Your thrifting adventures are fun! For the smaller quantities, look at the Sophie or Rip Tide scarf. They are easy to do with varying amounts. For some of the small quantities, think about random stripes on a solid MC sweater. And for any of the colors you aren't crazy about, dye them! You can easily over dye. Cellulose fibers are as easy to dye as protein fibers, you just need different dyes. I know your creativity will give you something wonderful!
I think that med blue would be a nice colour for you. I don't buy white as it gets dirty too easily. The small amounts of yarn might make a cowl/small neck shawl or some fingerless gloves etc. I'm knitting now after starting my journey with crochet 😊
For your mystery fibers...have you done burn tests? It's really great to differentiate between cellulose, hair and synthetics...not as good for narrowing down to which cellulose, or percentages, but gives you a pretty good idea what's going on in there
I have done that!!! I feel like sometimes it’s extremely helpful and other times it leaves me more confused than I was when I started 😂 I need to do more research on how I can really determine the differences!!
@@akaNoraKnits I find the smell and the resulting ash makes the biggest determination! And wool is self-extinguishing so will burn out what acrylic and cellulose will burn freely usually! The more you do the more clear it becomes haha
The yellow chenille would also make a great throw blanket- very soft and cuddly and a great color for spring/summer. I like the hemp blend for a handbag or project bag with a nice smooth lining.
Finally somebody else has the opinion, that knitting does not have to be expensive. I love collecting second hand yarn, I use wool blend yarns, even acrylics. In December I bought a cone of beautiful silk yarn, which is more than 1 kilo for 10 euros.
This was a very fun, cozy video to watch while I swatched up some yarns from my own stash! You are a much better saver than I am... maybe I will try to start thrifting yarns when I get that new yarn itch :D
Still in the middle of watching the video, but I just wanted to suggest maybe trying your hand at dyeing the yarns if you don't like the color? I've done that a few times over the past year by blasting it with one of the Rit dyes (both for natural materials or acrylics) , or if you want to get into natural dyes, they would take well with some of the lighter colors you have. I have a monster peachy/coral yarn on a cone that I've dyed a few different colors to incorporate into my projects simply by dyeing over it, so maybe it could be something for you to look into.
Im an avid thrifter and know all the stores near me with good selections. I even got some HiyaHiya circulars a few times! My best find was 3300 yarns of unscoured aran-weight wool from a 70s afghan kit. I still haven’t decided if I’m going to make a blanket or a couple of Aran sweaters! Overall, I have way too much yarn that I’m not sure what I will do with. I too am mostly a garment maker and I love jackets and sweaters. It’s hard to resist a single skein of something nice but I have no idea what I’m going to do with them!!! I don’t like to collect just to collect as some do, but it’s hard to pass up a really good deal. Also, I love storing my yarn in hanks but people always seem to donate them already caked up. I’m seriously considering taking my swift out and re-hanking most of my collection…
I'd love to know where you go thrifting to find such nice yarn, I always look at the yarn to but have never found anything worth buying and it's usually in a big plastic zip bag that would fit a bedspread
You could hold the blue yarn/thread double or triple and use it for multiple projects. Also holding it double with other yarns would tone it down, either bare or even black/gray yarn?
Lovely! I try not to precake yarn. But when I do have it, either leftover or waiting for the next project, I try to store them in something. My favorite is to take dollar store socks! Shorties with the heel/cuff cut off make great yarn cozies!
I went and looked at the stats on my stash before I even clicked on the video. 🫣 How I fit 257 skeins in my yarn cabinet is beyond me. And that price tag....😮💨 I need to start knitting faster! editing to add that absolutely none was thrifted, which is extra scary. You're awesome!
It must be so exciting, though, to know that at any moment, you can just decide to knit something and have yarn there ready to go!!! It’s hard to find the balance. Wishing you speedy knitting!!
Nora you’re great! I clicked on this because my little girl is Norah, and she knits too! She is little though, I got her hooked when she was 6, and she’s made scarves and blankets for her stuffies. Super fun video and makes me reevaluate my spending full price, thousands of dollars later. Ugh 😩
Awww I love to hear of a little Norah! And a knitter at that 🥹 so sweet! Everyone has a different stash…I try to keep balance to mine, but more than anything, I just find it helpful to be aware of how much I’ve invested in my hobby
Is there a special reason for cakeing up that little ball of merino? I have used balls like that and I just pull out the yarn end from the hole in the middle where the band goes through. The ball sits nicely (doesn't roll around) and it keeps its shape until the very last metres.
Boy did I need your happiness today! What a tremendous job you did in thrifting your yarn! Your, “Hotdog” yarn to me looks like Caron Simply Soft yarn. It’s the sheen in the yarn! Ooh something I didn’t think about until just now . . .because someone mentioned bugs . . .when you being home your thrifted yarn you should put it in the freezer! This way if there are moths they won’t get to your wool yarn!
Thank you!!! I know for sure that the hot dog yarn is wool actually-I remember the packaging having sheep on it and I think I forgot to mention that it had the brand name and said wool lol…but it didn’t say anything more than that!
That is amazing!! Never see finds like that where I live....little scared to tally what my stash is worth paying full price!😬 Thanks for sharing! Happy Holidays!
Thank you!! I am thinking of the best way to host a little destash. I think I will wind up doing it formally on IG, but I will give notice here ahead of time!
That stash is amazing! I often find yarn at my thrift stores but almost always only cheap acrylic. I wonder if my timing is just bad, or if the crafters in my area just don't use that much nice yarn.
Wow! Thank you for sharing your thrifted yarn stash. It is amazing how much you saved. I love the sugar courage as it is also my favorite! An idea for the chenille yarn: maybe a beret or an accessory of some sort?
Nice…. I ❤ thrift yarn too but also sometimes just buy what I need for a specific project. I am getting pickier now that my stash is pretty big. Thanks for sharing. Heather
Good job!!! A couple of things. The Blackstone Tweed yarn is more of a single and breaks easily but it is wonderful yarn. I used 2 skeins to make a pair ofSusie’s Reading Mitts for a friend. I have 2 more skeins to make a pair for myself. Lopi yarn is excellent for felting, as Lambs Pride. Lopi is a little to rough for next to skin wear. I have made a lot of felted bags and Elf Shoes slippers for the family out of Lopi. Those are the yarns I have worked with other than like Sugar ‘n Cream, as I have made tons of dishcloths with picture designs as gifts. Everybody seems to love them. I am dying to know an update on your Christmas dress.
I soooo appreciate this information!!! Thank you so so much!!! The dress is coming along and we are getting dangerously close to Christmas 😅 it will either be done just in time or so close to being done that it will be annoyingly unfinished lol. I’ll be working until the very last moment!
Every year I use up those odd ball amounts and types of yarn by knitting hats that I give to our local food pantry for people in need. If you can't use the yarn there are probably local groups that would love it for charity knitting.
I was thinking felted slippers with the Iceland yarn and Sofie scarf with the camel hemp yarn. Oh I’m just green with jealousy with how much good yarn you found! Nice job!
Hi Nora. Your yarn that has the heavy spinning oil on it could possibly be Holst Super Soft. I think it is a Norwegian yarn. I loved watching this video today.
Such lovely yarns! Are you aware of the burn test for figuring out fiber types? It's pretty easy to use for differentiating acrylic and natural fibers. Within the natural fibers, it can be a bit harder to tell between them, but it can be done with practice.
So fun! Thanks so much for sharing! I love thrifting yarn, and recently found a whole bag full of various wool yarns in my local goodwill. So exciting!❤
Triple up the blue cotton cones and crochet a bath mat or a dog bed. Either there are no other knitters in my area or none who ever destash. I have never found anything other than big box store acrylics and it wasnt much cheaper than buying it new haha. Apparently
holy cow Nora, what an interesting and impressive stash of thrifted yarn! Are you implying that your FIRST sweater was made in 2023 and you're already such an incredible garment knitter??? I'm also a former crocheter and dont know what to do with all my old acrylic. is it better to use it all up and give the products away or donate them? such is my dilemma.
Thank you so much! I picked up the needles as my New Year’s resolution this year! I feel like they’re nice to hang on to for right now, while I have the space to store them. I’ve found it useful to have when trying out new techniques and I don’t want to cut the good yarn! But I might wind up consolidating all my acrylic at some point and donating the rest
There is a local church group that happily accepts acrylic yarns. They make blankets for the homeless shelter. There may be a similar group in your area. 12:33
May I please ask what you are wearing? It is very cute. I don't think that I have ever seen yarn in my local thrifts stores but would be fun to buy "cheap" mystery yarns. Edit: Oh and I also forgot to say I really like your eye-makeup 😃such a nice colour.
I also have thrifted Reynolds Saucy in my stash!!! I have 4 skeins and it should be just enough to eek out a ranunculus tee. Yes I did take it home based on name alone 😂😂😂
I luv that you thrift yarn... I have a question though... how do you wash it? I've tried thrifting yarn in the past and had seen in the little zip lock bag it came in, what looked like dead bugs... and was completely turned off after that... have you come across this problem while thrifting yarn??
Great question!!! So far, I’ve been really fortunate in my thrifting finds and haven’t needed to do much more than use a wool wash. But I’m definitely interested in learning different ways to make sure I’m protecting the yarn once it’s in my home!
I have heard a lot of people say its a good idea to stick any thrifted yarn in the freezer for 48 hours or so in case there are any sneaky moth eggs you may not see. Obviously you can wash once you're finished with the project but don't want any stowaways! Proud thrifter here- it's always exciting to find something *fancy!*
Great stash! 😅 I visit the alternative yarn places and find some great stuff sometimes, only don't know what they are exactly. 😊 Oo I love the blue yarn you have (wool)! I have blue Mohair which would pair with it perfectly... I would love it ❤❤

omg this is an amazingggg stash of thrift yarns. WHERE the heck are you thrifting??? and can I come with? 👀 the only yarns I ever see at the thrift shop are big bags of red heart super saver lol no thanks! 😭
Hahaha trust me, I have seen those too! I have been to just about every goodwill across CT and I have had way more failed searches than successful ones! But I have been very lucky!!
I have seen many different opinions on protocols for what people prefer to do with their second-hand yarn. I don't have a perfect system yet, but I do always wash before wear!
If you still have the cones of maybe cotton blue, I'd love to buy or trade for them. Let me know and I can email you. Very impressive finds. How awesome that you are able to check out a variety of different thrift stores for 2nd hand fibers. My local Goodwill and ReStore never seem to have yarn of any kind but maybe with so many new people trying out yarn crafts they might get some in the New Year.
I’ll be hosting a formal destash on my instagram soon I think! I’ve had a lot of interest, so I just want to organize something to make it the most fair. Thank you!
This was very interesting. I have seen yarn in thrift stores a few times but it’s either been acrylic or eyelash yarn or such a knotted mess I had no interest.
The ‘miscellaneous hot dog yarn’ had me laughing a little too much. You are adorable 🤣
Hahaha thank you for laughing with me!!
