Thanks! Your thermal detonator/adhesive grenade combination is intriguing. My original plan was to use thermal detonators the whole way through, but I ended up switching to plasmas when they proved themselves to be so darn practical. However, I was prepared to revert back to an older save and switch to thermal detonators if necessary. The problem with thermal detonators is it's very difficult to mitigate their damage; since I never ended up needing them, I never ended up testing them all that much. I knew they can be an excellent tool against Malak since the saving throw doesn't prevent the knockback (I think we can thank the movies for that). But like all grenades, the saving throw only halves the damage, and since, at my level, I can't even make the saving throw--I'm taking all 60 damage every time. I know from the speedrun that you can bring your entire party into the Malak fight and stunlock Malak to death with thermal detonators. So, if it came down to it, and I had no other options, I would have just done that. But I don't actually know if you can stunlock an enemy with only one person throwing grenades. I believe I mentioned in the video how I was scared to duplicate my inventory too many times for fear of crashing my game. Well, that meant that I never actually bothered to duplicate thermal detonators; I didn't have access to them before I started duping. But I knew that if worse came to worse, I could reload from the start of the Star Forge and use the Ebon Hawk for one final dupe session. That being said, when I finally got to Malak, I managed to find a different way of defeating him. Actually, if I'm honest, I found two. The first time I defeated Malak I used the ol' AMG to skip Malak's many, many health bars (honestly don't remember if this was in the video). But knowing how anti-climactic that was, I decided to try a more head-on approach. And by 'head-on' I do mean cowardly. And to me, that ending was much more interesting than just doing what the speedrun does, so that's what I settled on. But. All that being said, I agree that saying, "grenades aren't useful against melee opponents" was very irresponsible of me. It was a narrative decision that I made to avoid going off on another tangent about how little health I have to work with. I should have said, "grenades aren't the best option against melee opponents, in this very specific circumstance, which very well might change later in the run". Oh, and thanks again Carth..
Hilarious how Malak was defeated similarly to how I defeated him on my first playthrough back in March. After he drained the first Jedi I couldn't hit him so I resorted to spamming Thermal Detonator's and menu healing. Got the job done soon enough. I had a seperate save file on the temple so I could do the Dark Side ending, and thankfully I still had two levels to spare after until I reached max level so I invested in Valor and was finale able to hit him. Also found the Star Forge robes that time. Well done on the playthrough. Taking the Kotor challenges to the next level, (Hehe) beating Kotor without taking damage, now that would be a difficult challenge indeed.
@@vhoulagreed, for similar reasons to why Fable 1 no damage isn't hard. Energy shields and then force powers give you pretty substantial damage reduction (that can take damage to 0) and you get some really obnoxious control effects later to just block people from attacking at all. Still could be interesting...other than the frustration of reloading for any ambush fights that don't give you a good opportunity to put up shields and get lucky.
Gotta admit I love the KotoR content you made. Not just because I played them too many times (but that's definitely why I clicked on the thumbnail) but because I really enjoy content like this. Well deserved sub. Hope you continue making videos like this
This is a really well crafted video with significant thought being put into structure and editing. It’s a shame the view count doesn’t reflect that. It feels like some parts were skipped or shortened due to concern over viewers’ attention span. Keep it up if you actually enjoy doing it.
Thanks, I do. And it's less about attention span, and more about 'there's only so many ways to say you laid down mines and threw grenades until the enemies died', but if your point was that you'd like to see more, me too. ;)
The Sith Governor is like "Stop... interrup-....ting me" I got my mine on my money and my money on my mine. Shark bait hoo ha ha! They're waiting for you inside.
When i was teen, on my 2nd run in Kotor, i havent lvled up until a possibility of becoming a jedi cas 13 jedi lvl is not as cool as 18. And it was a little bit pain in da ass. Im watching 3rd minute of this video, and i cannot imagine the size of pain and suffering u get, filming it. Grate job!
Amazing video! I'm about to go watch your kotor 2 without leveling video now too. One minor thing that caught my attention, and I could be completely wrong on this because *sometimes* kotor does it's rules a little bit differently from 3rd edition D&D, which the game is based upon, but I believe that the Attack/Defense rules for kotor are the same as 3e D&D. Which is to say that your explanation of it is correct, so for the addition that if your attack roll is better than *or* equal to the targets defense, then you hit. Anything below it is a miss. And looks like somebody else already brought up the Juhani thing, but I made the same mistake as you did when I played this game many times as a kid thinking the only way to recruit her was to have points in persuasion, but nope, just picking the correct dialogue options skips the need for persuasion. The persuasion checks are basically just there as a "Skip the 'verbal boss battle'" button. Anyway, fantastic work! Would honestly love to see more kotor content from you, your way of showcasing the game is very entertaining!
While I am not opposed to more KotOR content, I am currently... sick of the game, having spent several months thinking of nothing else. That being said, the game holds a special place in my heart, and I don't think I'll ever be done with it. I am currently working on other projects involving other games. And while I won't disclose what those games are, or what mischievous things I'm doing to them, I can say that I try to present all of my games with the same sense of passion. I hope you enjoy KotOR 2. Although that video is not as good as this one, we do get up to some crazy shenanigans.
Besides Taris, I'm not sure there's much more to be uncovered. But if you're hell-bent on more KotOR content, there is always my KotOR 2 video of the same challenge, if for some reason UA-cam hasn't suggested it to you already. Thanks, I appreciate your interest.
The "instantly kill an incapacitated enemy under level 5 with a melee attack" thing is an actual mechanic; this is known as a Death Blow. You've probably done it against kath hounds with Stun/Fear, or had it done to you with a Vulkar Stun Stick.
and I thought fighting Bendact Starkiller at level 2 was hard, I felt the pain before I even clicked on the video my god the suffering you went through 🫂 Great video btw I love watching KOTOR Related content

Around 19:30 with the temple droids, if you are able to activate both terminals the droids will automatically self destruct. It helps that the droids take a second to activate when you enter a room so you can quickly run over. If you get incapacitated before getting to the other room you just use another party member for the last one. (Just make sure you solo mode so they stay in the center.)
Yep, that's what I did. But since the first droid hit me with it's carbonite projector, I decided to just kill it. I believe I purposely left in the experience drop from the second droid, but didn't find the time to mention this mechanic.
The secret to winning no matter how poorly you build your character is save your levels for the tough fights. Each time you level up, your everything gets restored. So when fighting Malak, I just hoarded my levels and used them each time I got close to death.
"I am going to say a pivotal plot point!" - still better writing than Disney Star Wars. I am btw subscriber 410, as you had 409 the moment I hit subscribe.
Yep, they're also vulnerable to running past. When you activate both terminals and open the Star Map room door, the game will automatically kill them both. This is what I was attempting to do, but got caught. If you were paying close enough attention you might have seen the XP drop I got for the second droid even though I never killed it.
0:45 didn’t know what flu meant and when I looked it up and it was weirdly hard to find online so I’m putting it here in case anyone else was struggling the same way. I could be wrong but it seems like flu is short for false loading, which basically means passing through any game section by using tricks and/or glitches rather than methods the game intends to allow
FLU stands for Fake Level Up or Fake Level Up Glitch. If you'd like more information on it, go to speedrun.com and search for KotOR. There you should be able to find your way to the section on the FLU. (btw I just checked and speedrun.com now links to a dedicated website for KotOR speedrun guides)
I remember trying this when playing on X-box a few years back but it always froze when I got off the Ebon Hawk on Dantooine as Carth started talking to me. The game would glitch out abruptly and crash. I finally gave up and leveled up and that resolved it.
I really wanted to see you take on the Leviathan! I think the best way to handle no leveling when you get your prestige Jedi class is to use the same cross class glitch I always use to turn my NPC allies into Jedi as well. The cross class glitch. When the game forces you to level up, if you press start or pause fast enough after the dialogue window closes, you can switch characters and they will be forced into a level up. That way you never level your main character and you can do it with someone like T3, who you will never use again for the rest of the playthrough anyway.
I really wanted to see how I was going to manage the Leviathan too... As for your cross class glitch idea, it sounds against the rules. It's not that I'm not allowed to use characters after they level up--it's that I can't level up anyone: in any way, shape, or form.. ever, under any circumstances. I'm pretty sure, and I was pretty sure at the time, that I could've reloaded an old save to redo Dantooine in a way that doesn't break Carth AND allows me to avoid the level up, but I was already very far into the run at that point, and I didn't want to redo all of my hard work (I don't remember if I mentioned this in the video or not). Managing all the different saves I had at that point was already a nightmare, and adding a second set didn't seem worth it given the possibility I might not be able to complete the Leviathan anyway. And I did try to beat the Leviathan after the fact. It's really hard.
I'll try. But just so were on the same page, do you mean KotOR videos, or videos in general? Because I can't guarantee I'll be making any more KotOR videos any time soon, but I can promise you that I just released a new video, and it's worth watching.
@@harryst999 Well I'm taking a bit of a break from BioWare games for now, but I'll keep it in mind. Finding the right idea to best show off a game takes time.
i wasnt fully paying attention in the intro cuz i was heating up my food. so i caught rule number three and not number four, and came back to the DLZ lmaooo i had to rewind like wtf did i miss?
I typically come to these challenges with a lot of research and prior game knowledge; if I knew it was going to be impossible, the challenge would never have seen the light of day. I honestly don't know if I would have continued. It would likely depend on if I thought the run was still interesting. There are plenty of great challenges just waiting to be discovered, and I'd rather be enjoying the good ones rather than trying to salvage the bad ones.
Does unarmed include mines? Because I'm really good with mines. But in all seriousness, I've thought about it.. it might be a little one-dimensional for my tastes. I like challenges that force innovation and strategy, which is tricky when the challenge forces you to punch everything to death. Would have to look into it further though.
@@vhoul I'm currently doing an unarmed run myself and it's surprisingly difficult. Not only do you do hardly any damage unless you mega pump your strength up (my Jedi companions are doing 2-2 damage because they start with a bunch of Dexterity lol) but it's made even trivial fights capable of a wipe. For example, I just got off Dantooine and went to Tatooine first and the first group of Sand People nearly took us out 😅. You could maybe combine it if you're really mad, like an unarmored unarmed run. I think it'd be fun to see you try it.
I'm pretty sure it's Survive the Montage by RKVC. I try to source any and all resources in the description. I think I even put the main font I used in there. (I know, none of us are used to anyone putting effort into their descriptions anymore, but mine are still handwritten.)
Sure, the game is much, much easier if you play it as intended. Other than that, learn the basics of combat, read all of the abilities, and never use auto level up. Each party member should choose a weapon type (blasters, vibroblades, lightsabers, etc.) and stick to it. Then, along with that weapon type you should only choose one attack style (critical strike, flurry, rapid shot, etc.). Bear in mind that every party member, including the main character, may start the game having already gone done one of these paths. That's fine, the start of the game is the right time to switch. Save often and use multiple save files. I tend to make a new save file for each planet just in case something goes horribly wrong. If you keep dying to a particular group of enemies: use medpacs, stims, and energy shields. Shields let you tank more damage, which is great if you're getting one-shot. Stims boost your stats, which can help hit enemies more consistently, get his less, and take more damage. And medpacs are best for keeping all of your party members alive. Just make sure you're using the right tools for the job. The wrong type of shield might not block any damage, the wrong stim won't help certain character builds, and using medpacs in a losing fight only prolongs the inevitable. Never be afraid to pause the game during a difficult encounter; this is a necessary step to using your whole party effectively. The AI loves to queue up basic attacks, but you want to be using your abilities as much as possible. You should also figure out the role that each party member is playing. Some party members are really good at tanking, and others are really good at dying. If you notice this happening, pull back your weaker party members and let the enemies switch aggression to the stronger ones. Positioning is very important. If your party is grouped up, you are much more vulnerable to grenades, but you can also focus your damage much better. Additionally, you have a much better chance to hit an enemy if you are behind them. If you're fighting a boss and you just can't seem to hit them, try having your tankiest character fight them head on, while your other party members walk around them and attack them from behind. The boss might turn around and attack them, but you can just run off and let them re-aggro until they give up and let you wail on their back. I think you might even be able to see me employ this strategy against Darth Bandon on my first few attempts (before I started using grenades). Perhaps one final thing to keep in mind is gear. For armour, keep an eye on the Defence and Max Dexterity Bonus. Your defence is equal to your armour's defence plus your dexterity bonus. You can see your dexterity bonus on your stats page. It might say something like 10 + 0, 14 + 2, or 19 +4. You want to have as much defence as possible without hurting your dexterity bonus. For example, if a character has 19 dexterity, they will have a +4 dexterity bonus, so they should wear the best armour you have with at least 4 max dexterity bonus. Unless of course that character doesn't use dexterity to deal damage... There's a lot more I could explain, but I think that's a good starting point. Don't hesitate to reach out if you want to know more, or would like some clarification. I'd also be more than happy to jump into a call where I could explain things better. Unless of course by "try it for myself" you meant try KotOR without leveling.... In which case, don't.
you didn't need to spend 10 minutes on juhani, she can be talked down without using persuade options

Thanks, now if I can just get more people to binge watch KotOR speedruns. ;)
They're waiting for you inside.
Mr. Vhoul you have a rutabaga authenticity I have not seen in any youtuber for a day and an age - I wish you a hearty success!
One of the best video's I have watched on UA-cam in a while!
What a weird coincidence, and you're not going to believe this, but it's one of the best videos I've made on UA-cam in a while. ;)
obligatory engagement comment, this is dope.
Great work, man. Really entertaining. Like a 'calmer' ymfah 😂 Keep it up, u got my sub
No damage, eh? I don't think it would be as hard as you might think.
Amazing video. Honestly it deserves way more views!
"So, you're the Hidden Beks, yes?"
Gadon: "Yes. No, we're not very well hidden, and nobody here is called Bek."
This is exactly what I look for in challenge runs. The edits, the humor, and the creativity is just *chefs kiss*
The editing on this is hilarious I wish more people knew about this game😂
abosulutely loved this video man
All the cut aways to the crew and others voice clips was hilarious 😂
One of the best and most timless games ever made. Great star wars always withstands the test of time
...and bad Star Wars is forgotten almost immediately. ;)
@@vhoul idk about that, the holiday special is pretty terrible, and that's definitely not forgotten
Seems I’m late to the scene but I’m so glad there is KOTOR speedruns/challenge run content
Gotta admit I love the KotoR content you made. Not just because I played them too many times (but that's definitely why I clicked on the thumbnail) but because I really enjoy content like this. Well deserved sub. Hope you continue making videos like this
this just popped up in my recommended and i've gotta say the editing is top notch. using the character lines to react to you is such a good bit
Underrated dialogue edit at 9:34
:D

So just happened across this content. Loved the vid and about to start watching KOTOR2 run. Keep up the good work mate.
Grate job!
An awesome vid, thanks for making it ^^ Even though I'm more of a KOTOR2 fan, the first game also deserves some love
This 48 minute video was worth every single second of my time

3:49 I have no idea what he was saying, so I have to rewatch this part a couple times...
In KotOR2, when HK talks about using land mines on Jedi, he says so after attempting this challenge, I'm sure of it.
subbed - you gotta do more game challenge videos mate, top tier entertainment
Fantastic video! Id love to see a part two where you tackle all of the side quests, as well
Besides Taris, I'm not sure there's much more to be uncovered.
Yea, I've definitely been on the receiving end a few times. But it's just such a ridiculous mechanic, and the game never explains it to you.
and I thought fighting Bendact Starkiller at level 2 was hard, I felt the pain before I even clicked on the video my god the suffering you went through 🫂 Great video btw I love watching KOTOR Related content
My past Halo 2 no lifeing teenager self appreciates the plasma grenade spam strat.
You need more subscribers! Top content as always 👏 keep going and maybe soon you will be blessed by the Mythical Algorithm ✨
You are a shining example of how to be a great UA-camr, Vhoul. No clickbait whatsoever in your titles or thumbnails and yet getting lots of views that you very much deserve. Well done!
Thanks, this means a lot.
Was hoping for this since the Kotor II version, great video
Sucks that a video this well made has less than 10k views man, i wish you a lot more success because this is probably the best kotor 1 vid ive seen so far
I was perfectly satisfied at 1:29 tbh :D
Me too. ;)
The malak fight is glorious. Haven't laughed this hard in a while
This is a gem, i wish i had found it earlier!
The ending montage almost brought a tear to my eye
I love the editing haha "you ungrateful little shit!" nice touch
Around 19:30 with the temple droids, if you are able to activate both terminals the droids will automatically self destruct.
It helps that the droids take a second to activate when you enter a room so you can quickly run over. If you get incapacitated before getting to the other room you just use another party member for the last one. (Just make sure you solo mode so they stay in the center.)
Yep, that's what I did. But since the first droid hit me with it's carbonite projector, I decided to just kill it. I believe I purposely left in the experience drop from the second droid, but didn't find the time to mention this mechanic.
44:30 ah yes, the brown perineum.
I love the video and the editing, good work !
Oh good, I wasn't sure people we're going to notice that line. :)
@@vhoul I am very observant, I noticed all those little line edits you made. Good stuff.
For the droids in the Dantooine Star Map, they’re vulnerable to vibroblades or any non-lightsaber melee weapon. Just a tip that I found.
Yep, they're also vulnerable to running past. When you activate both terminals and open the Star Map room door, the game will automatically kill them both. This is what I was attempting to do, but got caught. If you were paying close enough attention you might have seen the XP drop I got for the second droid even though I never killed it.
lol, You can pick right dialog to get Bastila to turn on Malek and return to the light side
Amazing video and editing for sure
0:45 didn’t know what flu meant and when I looked it up and it was weirdly hard to find online so I’m putting it here in case anyone else was struggling the same way. I could be wrong but it seems like flu is short for false loading, which basically means passing through any game section by using tricks and/or glitches rather than methods the game intends to allow
Literally paused at the word flu so I didn’t realize it seems like he contradicts this in rule 3, so idk
Thank you to John cena for showing me if it’s possible to beat this game without leveling up while I fall asleep.
Loved the edits, nice work!
I remember trying this when playing on X-box a few years back but it always froze when I got off the Ebon Hawk on Dantooine as Carth started talking to me. The game would glitch out abruptly and crash. I finally gave up and leveled up and that resolved it.
Those darn consoles.. always gotta ruin everything.
Amazing video! Love KOTOR
I think you can just convince juhani through regular dialog if I remember correctly
Yep, see pinned comment for my retraction. :)
It's really hard.
awesome video man
is walking into the debris on the spire to advance without opening the door not a glitch? hahaha
Did not expect KotOr gachimuchi 30 minutes in 🤣
dying was a happy accident is going on my tombstone
The leviathan, Saul karath's ship...
Yes, thank you Carth...
I'm not gonna lie, I've never played Kotor as a female char, and uh, yeah I think I should after watching this vid
Looking for a woman's perspective, eh? That's very progressive of you..
Please keep making these
I'll try. But just so were on the same page, do you mean KotOR videos, or videos in general? Because I can't guarantee I'll be making any more KotOR videos any time soon, but I can promise you that I just released a new video, and it's worth watching.
@@vhoul i’m good with any type of content. Mass Effect could be a nice one to pop into the pipeline 👀
@@harryst999 Well I'm taking a bit of a break from BioWare games for now, but I'll keep it in mind. Finding the right idea to best show off a game takes time.
I half expected you to use the thingy that turns malek into a dancing girl.

i wasnt fully paying attention in the intro cuz i was heating up my food. so i caught rule number three and not number four, and came back to the DLZ lmaooo i had to rewind like wtf did i miss?
rule 4.. it's a very important rule. :D
Never leveled up on taris or on the ship, wanted to get as many force powers as possible
good video brother!
Wierd thing is, that's exactly how I beat Malak as I kid.... I layed mines.
Solid play through and video
I do appreciate that you consider the jedi class a level up. Would you have continued if you couldn't bypass it? Like minimum level ups?
I typically come to these challenges with a lot of research and prior game knowledge; if I knew it was going to be impossible, the challenge would never have seen the light of day.
I honestly don't know if I would have continued. It would likely depend on if I thought the run was still interesting. There are plenty of great challenges just waiting to be discovered, and I'd rather be enjoying the good ones rather than trying to salvage the bad ones.
Hey, have you considered an unarmed challenge run? Maybe even an unarmed no force powers run? I would love to see how you handle that
Does unarmed include mines?
Fantastic video. I may have to have a go at this myself. What was the music during the mine laying montage? It was really catchy
I'm pretty sure it's Survive the Montage by RKVC. I try to source any and all resources in the description. I think I even put the main font I used in there. (I know, none of us are used to anyone putting effort into their descriptions anymore, but mine are still handwritten.)
This game scares me 2 much to try it for myself. Any advice?
