Today, Apple has the largest and most diverse product ecosystem in history. From smartphones to tablets to smart watches, we’ve never seen Apple compete in so many industries simultaneously. But with all these new products, it’s easy to forget that Apple started as a computer company. And their Macintosh operating system, also known as macOS, has been around since 1984. So in this video, we’re going to explore the history of macOS, and find out how it’s grown and evolved over the past four decades. - Наука та технологія
I’m a Windows user, but the fact that Apple users were resilient enough to start a grassroots movement to keep the company alive by buying the technologies is beyond admirable.
at that point of time mac ox was a very good product and usually was a little ahead of it's time. I'm pretty sure it was much more home pc user friendly than windows.
And the fact some pirates up and REFUSED to redistribute it is actually so admirable.

I use all three... including chromeOS if you consider that (because of school) 🤣 but yeah.. I personally like the simplicity and privacy of MacOS, the privacy of Linux and the fact that it’s so niche and has a nice community, and I like windows for straightfoward more complex operations and gaming
The oldest MacOS I have ever used was Tiger on a G3 iMac.
Great video, I really liked the Snow Leopard.
Its been 11 years...
i absolutely love Apple’s OS.
What about lion
@@jadinhtvt6870 Lion came out after Snow Leopard. Im not sure but i think that was in 2011. The first OS version which was only available from the AppStore.
I don't remember too much as it was a long time ago. I think the auto save was introduced in Lion, but I'm not entirely sure.
That was a great feature. I think Craig Federighi had some `windows` jokes with his shaking hand on the magic mouse. I think that was the WWDS in 2011 when he was super nervous. :)
@@jadinhtvt6870 I had Lion running on the first Mac Pro, and that was an unhappy mariage. Very, very unstable, but I can't tell if it was the OS or the chimera hardware (both 32 and 64 bit parts).
Luckily, it was just used as a guest PC for my summer guests and for watching DVDs on a larger screen than my 13'' MBP. (I've never had a TV).
As a courtesy I installed Google Chrome for one of the guest who was used to that interface. Took the whole machine down so hard I had to re-format the harddrive and re-install Lion after trying every trick in the book to recover. No chance.
the oldest i think i used was el capitan, i still am on el capitan
I feel so decrepit.. the oldest Mac OS I used was System 7, for donkey's years as a kid. Boy-howdy, was 8 ever good after that ordeal.

This was a massive nostalgia trip for me.
Technically been using Macs since System 6.0 on my parents’ Macintosh SE. However I bought my first Mac in 2005, an iBook G4 running OS X Tiger. I bought it for £600, though had I bought Apple stock instead, it would be worth £53,734 today.

God, I miss Snow Leopard.
@@jacobbeauchamp7465 I still run SnowLeo on my good old MBP Mid 2010. As a matter of fact, I am writing this comment in Firefox on that MBP running SnowLeo.
I only had to re-install SnowLeo once, namely when the original harddrive went bust and I replaced it with an SSD. I just managed to create a complete TimeMachine backup before the harddrive died entirely, but since I had installed a completely new disk, I chose to re-install SnowLeo and additional software from scratch, rather than just copying it back, except for my personal documents.
This happened six years ago, and the MBP still runs on that installation several hours every day. However, SnowLeo slowly loses its ability to handle the evermore complicated internet. I still get by by the tip of my fingernails, but very soon I will have to get a somewhat larger SSD, partition it, run a newer OS X for daily use and SnowLeo occasionally for older things like AppleWorks and a few old favorite games.
But I will bitterly be missing my ventilator fan control that shows tempearture and RPMs in the menu bar and also MenuMeters that show upload- and download speeds in the menu bar. They don't run on (quite) newer systems becuase Apple's fees for Kext-signing certificates are way too high for the developers.

In 1994, I was brought into a room full of the original Macintoshes. I sat down and without any instruction, I began using it and the applications. Prior to this, I'd never used a mouse before, but it was all so intuitive. Eighteen years later, I switched from Windows to Mac (Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion) and it felt so familiar and intuitive. It's amazing how far macOS has evolved since 2012 and how relevant it is still is, despite the emergence of mobile devices like iPhone and iPad. So far, they've come very close to the PC experience, but have just fallen short.

Wow. What a trip down memory lane for me. Though, I really stopped using Mac OS X full time after Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) was released. And you are correct --Snow Leopard was an AWESOME OS. It was rock stable, fast, and the workspaces were a highly useable grid (rather than the linear layout introduced with Lion). I was super productive in Snow Leopard. But after Lion eliminated or changed the way I was used to working, I went ahead and ended up loading Windows 7 on my primary Mac at the time and got back to work. These days, I find Ubuntu Mate to be a great coding working environment, but still live in Windows 10 about a 25-30% of the time as well. I used Macs from the late 1980s till Lion drove me away. Thanks for the nostalgia!

What an incredible stroll down memory lane. I've been a Mac user since 1992 with the Mac Plus running System 6 in the graphics lab of Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology in Sudbury, Ontario, where I was taking graphic design. I just purchased a new MacBook Pro 14" running Sonoma, my first non-refurbished Mac since the purchase of a new PowerMac G4 back in 2000. It's nice to see where features were introduced and came of age over the past 30+ years.
Thank you so much for your videos as always you do an excellent job 😃😃
It's amazing to see how far MacOS went. But a request Greg, a chatter about iphone 12 pleaseeeeeeeeee
3:50 You forgot to mention System 4.2/Finder 6.0, which was the first version to support MultiFinder. This let you use all the extra RAM to run multiple applications at once. This may have derived from a project Andy Hertzfeld had been working on in his own time, called “Servant”. This was an advance on his earlier (and very popular) “Switcher” offering in letting windows from different apps coexisting on the same screen, instead of just one app at a time taking over the whole screen.
There was a lot that wasn't mentioned from the pre OS X days that I feel should have been included in a video titled "History of macOS"
Oldest MacOS I used was OSX Mavericks. I have a strong nostalgia for it as my mum’s 2014 MacBook Air ran it before I inherited it and installed Catalina. The skeuomorphism just hits me hard
5:51 MacOS 8.5 was the one that added the theming engine, and some alternative themes were made available in the betas. These were all dropped before final release, but they did still work if you installed them.
Also 1994 saw the introduction of the first Power Macs, with a special (interim) System version 7.1.2 to support them.
That segue into the ad was the smoothest thing. Didn’t see that coming!
I appreciate your efforts.
Man, Leopard is still my favorite version of MacOS to this day.
Did you know that Safari was based on a Linux based browser called Konqeror?? I read it in a book by a former Apple software developer. It was actually really interesting because macOS is based on BSD, an old Unix based system. Linux is also based on the philosophy of Unix. I think that is really cool. Yes snow leopard was awesome
4:02 Those are disks for System 7.5, from about a decade later.
Yep. Plus It's funny that 7.5 was shown because that was an awefully buggy version of Mac OS. Luckily, they fixed it all up in 7.6.1 and that was solid until Mac OS 8 shipped.
Boy what a trip from my youth to today.... I joined in the party in the mid 90's with a Performa 6200 running System 7.5 (I think). Thanks for this!
You and me both. First computer I ever had was a Performa 6290CD with System 7.5.1 just like you.
I started with system 7.5 on a Performa 550. My next Mac was my favorite computer running my favorite OS - a 12” G4 PowerBook running 10.4 Tiger. I no longer have it, but I still have a working iMac G4 running it!
Wow, this OS history was like a history of my professional computing life.
Absolutely love your channel man and you put out some amazing content. As a regular watcher/subscriber can I respectfully request that background music going forward is either something different occasionally and/or forgone altogether? This track is just getting old imo and it's often too loud.
Wow great review
I jumped on the Mac bandwagon back in 2003 and am still on it. My first Mac was an iBook, it was a nice little machine until the display died after about a year. Undeterred, I got one of the first aluminum unibody MacBooks in 2008. Really enjoyed that computer. Wish I still had it, made the mistake of selling it to buy a gaming rig. Should have held onto it, it probably would still work like a champ.

After that version, you needed a Mac with an Intel Core processor.

The first true graphical OS I ever used was System 2, as a child, and my parents and grandparents were dedicated Macintosh users due to using them at work, so I grew up with Mac operating systems until I moved over to Windows around System 6. This was a treat for me to watch, to see all the old ecosystems that I cut my teeth on. Makes me want to buy an old Mac just for the experience of using it again.
What's the background music?
4:49 Before System 7, there was quite a lot of work happening in the 6.0.x series. For example, 6.0.7 backported the Mac II Sound Manager API to lesser Mac models. Also TrueType was made available as a drop-in extension for ≥6.0.5 users who couldn’t upgrade to 7.0.
Thank you for these videos! Two things: Pronunciations for SCSI - Skuz-ee and GUI - Goo-ee
MAN! those were the days. I remember lining up outside local Mac dealer to buy OS8 and OS9. I also got OS X Public Beta software. Yes, early versions of OSX were brutally slow. Wish I held on to them just for keepsakes. Always loved simple 2d GUI of System 7. It would be could cool if they brought back some looks in future version of MacOS.
Did you recognize the "Hello" font from last weeks Apple Spring loaded event?

Brings back lost of nostalgic memories. The video is completely right about the first version of Mac OS being slow. After upgrading the Mac OS 9 on my black Powerbook G3 to Mac OS X, it became incredibly slow, to the point of being unusable! But I loved the new OS so much that instead of downgrading back to Mac OS 9, I went out and bought a new Titanium PowerBook G4. Was worth the enhanced user experience.

You don't know anything. G. you don't know anything. I will do everything. So in the 1990's the American Military invented the Internet and it soon became public. They owned the domains ".com", ".net" and ".org". They costed $8-13 Then there was a new organization that assigned every country a 2 letter code. The cost was made by the country. Now I have told you about domains. Yes they are called domains.
You have a Dynamic IP Address. Which changes and isn't reliable because it changes. It makes it possible to connect to the internet otherwise it would be one person at a time. You need a Static IP Address. If you type ""6.6.6.6" in you browser it will bring you to nothing. Search it in an engine and you would see that it's somewhere in America. Your IP Address will change and will bring you somewhere else.
Programming isn't hard It is an Advertisement. You will have to find a good place which is very easy. Don't spend half of your time in H.T.M.L. use that ii C.S.S. because you will need to learn all the properties. I hate Javascript. I am suspicious of React because Jens at Mojang said "Facebook creeps me out.". I don't know of PHP and it looks like an Email List. For Sql you have Microsoft Access.
There is a thing called a C.M.S. It is 40mb bloatware that slowly rises to 1gb. I am trying to make a Off Site C.M.S. but I would have to break all of security. Most W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G. editors don't have advanced features to make a real website. Dreamweaver is close but you still have to code.
I'm really good at this. I have written way more than this for average.

Worked for a regional Internet service provider in the early days of the public Internet. My fellow system administrator was a published author in FreeBSD.
Since the birth of WWW websites was created on a NeXT host system. When Steve Jobs came back to Apple, and in effect took NeXT OS updated it to run on Mac's. At the core of what we now know as macOS is a FreeBSD UNIX base. Apple has submitted OS X for certification (and received it,) every version since 10.5.
So with what is now macOS being FreeBSD UNIX based we purchased the education all white version of the G3 all in one for the office so we could support our customers who purchased Apple Mac's.
I myself who had the original 1984 Macintosh moved "Back to Mac" for personal use with the introduction of the Intel iMac. In fact until they stopped supporting 32 bit Linux for my old iMac I used it up until last year.
Now with the new M series Apple iMac's I will soon be moving from Intel to Apple M series chip set. Thing is it looks like it will have Linux support down the road.

The reason for the slow UI of early OS X is more related to the fact, that it uses "Display PDF" rendering technique, derived from "Display PostScript" of the NeXT Computer is based on (which was infamous for the incredible display quality while being a slow UI ;)
So basically anything on the screen is a PDF document. With Quarz Core I think in 10.4 Apple build a much quicker rendering engine and the UI became much faster (If I understand that correctly, it uses calculation power of the graphics chips). This is the reason why even today the display quality of macOS is still higher than most other computer Systems.

I’ve been using Mac OS since system 7.0 in 1993 all the way to currently using macOS Big Sur. I never forget the kernel panics in OS X 10.0. My favorite was system 8.5/8.6. Oh by the way I do like macOS Big Sur. It does have a mixture of iPadOS and macOS in one.
Actually the Lisa was Apple’s first GUI based computer. It didn’t sell well, but it was still the first. The Xerox Star was released 3 years before Macintosh. Xerox got their product to market before Apple. I would like to see a video that discusses the orgins of Mac OS X. It all started with NeXT. OS X was a revamp of NeXTSTEP. Today all of Apple’s operating systems have their roots in the work done at NeXT. Most Apple users have no idea that manh of the technologies running their devices were created over 30 years ago.
