Electronic systems with open diffs can get you a couple of hundred metres in an emergency but if you need to go a kilometre or more every one of these will break down long before you get there. The brakes will be completely shot and everything else in the drivetrain and suspension will be in need of major service.
As I look at all of the contenders trying to make it up a hill. There is room for improvement across the board. Eventually someone will come up with a way to drastically improve their performance. They just need to think outside of the box.

It's simple and not even expensive to add locking diffs and in the case of multiple-motor EVs software modes to keep the motors in sync. But there's no reason for manufacturers to do that when nobody needs it. All of the people buying crossovers and most of the people buying G Wagens would be much better served by an estate/station wagon or minivan, or even a standard sedan. The whole point of crossovers and SUVs for manufacturers is higher profit margins, and for most buyers is to be high and mighty.

Honestly the G wagon is the best 4x4 out there since it has all 3 locks since it came out. If it cost as much as a jeep even in 2nd hand i tell you they rather get the G63 with their insane v8

And at least here in Finland those WK's cost a fraction of a G wagon, so in a way it's a clear winner. But G wagon certainly can be modified way beyond WK to make it just a monstertruck with portal axles and enough lift to allow grown man crawl on all fours under it 😂

It can do so much more. Went to a off-road track a while back witb a few buddies of mine. They all had pick-ups. Theh all laughed at me in the beginning. No-one laughed at the end... I own previous model. Think the new one's TC might react a little faster

It’s an off road master. Range Rovers may be equal, or very close. Problem is, they are highly likely to break down. The G-Wagen probably won’t. Major downside to the G, is the fuel tank range. OK people who can afford one are maybe not bothered about fuel cost. But having to stop every 300-350 miles might be a pain for a long road trip - especially off road.
The Touareg here ha really impressed me. Especially considering that they used the 2.0 Turbocharged Petrol and not the 3.0 Turbocharged V6 Diesel which has loads more torque and horepower. Leave alone the Turbo-charged dieel V8.
The amount and the extent of the explanation is so comprehensive that no trolls can talk shit. Extremely well informed vid and they actually understand the momentum vs wheels vs ability of different cars. Really enjoyed this one!

Hello from Canada. Love what you are doing here. Tests like this are more relevant, most people don't have custom tires etc. This really shows the off-road ability of these cars for the typical weekend adventures. Please keep up the good work. Tesla did better than I thought. If it wasn't for those silly doors (can't have roof rack) I would consider one.
@@bivashthakur9199 All depends on what aspect, in some cases the X5 has better clearance.. but overall obviously the G wagon without the AMG package is a better off-roader. The G wagon has front diffs and center diffs that the X5 doesn’t have. But the G05 simply is more stable off-road it does most of the off-road safe and easy. The X5 is lighter as well and more balance and depending on the obstacle it will handle that better too.
I'm glad he said that the G and the FJ were clearly the better ones in comparison and already would have outperformed. Those two should have compared to others truly in their class.

I think the RR has the better terrain management system. Mercedes traction control system seems slower to activate. But the G63 does have 3 locking differentials. I think the RR will win in regular drive mode. G63 in off road mode. And the RR with the overall win. Can’t wait for the video. Yes I am subscribed with the bell!!

The G wagon is in a class of its own. i mean on pure street tiers and factory suspension it outclases all the cars in this video. It also has by far the best engine sound with that deep V8 which dosent even rev during this whole segment.. Just amazing.

@@SUVBattle I don't know what vehicles you get over there, but a large suv test with things like the infiniti QX80, Toyota Sequoia, LX 570, Cadillac Escalade/Chevy Suburban, Lincoln Navigator/ford expedition, etc. Also we don't get a lot of vehicles or engines in the US that you guys get, so I'd love to see some of those.
Why is the model x in "Slip start" mode? This mode specifically allows wheel slip, try without slip start next time. That specific old ML didn't have off road mode all I can see from the center console is he engaged airmatic lift. Offroad mode in those MLs have a dial on the right side where the airmatic lift button is at. Did the G wagon also used front diff lock? Love your 4x4 tests.
I like the vw, it’s not the best, but it’s close. I have to say that I didn’t expected it to be that good. The Nissan was expected and I was expecting more out of the new gle. Also, the Tesla is more of a road focused suv, so I wasn’t surprised by it’s results at all
Excellent videos! I don't really have an interest in off-road driving but I'm watching to get a sense of the quality of each vehicle. Even though tires matter a lot, it's still very informative.
Owing to growing popularity of electric vehicles, please consider doing a similar video featuring Volvo XC90 T8 hybrid, Audi eQ7, Lexus, Merc, Jag etc. We know they're milder offroaders, but it would be interesting and quite informative to see how far and in different drive modes they'd go as compared to their pure ICE counterparts. And consider loading new content weekly at the very least to increase your subs. Otherwise, this is a great channel, unlike others talking more about SUVs in parking lots or driving them on tar roads than showing us their offroading capabilities. Congrats and all the best
Luckily Tesla changed the wording in the current warranty-1-29-20. If the X is caught on "unfinished roads or used in any competition it voids the warranty. It used to be any off-roading would void it.
Based on comments I was so focused on touareg and g class that I didn't realise how well the x5 did. That too the old one. It was smooth and predictable. No issues
time to see teh suzuki jimny (old and new) for comparison, and of course an offroad master, jeep wrangler (or pretty much 2/3 of the jeep lineup)... would be pretty fun to see something with all differentials locked up and physical control showing its superiority XD really enjoyed the model x, hope for more evs in this test, not that there are many ofroad capable ones at the moment...

It's a good idea to throw older cars like the 2013 ML(GLE) in the mix, or make a video with older models for those who want to buy a second hand car.

It's a 2017 G-Wagen. It hasn't seen a real change since the 1970's.
If it was a 2020 model however, then you would be right with your point, as it has been redesigned completely.

@@SUVBattle I don't know what vehicles you get over there, but a large suv test with things like the infiniti QX80, Toyota Sequoia, LX 570, Cadillac Escalade/Chevy Suburban, Lincoln Navigator/ford expedition, etc. Also we don't get a lot of vehicles or engines in the US that you guys get, so I'd love to see some of those.

Why is the model x in "Slip start" mode? This mode specifically allows wheel slip, try without slip start next time.
That specific old ML didn't have off road mode all I can see from the center console is he engaged airmatic lift. Offroad mode in those MLs have a dial on the right side where the airmatic lift button is at.
Did the G wagon also used front diff lock?

I like the vw, it’s not the best, but it’s close. I have to say that I didn’t expected it to be that good. The Nissan was expected and I was expecting more out of the new gle. Also, the Tesla is more of a road focused suv, so I wasn’t surprised by it’s results at all
Excellent videos! I don't really have an interest in off-road driving but I'm watching to get a sense of the quality of each vehicle. Even though tires matter a lot, it's still very informative.

Owing to growing popularity of electric vehicles, please consider doing a similar video featuring Volvo XC90 T8 hybrid, Audi eQ7, Lexus, Merc, Jag etc.
We know they're milder offroaders, but it would be interesting and quite informative to see how far and in different drive modes they'd go as compared to their pure ICE counterparts.
And consider loading new content weekly at the very least to increase your subs.
Otherwise, this is a great channel, unlike others talking more about SUVs in parking lots or driving them on tar roads than showing us their offroading capabilities.

Luckily Tesla changed the wording in the current warranty-1-29-20. If the X is caught on "unfinished roads or used in any competition it voids the warranty. It used to be any off-roading would void it.

Based on comments I was so focused on touareg and g class that I didn't realise how well the x5 did. That too the old one. It was smooth and predictable. No issues

suprised by Touareg and I expected more from the Murano
Imagine being out offroading with your friends with real vehicles and this squad rolls up
time to see teh suzuki jimny (old and new) for comparison, and of course an offroad master, jeep wrangler (or pretty much 2/3 of the jeep lineup)...
would be pretty fun to see something with all differentials locked up and physical control showing its superiority XD
really enjoyed the model x, hope for more evs in this test, not that there are many ofroad capable ones at the moment...
