water for a long period of time, they will live much shorter, will be extremely stressed and probably won't grow. If you want to use salt ( because it has the benefit of killing parasites ect.) please put your fish into a separate tank, put salt in that water and leave them for about 10 minutes, this will do the job just fine and it does not harm your fish too much. After that 10 minute bath they can go back into their nice freshwater pond. This will leave you with happy, growing, longliving, fish :)
