I totally relate to the feelings and motivations behind collecting. I am also a big collector of things (especially yarn). I love making things for my niece and nephew, they are definitely the biggest help in working through my stash.
If you have any grandkids who are the right age, I found a project that REALLY helped me was making play food sets! They are good because they use up so many different colours, but also don't feel overwhelming to tackle.
The kitty's are probably thinking...so many shelves to choose from!!!😂❤😂❤😊

That left me speachless!! When i tell you my chin dropped :D(without wanting to judge). This would stress me out sooo much because i have to know what i have and if possible have a plan for it. One that i can finish within the next few months. So i‘m impressed by how you are handling this yarn room!

Well, I really do hope that this project is making you feel better about your yarn. I moved from my three bedroom house into a very small one bedroom apartment, so I really don’t have room for a very big stash. Having said that, I have to admit That while my stash is tiny, compared to yours, it is in dire need of organizing. I just keep putting it off.
Because I am legally blind, and no longer drive I get most of my arm. I have doing this that I enjoy getting those boxes from Amazon, and other places filled with beautiful yarn. On the other hand, I can see that the space I have reserved for yarn filling up and an alarming rate. Not only that, but I have more whips and I am comfortable with. I actually bought a small Rey cart just to put the current whips in, so I would see them and hopefully work on them.
I am almost 81 years old, and live independently, and mostly charity crocheting. I enjoy crocheting, or knitting, blankets, and for local charities. As my vision gets worse, almost daily, I find that I am working more with lighter color yarn than the darker ones, and it is frustrating sometimes to have trouble doing something that I have done thousands of times , a little harder than it used to be. Fortunately, muscle memory comes to the rescue, and that is a big help.
Good luck to you in this huge project. You have set up fun. It won’t be long until your yarn is all organized, and that every it has found a home.❤
So sorry to read about your vision problems, not love your can-do spirit. I'm finding black harder to work with, as do a lot of our friends who work with yarn.

You need some of those big ikea cubbies and “divide” the room with them- like a library with the rows of bookshelves.
Looking at this much yarn causes me anxiety, it's so overwhelming. When I feel like that with my stash, I go thru and if I don't love it AND have a plan, I donate it to the senior center , the library crochet group or some teen crocheters at church. It's a win win.

Same! I have bought huge amounts of yarn that was on clearance over the past few years to just now start to work with it, and if I don’t love it, I’m gonna go donate the entire lot. Just had this happen with Yarn Bee Catalina. It’s the smaller version of Yarn Bee Glowing and I just don’t feel like I like how it works up. I have a HUGE lot of this yarn and many beautiful colors I’m gonna have to donate . It’s a bit of a relief to destash bc my hoard is overwhelming. I wish I knew this yarn more when I bought it but hope someone else can enjoy it.

Before I got into crochet, I was obsessed with puzzles and Karen puzzles. She would do these color/gradient puzzles, and sort out all the pieces and I loved doing that too.
I was very happy when I discovered crochet because it has many components that I love. Especially the potential to create anything you can think of.
I am enjoying your journey with your yarn. And thank you for sharing your mindset along the way. I also find that my hobbies line up with scenarios in my life and it teaches me my next lessons.

I love yarn. I love going to thrift stores and finding good deals on yarn. Crochet is therapy. Watching you organize while I crochet is like sitting with a "crochet therapist ". Consider yourself a "crochet therapist " not a hoarder. You and I could have worse addictions and we aren't hurting anyone. It's all good.

And as you continued to shop and look at more yarn I felt so sad for you. I was truely depressed over your situation for two days. You were on my mind for two days. Thank you very much for your video. I also struggle with the yarn I have. It's about 1/3 of what you have, but my struggle is will I ever use it. Watching your video makes me feel much better about my stash. I am slowly going from how you have organized and organize them into the next project with pattern, hook, etc. I use any bag that I can get my hands on so that all I have to do is grab and start the pattern.

I was listening to you talk about taking photos, collecting plants, etc I have been exactly the same! I have thought it was because I don't have kids & was trying to fill that void as everything I collect requires looking after mostly! But yes, I have felt like I'm drowning in some things as I've not organised it ... And yes, I love organising & I love looking at what I deem are pretty things - yarn! You are really helping me with going through your thought process, etc

Ginger, I love your sweet spirit and I just want to ask you, are you unable to give away your yarn? As in it is too upsetting for you to donate/ sell it? I've seen cinnamon stitches or Juan do mystery boxes to get rid of yarn they don't love? You are being very brave to share with us, I'm praying you are taking care of you.
Thank you for helping me feel normal. I’m such a yarn hoarder with no desire to recover. Yarn and more yarn makes me happy. And creating from my personal hoard is uplifting. Invigorating. Only a fellow yarn hoarder/collector may understand. You are definitely my friend in my head. Please tell me about those huge crochet bags with yarn inside. I’ve made smaller ones but none that size - which is a good idea.
I am your one person! I'm also a lover of yarn, and mostly collect fingering weight sock yarn. My favorite things to make are socks and scrappy blankets. I am going to take your advice and work through my stash rather than purchase more. We will see. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together!
You are not a yarn hoarder! …..yarn is your business … you are a pattern tester and you are making a lot with your loved yarn…. You really don’t need to sell or give your yarn away or feel any guilt.…..when you get yarn from your Mom you will deal with it. I love your channel , stay the way you are 🥰🌈🍄🐝🩷

I am half jealous and half oh-my-god-who-needs-that-much-yarn! Of course, if I had the money forthat much yarn, I'd have enough money for that, I'd put it towards food, and some savings so I'm not worried about food and money at the end of every month.
Wow, I learned to let it go, donated bags of acrylic yarn to volunteer group in the Bronx, NY to use for children’s clothes and gifts. I no longer buy ‘on sale’ acrylic yarn as I most likely will not use it. I am now working down my indie dyed yarn and wools. What a great feeling!
I would have to say hoarder - yes. An intervention may be in order Or perhaps open your own store! LOL

I get it. It's hard. I have too much yarn as well. I see a video of something I like and get the yarn to make it. I just work a lot and don't have time to make it. It's like I'm buying it for "someday." I also like to organize. I say I shouldn't buy anymore yarn and then I find a good sale or something new comes out. I realize some of my favorite yarn is going to be discontinued so I buy more. I keep it organized, but I don't have room for much else. I'm just not going to Joann's or Hobby Lobby anymore. I can't. I just have to spend my time actually crocheting.

Some of my yarn I have, I bought when pregnant with my youngest child. That was 46 years ago😮 I keep them in clear plastic storage bags on shelves. I have thinned them out some? I will not be able to use it all before I die. None of my 3 daughters sew or do yarn work. So, I better get busy😅
I think you qualify as a hoarder. However, I don’t necessarily think that’s an awful thing. You’ve got it sorted and organized and are actually using a lot of yarn every month. However, I do think you should try very hard to finish your current WIPs before you buy any more yarn and then not buy more yarn until you pare down your vast stash (or at least go to “low buy”). Once it all fits onto shelves (rather than stacked on the floor), then I think you’ve moved into “stash” and opposed to “hoard” territory. On the other hand, as long as it gives you more joy than anxiety, you do you boo!

Hi Ginger, I, too, am a yarn lover who buys or collects a lot of yarn. I not an organized person. So, I am so overwhelmed by my yarn stash. I try but often fail at not buying yarn. Because I love the possibilities of what it can become. Pray for me, Ginger. I love your organized yarn room.
I collect yarn too. I like to look at it and have options when i want to start a new project. I don’t have access to yarn stores, or at least Hobby Lobby and a small Joann is like a 2 hour drive one way. No local yarn store for hundreds of miles. Anyway, yarn brings me immense joy and it’s about the only thing i spend money on. Your mom’s shelves are awesome. 😊
Have you ever thought about barcoding the yarn and your shelves? That is how a library keep track of all those books, and what you have is basically a library of yarn.

im currently inventorying every single skein of yarn i have and I find it incredibly overwhelming. And i have a small fraction of the amount of yarn that you have. I cannot imagine trying to organize all that yarn. Kudos for taking on such a massive project!
So Ikea... I just bought one of their shelving systems that is a bunch of cubby holes. I also bought the matching doors. I sorted all my fabric/yarn stash into the cubbies and labeled the doors. We are talking floor to ceiling cubbies ya'all!!!! I can see my floor!!!!! I don't have to embrace my inner acrobat to get to my sewing machine haha!!! Love Ikea!!!!

I have fallen short on having enough yarn to finish a project. It is I LOVE THIS YARN, 100% acrylic, color way 742/SANDY GRAY. The dye lot will probably not be an issue. I feel the same about my stash as you do about yours, LOVE everything I have ever bought and have plans. Now, I must start using what I love. I have been thinking that a lot lately, that I really just want to do these projects I have been planning. The only thing stopping me is ME. You could start an organizing business helping people tidy their homes. Or invite some homeless people around and teach them to crochet a warm blanket for themselves. Let them choose yarn from your stash. I have a cupboard of yarn and a few totes and my son called me insane! He hasn't spoken to me in years 😢
Envy overload. You ladies must be rich . Those of us on a budget save to buy just 4 skeins. I don’t want to be jealous but I am soooo jealous.
Sometimes limitations are good. It's all about finding a good balance. I have a large stash I've been moving around so I'm not jealous at all. I know the struggle of hauling and maintaining everything lol

I have always liked having my things nicely organized, and growing up not having much and as an adult being able to get things I couldn’t when I was growing up, I’ve noticed I’ve also have become a collector ( or hoarder depending on who you ask 😂) and I have been thinking it’s because of the fact that when I was younger I was not able to have the things I wanted.
Like when I was in my late teens and my 20’s and 30’s i started getting my cosmopolitan magazines in stores and eventually subscribed to it and I’ve collected pretty much most of them ( my husband is dying to throw them away) 😂 it gave me such a wonderful feeling receiving them and reading them (I have read them all mostly from front to back) because I thought it was such a cool sophisticated thing , to receive your magazine in the mail and reading it on the train or at home with a cup of tea or coffee.
Anyway now I collect yarn 🧶 I am absolutely obsessed with my yarn and crochet ( even though I don’t get to crochet as much as I’d like to right now while I’m getting my house organized) yarn 🧶 gives me a sense of security and peace and joy! I may not need anymore yarn 🧶 but they come out with so much pretty new yarn that I have to get it or I get severe FOMi . 😂
I say get your yarn , we are not hurting anyone by buying excessive amounts of yarn 😂 there are worse things we could be doing!

I think you may have the biggest yarn collection I have ever seen and I love that for you!! That room full of future beauty is not hoarding. You saw something in every single ball, cake, skein, whatever. It is actually what I plan to do. Right now, I got plastic totes that hold my yarn and can't wait to have to do what you are doing in this video. I just had a question though..you have those big colorful cakes in the little room where the window is...what brand are those and where can I get them?

And everyone thought I had a LOT of yarn until I showed them a picture of your room!! Yarn is pretty; it's like you're an artist thinking of pictures you can paint! I love to do adult coloring, therefore I have hundreds of markers!! Same with embroidery. I could embroider around the world!! lol Six months ago I pulled myself up short and said, That's It!! Use what you have...I've given away lots, made lots of things for people (selling them too!). I'd love to see all the things you can do with what you have!! You'd never have to buy another skein of yarn!! You are to be commended on your attitude and progress.
WHY do you sound like me? Hoping your sorting and organizing will inspire me to get moving on my yarn stash - and also my other “hobbies”. I love when Joann's and Hobby Lobby have sales, but Hobby Lobbys clearance sales ??? I did great this yr and only bought 4 skeins of yarn, but in all honesty, it was only because I missed the sale and that was all that was left. My yarn only gets disorganized when I grab an assortment trying to find which yarn I want to use for a certain project, this usually goes on til the basket I discard them in is full only then do I put them away.
OMG that’s more than I ever seen in one crochet room. I have allot but now only buy as I need it for a project in which slowed me down from buying. My thought is to make some mistery boxes of yarn and sell them or do a giveaway just the yarn you not going to use.
Get a knitting machine? I used up some older stuff that way. You can get ones for socks or hats.
Omgoodness 😮…. I see myself…. I’m not this bad but I’m on the way…. I justify it by saying I don’t do drugs or drink alcohol…. I make things with my yarn to make others Happy ….. maybe that’s why I buy the yarn I see possibilities lol 😂…. I know I’m a yarnholic
As hoards go it’s not a bad thing. I’m also a collector of possibilities. Although I tend to change my hyper fixation. Trying very hard to organise. As you say starting by doing anything is better than doing nothing. Love watching your content.

Since you used to collect photos as well, would you like to make a video about the things you have made all that years. It has not to be necessarily about all of them but it would be great to show off some of them and get inspired by them.
Your stash is on steroids. You are not a hoarder as everything is trying to have a space. But has it occurred to you that you do not need all this yarn. You will never be able to knit it all in your life time . I love shopping for yarn for the next project it sparks joy knowing I have enough to actually make what I have in mind .

I love yarn. I used to feel guilty about buying yarn. Not anymore, I buy yarn because I like the way it looks, smells, and feels. If I work hard and this is my one addiction I deserve to spend my money on what I like. I don’t spend beyond my needs and I buy 1-3 skeins,if there’s no room, I make room before I buy more, I also don’t invade someone else’s space. Just a few rules for myself. I’m happy with my system.

Keep up the good work. What happened to the organized grand daughter that was going to help you. Seeing your mother's room I can see that yarn hoarding must be somewhat genetic. My husband claims that my idea of organizing is to move one pile of stuff to another shelf! I only have 92 full skeins of yarn! Are you keeping an inventory list of what kind of yarns you currently have?
