It has to be said (again?) here: It's so great that you are not just another podcaster who knits all of PetiteKnit's patterns. Not even the famous Zipper Sweater! 🎉 Nothing wrong with her patterns, I sure knit them, but I that's exactly why I don't need to see other people knit them over and over and over again ... 😂

Thank you so much for noticing! I do try and keep a diverse list of designers that I am trying and hope to make it even more of a priority this year! Although, I am certain I will knit a Petite Knit pattern at some point, I just want to spread the wealth a little bit!

For your next Musselburgh weigh the yarn as soon as you've finished the crown increases. This way you have a rough idea how much you need for the other end 😊
Also, you bring us so much joy every week! You deserve all the things!!! Xx

I actually did! But I’ve heard people say you should weight the skein before you begin so that you know exactly how many grams came on it, as it’s apparently not always consistent with the label 😅 hopefully it works out this time! Thank you so so much!! 🥰

I would definitely block your cardigan before the bands as it’s so textured. I like the rapid decreases and they should block out fine. I do love that Ranunculus it’s a gorgeous colour. PS, loved that peach hair 😍

Knitting on my husband’s Christmas sweater that didn’t quite get done on time and watching your podcast. Here we never take down decorations until after 12th night/Feast of the Epiphany. That’s the actual end of the 12 days of Christmas so I myself am enjoying seeing your lights are still up. ❤

Forewarning, that’s a pretty big sweater pattern and superwash wool WILL GROW-more than you can even test by swatching, due to the weight of the garment. If you’re knitting it in the round, I highly recommend you add a single extra purl stitch down each side seam and then go back and do a mattress stitch “seam”. This technique will help the sweater drape better and not twist.

LOVE the story about your dad and his shacket 😂 My dad is so similar about the things I have made him and is one of my few knit-worthies. I'm so excited about the cardigan progress. It's such a lovely color. I want to make myself a cardigan this year with the fisherman's wool in the really dark, chocolate brown that they have. Idk exactly the pattern though because I want it to be like a grandpa cardigan.

Definitely block the cardigan before knitting the button band. It’ll ensure everything lays flat and will be easier to pick up.

Hi 😊 On the Mussleborough, I’ve made a few fingering weight and, notwithstanding size/gauge, I weigh after I’ve finished the increases to see what I’ve used and it tends to be 10g - I know not really useful for you but a ballpark 15g remaining should see you right for the decreases? Take care x

Keep in mind with the superwash 220 yarn that the sleeves and the length of garment will grow at least an inch after washing and blocking due to it being superwash yarn. Just be aware of the lengths as you’re going so it doesn’t end up being stretched out too much.

Good advice. Also, the 220 is not really a worsted weight yarn. It’s between a DK and worsted. That’s probably why it looks so airy.

Starting the year off with a blast, huh Nora? Love your videos. When you lifted up your dad’s shacket my jaw dropped. Goodness lady, it looks great & you have been booking- again I’m inspired. Also, thank you for your zoom in shots, with both the swatch & on your acquired goods. One of my favorites parts about knitting is seeing what fabric is produced based on tensions, needle size etc. so thank you!
In my Napoleon Dynamite voice:::: “Lucky!” Regarding your gifts. I’m a big fan of Lolabean knits & Black Purl Magic. You have made such an impact in the knitting world, how cool! 😊 Very best wishes for 2024 for you. I continue to admire & be inspired by you. Take care, Anna

Great episode! I knit my dad a vest with Cascade 220 and I swear, I had all the same thoughts running through my head, same concerns and strategy. The vest ended up fitting great except for one mistake I made in blocking. I let it dry on a hanger for the last bit of blocking, I’m not sure why I did that but it ended up stretching down and while he loves the vest, he said it “feels like a dress” oh no! Not the effect I was going for.. He still wears it anyways. I really enjoy your podcast. I loved that little blast into your past with that awesome hair color. Northampton used to be my old stomping grounds when I was young. I loved Haymarket coffee shop. I didn’t knit back then so I missed out on going into NE’s greatest yarn shop in person. I order online all the time now and I love their bulk order discount. Looking forward to your next episode!

Thank you!!! It’s so hard to figure out a good “dad length” especially because we are the same size, but I know we wouldn’t want our sweaters to hit at the same point 😅 I’m definitely keeping that weigh down in mind! Thank you for the reminder. I will have to add that coffee shop to my notes for the next time I get back to webs! I hope you get a chance to visit them at some point!! It’s just so much fun 💛

I am learning to pin your finished object but not your swatch. Wash it and dry it as you will your finished project but dont try to pin it flat and shape it. Your swatch will be more accurate and the yarn characteristics will be more genuine to what they will do in the garment without extra manipulation. Sometimes it will not make much difference and other times it changes everything. Just something i have just learned myself. Anyway lovely projects. So inspiring as always! Happy new year!

Do you only swatch flat or do you swatch in the round when the pattern is in the round? Many claim their gauge is different for each. Just wondering if you've compared and what your experience has been. 🤔

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  8 місяців тому

I don’t usually swatch in the round. I have heard the same thing, but I have found that my tension is (somehow) not different from flat to in the round knitting. I do wonder if there are other influences that could contribute to that 🤔 like yarn composition or continental vs. English style knitting? There are so many variables, but so far I have not felt the need to swatch on the round!

for sure fully block your sweater before you do the double knit button band!!!!!!!!!!! block it the same way you are going to take care of it when you inevitably wash it. you also need to swatch and block your double knitting to see if it’s going to come out at an acceptable gauge. if your button band is too small of gauge it will look like it shrunk and the rest of the cardigan will look baggy on both sides in a bad way. if your gauge is too big it will stretch out in the middle and look weird there too. either one will look bad with it buttoned but in my opinion if you had to shoot for one or the other i think being a slightly larger gauge wouldn’t be as obvious with the cardigan worn open. because of the basket weave you could probably make it work and just aggressively block. just don’t be too off! good luck!!!

Hi Nora, love to watch your videos❤ you So funny and open hearted, it feels refreshing😊.
I already donne this sweater, the “man” sweater but I would changed this:
I’ll do the colar double folded like de instructions from the “zipper sweater” from petit knit. Very “professional” finishing.
The sleeves were a pain. To large and sloppy.
I have some notes in my Ravelry page with the name: Balumuka
About the needles i had the same problem, didn’t know how to storage them untill I found the way that worked for me, I don’t know if i can send you a picture (not very good with technology 😅) but i found a little folder with zipper bags, it’s perfect because you organize by needle sizes and you can see them all!🎉🎉🎉 double winning😂

I’m not expert, but I would block first due the fact that I would expect the pattern of the body behave differently than the Stockinette on blocking. Although, if you could (and wanted) to block two swatches (one of each pattern) you would be able to measure the rate of change of each one after blocking and take off the thrill of trying to guess. Is getting beautiful BTW! Good luck 😊!

I know so many peeps love the mussleburgh, but I find it tedious and the worst of sleeve island. I guess it's great for on the go and movie knitting. I need neither. I like the national parks hats. Good luck. 🥱😴

I’d like to try some other popular hat patterns this year! I have enjoyed this as a pretty no-fuss hat to reach for when I need, but definitely not something to get done in a timely manner. Thank you!!

Yes!!!!! Block before you pick up..... it will be alot easier to keep the ribbing from bunching up and having to redo the band...... and their is a pattern you might want to check out.... its called the Love Note by tincan knits..... it only takes a small amount of yarn and it's a fun pattern as well...

Wow, the shacket and sweater you’re making for your Dad are amazing! 😍 Your Korshavn cardigan and Musselburgh hat WIPs are also gorgeous and everything you make looks like it came from a boutique so I can see how your Dad might not be able to wrap his head around the fact that you made his shacket from scratch! All the gifts from Shala were so thoughtful and gorgeous! Especially the neon peach fuzz yarn and your throwback picture! You really rocked that hairstyle and color! ❤️

It’s great you’re making your dad a sweater. I would really suggest taking that swatch and washing it the way you expect your parents to clean it. So throw it in the washer and hang dry or dryer as needed. They won’t be pinning or stretching it come the first wash so it is best not to do so to the swatch if you want a true representation. Your swatch looked so familiar as I too knit multi needle sizes into a swatch.

What is with the Christmas light debate? In my reality, almost everyone leaves their decorations up at least a week or two into January. Plus, the idea of JUDGING people over it is coo-coo. Some people put them up really early and some people put them up much closer to Christmas. How is this conversation even a thing? Is everyone neurotic now due to social media? Sorry to go off on that; loved the yarn talk, too!
