  • Hi it's Lee from the Japanese Water Gardens. In this video I am going to explain everything you b should know about salt. When to use it in your pond and when not too. How to give a salt bath, how much salt to use, the benefits and the drawbacks of Salt.
    Talk to half a dozen Koi keepers and you will get half a dozen different opinions about salt. Some people never use salt, after all carp are freshwater fish and it's not natural for them. Others will tell you they run there pond with a constant level of salt and believe it to be a magical panacea for every fish ailment, and pond problem too for that matter.
    There are times when Koi definitely do appear to benefit from a dose of salt in the pond or a ten minute salt bath. So let me explain what I think about salt and let's see if we can make some sense out of it all.

      @@leecalladine it’s good to not have to listen to all the twaddle lol I have a 20000ltr pond and one of my koi is showing signs of dropsy so I’m looking for info on how best to treat it

      dropsy is tricky, lots of reasons why it can happen. There isn't any particular treatment, sometimes salt can help or perhaps an anti bacterial. good luck

      @@leecalladine I’ve done all the tests on water quality and there all within spec I’m honking it’s a parasite
      I get a lot of frogs/toads in my pond that could have brought them into it
      I’m using blagdons anti ulcer treatment at the moment first trying to treat the whole pond then if no success I will isolate the fish and try other options

    Hi. Very nicely tailored video.
    I had a new pond built and bought new fish from a seller that was getting rid off. Sellers pond was filled with algae and muddy. At first I thought the Gold fish some of them about 20cm are pregnant due to bulged bowel. Which later realised it could be swim bladder disease. There is a few in my pond now.
    I have been asked to add some dose for Chlorine levels due to tap water in pond filled and equally some aquatic chemical been added to encourage some necessary bacterial growth.
    1. Looking at your video, can I do the exercise adding salt to my pond?
    2. My pond is about 6500 ltr capacity, so am I right in adding 9.5kg salt?
    3. Once salt added in pond, do I need to empty the pond and add new tap water 8n circulation or will the salt remain throughout and goes through the filtration process?
    4. and if you say that I need to empty the pond, what is the process and if I start to again add 5ap water in, should I start adding the aquatic chemicals from start again doing the process cycle?
    Please can you advise

    Hi Lee Problems with my chagnoi It has developed an invection which started off as a white cloudy patch It is very tame and will be a shame to lose it I have not treated it so far in the hope that it might get better by itself but I have also noticed that it has a small tail fin rot invection too How would you advise on treatment I have removed koi from ponds before but this one is very large and wonder whether to treat the whole pond instead with Pond Doctor Anti Bacteria Water Treatment My pond size is 7250 Ltrs Can you advise ASAP please

    Thx for answering my question Lee. However, I have another question for you 😅
    Is putting 1 skimmer in the side of your pond enough, no matter how big your pond is?
    Thx in advance, your Belgian fan

      The salt level is not so critical that it needs regular monitoring.

    Can table salt be used or is that the same as cooking salt?

    • @leecalladine
      @leecalladine  2 роки тому +1

      Table salt would be extremely expensive. Cooking salt much cheaper.

    For the salt bath isn’t a 2% dose 2 grammes per litre not 20 grammes per litre?

    • @leecalladine
      @leecalladine  4 роки тому

      No. 2g would be only 0.2%. 1 ltr=1000g 2% of 1000 is 20.

      The salt used in the video is purchased in 25kg bags. This product has been used for over 30 years for this purpose. Table Salt should be avoided due to it being processed and possibly containing additional agents. It is also prohibitively expensive. Table salt would be typically be used as a table condiment.
